I bought a Manual Coyote Mustang 5.0 with the MT-82 Manual transmission at my local auction. It was in the AS-IS sale lot and sold really cheap; I found out why on the way home.

You are the one that put me on to Honey. It has saved me a lot of money and not only that, I got some cash back a couple of months ago. It cost NOTHING to plug it in your browser. It has found a lot of coupons for me. That Mustang looks like it has had a tough life.
Dont do it people if you like privacy. Will they delete this comment? Probably...no one but scotty tells the truth anymore.
It costs nothing except like…all your privacy.
@@ILOVEBACONBOY2018 Scotty is a hack. Well, kinda like an old SamCrac. 😂
& now it's logging everything you do and sending it off to god knows who so they can profit from using your data for god knows what.

The fact that it is 5th and 6th makes me think it is a simple mechanical failure like a shift fork that has sheared off on one side. I would take it apart and see what you find inside. You may be able to fix it for around $100. I do all my own manual transmission repairs and while they can be a chore, they are usually easy to troubleshoot.
Sam, this is NOT true! Don’t listen to this dummy !
@@devinb5937 as i look at more comments they all agree with the guy is saying so it seems you are the dummy.
@@devinb5937 It's very true!
I noticed you offered up a solution. . .
In a manual transmission, the gears are shifted in pairs. There is a hub and a slider that shifts between two gears and locks and unlocks it to a shaft, depending on where it is slid. When not in use, the slider is in the middle of the hub so that the gears float freely. It is the slider that grinds against the dogs on the actual gears, causing the noise. If done too much, it will grind down the points on the dogs to flat spots and make it hard to get into gear. If this happens, the components with damaged dogs willl require reworking (as I did on my 400000 mile Nissan Frontier) or replacement. It is unlikely that this is the issue with this trans though as it is on the overdrive gears that are not normally shifted aggressively. Thus I think it is the fork that is providing uneven force.
BTW Sam, I like in the Tampa Bay area and would be willing to take a look at it for you, if you want.
Sam, try to find out if Honey can get you a discount on a lift.
Or Quick Jacks
And a brain.
😂😂😂😂😂
The guy considers 7500 with body damage and no 5th gear a good deal.
But wont budget for the lift
Just have your step mom buy you one
I still find it hilarious how Sam just parks his cars randomly on his property.
And also how his garage is in his horse barn
Looks like they are grazing in the meadow…
Sam we’re gonna need 2 vids per week my man
I agree
Yea facts. Shit is motivation to work on my cars
His upload gaps are nothing compared to chrisfix's
I agree
I would definitely consider bringing it to a local reputable rebuilder, should be way less expensive then getting another one or a drop in upgrade and because it shifts fine for the first 4 gears + 6th they might only have to replace the 5th synchro and freshen it up a little and you're good to go, and the prices aren't usually too bad either especially on a popular car/trans like this
Buying used means you have 100-120K on it, most likely, and at some point, the internal parts need to be gone over and replaced, since it's not designed to go 300K miles.
Get it rebuilt. Thankfully, this is super easy for shops all over the country to do, because they do these all the time.
My exact though. Just 1 gear to replace. Should not cost much.
I completely agree with this, being a certified mechanic I have done transmissions like this
@@richardwelsh8448 yep
What typically happens is the transmission mounts are weak pieces of rubber to begin with and there is a fair amount of flex as the car gets older and these crumble, such that it tends to lock you out of gears under full acceleration. If you force it into gear anyways, it tends to damage the gears. The solution is an aftermarket solid transmission mount. It does add some noise in the interior, but the shifting gremlins go away.
EDIT - if it does lock you out, you have to back off the throttle until you can wiggle it into gear again. Power Shifting in this car is always interesting, which is why you're better off not doing it.
to keep the budget in mind I would try to rebuild the transmission. looking forward to all the upcoming videos on this car.
5th gear is grinding is a very common problem with these gen stangs, a friend of mine had the same thing happen and his stang only has 40k miles. ended up replacing the trans.
So I’ve been in this EXACT same situation with the getrag mt-82 transmission out of my old 2012 GT. I went ahead and rebuilt it. Not worth it. Source a good 15-17 mustang GT transmission, well worth the upgrade. They’re better inside and out. And while ur there buy a good short throw shifter to put on top as well, I went with an MGW, they don’t mess around (in a good way). Only thing you’ll need to change on the new trans in the drive axel adapter on the output shaft, it goes from 3 to 4 spline I do believe. You already got the right one so I think your all set. Good find Sam!
