The Boxster 25 Years is, on the surface, a highly optioned up 4.0 GTS model with a lot of additional options. But it's actually more than that. I drove my first Porsche a few months ago at the Porsche race school in Alabama. The first drill we did was in a Boxter which I've always kind of "poopooed" as a poor man's Porsche. I have never been so wrong about something in my entire life.
I drove the 1st gen boxster back in the day, and was blown away with how well it did everything. Anytime I hear somebody shit on the boxster, I can pretty much guarantee they never drove one.
So true. Plus the irony is that if you’re “poor” you probably don’t own a Porsche to begin with!
The boxster is the best kept secret amongst enthusiasts who don't give a shit about heritage or image. Porsche obviously needed people to think that since it's inherently better than the 911.
It’s a tremendously good platform. My first Porsche I got to “wring out “ was a 2014 Cayman in Nevada in the Canyons. Sure the base motor wasn’t “quick” up at elevation (my SAAB is quicker from a roll in a straight line) but it was a joy revving it out and learning the balance. The more you pushed and learn how it rotates the better it got. The platform can handle a TON of power but the base Caymans and Boxters on the street are extra rewarding to drive.
The real poor man's Porsche is the 86/BRZ. How do I know? Because I really want a Cayman, but this is all I could afford lol.
Boxter to 60 in less than 4 seconds and a high 11 quarter... we are truly in good times for power.
Yet, they will pale in comparison the EVs. Esp sports EV that are on the way

@@solocamo3654 don't get so defensive. At the moment the model 3 long range does it all but I agree, it's not fun to drive its there to be a low fatigue A to B machine, low effort.
A lightweight ICE is the other end of the spectrum, A110. If not the lotus emira/boxster.
The big heavy cars are being taken over by EV.
I'm looking forward to the hybrid sports.
Apline and Lotus are coming together to make a sports EV.
The only thing missing is the sound, soon a louder slower sport cars be even more obnoxious, just shouting for attention.

I have a gts4.0 and I am coming from a 17 M2. LOVE THE GTS4.0. One of the most versatile daily cars. 100% satisfied.
How did you configure your interior? Wondering if the leather/gts interior packages are necessary or if the standard interior with race tex is sufficient.
THE GTS is one of the few cars that will make a m2 feel like an economy car
@@jasonlee3327 I have the base seats, but ventilated which is kinda a cheap way to get nice seats. So that is the way I went, but personal preference is up to you. The gts package I think puts some leather/race tec on the dash which is something that I somewhat desire.
It comes standard with that awesome intake sound so no matter what you win.
@@jasonlee3327 Also if you are specing one now I would get that high gloss exterior trim. The plastic on the rear defuser is a bit meh.
@@thehumanoid6543 I see what you are saying but the m2 has a very different personality. The M2 is a rough naughty fun car, kinda like a puppy running on a beach saying let’s play! cmon let’s play. Throw the stick, pass that car, cmon you can do it. While the 718 is like a serious near flawless flat corning speed machine that surprises you each time you look at your speed. It is a classy car that feels well thought out at high g/speed but also equally well thought out while driving in traffic. Both of them are sexy to look at. I love them both.
Absolutely love this car. The wheels are a total throwback to the Hamann HM5s from the 90s - love 'em!
I have to say that Matt is the most gentlemanly youtuber. I find that he is always willing to engage with fans of the channel and treats all with respect even when they disagree with his views.

Boxster, cayman and F type in my opinion are the best "affordable " sports cars you can buy.
I recently picked up a manual 987 Cayman that I am daily driving until there is salt on the ground. So far apart from the water pump (which is the most common issue) it's been great!
I still have my convertible Cappuccino for top down weather if I need, and have a FiST for winter/rainy driving.

and used aluminum suspension parts since the oughts
there maybe a long list of things you might fear eventually breaking but i can assure you

Curious how this stacks up against the Boxster Spyder from a few years back. I still think the Spyder is one of the most beautiful Porsche cars they've built.
As a 718 Spyder owner, I can tell you that this should be a much better daily. The Spyder is a little too stiff.
It’s weird to think of a Boxster costing $100k. But when you consider the 4 liter and other upgrades I guess it makes sense. Kind of
I had an option to buy order one at the spec changeable stage but my dealer caught me off guard with it, I wasn’t thinking of changing cars at the time. However, it got me thinking so I rang him back 2 days later and of course the slot had gone. Absolutely devastating and I’ve regretted it ever since. It would have arrived in around 2 weeks time. Absolutely love it, mine would have been black/red/red. 🖤 ♥️ ♥️ great vid guys, thank you.
I have the 718 GT4 which is a nice car driven at legal speed and a great car at illegal speeds. Bringing back the flat-6 to the platform was a must-have for enthusiasts. Overall, I love the cabin of the 718 (plenty of space for large people) and the new 25 rounds off all the edges with balance between luxury and sport. If you are in the market for a 2-seater, you have to test drive this car.
The Boxster just continues to be loved; it has that irresistable thing that never goes away. It's testament is how little it has changed since the 986; there was so little to improve (ignore the cup holders). For daily driving at enthusiast standards, it does everything perfectly, and as a package. There is nothing to dislike, save for no back seats (ever). To celebrate the anniversary and add a little specific nostalgia, they should have revived the fried eggs. It's the car that loves you back.
GTS 4.0 models come standard with Sport Chrono and adaptive dampers (just correcting what was implied in the video)
I had a 986 Boxster 2.5L original one, sold it to buy a 911.. Biggest mistake I ever made car wise, the Boxster is very underrated. Fantastic chassis and great sports car, all eras.
Boxster is the only convertible I would even think about buying, this one is perfect, great video too.
This makes me miss my dads 5 speed 2006 boxster that was blue on the brown/tan color. It wasn’t the classic bmw style light tan more like their cinnamon color. It had the 19” wheel package as well, just such a clean car for a 2006.

