- Have you been following Anna, my daughter in law, as she learns to make a quilt? Well, this is the final video in that series! We both put bindings on our quilts and have two quilts that we are really pleased with! You can see the whole journey here - • Teaching my daughter i...
Anna's fabric was kindly donated by Spoonflower from a designer called Michelle Parascadalo. My quilt is made up of what I call my Terry Blocks as I was inspired by Terry Rowland - her UA-cam Channel is called just that - Terry Rowland.
I chose to face my quilt rather than bind it like I showed Anna. I first saw this type of binding on Joe Cunningham's amazing quilts last year at The Festival of Quilts and you can watch his tutorial for facing here

Anna and I are overwhelmed by all the wonderful comments! Thank you so much for all your thoughtful friendliness, I am very lucky to have such a caring, talented daughter in law. We will be thinking about her next project soon! Love to you and take care, Kate xxx
You're so blessed to have a loving daughter-in-law. I have all grown girls and 3 sons-in-law. They are not into sewing. LOLOLO My daughters, somewhat.
So happy to hear that Anna is now a quilter!! Both of the quilts are so pretty. It is so good to hear you both giggle. Can't wait to see what Anna comes up with for her next quilt.😊
❤️
My daughters and I really enjoy getting together to embroider. We call it Stich and Bich lol
Wonderful!
I wonder if Anna knows how beautiful she is; both physically and soulfully. What a treat to have her for a "bonus" daughter!
Hear hear. Watching her makes me happy. 😊
I respectfully agree with you.
I think of this every time I watch Anna, she is such a delightful person.
Watching them interact is the best part of the videos!
She is so pretty and not in your face with it. Her head is a rather normal size 😂😂😂 we love you Anna❤❤❤
"Encouraging" Kate and "Let's Make More!" Anna. The perfect quilting duo. What a fun video.
About a cupboard full of lovely quilts makes me think of a gift I received on my 70th Birthday.
Blessed are the QuilterFor they are the piecemakers
Blessed are the Children of the Quilters
For they will inherit the Quilts.
When Anna says “let’s make more”, just a perfect example of why I love these videos ❤️.
Me too
I agree !
Anna is darling! She did a wonderful job!
Oh Kate. This was such a joy to watch. Not only do you have a fabulous son, but a dear dear daughter in law. Anna, you are a love. Thanks Ladies. And the quilts are stunning.
Hugs from Maine.
🇦🇺💜🇺🇲💚🪡🧵👍
my thoughts exactly!❤
I wish y’all were my neighbor
This is absolutely my favorite you tube channel. And the Kate/anna dynamic is what really brings it together. There is something about watching a genuine relationship but also watching someone lovingly teach.
Thanks for the video, makes me wish I wasn't homeless and had a place to set-up my sewing machine and make my fist quilt, watching Kate makes me so happy you are fabulous.
I love when my husband spits out a quilting term..... I am so proud of his attention to quilts. Long time back, I had 4 friends for a weekend retreat at my house....he kept tabs on everyone's projects. MONTHS later at our quilt show, he went around and found every single ( now finished ) quilt that had the beginnings at our retreat. He then found each friend to compliment them. I will literally be smiling on my deathbed at that precious memory. He ALSO liked the treats and meals that come along with a retreat!!!!
Lovely quilts, Anna and Kate.
That's beautiful!
What a wonderful husband!
So nice!
Lovely 🥰
What a fabulous finale to the quilt making. Well done Anna - you have done amazingly well. Having Kate as a teacher is truly wonderful.
Какую красата вы создаёте ❤❤❤Привет с России
Congratulations Anna! There's no turning back now. There is no antidote for this addiction.
My husband gets to semi-voluntarily pick up crafting terms too. He helps me baste my quilts and has helped me warp my rigid heddle loom and is a great yarn untangler. He tells me things like “I was next to a lady knitting on the ferry today - she was knitting Continental too” and whatnot. I’ve told him I’m doing him a favor - if he outlives me, he will be immensely popular in the nursing home.
I intend to make seasonal quilts to go with my seasonal crocheted blankets I’ve made. Go for it, Anna!
