@@MackTheMadman that is largely a myth. Humans largely run on auto pilot, with things such as breathing and body regulation being done automatically, independent of concentration. Spoon is using that against them, staying one step ahead of a single creature while delivering some pretty powerful hits. Fun-fact: Silver has antimicrobial properties which is why surgeons use to have tools made of it. It is also associated with light and Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt. All three of which could probably give werewolves a bad day.
Nice reference to greek mythology my guy. I always been interested in the story of Lycan i think his name was (the first werewolf who pissed off the gods by feeding them his children).
there is also the case of Judas,as he was paid 30 silver coins to sell out Yeshua (commonly known as Jesus), later regretting his decision and throwing the coins into the temple before hanging himself, which would give silver, mythologically speaking, both holy and unholy properties.
@@fukumarkzuckerburg That last bit could show silver as being a sign of balance between light and darkness, or good and evil, which one could argue that lycanthropy is a lack of said balance. Megan was always a werewolf, there's a few scenes where you can see a giant faint claw mark on her arm. She presumably was turned years ago when she went up there to study werewolves.
You'd be surprised with how much soldiers will fuck with each other. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an actual example of a joint SAS/Army operation where the SAS actually did kill an animal and throw it at the Army team
The whole SAS selection scenes was awesome. And the concept of using infantry as bait for the SAS was brilliant. That and these grunts are just likable characters, even for coats. : )
I agree the SAS are badass if they'd sent an actual SAS team and not a random platoon the plan probably would've worked. Though how was the army planning on transporting a werewolf even if the plan went perfectly.

I love this movie. It is not only funny, but it actually has the military actually giving it a damn good fight against the mythical monsters, actually technically beating them even. While not super competent if one looks at it from a realism standpoint, the soldiers are head and shoulders above the vast majority of government/armed forces in horror movies here and it shows. Now, if every horror movie had a mofo as tough as Spoon as part of the survivors....
Agreed, they even employ actual infantry maneuvers, like that retreat, stop and fire thing instead of going full auto, hipfiring and yelling like a cheap rambo knock off. It's just that they are woefully underequipped. Small arms really don't cut it when you are up against a werewolf after all!
I absolutely love the idea of modern military engaging with the myths of old. something about it just seems really cool. Like something we used to be afraid of as a species being overcome by modern tech and modern thinking
There was supposed to be a sequal. This was not only hinted at in the news paper at the end. But also confirmed that a sequel had been planned, and Neil Marshall is still trying to get 'Dog Soldiers: Fresh meat' made.
Cooper is a pretty underrated horror film protagonist, who cares for his squad and knows how to keep himself alive. He'd take on the Alien Predators and hillbilly mutants, and still survive.
Funny thing is, poison in general is recommended for use against werewolves along with silver and quicksilver. Specifically the plant hemlock is named and it is a pretty deadly poison to normal people as it is, let alone if they had the metabolism o& a werewolf.
Really? That's one that I never heard of, and many werewolves stories say that, alongside their evidently superior strength and durability, they have a much higher cure factor than humans, wouldn't that kill the venom before it kills the wolf?
DANIEL M. Going off of Roanoke’s theory it would actually make sense, do keep in mind that disease and poison are not the same thing, so if they are resistant to disease they can still be weak to poison. But at any rate that’s what I remember in their lore, quicksilver by the way is just another name for mercury essentially, so the recommended weapon against a werewolf is a dose of toxic metal, poison, and silver blades or projectiles.

I always assumed Megan was a werewolf already but was fighting the metamorphosis. She wanted to be normal but like she said, "It's that time of month. I'm out of time, and you're out of luck."
You assume right, there was a lot of hints she was already a werewolf the entire time and that the transformation for them can be more controlled with age. She never wanted to be normal though, she was plotting with her pack the entire time to get them.
She was always a werewolf and she led them to the house on purpose so her pack could kill them. I don't think she was fighting the metamorphosis. It was more of a game for them and a thrill of the hunt. She just bided her time when she wanted to change that's all.

