Riddick says "Not for me." Because the captain lady said that she'd die for her crew. He's basically saying that she shouldn't have died for his sake because he was a hardened criminal that didn't deserve to be saved at the expense of a good person.
Riddick is honestly a true anti hero, he knows he isn't good but doesn't want to see good people suffer, hiding behind his mask as a killer only to be someone who does care is honestly great
Fun fact, Yellowstone is NOT some badass human warrior. They actually made a whole video diary for his hunt for Riddick and in one of them he admits to figuring out that Riddick, despite his persona, has a soft spot for kids. So Johs, Yellowstone, using a kid as bait and forces Riddick into a situation where he has to either stand by and watch a kid die or save the kid and get himself fucked up enough that Johns can take him down. So a great fighter? No. Smart and ruthless as a rattlesnake? Yes.
@@r3dr4te963 No. Its why Riddick told Jack not to cry for him and why....spoiler alert when Riddick meets Johns father Riddick actually complements the man for both his honor and courage, stating that he is nothing like his son.
Fun bit, Claudia Black (Jackie / the miner) was filming on Farscape at the same time. Both productions shared her. When Farscape would stop shooting, Claudia (in Farscape costume) was driven to the airport, loaded on a plane, and flown to where Pitch Black was being filmed. She would learn her lines and sleep on the flight. On set, she would shoot her scenes, be loaded back on the plane heading for the Farscape team (wearing her Pitch Black costume), learn her lines for Farscape on the way and sleep. Each set would clean the other's costume so it could be worn by her and she said half the time she had no idea where she was.
Riddick thrashing the chains when Fry was being attacked in the caves was to show Riddick's superior sense of hearing. He could hear Fry crying out for help when no one else could.
@@shaolin95 There have been a few instances like this where it seems he's maybe not giving the movie his complete attention as he watching. I don't mean that as a knock against him. He's probably multi tasking, as well as only paying attention for clues to the creature(s) rather than trying to follow the plot closely. I don't remember specifically what it was but speaking about the sharks in Deep Blue Sea he said/asked something that made me feel he wasn't paying full attention. To me it's not unforgivable though.
@@greasybumpkin1661 Yes, but the eyes were retconned in the director's cut of "Chronicles of Riddick," and I think also in the Butcher bay + Assault on Dark Athena game, to be a part of Riddick's heritage that needed to "be awakened." Also, not all of his race have the ability. Only "Alpha Male" Furyans have it. Because Vin Diesel has the imagination of a 12 year old.
Riddick yells "Not for me!" because Rhada Mitchell's character Carolyn told him she'd die for them but not Riddick. So when she dies saving him, it affects him emotionally. It's as emotional as the character gets.
I'm 32, I seen this when I was about 10 for the first Time, and many many times after and it never occurred to me why he said this until seeing this...🤦
@CrayonEater0311 I'm with you on that one. I was 38 and re watched it, that's when I figured it out. I hadn't seen it in a very long time, but it's kinda obvious when i did.
She says this as she was picking him up, lol I heard that when I first saw this movie, she kept telling him that she said she would die for them not for him and then she gets yoinked so he calls out after her with the words she was JUST saying to him over and over to get him to move. I felt the emotions in that scene and I still feel them today when I think about when I first watched this.
Riddick is, as we all can agree, a very cynical and pragmatic individual. That why it hurt him, when she was at her worst... she saved his life. When she had every reason not to. She still did it. He BELIVES she was stupid for doing so, he wouldn't have, but he knows she did it because she was, at her worst, a good person. And he hated that about her dying. Good people shouldn't die. She was the wrong person to die. And he... was thankful. And the only way to repay the favor was by justifying her action in saving his life by getting off that damn planet. And that means Riddick HAD to care. And that made him angry.
Jezz... how are people not getting this? I am 35 and saw it at release and many times after and it was like crystal clear. Now I'm reading this and the comments... I'm just baffled. It's not like that movie was philosophical/emotional challenging.
I forgot what guy it was but there was a famous conservationist and hunter from the american midwest who made a hypothetical book about the majority of vegetation being devastated and turned into sparse treeless wasteland (not apocalyptic) by massive overpopulated herds of deer. The studies about prey animal overpopulation is why hunting seasons exist, but the same can be said for predators. I think this planet suffered the same thing. At one point there was probably just as much adapted topside prey animals and vegetation as much as underground, but the bioraptors grew too numerous and eventually led to the whole planet being overwhelmed. Judging from their skeletal forms and the fact it's noted they devour their dead, it's safe to say this has had just as much a negative effect on them as the planet's ecosystem. The novelization of this book is actually pretty good, the fact it talks about how Riddick had a faint satisfaction at plowing through the bioraptors at the end because they took away someone he actually came to care for was good character development compared to... well.. any of the movies related to this. He also said "not for me" because he knew he wasn't a good person and didn't want anyone going out of their way for him, because Riddick knows his lifestyle puts others in harm's way, which also plays into why he's anti-social bordering on coming off as a intimidating figure, he doesn't want anyone getting close to him because anyone that does usually meets a bad end. He's just cursed to be alone really. Escape from Butcher Bay, a game based on the Chronicles of Riddick, also gives a good prequel to explain Johns and Riddick's backstory.
"he doesn't want anyone getting close to him because anyone that does usually meets a bad end." The great thing about the Riddick movies is that this movie sets that up and the sequel pretty much confirms it. There's like 2-3 people out of that whole group that he cared about, one dies in this movie and the other two die later on despite Riddick defending them and even telling them not to follow in his footsteps.
It's about balance. A simple example is squirrels and acorns. Acorns produce a very strict amount say 100 acorns every year...the population of animals that eat the acorns can be sustained on that consistent crop...limiting population. However, every 7 years (estimate) the oaks all produce a massive quantity of acorns that can't all be consumed. This gluttony of acorns can't all be eaten by the local animal population this means more acorns can germinate in those events than the consistent years. Benefiting both the oaks and those that rely on it
it is the same for prey. its why sport hunting exists for both. cause here is the issue. with prey, as you mentioned, they will eat the vegetation until there is none left and they begin to die, which negatively impacts predators. on the flip side, if there are to many predfators, they will eat all the prey and they begin to starve and die. its why tags are sold for both. or in Texas case with hogs, no tags needed, just come in and blow hogs away with helicopters and fully auto guns, so long as you pick up the bodies, your good. an example of this is actually in my state, Arizona(USA in case no one knows where Arizona is who lives outside of USA). every year our state sold tags to hunt wild horses. this did multiple things. first off, it kept the population in check at a sustainable level. second, all the money made from the tags went into anti poaching, wildlife protection and stocking of rivers(as all the money does). then finally, the meat from the horses was brought to open pot places to feed homeless and such. now, environmentalist wack jobs(and normal people like an aunt of mine) lost their ever loving fucking minds every year over this, screaming how wrong it is, how could you kill poor horses, blah blah blah. so our wise, wise governor, instead of telling them to pound sand, listened to them and made it illegal to hunt horses. the result? they grew at a uncontrollable rate, they couldnt ship enough out, they were eating vegetation and drinking the water. at one point a native american smelled something vile and when he went over a hill, there were 500 dead horses around a tiny little puddle of water. all cause these things ate the plants, drank the water, then just mass died. i brought this up to my aunt and she blew up at me and yelled at me(over facebook), cause how dare i suggest this was because they stopped hunting horses and she COULD NOT rap her head around that hunting horses had positive effects to prevent THAT exact thing from happening(to which my mom said i should stop because ill never convince her). so yeah.......... thats why sport hunting is a good thing XD (and yes, that counts as sport hunting)
