2020 Porsche Cayman GT4. The 718 Gets Its Six Back! (Does It Sound Good?).

  • Enthusiasts asked. Porsche delivered. The potent 718 Cayman and Boxter are once again available with a naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine. Sounds like a winner! First up is the track biased 718 GT4 with 414 horsepower (sun worshipers will want the 718 Spyder convertible). The GTS 4.0 that’s slightly detuned and comfortable is coming soon. Tom Voelk zooms the GT4 up and down the backroads of the Pacific Northwest and finds it to be a heroic handler that will have big brother 911 looking over its shoulder.

    Love the GT4, but I'm most excited about the upcoming GTS 4.0...same engine with more grownup styling and more comfort. It could have been called the GT4 touring.
    Also, I find it downright insulting that Porsche STILL refuses to offer Android Auto, which is inexcusable. I guess it's a good thing the engine sounds so damn good.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  4 роки тому +7

      Agreed. My Cayman would be for long distance road tripping and the GT4 would be too much for my ears and bum. The vast majority of Porsche owners are iOS people and many of the automakers don't like the access to data that Google wants. That's a small ting considering the car.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 4 роки тому +2

      @@DrivenCarReviews Totally agree that the GT4 is best suited for track duty, not the kind of country road touring that I like to do. However, I don't agree concerning Android Auto. Having user friendly access to my media files and streaming for long drives is very important to my driving experience and it is definitely not something I should have to give up at this price point when every other brand offers it. I am also not convinced it has much to do with data sharing either. Apple is certainly not the altruistic, cuddly corporation that many people believe it is. They share user data just like all the rest, so that may be a distinction without much difference.

    It's an amazing car. However, while many may not take a base C8 over it, I bet A LOT more will take the upcoming C8 Z06 over it. The interior of the C8 is now to Euro standards in the highest trim levels, the Z06 will have a flat plank screaming V-8 and 600HP. Some snuff GM for the name plate, but GM has nailed chassis dynamics, suspension tuning, advanced stability/traction control systems, and advanced E-diff. for quite some time now. I have the lowly 2SS 1LE Camaro and it absolutely kills my previous F80 M3. I suspect after the hype dies down, you will see the C8 selling at 10% off MSRP, as always happens. The C8 Z06 will be a game changer for some of the expensive Euro counterparts.

    The GT4 has been a 6-cylinder engine since it first came out...... the "Cayman GTS" had a 4 cylinder turbo engine before.

    Possibly Porsche's best and most focused Porsche? At least until arrival of the next generation of my dream Porsche: the GT3 with Touring Package. By the way, I swooned at the steering wheel THAT WAS BUTTON-FREE!

    Great video of an awesome car, but I know that the for me the GTS would be more than enough. Was checking the back catalogue trying to see if Tom reviewed the regular 4 cyl 718.......they are cheap used, if you can get past the engine sound.

    981 GT4 sounds way better and was a limited production. Car dealers have issues to sell the current gt4 production.

    So, the 3.8 liter flat 6 on the 911 Carrera S makes 430 hp and 325 lb-ft torque but the new *4.0* liter flat 6 on the 718 Cayman only makes 414 hp and 309 lb-ft torque?

    • @Maximumrandom69
      @Maximumrandom69 4 роки тому

      Not true. The 991.1 Carrera S had 400 hp (ps). This has 420 hp (ps). The 991.1 Carrera GTS had 430 hp (ps). Get your information right

    • @tropicalstorm339
      @tropicalstorm339 4 роки тому

      @@Maximumrandom69 If you want to be technical about, then fine. I stand corrected. However, the Carrera S (with the 3.8 liter flat six) still made 325 lb-ft torque, which is higher than the *new* and bigger *4.0* liter flat six in the 718 Cayman with its 309 lb-ft torque. If Porsche enlarged the Carrera S 3.8 engine to 4.0 and kept everything else, it would have made more than the 414 hp that the 4.0 liter in the Cayman and it will make even more than the 325 lb-ft torque that it already has. You happy now cowboy?