@@krazykuz13cmc yes but upto that point in film and legends the mind of werewolves was almost pure animal with no higher thought other then a sharper cunning and understanding of how humans would react e.g mauling someone and leaving them screaming in view of their prey as it would not only cause panic but often trigger massive emotional outbursts like a mother rushing to help her wounded child even though she knows that the werewolves will storm through and kill everyone the moment she unbars the door - so the fact they could not only remember how to pull a trigger but more importantly how to chamber a fresh round and appear to have been counting the soldier's rounds as it uses the last round and doesn't even try to chamber another before throwing it back which in itself is a very odd behaviour its almost like it did all that just as a "how do you like it when someone shoots at you uh?" Fit of anger which again was never shown before in movies it was always - hunt, kill, eat.
@@mercurioslevin1877 Tbh that is quite in line with the older stories (starting with king Lycaon) that a werewolf is not scary cause of what it physically is(especially since werewolf denotes a man that turned into a wolf and not the "man-wolf" wolf in a more anthropomorphic form interpretation of more modern media) but because of that it has the mind of man, and that potential malice is more destructive than a wolf hunting to eat(even if it's your livelihood its eating) especially in a tradition that considers animals to be under humans by divine right. Also the older stories seem to imply that the mind is kept intact( examples would be the Breton Lai of Melion and Bisclavret, the Livonian Werewolf of Thiess of Kaltenbrun and livonians in general, or just any of the transformations that involve sorcery, removing the clothes or using a wolf skin/belt) and what the werewolf does is more dependent on the individual. TLDR: I suspect the family is perfectly aware of what is happening although they might be psychotic due to their power going to their heads. Oh and if the wiki is correct that theme of "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" would have been part of the sequel, so make of it what you will. Edit: oh and yes i suspect the werewolf was counting the shots, a capacity of 8 would be quite standard for a shotgun(even if the magazine seems to be a bit small for even a 7th shot, eh maybe a blooper)
And (only when you think back on it after watching the film) the werewolves' past victims' bones inside the wardrobe. The family literally have skeletons in the closet! :'D
Great video, although I think you missed one thing: Megan was werewolf from the start and was actively resisting the change until she knew that the soldiers had no way of escaping.
I dunno, seemed more to me like she was playing both sides of the field. She didn't want to be part of the family and was looking for an escape from being a part of it. The soldiers were her chance out, though it's never stated as to why that is. She holds off on changing as long as she can, hoping that the soldiers can free her, but they never do. Out of hope and out of time, she lies and lets the werewolves in, contributing to the kill instead of becoming a target. I just don't see any other reason for way she would hold back her change once they'd gotten the soldiers trapped in the house and destroyed their means of transportation, if she was just luring them to their deaths. And, no, I don't think it was part of a game because predators don't really play games when they're hunting for food.
@@eirmundgundnand9442 how do you know they were hunting for food and not sport (unless it is mentioned in the movie)? there is a lot of predators that do play games with their prey. cats, coyotes, hyenas, etc.

I think we can all agree Spoon was the MVP in this movie and went down like a champion, I'd like to think he might've actually been able to kill the werewolf if the 2nd one hadn't of showed up.
Kill it how? The werewolves got shot literally thousands of times with full auto weapons and kept coming. There's nothing he could've hit it with to top that.
@@majorcoats7777 I agree. All he was really doing was just pissing the first werewolf off stabbing it. It was more of an annoyance to the werewolf than anything. Eventually Spoon would have worn himself out and the werewolf would have killed him similar to the guy in the humvee jeep. Any damage he was doing to the werewolf was minimal.
This was a fun movie, though I wouldn't put it at the top of my favorite werewolf flicks. In my opinion, werewolves work best when their affliction is treated as a curse, as opposed to a fast-acting "infection". The torment and regret of characters like Lawrence Talbot or the main character from "An American Werewolf in London" makes the carnage they leave behind all the more tragic. All the same, I really wish werewolves had a larger presence in modern film and media; vampires, zombies and aliens have hogged the spotlight for far too long as it is.
There used to be quite a few in the early 2010s if I remember correctly, though they were aimed at a younger audience and not always the main focus of the show or movie. Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, that one nickelodeon movie with Victoria Justice, and probably Supernatural to name a few.