1:17 at the time it was supposed to be a reflective chemical injected behind his eyes so he could see better in the dark like a dog or cat, so he'd always wear welding goggles in the light. Later on it turns out he was lying
@@tabathacarruthers5122Wasn’t it also revealed in Escape from Butcher Bay that he didn’t actually get his Eyeshine from the Surgeon, but rather it was an Alpha Furyan ability? Either Riddick was lying or he was in complete denial about it until Chronicles of Riddick.
@Aro9313 In Escape from Butcher Bay, he got his eyes through I would say mystical means. He heard a voice say you've been blind too long and he felt his eyes change. Then he went through a tunnel dark tunnel and a guy ask him what he sees, Riddick says everything.
This theory is from ages ago, but my friends and I kicked around the idea that the invasive species was sent there for study due to the ‘forever day’ of the world it would be easy for the researchers to simply head upwards of the population got too aggressive, but they hadn’t taken into account the eclipse and got themselves and their families eaten because they under underestimated their research subjects.
IIRC there's a (very brief) explanation in Pitch Black that the settlement they find belonged to terraformers or something along those lines. Been years since I watched PB but I do specifically remember them commenting on the ruins they come across, and it's never in any way implied that the bioraptors were transplanted onto the planet from elsewhere. Furthermore, the bioraptors never show up in any of the subsequent CoR movies.
Riddick is a monster, but his demeanor in this and later films show that, deep down, he wants to be a good guy. His life only took him down bad paths, so he never had the chance to grow in a positive way. When he tried to escape on his own (which he probably assumed any of them would do) only to get confronted by the pilot, he believed that she would do the same. Even after it becoming known that she was willing to dump the passengers to save the ship, the pilot refused and demanded that Riddick save every one. That seems to have struck a chord in him, and he willingly goes back to save the others. So when he gets wounded, and believes he should be left behind, the pilot comes to save him. Only this time, she dies in the process, horrifying him. He was appalled that someone so "good" died trying to save someone so beyond redemption like him. "She can't have died for me! Not for me!" It's an amazing line that shows what Riddick is deep down, and his growth through the movie.
I liked Riddick in this movie. I hated what Riddick became in the other films after Vin Diesel decided to make Riddick an ultimate bad ass from a race of ultimate bad asses.
*Is* he a monster? If memory serves, this movie never explained exactly what he did or why aside from some vague claim that he killed someone, which... I can think of several circumstances where that could happen that aren't just murder.
He's been hunted due to his heritage. I'm sure the powers that be have been chasing him for a long time. When you're on the run you're going to do what you have to do. I didn't see anything that made him a Monster
@@DaRkLoRdZoRc I think the problem is that this movie was made with Riddick being one type of character but then Vin Diesel got full of himself and decided to use the character as a vessel to fulfill his lifelong Dungeons & Dragons fantasies. In Pitch Black Riddick was a human whose mother abandoned him as a newborn i.e. found in a dumpster with his umbilical cord still around his neck. That bad start led to him making bad choices/being a bad person. e.g. When Johns is trying to convince Riddick to kill the girl and drag her body behind the sled Johns said something to the effect of: "in war time medical doctors decided who lived and died. It's called "triage." Riddick replied "when I did it they kept calling it 'murder." Implying he had killed multiple people. There was ambiguity to the character but a part of what made his redemption arc work is that he probably really was a bad person. Again, he absolutely was going to leave them on the planet to die. Johns also told Fry Riddick knows how to fly a ship by sharing that Riddick cut the throat of the pilot of a ship that was taking him back to prison. Something we don't have to assume was done in self defense. Riddick will kill people and he will leave them to die. That's why it was so good when at the end of the movie he said "Riddick is dead. He died somewhere back on that planet." He no longer wanted to be Riddick because he knows Riddick is bad. Then Vin Diesel got the rights to the character and decided "Actually, it wasn't Riddick's mother that abandoned him. It was this Necro king guy that wanted to wipe out all of Riddick's race because Riddick is of a race of ultimate bad asses that are the only ones that can stop him. He killed every member of riddick's race by strangling them with their umbilical cords. The subsequent movies and mythos was all about jerking off Vin Diesel's ego.
Yea, he didn't believe he deserved someone else to die for him. Not that he wouldn't kill to survive, but the Family Man's morals are mysterious indeed.
She goes back to the ship and Riddick tells her "Leave them and come with me." She says "I would die for THEM." So when she saves his life and dies he says " NOT FOR ME! " She was not supposed to die for his sake. Riddick is a good person as clearly shown by him returning to save everyone, based off of her words. Her death temporarily broke him because when the going got tough, she showed herself to also be a good person.... unlike Yellowstone. There you go.
I'd read that a bit differently - expressing the dynamics in simple terms like 'good' and 'evil' doesn't seem right here. Fry initially didn't want to die for the passengers during the landing but then came around to see them as people, not just cargo - and was willing to sacrifice herself to save them. Riddick found that 'interesting' - the will to sacrifice your life for another. But he did not consider himself worthy of that kind of sacrifice - not sure if he considered himself 'evil', but definitely he felt he was indebted to Fry after she sacrificed herself for him. We know that Riddick would leave people like that in the past, so why act different now? The only thing that comes to mind is respect for Fry's sacrifice, the feeling of being indebted, the moral obligation to pay the debt by completing what she was unable to because she sacrificed herself for him - the only way to achieve this would be to save the remaining passengers that she no longer could. Does that make him and overally 'good' person? Not necessarily. It feels more like a matter of personal code or honor that's more important than self-preservation in this particular case.
Well said. Though it has less to do with being good and more to do with being honorable. Riddick was respecting how she changed, was willing to die for her duty despite initially being willing to kill them to save herself. Riddick is a cynic. He tries to be a decent person but he expects the worst from everyone so he often doesn't see the point of risking himself for them. He also genuinely believes that the things he has had to do to survive make him irredeemable. Not as bad as Johns, but still not worth saving.
@@0LT4R One slight correction. Riddick was known for, and was revealed in the special features in this movie to have been how he was actually caught by Yellowstone, because he DID go out of his way to save people. Particularly kids. Basically Yellowstone learned that Riddick had trouble leaving kids out to die so he baited a trap with one to catch Riddick.
@@zaerogartorias9890 Fair enough. Its not meant as a criticism on my part but I personally find going over the nuisances the more interesting part of discussing the more morally grey characters like Riddick.
Can't believe Roanoke actually out here insinuating that animals don't have inner monologues. My dog had an inner monologue, and I should know, I narrated her thoughts out loud,

