Had to pull over for a pit stop at a tire center, while waiting, struck up a conversation with a man, a little stand-offish initially! His accent soon gave him away! Native to England he followed a woman to America and, though that didn't work out, he's stuck here! So, I introced him to your page here on UA-cam, told him the name of your channel--and, he loosened up right away, "Yeah, in America people think the word homely means gangly or ugly, in England it means something entirely different..." And, as he stammered, I inserted, "Cozy?" "Yeah, 'cozy he said! Yeah!" So, I told him, "If you want a taste of home, just look up 'The Last Homely House/UA-cam and you'll feel right at home!
Of course I told him about your subject matter--and, that you've started a new channel for gardening--told him you have a beautiful "spread", an American word for land/homely house!
John's antics crack me up. I saw something in a magazine that I think he would really like- Find an inexpensive basket with gaps in the weave. Make a little roof for it and run some twine thru both to hang it from a tree. Put thin strips or selvages in it and pull some ends thru the gaps. In the early Spring, birds will pull them out to make their nests with. How pretty that would be!
When I started my first major quilt project, it was a sampler quilt block of the month project. I think I cried three times during the construction of the initial block because of the flying geese. I wasn't the most accurate, didn't know how to square up my blocks and the pieces of material frayed and got smaller and smaller as I ripped them apart with each set of errors. A friend finally rescued me, showed me what to do, as did the lovely folks at the quilt shop where I had to got to get more material for that first block. By the end of the project I was a master of the flying geese. The whole quilt is bordered with them and I got a lot of practice. I even lost a strip of seventy or so and had to remake them! I probably should dislike them after that initial project but I don't! I enjoy making them now and have made them four at a time when I can!🙂
Also wanted to say as a new viewer of your lovely channel...I just Love the relationship you have with family. Especially Anna. My mother n' law was my best friend, my spiritual mother and we had quite a unique Mother/Daughter extraordinary relationship. Thanks for all your warm hugs over the e-Waves. Thank you dear friend. Also my grandmother that taught me sewing and quilting at a very early age as she had 5 boys, her name was Anna.
The Flying Goose block is an all time favorite. I have found more than 30 other blocks that use the Flying Goose block as a component of a more complicated block. Thank you for your lovely videos.❤
Hello Kate, after watching this video I am courageous enough to start with a flying geese quilt. I have collected a box full of Kaffe Fassett fabrics and now a plan is growing in my brain to mix them with solids. I think John's layout could be called Every Which Way!! Too funny the way he tossed the last two. I love making geese, and every so often I make a pile of them for the 'parts department' and save them for some day when I have enough for a quilt.

One of the few quilts I have kept for myself is a flying goose quilt, inspired by a previous video you did Kate, using scraps. The geese were made up of fabric I made from crumbs and just used a charcoal grey as the sky, and laid out in a rainbow sweep. I love the quilt because everytime I look at it I see fabrics that bring back memories. Thanks Kate
Four flying geese at a time is my favorite method. I made a flying geese quilt for my son. The geese went in one direction (north) with strips of solid fabric inbetween the rows. I like your idea of keeping all four geese together, after all birds of a feather flock together! John looks like he is a big help!

I only sewed one variation of a Flying Geese in the 45 years I quilt. I made it for my dying brother and called it Honeward Bound….He since passed away and his wife and son too… the quilt now belongs to my SIL daughter from a previous relation.
I have found your videos very therapeutic in an otherwise emotional year …. Just listening while I sew and hearing about life at the Last Homely House is comforting because nothing is rushed, there is no sign of the outside world most of the time and your contentment in being creative and enjoying your outdoor spaces makes me realise that I can do the same too. Tell John he inspired me to lay out my flying geese all wonky as he did in this video. Like Kate, I love bright fabrics & even used all greens as my sky as you did. For the geese lavenders & reds all Kaffe. I added a 4” solid red border & backed w/a small purple Kaffe backing & bound with the same. A fun, bright 68” square quilt that will always remind me of John sneaking in & shaking up your blocks. 😂
How exciting! The creator of Block loc rulers was in my quilt group, that is until her business took off and her time got precious! So exciting to know her product made it “across the pond”.
I must admit I do like John’s layout. He’s not overthinking it like the rest of us do. It’s a bit like watching kids playing with colours and patterns, they just do what they like! The evil chuckle sounds like Gizmo the African grey parrot!