It's not the case for you to be pretty sure. If you watched the movie you'd know she ALREADY was a werewolf and that is HER house 😎 She says that before she dies.
@Wolf Generally in places like Britain and sometimes in North America receiving a bladed weapon, or something which could be considered a weapon can be seen as a sort of passive-aggressive warning. It's somewhat on par with how in Mexico vacationer homes which have been broken into and burglarized sometimes have machetes left on their beds, which is a more subtle way of saying "Don't call the police, we know where you live and we know you have a family". Although I'm probably wrong, this is just all from memory and I'm pretty sure that if I received a letter opener right now I'd be more concerned with why someone in 2020 was still sending letters when email exists
I just wanted to take a moment to say a couple things about this movie. This is my absolute favorite werewolf movie. My brother (who passed away in the first wave of covid) loved all things supernatural. This is his favorite one as well. Spoon and sarge were our favorites, and just like everyone we laughed so hard when Spoon hammers the hand. But one of the best aspects is these characters are fleshed out. The scene in the beginning where they are saying their fears is a great way to get to know them. Like cooper is afraid of spiders.... and women... spider women. Then he confronts a female werewolf. It makes them people. You CARE about them. You are sad when Spoon and sarge die. A lot of American movies forget that. My brother was my best friend. I watch these types of movies when I miss him the most. He never got to see Underwater... but (he is 11 years older than myself) read me the story of Cthulu when I was far to young to really understand it . So I like to imagine his watching it with me. Sorry this got long. I just got emotional watching the video

Fantastic film, one of the best werewolf films ever made. I always thought the transformation of becoming a werewolf must be fucking agony. I mean your bone and muscle mass is literally growing with horrific speed while you scream in pain. I think David's transformation scene in the equally excellent film, An American Werewolf in London, shows the sheer agony of changing form very well.
hi John:) One important thing Hollywood does not show/tell you, Once you turn, you can't turn back to Human form. I was told it's some kind of satanic, black magic ritual that only the most brave and dedicated satanists will attempt. The dedication part is never being Human again and of course, like you said, the crazy pain and and sheer agony is absolutely evil I heard It's just easier to turn into a vampire, it's a lot less painful. Vamps like to go out at night on hunts called "Tom cat prowl(like the song:) 2 of them lure you towards a certain place and the 3rd takes you out. They also do not leave bodies for police to find, they take their kills with them (had a run in with 2 of em) One of the few times i heard my guardian angels voice audibly, telling me to "go in the house:) It's a crazy world, John:) Christ bless :)
That scene was a marvel of practical effects and I think it was the first movie to ever really address that turning into a wolf is going to HURT. I mean, the bones and muscles aren't just stretching and growing. They're breaking and resetting themselves. Redefines pain.
I mean, I can't recall any transformation scene in any werewolf movie that didn't appear painful. The cracking and popping of bones, the pained expression, the doubling over, seriously, give me a scene in a movie where it looked pleasant.
Just to put this out there. Megan survived the shot to the eye. She transforms and snarls at Sam. Later she approaches sarge, swiping the lighter from his hand and staring him down with her only eye before meeting her end in the explosion. The healing factor is really something else.

Gonna be honest. I wouldn't put 30 Days Of Night into my top 5. That said, I do think it's a very underrated movie, and I think it'd sneak into my top 10 fave vampire films. I guess there's a small chance that I may flip-flop these 2 movies at numbers 1 & 2 if I'm being honest. I do like both films quite a bit. If you aren't familiar w/ Martin, please give it a look. Up front, if you aren't already aware of the movie, there's no way you'd consider it the best vampire film.....as it is a "different" kind of vampire movie. More of a serial killer who may or may not actually be nosferatu.....but he believes he is a vampire, and some of his family members do as well. They leave it intentionally vague in the film. Could be mental health stuff. Could be a vampire. Either way, this is a near-forgotten Romero classic that gets overshadowed by his more "famous" works, such as Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead, Creepshow, etc etc etc.
I never realized the idea of rapid aging as a possible consequence of rapid physical changes. Would make for an interesting consequence when you find one that finally just falls over and dies and partially reverts back into it's human form and then go "Hey that's jim but he looks like he's 60 years old!"
Well that is assuming the virus doesn't partly fix what causes the aging like the shortening of telomeres since it seems to ramp up the healing process, so it might just cause the immune response to be even more aggressive against failing or worn out cells to the point that you stay effectively young so long as you can keep yourself fed. Actually I would have to say it would considering it is accelerating the body to grow at thousands of times faster than normal meaning it's reproducing new cells at an ungodly rate (which is why as in the video he mentioned all the heat.) so that would also mean that the chances of cancerous cells would be multiplied thousands of times as well (not that we don't produce them on a daily basis as it is)
Oddly that happens in One Piece, a group of radicals get a drug that enhances the body and over the. Course of a day of increasing the amount of the drug they ate to keep doubling their strength. In the end once they come down they are radically to a very advanced age.