I remember being shocked learning Pitch Black and Riddick were the same universe because when the Riddick game came out the characters name sounded familiar to me and then I remember the SciFi channel airing Pitch Black and going "oh crap that's where I heard of him!" Edit: Okay "shocked" is a bit exaggerating, but it was still surprising because this is the pre-"everything is a connected universe because MCU made so much moneys" era of media where it was lucky something established outside it's debut media.
You're easily shocked huh?. You must have had a heart attack when they kept making things with Riddick in it. Warning, there's another film coming, get yourself prepared.
@@scottneil1187 Easily shocked? Shocked may be a bit over exaggeration on my part but before Marvel had its MCU moment and ultimately ruined the industry with oversaturation of intellectual properties, uh YEAH. I would say a film that everyone slept on having connections to an underrated gem of a game was wild to find out in the early 2000s. And yes I heard about the new Riddick film
Also remember there is a animated movie that takes place between pitch black and chronicles of Riddick. It actually adds a.lot more info on Riddick and what happened to the other two who escaped with him
I've watched all 3 of the movies at least 10 times each and I never knew of this because I was just watching off the DVDs. Ty for this knowledge now I must watch it.
Fun fact, actually. It does say how Johns caught Riddick in the bonus material in the Pitch Black DVD. I forget the exacts, as it has been years since I saw it, but the meat and potatoes is that Johns took advantage of Riddick's soft spot for kids to capture him while he was actively holding a girl from falling into a ravine or something like that.
@@david-468No, it's a rewrite do that Riddick is actually catchable by humans, or else it would mean that the dude was as strong as a warrior race which is more BS than to believe that Riddick doesn't like hurting kids