It's really interesting how many different "feels" the same block can make: contemporary, scrappy, old time, whatever - just by how you line them up! What fun. But going back to color choices changes it up as well: how different green goose on pink would be & how lots of prints change the look from solids. That design board earns its place always. John's silliness really made me realize how the art combines with craft!
I love your house, especially all the windows letting so much sunlight into your rooms. I have taken a few photos from several of your videos because all those sunny windows with their colorful curtains, and the quilts-in-progress, WIPs, on your walls and the finished quilts on the beds make a very cheerful sewing space and an overall delightful house! I just like to save those lovely, happy photos to look at often for a “shot” of endorphins flooding my brain. Each of your rooms is a work of art in itself!🥰 I did enjoy John’s fun at the end, to “save you time,” and him tossing the two “extra” blocks which “she’s not going to need anyway.”😂😂😂
Just received my LHH Quilt Planning Notebook in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Ohhh Kate, you, Anna and Rita did a spectacular job with the scrapbook!! I love it!! The paper you printed it on is THICK and fabulous! It's well designed, with PLENTY of space for me to plan and document. I've already started my 4 At-A-Time Flying Geese quilt and I didn't even have to draw the design, you did it for me 🙂 This scrapbook is going to be so FULL with fabric sample geese, photos and fabric labels, that I'm going to need a bungie cord to keep it closed. Thank you soooo very much. Only disappointment: Where are the cats or at the very least you could have snuck in a photo of your goose!

I made a flying geese quilt after watching your earlier videos. I did the Dutchman' Puzzle arranglement. I used up a lot of scraps. The long arm person used a meandering all over design and I love it. So many memories with all those fabrics.
I love your videos. You inspired me to make an English paper piercing quilting. It’s my first one. Because I live in a tropical weather we don’t use quilting. But my kids and granddaughter live in Columbus OHIO, that has a very cold winters… I decided to make one quilting for the sofa. It has nearly 1000 plus hexagon 😮! It’s quite a big job. Tons of hand stitching. It’s a very calming job. Thanks Kate for your inspiring videos. Wonder music!
Kate, you really need a Sue Daly pink rotating mat to help you trim all those geese. Comes in two sizes and they are pink! You will love it. Brave lady to make all those geese! They are always a great challenge for me.
I love John's layout of the quilt! That reminds me of when I would crochet scrappy afghans and I would tell my children to just grab whatever colour they wanted to add next. They are much better at being random than I am.

A silly goose playing with the flying goose layout. In one section they're going to collide. I'm in Canada and our Geese all go in the same direction. One direction in the morning to feed and the other direction at night to meet up and roost. Quite pretty though, John. I really like it. I ordered your Quilt Planner. I've yet to see something with as much room in it. The one I have, there's barely any place to write anything besides the name of the quilt and the size. I think I'm really going to enjoy it.
Here I sit on a Saturday morning (2024) and I am enjoying this immensely. When John comes in and just does his thing 😂. Kate I like the flying goose block but I have been intimidated by it but I thinks shall give it a try
Haha, cheeky!! I take colour photos of all of the layouts that I try. It's amazing to see how different a quilt can look through a lens vs the naked eye. I sometimes change my mind after looking through the pictures.

I made a flying geese quilt after watching your earlier videos. I did the Dutchman' Puzzle arranglement. I used up a lot of scraps. The long arm person used a meandering all over design and I love it. So many memories with all those fabrics.
I love how you are keeping the same coloured geese in the blocks. It's as if each little family stays togerther.
I love your videos. You inspired me to make an English paper piercing quilting. It’s my first one. Because I live in a tropical weather we don’t use quilting. But my kids and granddaughter live in Columbus OHIO, that has a very cold winters… I decided to make one quilting for the sofa. It has nearly 1000 plus hexagon 😮! It’s quite a big job. Tons of hand stitching. It’s a very calming job. Thanks Kate for your inspiring videos. Wonder music!
I like using the no waste flying goose block method. Haha, I actually like John's block arrangement. He's a rascal.
Kate, you really need a Sue Daly pink rotating mat to help you trim all those geese. Comes in two sizes and they are pink! You will love it. Brave lady to make all those geese! They are always a great challenge for me.

I love John's layout of the quilt! That reminds me of when I would crochet scrappy afghans and I would tell my children to just grab whatever colour they wanted to add next. They are much better at being random than I am.

A silly goose playing with the flying goose layout. In one section they're going to collide. I'm in Canada and our Geese all go in the same direction. One direction in the morning to feed and the other direction at night to meet up and roost. Quite pretty though, John. I really like it.
I ordered your Quilt Planner. I've yet to see something with as much room in it. The one I have, there's barely any place to write anything besides the name of the quilt and the size. I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

Haha, cheeky!! I take colour photos of all of the layouts that I try. It's amazing to see how different a quilt can look through a lens vs the naked eye. I sometimes change my mind after looking through the pictures.

Sending lots of positive vibes back to you and your family. * I will be making a flying geese quilt this year for the first time, and my eyes make me want that special flying geese ruler! LOL. My brain also adores lime green (that color really does fire up my creativity and focus) and look right there - a lime green cutting board. Wow!! I didn't even know they made that.