Really glad you’re doing this car over… It’s gonna be kind of cool seeing what you come up with
Rebuild the trans. Although mt82s are known for their weak points, usually they break due to the clutch.
Exactly, and people that dont know how to drive too lol
Finally a Mustang! Can’t wait to see more. Would love to see a few suspension upgrades on it too
Can't wait to see the new paint! I noticed right away that it had gotten some bad paint work but I know you'll have it looking factory fresh in no time!
Sam, rebuild the trans since only fifth gear is the only gear shot.
Typical Gen 1 Mt82 that was abused, usually 3rd and 5th gear go out, easy rebuild, problem is on the abused mt82s you might have one or two gears grinding but when you tear down you'll usually find multiple gears destroyed that weren't even grinding. Each gear is pricey, $80-100 per gear not including synchros ($60-80) and blocker rings. So rebuilding it could sum up to what a band new assembly price is.
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting content. I have a soft spot for hot buys/ fixer uppers and Mustang content in general. Thanks for making this.
Great Buy Samcrac! You're going to have a lot of fun with that one! As for the transmission if your budget is low just repair it maybe syncros or a shift fork. If you have some wiggle room then go for a H/O replacement. Can't wait for the next few vids on this after the upgrades and fresh paint it looks like its going to be awesome!! Enjoy!!!
Being that you bought it from a Mannheim Auction at least you got to drive it as much as you wanted on the test track. Good deals can be had on red light vehicles. Especially if they’re bank rigs. Banks hardly ever come protect their cars and sometimes don’t even line them so you can virtually steal some good ones occasionally if they’re on a no reserve lane/run. Some banks run every vehicle red light/as-is no matter how new or old the vehicles are because they don’t want to fuss with Arbritration. So you can get some great deals if you do your homework and drive as many as you can. Happy hunting! : )
s197s are amazing fun I imported one from LA to New Zealand only a 4.6 2007 manual but its brilliant fun to drive and I agree its totally old school tech, easy to get parts and easy to work on
How hard was the import process
@@lilstoopa9392 not really that hard if you do your research and understand yhe documentation and on road requirements. though it was pre covid, looking at it now it would cost alot more and take longer to ship
“4.6 boat anchor” still has my feelings hurt 😂😂 Funny as hell lol
I like that you do work on the floor. Builds character! Thanks for the work
You already know it has 2 busted gears. I would just rebuild it Sam. Then unload it fast before the market drops👍
I bet the gears aren't busted, it is most likely the shifter forks which are a well documented fail point.
true that mine appraised at 25 to 27k but i have low miles on it.
The market will never drop on manual v8's they're getting harder and harder to find.
Always appreciated this version of mustang as far as the history of the model goes.
Would love to find one of these in the exact shape you found! There are so many aftermarket parts you can get to make it look great both in and out and performance is a bunch of parts slapped on! Good luck! Can’t wait to see what you do with this stang!
Great project! Look forward to watching your progress.
*Sam's story telling skills are epic I hope one day I will be as good as this at telling my stories* 👏
This is the kind of project I can appreciate Sam. I hope you can make your budget work and end up with a solid build, when all is said and done. BTW, Have you checked with Ben, over at V-Tuned lately? When he set up his new shop, he had one, too many lifts. I believe that he unplugged the power from it. I'm not sure if he unbolted from the floor. It's a older version of a 2 post but I don't know if it is a Bend-Pak? Hit him up and see what's up with it.
Budget wise I would rebuild it. I recently blew out the spider gears in my wrx. Rebuilding it with a couple new gears cost less than $30. You can likely replace the individual gear that’s blown out. Hopefully not too much damage was done from the broken material.
That is some find great job, look forward to the rebuild
Love that you're doing a Mustang Sam! I'm a mustang guy and although I have a current generation now my first one was a 2011 and still love the S197 model. Please don't take too long on the video updates.
Sam, the best thing you can do for this car is to swap the MT-82 transmission for a T56. There's kits to do that. It's a much better transmission. The MT-82 is a fine transmission, if you're into European finesse driving. Most MT-82's get killed by aggressive shifting at the drag strip.
Life long Mustang owner and so- liking this project! Glad you opted for repaint. Transmission: with current gas prices, I’m guessing $7k means selling to someone for teenager to buy like the Monte Carlo. So, keep the trans stock, keep it a daily driver and let the next owner drive it and make that decision. There are so many routes, it’s just a matter of personal preferences. Might find a deal on Shaker entertainment head from parts resellers. Stock. Loss those side window louvers too. Check springs n shocks. Bemco performance brakes are not cheap, but lots of options. Keep it middle of the road, find that Pony Car a caring and loving home.