Or just being that species? They would just kill him immediately
@@david-468 Riddick really never wanted anything more than to be left alone. That's why he sequestered himself on the ice planet between Pitch Black (and Dark Fury) and The Chronicles of Riddick, and then got pissed when he thought Imam sold him out. It's stated in the lore that he's an alpha Furian, a pinnacle of an already superlative and warrior-like subrace of humanity, and at some level he knew that he wasn't normal. He was dumpster baby after the Necromongers killed his race, and it's stated in the lore that he repressed that memory to instead remember it as his mother dumped him off in said dumpster after he was born, rather than getting strangled with his umbilical by a Necromonger and presumed dead. While I admit that does seem a little far-fetched, please read up on the source material before you go spouting nerd-rage chotch.
Pitch Black was such an amazing introduction for the Riddick character. He was a wildcard that kept you guessing right until the very end. You spent the whole movie waiting for him to screw everyone over, and it wasn't until years after the first watch that I realized he spent the whole movie waiting for them to screw him over. It's a way better movie than people give it credit for. Also, the "Not for me" line was because Riddick explicitly asked Fry before if she would die for THEM. He doesn't even see himself as a person, so he never expects anyone else to. No one would ever come back for him. Then she did, and got got for it. She was one of the very few genuinely good people Riddick had ever met, and she died helping someone who didn't deserve it. Again, the movie is better than it has any right to be.
Good video. Btw, the reason the ships were not armored to withstand space debris is that they fly along flight routes that are supposed to be free of debris, and they were off course (if I am remembering correctly). Kind of like how most cargo/cruise vessels arent rated for reefs/pack ice: they aren't travelling through it and if they are, things have gone VERY wrong.
The glowing worms showed that only nearly everything was eating by the creatures the sequels were fun but the creatures from this movie has been by far his most challenging and deadly opponents.
That's what I thought, but didn't they say they were larva of the bioraptors? Which I thought was dumb at first, why would an animal so averse to light give it off as an infant. Until I remembered they are highly cannibalistic, it would make a great defense mechanism to protect themselves from the more mature ones.
Riddick's "Not for me" statement was pretty simple to understand if you watched the whole movie and paid any attention....It has a lot to do with Captain Fry's whole character arc. In the beginning of the movie, during the crash sequence, Fry was releasing the rear compartments of the ship in order to try regaining control. When she got to passenger compartments she said: "I'm not dying for them", showing she was willing to purge anything, or anyone, if it helped her regain control, and survive. In another scene later on, Riddick tries to tempt Fry onto the escape ship, abandoning the last 2 passengers. Fry fights him, but Riddick inevitably comes out on top; literally. He asks her: "You'd die for them?" She eventually says," Goddamn it, Riddick. Yes, I would die for them. " Riddick takes his shades off and studies her for a moment, sees her determination, and simply says: "Interesting". In a scene a little bit later on Fry approaches an injured Riddick after he had gone off into the dark fighting multiple raptors. She grabs him and starts dragging him towards the ship and to try to encourage him says: C'mon Riddick, said I'd die for them. Not for you. Its only a few moments later when everything slows down and the audience hears a flesh slashing sound. The scene slows as both Fry and Riddick study each other and the audience tries to figure out who was just mortally wounded. A moment later Fry is snatched off into the night. Riddick, showing a moment of humanity says, in rage and horror: "Not for me!" He imploring Fry, or fate, maybe even god that it wasn't supposed to be this way as she wasn't supposed to die for him.