What a delightful daughter-in-law!! Why can’t all mothers-in-law be like you??? Thank you, love your videos! Greetings from a sunny South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
And all daughter in laws be like Anna, it takes two people wanting a healthy relationship….I really do not like being a mother in law, such negative thoughts about it, i like my daughter in law, respect her, happy my son is happy….but she doesn’t like my daughter, therefore I have to keep my distance, i just try to smile and be pleasant, i keep to myself.
Ironically her mother is so sweet, i like her, she likes me, but i see how she treats her mother too, a bit of a bratty young woman.
Lovely to watch Kate and Anna.
I ended up with a good relationship with my MIL but I had to work at it and when it did work it was only because I catered to her and fulfilled her narcissism needs. She was no Kate.
@@peglamphier4745how is that a good relationship?
“The quilt police know where Kate lives”🤣😂😹. I like that Anna has gone down the English paper piecing rabbit 🐇 holes with Liberty Tana Lawn for her summer quilt.😻🥰
You have a beautiful daughter in-law who has passion for quilting, you are a great teacher, God bless you both and your precious family
I love the way the two of you enjoy being together, working on your quilts and most of all you laughing together.
Congratulations Anna! 🎉you are both so blessed to have one another. I love watching you together, makes me smile so much. I have a happy heart watching you! ❤❤
Kate, you're such an inspiration! Most of the sewing I do is clothing for all the dolls made by American Girl. Now I'm making quilts for them. What fun!
Anna don't forget you can make a couple of pillow case/cushion covers with your scraps or left over binding.
You two make me smile. Having a wonderful mother-in-law and/ or daughter-in-law is a true gift. Such fun to watch you two kindred souls.
I think it would be nice to have all the women for a family weekend craft time? Everyone can do their thing around the table.
I so enjoy seeing the genuine friendship and affection between Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law. Good camaraderie! Thank you!
Hi Kate and Ann a, it's been such a beautiful journey to watch as you've worked together on your quilts. Mother and daughter, teacher and student and kindred spirits. Both quilts are gorgeous. I shall be looking forward to seeing more of your quilting journey Anna. Happy stitching xx
What a beautiful ending to two projects made together by two beautiful people. Quilting truly brings us together whether in person or via a video. We are so blessed! Thank you both for a beautiful series. I am already looking ahead to your next adventure together. What a rare and beautiful relationship the two of you have, it doesn’t always develop like this but it is lovely to see. Thanks so much for sharing. Happy quilting 🥰
Two very different quilts but both so gorgeous. Such a lovely relationship you two share and it’s a privilege to watch you interact with one another in a loving, caring way. 💖
My son’s getting married and his fiancé said they didn’t want a “wedding quilt “, it’s her second marriage. Fair enough so they are getting a “ picnic quilt”,(no batting) as they RV in good weather!😄❤️.
You two warm my heart! Thank you for sharing your warm, sincere, authentic relationship with us on the lime green sofa! The quilts are beautiful! And as a quilter for more than 30 years, I’m still learning new things, as I’ve never seen a faced quilt! I’ll have to try it!
You’ve said exactly what I want to say. They are a joy to watch ❤️
Rught? I've never seen that either. Sew interesting!
ive just recently joined all of your lovely subscribers on the lime green sofa! what a great group of people are gathered there.
im so happy to have discovered your channel! I am from the US on the north coast of Ohio (on Lake Erie). every day I spend too much time watching all of your videos from the past 5 years.
I, too, am a maker of many things.....book binding, quilting, gardening, and I have a cat (though only one). I admire the way you interact with all of your family and I have grown quite fond of each of them.
Thank you for your gentle and kind manner.....keep making videos! you give such enjoyment to so many!
Kate and Anna, I love this episode. The quilts are beautiful. I absolutely feel so happy and empowered when watching your videos. Thank you so much.
Anna, your quilt with the tiny, tiny hexagons should go on the wall....framed and under glass. Anyone making hexagons that small deserves having the quilt live on in perpetuity.
What a lovely video. So special for Kate to pass down her knowledge of ❤quilting to her daughter in law Anna. Congratulations Anna on your quilt!
