Is the 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 The Perfect Sports Car? (Well, There Is The Price…)

  • Porsche put it’s much loved flat-6 engine back into the 718, but it only came as the GT4, packaged strongly for the track. Want that smoothness, punchiness, and throaty engine note with a dollop of comfort and civility? That would be the GTS 4.0. Available in both 718 Boxster and Cayman models, it gives up nothing for drivers that want a good romp on a country backroad. Tom Voelk tests a well optioned Boxster that retails for $117K. You didn’t think it would be inexpensive did you?

In a parallel universe, Tom Voelk is getting all the accolades and appreciation he deserves. Such a shame that he doesn't have atleast a million subs. It makes me doubt the path of hardwork and dedication. You are one of the best Tom, keep going, maybe forever. Good luck.

Great vid, thank you. I LOVE Seattle, I have cousins who live in Everett. I do feel that the 2.5 gets a bad press though, I’ll grant you that, OK, the sound isn’t quite as good as the 4.0 (but with an aftermarket exhaust nobody really knows) plus the performance is better. In addition, with Porsche (and virtually every other manufacturer these days) fitting soft limiters, who cares about the noise really anyway. People don’t mention that aspect when they talk about the Taycan. 😉I own the 2.5 and I can tell you it’s a FANTASTIC car.
Keep up the great vids and thanks from the UK.

I will always remember the simply amazing comercial Porsche had in a French newspaper many many years ago. It just said: 90KPH to 0 in 2.9 seconds. This is just the best muscle car advert EVER! You know you buy a beast, but the car maker reassures the driver that HE IS in control.
You seem to have had a blast on this test drive. With many features that seem to be your all time favorites.

Great review as always Tom. Love this Porsche. Makes about as much sense as a big garage of Miatas. I just need one thank you. Yes Porsche cost allot but that is what it is to be the best. The best cost allot. The Panasonic is an excellent choice. Since you grade all of your video I suppose the color science from the FS7 to your UX180 is not a big deal. The Panasonic is quite a bit smaller too. I am looking closely at the Panasonic too. These cameras are rather spendy so you better get paid what you do if you sign for an FS7 or UX180. Professional results with professional gear. Sounds right. Nice work Tom!

Manual with carrera wheels. For 12 years. Replaced with the same model but with PDK a 2016. If I didn’t want to retire early, the GTS sounds perfect. But I won’t even test drive anything more powerful as I wouldn’t want to regret not “going for it” as I know I couldn’t resist not buying the more exciting version. I’ve said NO when a friend asked me if I’d like to drive his carrera 4s.

getting the expensive carbon ceramic brake option on the Boxter seems silly.. CCB's really only show their strength with repeated HARD stops in a track environment, and let's face it, the sort that would drive in that type of environment would more likely get the Cayman over the Boxter.

Love your reviews. When's the 2021 Acura TLX A spec going to get your review. Picked mine up on the first day on sale 9-28-2020. I got black on black with SH AWD. My 65th birthday presents. A year early. I love it. Keep up the great work. 👍

idk sounds almost the same as 2.5 l turbo, also why havent porsche increased the torque its the same as 2.5 turbo? performance is on par..every video i have watched the presenter talks about the turbo sound blah, blah , its not the 6 cyl sounds awsome , and i think you comment on that as well ... what about performance and drivability where you have to rev the engine to get full torque ? i dont know the sound is more of a thing about engine size in peoples head that it went from 6 to 4 cyl , just my opinion, i drove a 2015 gts 4 years ago i didnt like the torque curve it felt anemic, i drove a base 718 and was impressed and ended up getting 718 gts.. good review though

I have a 2022 Boxster GTS on order, Do you know if there are any changes vs, the car you are showing? I chose the me wheels, the PDK, 18 way heated and cooled seats but no Carbon brakes. Mine specked out at $117, 460 with Carmine Red and Chalk white leather seats.

Porsche needs to replace the external plastic scoops and trims with metal or carbon fiber....even the 911 Turbo S has too much external plastic. Just doesn’t fit the character of the cars of this caliber....