You should cover Stargate. The Goa'uld parasite extends life, gives takes over the immune system, and gives increased strength. Also it has Kurt Russell! The TV show Stargate SG-1 would also be a treasure trove of topics to cover because they get infected with something every 3 episodes. In episode 1 they even expand on the Goa'uld parasites that they can actually live symbiotically with (modified) humans. It also has MacGyver! I know it's a TV show but it's hour long episodes and they do try to explain how infections work.

It's always wild to me that the best depictions of lovecraft monsters have no Lovecraft connection. These are nightgaunts. Hell, this whole movie is basically futuristic Conan.
@SerbianLifter997 oh, I appreciate the frontier horror aspects also but it plays out like a Robert Howard story. I can see the Dune elements in the later movies. None of them were as good as this first movie though.
@@Loreweavver it...literally doesn't? At no point is Conan ever this vulnerable and has to rely on the scantily clad woman he's saved/slept with to bail him out from Lovecraftian creatures. Secondly he slays Shoggoth's, Deep Ones and Beholders as if they're any other creature, only causing him bouts of pain in his skull because his willpower is so strong their ability to drive mortals insane doesn't phase him. What Conan books have you read by the way? I noticed you retracted your statement from saying it's like a futuristic "Conan" film to now saying it's like a Robert E. Howard story. So which is it? because neither is true. I own several serials in black and white of Conan's adventures as well as a comic and a few novels, for context.
@SerbianLifter997 top of my head, the red nail has Conan getting put in his place by a lady he wants to sleep with and a fight with a dinosaur in the opening few pages. Conan is often either captured or put in a place where he needs to be saved like a Greek hero from whatever princess or queen or heroine is in the story. I could make a reading list for you if you're genuinely interested. You seem to be confused by my wording in some way. The film "Pitch Black" is like a Conan story written by Robert E. Howard, the author of Conan stories.
Fun trivia fact about armor against space debris: It does already exist, at the moment, what is used on some satelites, is called ripple shields. They consist of multiple layers of foils with distance between the layers. But if your vehicle is constructed in space and weight is not that big of an issue anymore, you would definitly add armor plating for such a vehicle if you don't have energy shields or something like that.