It's great to see a younger person eager to learn, but it's also nice to see an older person who is patient and a good teacher. I'm happy both of you are here.
Kate you are such a great teacher, so patient and kind, and your daughter in law learning from you. She will always remember who taught her and pass it on to others.
Such an absolutely lovely video!! I got a little teary at the end watching Kate’s joy over her beloved Anna and her gorgeous quilt…she’s so pleased and proud. You two are so endearing. Family is such a blessing.
I just love watching the two of you stitching together!! It made me so happy to hear Anna, with absolutely no hesitation, say “yes”, she’s going to make another!! Bless little Cat Rita for her sweet contribution to the music of this video-“meow”😻
Oh Kate, it was so much fun watching you two interact with each other. There's a genuine fondness that shines through. All the while casually chatting away, it was so relaxing to watch, and the end result, two amazingly beautiful quilts.
Enjoyed you & Anna binding, well all your videos together Ann a is so sweet & funny.
Never having had a daughter, seeing you and Anna together brings me joy❤
My mum and I did a lot of quilting together before she passed away; we had so much fun! I love watching Kate and Anna....brings back lovely memories. 😊
You might have to adopt a good friend to quilt with.
@@hopeforested Actually, I do have a few friends to quilt with and we have a wonderful time, but it's not quite the same. 🥰
@@ruthgoebel723 I get it, and I'm glad you have quilting friends. 💘
Oh my goodness! I dropped everything when this popped up. Both quilts look so beautiful. The series has been a real joy. We'll done Anna!
That was just so wonderful. What a joy to watch the two of you together. Anna is so beautiful and kind just a joy to watch. And to have Kate as a teacher! We could all be so fortunate!! Looking forward to your next adventure ♥️
The video with John was hilarious - he is so mischievous and you’re endlessly patient but you occasionally laughed and that cracked me up 😂 He teases you mercilessly, my adult sons tease me too and I’m very glad they do 😂
I am so happy the two you finally got those beautiful quilts finished... Well done to both of you.
I have gone back and watched all of your episodes! I am watching now and really love yours and Anna's ideas. Many years ago I sewed everything but life got very busy and haven't sewn in about 38years! You have reignited the spark which renews my sewing fuse! I will be starting my first quilt this next week. I have been busy setting up my sewing room! By the way, I am 75years old. Thank you for your channel. You are lovely!❤😊
The same with me! I’ve watched so many in the last few weeks Geraldo jokingly said he thinks I’m stalking her! I am just finishing up the quilt I started after I found Kate’s videos. It’s for my GP who convinced to get checked for breast cancer. I did and they found it before it’s bad. Aren’t we lucky to have found someone so encouraging and kind! I hope Kate knows how great she is.
I definitely need a Kate in my life!! Aren’t you interested in organizing a summer camp?? I will pay the fortune I don’t have 😂 to stay a month in the cabin just quilting, drinking tee (maybe wine as well) talking no stop and staring at the beautiful view 😊 Thank you for sharing!!
Congratulations on crossing a double finish line together, and your first finish, Anna! Both quilts are beautiful! I've loved being in on your conversations all along the way and seeing Anna get the bug. Such lovely, no waste choices for scraps in the backing and binding. There is always a bright, happy idea at the Last Homely House and it is so much fun to tune in. Thank you so much.
Hello Kate and Anna, I am Linda, an old Granny from "across the pond" in the middle of the USA. I just recently found your channel. I did make fabric crafts and paper crafts, but due to health issues I have had to pause for a while. I never quilted but love the look and the process. So enjoy watching you and hearing your lovely voices. I am fascinated with languages and dialects, we even have many different dialects between the States. I also love to see the relationship between the two of you. So precious! . Seeing the admiration, laughter and love between you. Seeing the patience and understanding. The excitement over the process. Beautiful. So I shall gab a tea (Earl Grey is my favorite) and stick around. I have to see them finished of course. God bless you both.
Hi from Iowa :)
@@karinjudge7277 Hello, Oklahoma here.