This is the best werewolf movie ever made. Hands down. The effects are simple and effective. The lore is consistent and well integrated. If you know a better movie please let me know, I haven't kept that close track of new werewolf releases in the last 10 years or so.
@@dboisrulesite19 To be honest, I don't think 'Van Helsing''s CGI werewolves have aged well. They haven't aged poorly per se, but they really haven't aged greatly.
Megan was always a werewolf, she was taken in and turned by them years ago when she came to investigate evidence of werewolves in the area and discovered the family. She was just slower to turn, for whatever reason, and the others used that to get her to help lure people in. Also, it would be cool if you did a video on the movie 'The Stuff', it involves a fungus-like organism that takes over people who eat it.
I don't think she was slower to change. More likely she was just biding her time when she wanted to change that's all. It was all just a game to them and an elaborate ploy for enjoyment of the thrill of the hunt. I think she was actually the leader of the pack.
@@brandonsavitski she was actively resisting the change as she used to be human and didn't want to be apart of the pack. She had hoped the soldiers could kill the pack and free her but as the night drags on and casualties mount, she loses hope. Yeah, she was. You can see the scars on her arm(s) in some scenes. They'd healed up exactly like that SAS guy's wound, which could just be the make-up team and how they applied fake wounds, but it's far too much of a coincidence that she just so happened to have massive claw scars when there are werewolves around lmao.
Yeah she wasn't slower to change she literally resisted the change so she could spy on the soldiers and later unlock the door The family was still living there in the house and even had a soup or stew still on the stove when the Squad entered the house so that alone tells me that there is a Full moon change as per the typical mythology
The accuracy of the military banter made this better and better and is often overlooked as one of the geniuses in detailing from the script. Loved this movie.

Nice story. I've watched a few movies on a whim not expecting much and glad I did. My favorite werewolf movies are The Howling and American Werewolf in London.
I believe that the woman was a werewolf before ever meeting the men. She mentions how she figured they would be her way out. Maybe I'm wrong but I always understood it as her thinking she had a way out then figuring she didn't anymore so she decided she would give up on the soldiers and turn to help the werewolves.
I agree she wanted the soldiers to be her way out, she didn't want to be a part of the pack. But when the soldiers failed to defeat the werewolves she had no choice but to stay with the family/pack

To me, I always considered Lycanthropy to be part disease, it's this anomaly in magical curses, it can adapt, it's normal and paranormal. It doesn't seem like a demon or some friend of Baba Yaga just made in in their witch hut backyard. It seems old, not primordial, but mysterious and ancient. It's one of those things only accidents of high level magic or deities being wild with power could create.
I like this. Even in dnd, the writers treat it as both a magic curse and a disease. Which is why spells to remove either, i.e. Remove Curse and Greater Restoration, both work.
I suppose it would depend on if the disease needs to directly enter your bloodstream or if it can enter through your digestive tract. Some blood borne diseases can’t survive stomach acids, so it might also depend on if he has a cut in his mouth.

Exactly! She was a werewolf the entire time. Not because she cut her hand on the glass. I honestly think she was the Alpha of the family.
He wouldve decapitated it somehow
If the second one wouldnt have shown up it wouldve been dead. That's why the first one was on the ground not doing anything
@@Dravianpn02 I agree
This was a fun movie, though I wouldn't put it at the top of my favorite werewolf flicks. In my opinion, werewolves work best when their affliction is treated as a curse, as opposed to a fast-acting "infection". The torment and regret of characters like Lawrence Talbot or the main character from "An American Werewolf in London" makes the carnage they leave behind all the more tragic.
All the same, I really wish werewolves had a larger presence in modern film and media; vampires, zombies and aliens have hogged the spotlight for far too long as it is.
I like The Howling and American Werewolf in the London. Those are my favorite Werewolf movies.
So True
Exactly! It's a rare writer and director who know what to do with a werewolf!
The director of this film specifically wanted to avoid the trope of the tragic werewolf
There used to be quite a few in the early 2010s if I remember correctly, though they were aimed at a younger audience and not always the main focus of the show or movie. Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, that one nickelodeon movie with Victoria Justice, and probably Supernatural to name a few.
Megan was a werewolf to begin with. Maybe there are different versions of the movie but I specifically remember her saying that. She said she actually lived in that house with those people as one of them
Yeah I thought I was crazy for remembering it like this, I think this dude kinda forgot that point a little bit cause I remember it being like the big twist of the film. The soldiers even mention it dont they cause they see her in one of the pictures, and how she was actually coaxing them into doing these things that get them picked off by the wolves. Like getting the Jeep out of the barn. She knew the wolves were their!
She was always a werewolf and she led them to the house on purpose so her pack could kill them. It was more of a game for them and a thrill of the hunt. She just bided her time when she wanted to change that's all.
You can even see her initial scar from when she was turned on her arm at 8:48