Escape from Butcher Bay (Game) actually has him receive said "Shine Job" and yeah, it's why he has Eyes that can see in the dark, before that he doesn't have them. Canon status for the game is questionable but Vin Diesel did reprise his role for the game.
Honestly I enjoyed the game's interpretation. It adds to Riddick's mysterious and antagonizing character when you learn what really happened vs what he tells Kira
Based off of the second movie it's revealed that Riddick is part of a race of humans called Furyans that have two groups to them alphas and normal ppl, alphas have genetic mutations that allow them better to survive on the planet Furya

Idea for him to an in depth video on the biology of ghouls from tokyo ghoul and how they work in IRL terms rather than what they use in the manga/anime.
I'm pretty sure it was never said that his eyes were an evolutionary trait of the Furians. The few other Furians we see weren't shown to have this same trait (they could see just fine in daylight without needing the goggles that Riddick has to wear). I believe it was the second movie that explains/insinuates that Riddick's eyes are that way because he had someone replace his eyes with those of the big cat-like creatures that are in the prison on Crematioria.
In certain scenes it almost looks like they use their large tails as a third limb. Presumably, they can balance and (at least to some extent) support their weight on it.
Maybe Fly Girl's sacrifice softens up Riddick to the point where in the other movies, he gives some people a chance but still generally doesn't trust others (most of the time rightfully so).

There's an anime set before the sequel which I've never seen. There's of course the underrated Chronicles of Riddick which got the edgy no pain feeling death worshipping Nercromongers. And finally There's Riddick, the last movie that's got sand serpent thingies. Much content, much wow 👌

I love the chronicles of Riddick. Started with the xbox 360 game, Escape from Butcher Bay. Now I watch all the movies constantly. Vin diesel is even making the final one!
Cole Hauser's character, Johns, still has the most gnarly death scene imo. Dude throws down with Riddick, for the 20th time appearantly, gets slashed up the back, skewered by a huge bioraptor, and then gets his head turned into a giant vagina. Good times.
Even more than the woman who was torn apart by the equivalent of the kryll from Gears of War? Despite the slash from Riddick, he died in an instant. Meanwhile, the chick was basically put in a blender and was still alive for the few seconds that her removed head was still a whole. 😏
@@IchigoKurosaki_ Im just sayin Johns was a beast. All the runner up bounty hunters that went after Riddick were just 10 second meat. Tombs survived Riddick twice. Johns CAPTURED Riddick twice.
Johns is made more capable once you play the games. Really explains how Riddick was his ahab, ultimately consuming him entirely just to finally catch him. And even then he fails, just like Ahab.