Anna your quilt is so springy great job Loved this series of your first quilt and Kate teaching you. Thank you for sharing your journey Hugs
I think this is my favourite quilt of yours, Kate. I love it!! ❤ ❤❤❤❤
What a wonderful experience together. Thank you both for sharing these very special times together. Anna, what an amazing achievement! Stunning!
You never need a reason to sew a quilt, the fun is in the making. Loved watching Anna making her quilt and Kate you are a wonderful teacher.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while! Love the way you’re interacting with each other! I smiled through the whole video! Cheers to you Anna for joining all of us who were not quilters, but because of Kate and her amazing ability to teach, are now officially quilters…always planning the next one! ❤
Both of these are marvelous quilts.I love sitting, and stitching with you both.
Oh my goodness, that hexagon quilt project is GORGEOUS, Anna! Good luck!
I am making my own hexagon quilt, a grandmother’s flower garden. I am loving all the handwork!
Totally agree Sarah, that hexie is going to be FABULOUSLY DELISIOUS. The colors, OH MY! YUMMY
Yeah Anna! You've been bitten by the quilt bug now! It's addicting. You two get on so well. It's so fun to watch you enjoying each other's company.😊
Lovely to watch you two this morning. Love the quilts!!❤❤
Really enjoyed this quilting series with Anna, and looking forward to more videos of the two of you quilting together.
You don’t have to justify making a quilt, just make them! My new motto!! Thanks
could be on a mug or t-shirt!
Oh Kate & Anna you both so made my day watching you both quilt so wonderfully together. I can’t wait to share this fabulous video with my daughter. You both are so lucky that you have each other. I lost my Mom. But my daughter & I are very close. I am trying to convince my daughter to quilt with me. Hopefully when I show my daughter this video she will get inspired to quilt along side me. The quilts look amazing!
💃🏻💕🕯️🙏🏻 🧵🧶
I wish I was there with you two happily quilting away, you’re both wonderful!
What a lovely video!!!! Made my day. Sewing and quilting has been a calming effect on my life for many years. Much love to you both. I don’t envy a full home renovation!!!!
Haven't ever heard of facing a quilt. Very nice finish. Learned something new today. Love seeing you and Anna stitch together.
What I've enjoyed the most is watching your relationship develop through this lovely shared experience. Amen.
both quilts are so beautiful and you have such a lovely relationship with your daughter in laws.😍
I loved, loved, loved this episode!! It's such a great combination of you and Anna learning, being productive and having great fun! I may watch it again.
I love bith quilts. I usually blind stitch my quilts closed at the edge. I am not fond of bindings usually lol, but I recently did make one with an edging. I am completely self taught , so I probably am breaking allTheRules, but as long as it turns out the way I want it to look at thend, I don't mind terribly much. ❤
No RULES, those who want to judge, don't deserve to see your beautiful quilts.
@@charlotteholzhausen3879 lol. ❤️🥰 I agree.
I’m with Anna on wanting loads of quilts to choose, I’ve got 14 made so far, and my daughter says she loves the fact that she and guests can go and choose/swap their quilt, it makes the house have a lovely, unique, wholesome feel. I made my first quilt in my late forties, it took me over a year and a half to make, then got hooked and now make 5 or 6 quilts a year, what stops me making more is the expense of good quality quilting cotton fabrics ❤. Loads of my friends say “what do you do with all these quilts? “Some have even called them duvets! I guess homemade quilts are not for everyone but I love being surrounded by them, so carry on Anna, fill your home and your heart, with handmade quilts
This was such a great video. Your quilts turned out so pretty, and Anna should be very proud of herself for making such a beautiful first quilt. Thank you both for all you do to entertain all of us!!
Lovely job, Anna. I really like how those little scraps made a colourful binding. As well, Kate, the shark's tooth backing is so beautiful!! What a nice way to spend time together.
Congratulations to both of you, not only for finishing the quilts, but also for sharing your lovely relationship with all of us. You are showing that joy and love abound in your family and that's what this world needs to see. Thank you Kate, for opening your life to us. Thank you Anna, for cheerfully learning and giggling...That's what life is about. Hugs to you both from the Rockies in Canada.
