Tips to Learning to Ride an EUC Backwards
Вставка

- This was day 15 of riding an EUC. The previous day riding I was able to ride backward a little bit and I felt as though I was on the verge of getting it. So this day I spent about an hour just learning to ride backwards in a pretty much straight line. The value of safety gear is evident at the end of the video in my B Roll wipeouts.

Im trying. Thanks for the motivation Mert ! 👍
Thanks for the comment. Keep at it! What wheel do you have? I’m still struggling with riding backwards on my Begode Master. Just got the T4 Pro and waiting for my Grizzla setup to arrive. Then I hope to be able to ride it backwards fairly quickly.
Thank you for these records of your learning process. They are honest, helpful, encouraging.
Although I am much older than you, I would like to acquire these skills too.
Currently researching availability and price of liability insurance.
Thanks for your comments Harold. I wish you all the best in your EUC journey. It has been rewarding for me to learn this new skill later in life. It is a welcome addition to my camping, astronomy and photography hobbies that I enjoy. I hope to hear soon that you are out there enjoying your EUC. Best, Mert
You are doing real good for 15 days. I am on 15th month now and still haven't learned backwards riding, but in all fairness, I forget to practice it 😀
That’s funny Jonah. I keep coming back from a ride or practice session and think, “Man, I forgot to practice something or other”
The backward riding has progressed a lot. Impressive! Keep doing what you're doing. 👍
Thanks G Lash! I am now able to do circles and figure 8’s backwards, but I still have to put a foot down quite a lot. Also, still haven’t mastered riding backwards on the Master, only the KS 14M.
Your bike helmet is good for practice, but if you ride with the master, I recommend a full-face helmet for safety at high speeds. Also when you fall when you have your back against the ground do not get up using your back, turn sideways until your body faces the ground and from there help yourself up using your arms and then one leg at 90º and followed by the other, that way you will not hurt your back or have pain.
Thanks for the comments Blai! Yes, I am always wearning my motorcycle helmets when I ride the Master now. Thanks also for the tips on recovering!
Thanks Dad!
👍
Man you have had some rough falls it's good your padded up I think I would would have to use a motorcycle suit ifff I try it?
Good job! Riding backward is much harder than it looks. And yes, the unicycle does bite back on occasion. My shins will attest to that.
Thanks arevee! Enjoying the journey. Did a combination practice session and fun ride this morning. Every ride seems to make me more comfortable. Today for the first time I was able to go from seated to standing and vice versa while riding. Most attempts were awful, but some were good.
Atgatt! Safety is sexy!
I don’t ride backwards much, it is a nice trick, but I don’t think it really translates to confidence on the wheel like practicing other skills like going really slow (and maybe fast), getting low, always carving, emergency stops, etc?
Thanks for the comment Garrett. Yes, I am learning backward mostly for fun. I do need to improve at carving and emergency stops (and pretty much everything). Trying to ride at least a little bit everyday I am home. I travel a lot for work so I unfortunately sometimes am gone for 6 or 8 days without being able to ride.
It is tough to go that long without, when just starting especially. Not from a jones perspective but from a skills-maintaining one.
I still don't have backwards riding down, but there's a couple of situations where I wish I did. In group rides I often have to shuffle back to make space for other people when it gets bunched up. I also started playing around at skate parks, and going backwards confidently would help to scope out a feature before committing to it. Everything you mention is essential for new riders to get around safely though.
I really don’t see the point in doing it if you can’t turn your head in the backwards direction of travel though. I remember it being like really hard to do. I do often also practice turning my shoulders like parallel to my travel a lot, like one arm forward, one arm back. So someday it should be easy to twist and look backwards when I am riding that way. And I have completely ditched the helmet mirror (though I did buy one of those bike radar things, which I am still deciding on how to install it on my Sherman S.)
@@djwhiteflour Today I was able to comfortably turn my head and shoulders while maintaining control riding backwards. I have a mirror strapped to the back of my left hand and I can use it, but now I can also turn my head when I want. Unfortunately I am heading to work tomorrow morning and will be unable to ride for the next week.
If you are stopped and want to go backwards, give a little kick off and then step on.
It is easier for me to go backwards from a stopped position. My wheel is a lot heavier than the Kingsong wheel you have. When I go forward and then back, the wheel leans and it is too heavy to keep up for backwards, though I can go backwards like that, but not as consistent
Thanks for the comments. I’ll try your technique on my Begode Master. So far I haven’t been able to start riding backwards on it yet. Looking forward to a break in my work schedule in mid-January where I’ll be able to ride a few days. I will try then.
dam i cant going backwards lmao
It was tough at first. After a few days of many failed attempts I have gotten pretty comfortable going backwards.
why backwards when its one wheel you can turn so quickly .
Thanks for the comment Chris. I enjoy the challenges of continually learning new skills and information. Learning to ride backwards was no exception. I also find riding backwards to be fun.
Silly question. Why not try to improve your overall skill level in all aspects? Maybe just stick to a bicycle then. 🤪