Really enjoyed you covering this. I watched this film on a super old TV when it was first shown on normal TV, with adverts and everything. It was so bad during the almost totally pitch black sections I could hardly see anything. Wasn't until watching it years later on a much more up to date TV that I saw it like it's supposed to look. I really enjoyed it and the others, so I would definitely enjoy having you cover those too. I always wanted the chronicles to be more than just 3 films.
I kind of wish this movie had come out when I was a teenager. I would have loved it. But being nearly 30 with an environmental science and biology degree, I sat in the theater thinking, "so much of this movie doesn't make any sense!" And Vin Diesel's character was pretty hard to take seriously. I still kind of liked it, but also thought it was really dumb.

@@ressljs I don't think it's an issue with Riddick (the character) specifically, to be honest. Pitch Black seems to be one of those horror movies that doesn't take itself super seriously, sort of like Tremors. They both play themselves fairly straight and narrow but not excessively so.

One of my Step-Dad’s favourite films; many memories as a Kid watching this in our little Shack on fortnightly visitations, watching Pitch Black and playing AOE 1 and Pharaoh: Cleopatra.
I never liked the retcon that Riddick was a Furyan as if he could be misremembering an event such as major prison surgery or have no idea he was a different species…
Furyans aren't a different species. There is actually a pretty cool bit of lore on this, where early humanity in that universe realized that they would need to adapt to life off earth and so they developed some tech (probably bioengineering) to adapt humans to hostile environments. This created 4 "elder races" including the Furyans and Necromongers who were adapted to very hostile non-human environments (with Furya being the most extreme). They learned terraforming, so this practice stopped, and they started adapting planets to baseline humans rather than creating superhumans who could adapt to hostile environments.
I’m excited for your Furian evolutionary biology video. Its states in Escapse from Buther Bay that he got the Shine job to help him escape the subterranean areas under the prison.

She says this as she was picking him up, lol
I heard that when I first saw this movie, she kept telling him that she said she would die for them not for him and then she gets yoinked so he calls out after her with the words she was JUST saying to him over and over to get him to move.

"he doesn't want anyone getting close to him because anyone that does usually meets a bad end."
The great thing about the Riddick movies is that this movie sets that up and the sequel pretty much confirms it. There's like 2-3 people out of that whole group that he cared about, one dies in this movie and the other two die later on despite Riddick defending them and even telling them not to follow in his footsteps.
i love the games and the moives so much man.

It was a mining colony, there's no evidence of any scientific endeavours.
Not for me!"
It's an amazing line that shows what Riddick is deep down, and his growth through the movie.
A perfect example of the antihero.
That bad start led to him making bad choices/being a bad person. e.g. When Johns is trying to convince Riddick to kill the girl and drag her body behind the sled Johns said something to the effect of:
"in war time medical doctors decided who lived and died. It's called "triage."
Riddick replied "when I did it they kept calling it 'murder." Implying he had killed multiple people.
"Not for me" was in reference to the captain saying, "I'd die for them."
He was sad, she died for him.
Yea, he didn't believe he deserved someone else to die for him.
Not that he wouldn't kill to survive, but the Family Man's morals are mysterious indeed.
She goes back to the ship and Riddick tells her "Leave them and come with me."
She says "I would die for THEM."
So when she saves his life and dies he says " NOT FOR ME! "
She was not supposed to die for his sake.

Exactly.