I make the backing a couple of inches bigger all around than my quilit top. I fold the raw edge under and and bring it around to the top and mitre the corners. So it looks a bit like binding.. Sometimes, if I want the quilt a bit bigger, I add a couple of inches extra all around. So it makes a bit of a border. I have also done it the other way and made the quilt top a bit bigger and folded it back so it looks like it doesn't have any binding. I stitch it all around by hand. I just find it easier than trying to bind my quilts as I don't have a walking foot so always end up with puckers using the machine.
I like it when I see quilts finished this way, too! I think I know of 5 different ways to finish a quilt--none of them more "correct" than another!
This video is the Best! You two very Dear People!
The joy and camaraderie you two share is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
Must confess that i will be rewatching this one too.
Thankyou so MUCH!!!
Cant wait to 'face' my next quilt!
Thanks for teaching me something new!
Yes! Both of your quilts are Lovely!
Can confirm....all my quilts have five corners as well! 😂😂😂
It’s so good to see Anna’s enthusiasm for quilting 😀
Both quilts are gorgeous!! Congratulations Anna on completing your first quilt. Your teacher is fabulous!! Looking forward to your next quilt!! ♥️
Love the colors in Anna’s quilt and her scrappy binding. Both of you put of this beautiful relaxing joyful energy or vibe and seem so genuine.
It is such a joy to sit here on the lime green sofa and crochet while watching you and Anna finish your quilts. She is so lucky to have you to show her everything about quilting and to make her very own with your help and advice along the way. What great memories you are both making together. It makes me miss sitting beside my Grandmother when I was a young girl and watching her sew and make quilts and brings back all the special memories.
Wonderful to watch you two working side by side, enjoying life and creating beauty. Thank you. Inspirational.
I'm so very proud of you Anna and your beautiful quilt. I love your laugh and your determination to make quilts for all four seasons. Bless you both.
Bravo Anna!! Welcome to the most wonderful hobby/crafting community! As a quilter, you will always have friends around the world. Beautiful quilt! You have a wonderful teacher.
I have truly loved watching the videos of Anna's quilting journey with her wonderful mother-in-love! I am teaching my 3 granddaughters, all 8 years old, to embroider and quilt. Recently, they have been able to reach the pedal on my sewing machine and can sew solo. I will also teach the two grandsons, now 5 years old, once they get older. My great-grandparents came from Sweden to Washington, D.C., U.S.A., and worked as tailors to 2 U.S. Presidents. They made inaugural suits for Coolidge and Taft. Sewing skipped several generations before reaching me, but I have at least got the grandgirls sewing in our family. Can't wait to see the next series of quilt-making with Kate and Anna!
Amazing! I was rewatching this playlist today whilst binding a quilt and was thinking to myself, “I’m sure I didn’t see the binding video!” What a fun coincidence 😂
Having come inside from yard work, I started watching this and thought it a good time to stitch the binding on one of my quilts. We’re virtually stitching on the lime green sofa! 😁
And I’m hand stitching binding down too just now. Glad to be with you all!
Beautiful work. Beautiful family. Thank you for sharing. ❤
I’m working on finishing a quilt that’s been in the works for a very long time. Not quite to the binding stage, but I’m completing the appliqué piece so I can sew the borders on and finish it. Sitting on the lime green couch watching you finish your quilt while working on mine!
Well done Anna! Two down many more to come! I don’t quite know how many quilts I have started and not finished, watching this makes me think I’d better get to it!!! Love, love, live this channel! I’m in Oregon, USA.
Anna is going down the quilt rabbit hole. Anna is a fast learner.
To expand on what Kate said... If my wadding interval is 8-inches. I'll quilt a little closer... maybe 6-inches (depending on my design). Then I'll bind it because now it's safe to wash in the machine. If you wash before binding, your edge will get full of unraveled threads. The binding stops the raveling.
For me, piecing can take a long time and my fabric gets dusty and it been on the floor several times by the time I bind it, it needs a good wash.
Once washed, I'm in love with it all over again because it smells fresh and clean! And I'm excited to continue quilting on it.