Great project. Already looking to the next episode.
ARMYTRIX exhaust and definitely a transmission upgrade!
o
Omg the videos of mustangs hitting everything but the finishing line were classic!
Dude love seeing these cars bought it motivates me with mine lol
Long time subscriber. This will be my favorite build. I have a 2013 Boss 302. Going to enjoy watching this one.
Love a Boss!!!
So happy to see mustang content on your channel can't wait to see you Build it
Definitely put a ratchet strap over top of the transmission to your transmission jack next time it'll help out a lot!
I probably would have started by confirming motor and transmission mounts were in good shape. I'd then confirm the shifter isn't worn and that the adjustment is correct. Doing so has saved me from having to replace a transmission I was told was no good
The motor mount usually is the case in FWD cars that rely in linkage, The transmission mount however as you mention can be a issue, also the bushing for the shifter, though in those gen mustang transmission are weak. I've gone through 2 of them and mine is a 6cyl with same MT82. My car currently at 197k miles I actually bought it for $1,200 off craigslist with a broken transmission as well.
Rebuild, and love seeing this much progress in 1 video
Excited for this build!!
I've never owned a Mustang but now I want one. What year Coyote should I look for?
13-14 is a sweet spot!
Alex, you must have extra blowers laying around??
15 and up
15 - 17 is gen 2 18 and up are gen 3 but 18 had a few gremlins
If I’m not mistaken there’s a 10 speed 5.0 after 2018. I want one of those.
I'd take it a transmission shop and let them rebuild it. 👍
Love the sound of that engine, who needs an in car stereo system when you can listen to that engine all day 😎😎
hey Sam, i use sleepers underneath the jack stands, can gain a good 6-12 inches of room if you bolt them together
9:45 NO play here ? its a joke theres a massive play LOL
BUY A LIFT ! you have 1.2M subs cmon bruh
for the transmission : just REBUILT to a shop to swap the 5th gear sprocket, its cheap like you like it
He’s chasing the controversy in the comments section!.. more controversy more views… that’s why whistling diesel has so many subs!.. he’d be the most controversial guy out there..
Doesn't look too bad for what you scooped it up for. A low mileage used transmission, some body work, a radio/AC unit and that covers most of it. Looking forward to this build...
I'd even keep the existing transmission for however long it lasts... I've driven a VW beetle-based buggy with a rough 2nd gear and almost nonexistent reverse for years!
Love the fact you slid those rims underneath!! Jackstands and hand Jack all good but when you rocking that car and cutting cant be too safe!! 👍
Finally a Stang 🐎😍, looking forward to build. Bring it on Sam
I love a scary muscle car that can almost kill you! It either makes you a better driver or kills you or wrecks you! I drive a 6.1 hemi challenger that's procharged to 650hp at the wheel and I love it! Love mustangs too!
I would take the transmission to a transmission shop and have 5th and 6th replaced with New synchros and have everything inspected. Have them inspect the shift forks too.
From a UA-cam interest point of view, a rebuild attempt is by far the best choice. Replacing things that are repairable is the way the world is going, but we should resist with all our might. I would not say the same about an automatic unless I had gone to school for it.
Amazing amazing engine, I’ll never forget ripping it in my buddies 6 speed GT, what a great summer. If you can handle the power it’s quite the thrilling experience. What a sound too.
Great car, looks brutal
You know what really grinds my gears???
People in the 19th century. Why don't they get with the freakin' program. It's called an automobile folks, it's much faster than a horse. It's a Family guy quote about a Mustang, sort of.
Step-mom?
Herpes?
This is my dream car. Color and everything. Good find!
Excited for this one!!! I have a 2010 gt myself. Yes it’s the slow 4.6 but same body style
The cluncking noise could also be the rear sway bar links. When those bushings get dry you hear that going over bumps.
Sam, I’ve gotta say, this is pretty much what I’d be looking for in a Mustang. This generation, 6spd trans, 5.0, dark grey with black interior. I’m excited to see what happens with this one, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it
I would look into a rebuild on the trans. A good local shop or do it yourself. You also may be able to find a low miles unit at a local pick n pull for a few hundred dollars
If you don’t want to eat walls change out the factory suspension. And if you call BMR suspension you can pick up aftermarket parts from their Tampa warehouse and they will usually do a cash price. You can buy a borla exhaust system from the headers back.