Still tossing out a few good options:
Isolation (2005)
Prophecy (1979)

Riddick, showing a moment of humanity says, in rage and horror: "Not for me!"
He imploring Fry, or fate, maybe even god that it wasn't supposed to be this way as she wasn't supposed to die for him.
Worse part he saw them end her you can see the look in his eyes as he watches as that makes it worse for him
I know the emergency procedures being in use and pilot studied it so hard to be a true professional... BUT you deployed head's wings which meant to stabilize you horizontally, but it also pushes nose up so hard your dead weight dump will be useless.
With Furians being so close to humans as we know them, it makes me think that humans either left Earth at some point or Earth isn't our home planet.
Furians are actually an offshoot of humanity, in the lore. And (somehow) in the like 600 years they’d been on Furya, they adapted to the super harsh environment and became almost a separate species of human
@@wholesomesunbro1 There are at least 3 seperate Human variants in the story. Standard humans, Furians, and Elementals. There are also the necro people, but it seems like you can at least turn Furians and standard humans into them. Futuristic wild west?
more likely.
It literally becomes a ripoff of Dune later on though.
@SerbianLifter997 oh, I appreciate the frontier horror aspects also but it plays out like a Robert Howard story.
I can see the Dune elements in the later movies.
None of them were as good as this first movie though.
@@Loreweavver
it...literally doesn't?
The substance, bro. Check it out. crazy science up in that beeyatch!
In Escape From Butcher Bay a surgeon Gives Riddick an “Eye Shine Job” like he says
Yes and no, he gets them after a vision from Shira while pope Joe is stitching his arm and thinks Joe did something to him so he grabs him by the neck.
The Riddick movies are such guilty pleasures for me love this 😂
Let's be honest, you're not feeling any guilt about enjoying these movies.
Oh hell yeah man! Pitch Black gets it turn on the channel! Thanks bro, looking forward to it
My interpretation of the "Not for me!" was that it was about how he was heartbroken that she sacrificed herself for him.
It's cause she said she would die for THEM, but she died for him instead
She goes back to the ship and Riddick tells her "Leave them and come with me."
She says "I would die for THEM."
So when dies saves his life and dies he says " NOT FOR ME! "
She was not supposed to die for his sake. Riddick is a good person as clearly shown by him returning to save everyone, based off of her words. Her death temporarily broke him because when the going got tough, she showed herself to also be a good person.... unlike Yellowstone.
Same
Yeah I don't know how he missed that. It was pretty obvious.
"Not for me." was like his characters turning point as the pilot/new captain said she'd give her life for the survivors and ended up dying for Riddick causing him to feel some real emotional conflict that could have sparked his less criminal behavior in the following films
So Simply. Space cats. Yes space cats. Ironically cats are essentially the most invasive species throughout the entire planet that compete with the rats.
Australia will testify to that
Escape from Butcher Bay (Game) actually has him receive said "Shine Job" and yeah, it's why he has Eyes that can see in the dark, before that he doesn't have them. Canon status for the game is questionable but Vin Diesel did reprise his role for the game.
Honestly I enjoyed the game's interpretation. It adds to Riddick's mysterious and antagonizing character when you learn what really happened vs what he tells Kira
I think the implication is that he had a recessive genus for his race, and had to get a surgeon to actually "fix" his natural abilities.
Based off of the second movie it's revealed that Riddick is part of a race of humans called Furyans that have two groups to them alphas and normal ppl, alphas have genetic mutations that allow them better to survive on the planet Furya
The Furyan we see in the second movie doesn't have it, I think the "Shine Job" only worked because he's a Furyan, not something natural to a Furyan.
@@Will_Parker There are two subclasses of Furyans ones that have the eyes shine mutations and ones that don't

I believe they say in one of the films hes a alpha furian which have those eyes but I might be wrong
those dogs were also revealed to be originally from his planet, which is why he was able to befriend them.

That's literally just not true. Furyans are their own species. Also, literally any species not on your home world could be considered an "alien"
"Offshoot of humanity" and "separate species" are not mutually exclusive.

well, Toriyama did it for Piccolo and nobody sees that retcon as bad..