This method allows me to revise my quilt design if needed. I've been known to plan a 2" grid only to find a 3" grid will work just as well.
My other tip for this quilt as you go method is do the 6" grid all over then do the 2" or 3" grid all over, instead of in quadrants or smaller sections.
By quilting in sections, you have sections that are noticably not completed. By quilting all over, you can stop at any time and your quilt is usable, washable and looks complete. 💖🌞🌵😷
Anna, here where I live (in the USA), there is a song titled "The Touch of The Master's Hand" by Wayne Watson. It is a song that has a faith filled meaning but, as I'm watching this video, the song kept popping up into the back of my mind. As you are sewing along on your quilt, Kate is guiding you, instructing and encouraging you! I couldn't help but make the parallel that truly, you are touched by the (quilting) master's hand! How blessed we all are, in life, by our teachers and those who take time out of their lives to pass on their skills and knowledge! Bless you, Kate! ❤
Love seeing your quilts in their final stage. Haven't heard of facing a quilt, but I agree that with that somewhat busy binding and very busy quilt, it's is best as a facing. Anna, your quilt is lovely! You are a fast learner! Good luck with the hexagons!
2 beautiful quilts! More importantly, I adore the relationship you two have. I
Have a DIL that is sweet, but she and I don’t have as close a relationship as you and Anna. You both are extremely blessed to have each other! And you both get to share John! 💕💕
I reallly don't know why you don't have more subscribers! I do so enjoy the time I'm on the lime green sofa. I never heard of a faced quilt and it will work very well with the quilts I am making for my congregation's children.
You are an amazing teacher. I'm teaching my grand daughter how to quilt and I pray that I can teach her just like you. Thank you very much.
When I made quilted alter cloths I used facings most of the time for a clean finish.
Will you please share what an after cloth is? I haven't heard of it.
I watch every one else bind or face their quilts. I have a lot of UFOs and never get at it. I must try to do some in 2024. Loved this video.
Creative women teaching and learning from their shared passion and passing the knowledge foward ❤ Sweet!
So pleased Anna has got the quilting bug!
Anna, your quilt is lovely!! Perhaps even more enjoyable for me than seeing the process is to watch the relationship between you Kate. How lucky you are to have such a wonderful mother-in-law. You are both so warm and funny in these videos. It does our hearts good to watch. Thank you for sharing these special moments with all of us.
Now I want to make a quilt!! 😂
Delightful video! Beautiful quilts! What a fun relationship you and Anna have ! An absolute blessing for each of you ! Quilt on !! ❤️
Such a joy to watch the process if the making of Anna's quilt. You were such a good teacher, Kate. I love your current quilt too. ❤
What a beautiful video, it shows both of your lovely personalities and the wonderful relationship you have. How luck John is to have found his Anna. Thank you for a joyful morning watching you quilting together.
The two of you are so lovely to watch. I lost my mom to cancer in 2006. She was a quilter too. I had to learn how to quilt on my own. I found your channel through Arne & Carlos. Knitting is my passion.
Hahaha! I love the idea of a QR code!! Thank you so much for doing this series. I haven’t quilted in over a year but now have the “quilting bug” once again! Thank you! Both of your quilts are beautiful!!
I think I need a whole week to read the comments section and relish in the joy it brings. Thank you both for your beautiful spirits. Now to the next journey. Kate I totally agree that facing your quilt was the best way forward. I have been aware of this method for some years. Tthe facing can become a 'feature' in itself rather than just another way of finishing a quilt. Nancy Roelfsena's UA-cam (OnPoint-TV and Quilting with Nancy) channel has two episodes on how she does I highly recommend it. The first one was six years ago in 2018 titled Finishing a Quilt with Facing and the most recent one three years ago titled Facing a Quilt. The facing does not have to be just 2.5 inches it can be any size you want thus adding a totally different element and feature to the backing. It is worth watching and learning how you can improvise it to your own style. May God bless you both and your families and of course the furry ones too.
Wonderful video! Not only have we been able to watch Anna grow as a quilter but we have also been able to see more of her personality come out in these videos. The two of you have an awesome rapport!
Once you start, you can’t stop! Your so cute together 😊