Great find.
Sam you are killing me wit this 1 video a month! We need more videos just like more cow bells on SNL
Good project !!! Nice choice Sam
THANK YOU! ........... Finally, a car i own.
I have the same-ish Kei car. A Daihatsu Mira 2012.
You're gonna love it!
you scored a great deal SAM!!! btw, looking forward for the Mira L502s video
I'd get a rebuild quote for stock replacement parts (probably a synchro) and upgraded parts.
That car would look awesome with a GT500 front nose setup.
I am jealous Sam! Looking forward to more videos on this car!
I have a boat anchor 4.6 GT that is still loads of fun to drive
Another great little build for the average, low buck class. Sweet 😎✌️
SAMRAC. I have a 01 S600. 130k runs and drives, water pump SEIZED today, and now is parked on side of road. $1000 and it's yours!! Need power steering pump, and ignition coil symptoms looked into. Clean title
I hope you did a fluid change first, the tr3650, and the mt82 with both angry transmissions known for being notchy, clunky, and grinding, specifically in 5th and 6th. Their typically bullet proof though.
The crash completion at the start slayed me dude hahahaha
Rebuild it but if an upgrade for the weak shifters are out there for a reasonable price I'd add that.
Hi Sam great videos ta !
I remember pulling the T5 out of my '87 Fox body 5.0 around 1990 (5th gear synchro failed). It turned out to not be that hard and I was able to do it my myself without a jack.
Ahh, an American icon this time. An everyman's car. A MUSTANG! I can't wait to see what all you do to this. I may learn something about my own.
I looked around and it seems good used trans are $2500 and up and new ones are $7,000 and up. I'd pull it apart and see what the issue is, it's probably broken shifter forks which is a common fail point.
11:44... omg i had to do the same exact thing with mine - for the exact same reason. You couldn't get to the bolts on the clamp. It was a simple swap from the exhaust to a Roush but that clamp position was the devil - I think in my case it was factory.
I love love this 5.0 Coyote Mustang project! Honestly I'd do whatever was cheaper as far as the tranny goes. If u can rebuild it and upgrade the internals I'd do that say make it like a Stage 2 level tranny that would be sweet!!
Have 2 coworkers with the same trans, and both failed, cost to rebuild was more than the replacement, and many internal parts aren’t available according to several shops.
depends on your goals, if you're wanting to turn it around for a profit, just replace fifth and maybe 6th gears and be done with it.
That into was great!
I love how he shows all the crowd killers at the beginning doin what they do best 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love these videos. That said, when you finish with projects like this, do you put on Craigslist to sell? (Take them back to the auction?l)
These builds are the reason we are here.
You should definitely rebuild the transmission. That is something I haven't seen on your channel yet and you would learn a lot from the experience.
Like this projects Sam!
Great find Sam. Loving the budget builds. Do a DIY tranny rebuild. It's not VooDoo.
Check out the 5 speed transmissions in the 05-10 mustangs. They are good and damn cheap and go right into the chassis.
I plan on buying something like this in the future. I want a 2012 Grey GT with the manual trans, I would only get one if it was in very/good condition
It probably just needs a couple parts in the transmission.
Did you check to make sure that the clutch didn't need to be bled?
Long time since I've watched your video's, like the more down to earth cars Sam.
Sounds like a synchro has popped out. Strip and rebuild it👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🍕
Looks like a fun project!
Enjoying this build 💪
Doing this as a budget build I would take apart the transmission and see what is going on. it could be an easy fix, or it could be a hard fix. but it costs nothing to take a look. If this was a high end build then I would say replace the transmission with a more robust one, I think the T56 was mentioned. so start with the easy, cheap option but have the plans ready for the other if need be.
check for the magnet inside the housing if it has metal flakes, the gears are likely busted else the problem could be that the hook inside has been worn either way an expert can tell right away if there it's worth refurbishing else I bet a junk yard has plenty of spare transmissions also does it change to gear when engine isn't running if yes then the syncronization is busted. If it would just refuse to go on gear then it would be a cheap fix since that is commonly a linkage problem.
I got a 2012 MT82 transmission rebuilt for $1300 in 2020, some local guy to me in louisiana. Maybe worth shopping around
my first was it would be safer to replace it altogether, but which as much as you have already spent on car, considering resale value for selling older mustang would make alot more sense just to rebuild it save the money put that money into seats radio and center console and fender / front side section car would be worth a pretty good amount after that lil bit of work
