  • First look at my Cimarron 1851 Colt Navy replica by Uberti. Did a quick out of the box look-over and check out along with shooting. Very impressed with the appearance and shooting of this gun.

Consider the times these guns were used and the objective to throw more lead down range at longer distances. A battlefield is very different than plinking in our backyards at 20-30 yards.. My theory is they intended these to be zeroed around 100 yards. If these were dead on at 25 yards and you had enemy soldiers coming at you at 100+ yards, the front sight would block your target. I think I read somewhere or heard that soldiers were told to aim at enemy's belt buckle if they were at closer distances. But I must admit I was really surprised to see these things can shoot 20" high at just 25 yards...

I have a 2017 vintage Cimarron 51' navy and just aquired another one exactly like yours. I liked this gun so much I just had to have a pair! They both shoot one ragged hole at 15 yards if I swab the bore once or twice before loading, otherwise the group opens slightly like yours did. By filing slightly on the top of the hammer and playing with the v notch I got both to shoot to point of aim at the above distance. After hundreds of rounds thru both they only got better. I honestly don't understand how Uberti can make such a beautiful revolver at such a reasonable price!

I've had my Cimeron '51 for 11 years now, and love it. I also did a Kirst conversion on it as well, so I can also fire cartridges. I also have a Cimeron '60 Army that I did the conversion as well. Both revolvers are great fun to shoot with either cylinder in them! Note: I did leave the loading levers on both revolvers (no ejector rod for the cartridge cylinders), but not a big deal pushing out the empties with a separate rod.

    • @oldranger3044

I've heard that one needs a healed bullet, or one where the base expands to catch the rifling for accuracy. Any ideas or experience with that? O.R.

@@oldranger3044, Yes you're correct. I load 148gr. HBWC into .38 special cases. The cylinder is actually chambered for .38LC. Accuracy is quite good with the wadcutters as well.
The cylinder for the '60 is chambered for .45LC. I have to seat the bullets slightly deeper, as the cylinder is slightly shorter than a standard .45LC cylinder. Those loads use the standard 250gr. LRN.

After reading that 1851 Navy revolvers were usually carried in pairs, I ordered 2 Uberti 1851 Navys from MidwayUSA. They arrived a day before they were scheduled to arrive. They came in the original Uberti boxes instead of some retailer's boxes and did not include the extra literature from the retailer. I chose MidwayUSA not only because of price, but also because I was able to be sure they would come with color case hardened frames, brass grip frames and walnut grips. I have always found MidwayUSA to be one of the best suppliers. Only when they do not have what I want will I spend a little more and go to Brownell's.
Now I need to build a two gun wood box with a lid for this pair, and then a similar box for my two Ruger Wranglers. The size of the collection is increasing.

You get an official "at a boy" from me. I understand the box building plan, as I have been doing that for over 20 years. I found a source of pretty much original style brass hinges when I was in the Philippines over 20 years ago. I try to build them as close to the originals as I can, and they sure complement the nice guns the Italians are making. Good luck with the project, and thanks for the comment. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 - Thanks. A simple tip that I hope you will find helpful comes from my also being into pen turning. There are various fancy highly figured woods available that would be perfect for making boxes, fancy grips, or whatever.
While I haven't tried this yet, I have heard that the Magnum Research BFR uses the same grips as the Ruger Super Blackhawk. Therefore, I have the patterns I need to make fancy figured grips for my BFRs. One other small tip on this, do not checker the grips on hard recoiling guns. Let the gun just roll back in your hand instead of biting you.

Thanks, the shooting community today is fortunate to have available so many fine replicas of historic firearms. I try to support the manufacturers by collecting what I can afford, and passing on information and enjoyment. I would like to see US manufacturers of components like caps and powder do more to support this sport and American traditions. Not having (as far as I know at this time) a black powder manufacturing facility seems a shame for a country that historically relied heavily on its use and continues to have folks that use it. O.R.

Grips have large XP stamps on both sides. Very RARE to find consecutive serial numbered Navy's especially in a pawn shop that have never been fired and my price on them was $650 out the door. Great point about the sear engagement and rear sight height. I agree with you. It would be beneficial if Uberti and Pietta calibrated the hammer positioning for a 25 yard zero with an optimal load.
For now, I deepen the rear sight notch and lower the front sight into the deeper notch to lower bullet impact.