@@Sarahc-mn1tr I'm think she led them back there because it's like a kill den
I think so too. But she played nice doggie to get out as well.
She was definitely already a werewolf. I've seen the movie about 15 times. There's no doubt about it.
It's not the case for you to be pretty sure. If you watched the movie you'd know she ALREADY was a werewolf and that is HER house 😎 She says that before she dies.
love it how back in 2003 gifting a silver letteropener was still socially acceptable and not deemed as some form of vague threat

God rest his soul. Sorry for your loss.

Your brother sounded like a top bloke.
I'm now a 6'4" adult and HEEELL yes my legs hurt as a kid. Felt like someone was hammering my bones from the inside sometimes
I thought that growing pains was just a phrase until on my way to 6’4 my legs felt the same.
I grew a foot in a year, that sucked. 5' at 16, 6' at 17. I definitely don't miss that.
I went from being the second shortest person in school to one of the tallest. I rememeber sitting on the edge of the playground one time unable to move due to my legs aching so much, so I know your pain.
Worth it though, now I'm constantly having to reach things down for people and my back hurts more often tha-......wait a sec......
Dunno I'm 6'3 and I went from 4'7" to 6'3" within a year and never had any growing pains. But then again I also chugged milk a gallon at a time and ate like I was being starved.
@@SilvaDreams so eating akin to someone going through a massive growth spurt? Nothing unusual. Not everyone goes through growing pains, and not in the same way. When I hit puberty and started shooting up in height and my shoulders started broadening, my back would often be in a lot of pain.
NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT THIS MOVIE!
One of my favorite films, and easily my favorite werewolf film.
Fantastic film, one of the best werewolf films ever made. I always thought the transformation of becoming a werewolf must be fucking agony. I mean your bone and muscle mass is literally growing with horrific speed while you scream in pain. I think David's transformation scene in the equally excellent film, An American Werewolf in London, shows the sheer agony of changing form very well.
hi John:)
One important thing Hollywood does not show/tell you,
Once you turn, you can't turn back to Human form. I was told it's some kind of satanic, black magic ritual that only the most brave and dedicated satanists will attempt. The dedication part is never being Human again and of course, like you said, the crazy pain and and sheer agony is absolutely evil
I heard It's just easier to turn into a vampire, it's a lot less painful.
Vamps like to go out at night on hunts called "Tom cat prowl(like the song:) 2 of them lure you towards a certain place and the 3rd takes you out. They also do not leave bodies for police to find, they take their kills with them
(had a run in with 2 of em) One of the few times i heard my guardian angels voice audibly, telling me to "go in the house:)

Good catch! I forgot about that.
Yes Roanoke, my legs hurt like fuck during puberty. My legs hurt, my joints cracked all the time, my throat hurt perpetually all the time as my voice deepened. Best vampire movie in my opinion: 30 days of night
Best werewolf movie in my opinion: this
It solidified how i see werewolves.
No allegorical, scientific nor supernatural mumbo-jumbo, just a large man-shaped wolf beast that devours people with a crunch.
We have the same taste 👀
Gonna be honest. I wouldn't put 30 Days Of Night into my top 5. That said, I do think it's a very underrated movie, and I think it'd sneak into my top 10 fave vampire films.
My favorite vampire movie is probably George A. Romero's Martin......and my 2nd favorite is Let The Right One In (not the American version Let Me In....but the original film).
I liked Near Dark. It was a pretty good vampire movie.
Hard to disagree

Because UA-cam hates quality content.
this movie badly needs a spinoff, I kinda feel that another Brit movie "Howl" is somehow a shared universe or something

Question wouldn't the last guy be a werewolf too seen the sword when in his mouth and most likely dripped some blood into his system?
Huh good point
I suppose it would depend on if the disease needs to directly enter your bloodstream or if it can enter through your digestive tract. Some blood borne diseases can’t survive stomach acids, so it might also depend on if he has a cut in his mouth.

Don't forget you always have a skeleton inside you!
GET SPOOKED
No, you are inside a skeleton. The thing that lets you think is you, sort of, so you are wearing bone armor with flesh armor on top.

I'm a synthesized organism; living tissue over ossified endoskeleton.
My taxidermy humans would disagree with your assessment if they where still capable of speech.