Deliberated between 718 Spyder or GTS 4.0. Got lucky and got my hands on a brand new 25th Anniversary Edition (GT Silver with black interior) in MT which makes it even more rare. As a owner of a dedicated track car and a M car, the Boxster 25 is the “jam” 😜.

Love it, the Boxster is my favorite platform. I agree about the wheels though.
They look great at dusk, which is the best time to drive a convertible. Not surprising, Porsche seemed to put alot of properly shaded shots in the press stuff.
They look way better in person than in the video.
When I'm done with the modifications to my manual 992 GT3 Touring, I bet that will be a better daily driver.
Here's what's currently being done to my GT3 Touring.
Complete sound deadening w. Dynaudio Esotor and Zapco Audio install.
Rear seat install w. Elfermotors 992 GT rear seat installation kit.
KW springs w. 25% softer rate and 10 mm increase in ride height.
Autoquest 4.62 Final drive ratio.
0.81 ratio 6th gear out of the GT4 as cruise gear.
It will be an actual GT3 Touring.
They do the intake sound in the interior since the 911 991.1 and do it in every modell and its amazing and doesnt seem to be fake to me❤️

Great video as always guys. Would love to see a review of the Audi TTRS as this always seems to go under the radar but for everyday performance for the money, certainly gives the Boxster/Cayman a challenge and sounds absolutely amazing. Obviously the ultimate handling won’t be quite as good but as an everyday quality performance car, it’s amazing (I have one 😊)
Love the color combo on this beauty but I really wish Porsche had kept the original tailpipe configuration rather than dual exhausts, especially since it’s a nod to the original. I have a well appointed 981 Boxster S in a unique color and as good as this one is, I’d have a hard time parting with it for this one. All Boxsters are wonderfully balanced driving machines!
This car is a 2 speed manual on litterally every road in north america. Quite sad to be honest

@@AndrewReilly Loved the way it looked, wanted some of the comforts (like ventilated seats) and wanted a retractable roof (so i can drive somewhere and put the top up quickly and park). Also putting the top up and down while driving, another plus. Its just a trim on a GTS 4.0, but a GTS 4.0 has creature comforts that allow me to use it more than i would a Spyder. On the road, the performance difference is negligible.

I want a 718 Cayman with the 3.0T engine, not stoked to 4.0 and NA but with the turbos still on. Would be the best car anyone sells period.
I have had a Cayman T for about a year now. All the negative press it gets is totally wrong. Even the sound which I am now used to is great. Much better car than my old 987.
Spyder is still more special. It just looks stunning. If only it had the old 981 engine's sound track but kept the current power, it would be a classic even with unlimited allocation (which is realistically limited anyways due to shortage + Porsche never ever producing enough anyways so it's practically always at shortage lol)

Matt, does it sound better than a GTS 4.0 in your opinion (even though the drivetrain is the same)? Some other reviewers said it somehow had a better engine and induction sound than the GTS 4.0, and I also checked the exhaust on mine, and it was a Remus exhaust as standard based on the etching on it.

It’s lovely but it’s not worth a 130k more than my second hand 987. Nicer interior sure but power that the Aussie police take great lengths to stop you from using. Otherwise the car is largely the same but that’s largely because they did a good job in the first place!
Sorry guys I don't believe that the gearing is truly related to the emissions and the noise regulations. That's just an excuse that Porsche is using to cut costs and not give the car properly geared to gearbox that doesn't have 2nd gear at 84 and 3rd gear at 113 mph. Just look at the BMW M2 series of cars and the great gearing that they put into the manual transmission there. You get to enjoy the pleasure of shifting every 30 to 40 mph. Thank you BMW for doing it right that's the reason that the BMW M2 CS is so fun to drive along with the others in the family that have a manual.
Never heard before that the valve train of the GT4 is actually different and so you can’t open the revs up to 8000rpm via software. Is this just a rumour or actual fact?
this is actual fact. confirmed with Rick Deman (who turns the 4.0 into a 4.5 and said you need the Spyder/ GT4 engine for the conversion; the GTS engine won't make the power because of this)

That induction noise at high load, lower rpm is fap worthy af. Reminds me of an na skyline with 3.0 engine and large intake pipe with pod filter. Same load conditions, it had that deep timber growl thing going. It was really well captured in this video and I don't recall it being so noticeable in other porsche videos. Seems like the mechanical amplification works wonders.
How does this compare with other 4.0s such as the GTS 4.0 or GT4?

There's never been a Boxster with a 4.0 in it before though. The turbo Boxster's are quite a lot cheaper.

I'm never one to complain about car prices, because that is so lame, but in this case.. man that seems like overpaying for something that isn't gonna keep like a 911 or Cayman. Maybe I'm wrong, but these things used to be around $35K, and not long ago! 65K for a few hundred extra horsepower? Maybe, but not on a Boxter.

Not really the 'sweet spot' in the traditional sense. It's at the extreme end of the Cayman/Boxster spectrum focused far far more on track days rather than commute days.
Something like this Boxster 25 is a lot closer to the sweet spot for all around goodness under nearly all conditions.
The more extreme the better 😍, in my opinion obviously . I’ve had numerous Boxsters including a Spyder but the GT4 is something else, and that’s coming from someone who daily’s a 718 GT4 Manual. And yes it has been Tracked 🏎🔥

You don't need to manually disengage the parking brake on the 718s. Just put it into first gear and go.