    • @oldranger3044

I used to grind off the top of the rear sight to create more of a patridge target picture, and usually replaced the front tapered bead with a more square one. That was when I was attempting of compete on paper. I like your approach because there is less evidence of it being modified. As long as we're wishing, maybe someone, or a company, would make a trigger with a longer tang that could be adjusted by the shooter to the proper length. Might then need to shorten the hand some. I made such a trigger, took most of a day, but it did work. It lowered the impact by probably 6-8 inches at 20 yards. Got to wonder if in the day the colt factory was more particular about this thing, which would cause them not to shoot so high. Appreciate you picking up and commenting on this detail. O.R.

Good thing lots of shooters favor plastic, if they didn’t, the demand for these would send the price higher than I could afford. Five years ago I decided to try out some 9’s. Six or seven, or more, from four manufacturers. They all went bye-bye. I would have been happy to keep a couple if they could have grouped because I invested in a couple of progressive loaders, casting, sizing, etc. Not saying that there aren’t some good ones, just not what I cared for. In my area we rarely see one or hear of one being shot. I did watch a video by Mike B. Where he fired an original and expected to shoot high but it seemed not to. On the other side, the gun at the Cody Museum that is claimed to have belonged to Wild Bill, appears to have a non standard front sight that appears to be higher than originals which would cause it to shoot lower. With conicals of course they will shoot even higher, which I believe the military used. Possibly even Bill as he was involved with them. Not being there, we rely on other evidence, sometimes it is only a guess or speculation. O.R.

So, I just looked down the barrel again and it didn't appear earlier one quite as fast as one I have that is a bit older. This new one looked like it turned a little more than 1/3 and I expected almost 1/2 like my older one. Measured it and I come up with about 1-20, so is it possible they changed again from the 1-16 to the 1-20. Actually that according to one fellow I read in a forum, 1-20 would be pretty ideal. So it is a faster twist than the 1-30 that was used. Hope this is not too confusing. O.R.

I wish there was. Good news is that as far as I know they are still making them but it isn’t a high priority for the company. I have seen some #11’s in some local shops, and they can work in “with” a pinch. There is the danger that a loose cap could increase chances for a chain fire so be aware of that. Sorry I can’t be of much help here. O.R.

@@Doriamo yes, and if you check my channel I believe I have a video or two on them, except I have the tap-o-cap which was made by forester and is discontinued. For revolvers I think the #10 is the size, but should check with mfg to see what they recommend. Since I had a tool for producing the caps, I only ordered the prime all powders. Plenty of bang for your bucks, and enough to make lots of caps. Follow instructions. I have tried copper, but have had better luck with the Al cans using my forester. I have fun making stuff, and $50 won’t buy many caps for revolver shooting, if you can find any. A word of caution because I had a chain fire that might have been due to sloppy powder placement inside the cap that acted like a fuse and the flame from the adjacent chamber set it off. That hasn’t stopped me, but was more finicky on the 20 I made last night. O.R.

Probably the same as far as accuracy. 61 had some improvements such as loading lever, round barrel, and elongated front sight. Some say the 51 has a better feel, but I haven’t noticed much. More 51’s were made (I believe), and seem more desirable maybe due to the octagonal barrel and their use in a couple of well liked westerns. I don’t think a person can go wrong with either. My first was a Replica Arms (early Uberti I believe), 1861. Saw in their catalog “Fastest of the fast “, and had to have it. O.R.

Do you have an opinion on brass frame or steel frame. Preference I mean

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 роки тому +1

Don't have much experience with brass frames. I plan to get more, as I just received a few from EMF. My guess would be that they can shoot as accurate as the steel, but may loosen up sooner, especially with strong loads in round or conicals. They are not recommended if one is planning on a cylinder to shoot cartridges. With proper care, I can see them lasting longer than most shooters will. Most shooters; there are always exceptions of course. Especially now unless someone has laid up 10-20 K of caps and enough powder. For equal money, I would choose the steel, but with brass at lower cost, it sort of evens the playing field. Don't be afraid of the brass thinking it is a "cheap" option. They have the same cylinder and barrel as the steel. I suppose I lean more toward the steel, probably because that is how most, if not all of the original colts and rem's were. O.R.

    • @oldranger3044

If you buy the Confederate model, then there’s only the brass option for frame, the colt navy has both options. Brass frame guns are less$, but possibly weaker than steel frames. The Confederate is for someone who wants a replica more like the gun built in the south and used by Southern troops in the Civil War. I have never heard that there is any shooting difference between the brass frame guns. Historically there were no brass frame Navy Colts made as far as I know. So, in shooting, little or no difference, only a matter of which one you like the looks of. Oh, sometimes the Confederates cost more or are harder to find. Hope this helps some. O.R.
