- Praise be, the regular Porsche 718 Cayman and Porsche 718 Boxster with a six-cylinder engine are back.
When Porsche moved its 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster to four-cylinder turbocharged engines, a good old-fashioned flat six engine was reserved for the limited edition Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder. Well, not any more.
This is the 2020 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS, and they are fitted with a naturally-aspirated, 4.0-litre flat six engine that recently appeared in the Cayman GT4.
With 394bhp (400hp), the pair make 20hp less than a Cayman GT4. But both still have a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds and have a top speed of 182mph. The Cayman GTS costs from £64,088 and the Boxster GTS is priced from £65,949.
Here we've tested them on both road and track. Find out what we think of Porsche's new, naturally aspirated mid-engined sports cars.

Damnit, it's been years since I've felt this feeling in my bones...this feeling that I MUST have some Porsche I can't afford. For years I've just not been that in love with what they've been doing to feel that way. But it's back...
U can always buy a good used car , old naturally aspirates Cayman and boxter are not very expensive.
Or sell your kids and house 😂
@@rishabhbhatt1393 used ones are not that expensive for a reason ( replacement parts and labor to take out the engine)
@@saulespino2510 , maintain such a premium car is always going to be expensive , it's a Porsche so parts can't come cheap.
Just do it dude. Even if it's only for a year or two. Then take the hit and sell it (if you can let it go) and you'll be living the dream before the grim reaper arrives. I did it and I don't regret it one tiny bit :)
I'd rather have either one of these over a C8. Both are absolutely amazing. I need to get one of these in my garage before my days are over.
I'm debating a C8 Z06 or 718 GTS 4.0 or 997.2 Turbo S PDK. The build quality of the Vette has me wondering. My 16 ATSV Sedan just doesn't have the same QC. My 15 Golf R was solid, never an issue.
But the value for performance out of the C8 Stingray is amazing! 2.8 zero to 60. 500hp & 470TQ , PDR, nose lift, & I can take the roof off too
@Boywonderr71 One more thing to consider: weight. C8 is about 3600 lbs with GTS 4.0 at around 3200 lbs. If you drive on streets, these 400 lbs won’t make much of a difference. On track, especially corners, you’ll feel every extra pound.
Could i just say how good the audio and visual is during JD's pieces to camera in the Boxster GTS. Absolutely immaculate...:::)))
A GT4 with real interior door handles and no crazy spoiler? I might be visiting my local Porsche dealer next year!
golfbuddy1969 I like the door straps
Vorname. Nachname. I understand that they’re pretty cool. I’m a germ freak and wash my hands like more than 2 dozen times per day. But as clean as my hands always are, I can only imagine of having soot unknowingly on my hands and forever staining them. Also think about hand oils that would build up after years.
Personally I like the spoiler but then again I am only 18 😂
K L that’s about the nicest way I’ve been told that I was old...good form!
golfbuddy1969 what must be nice is being able to look at a nice car, look at your budget and not have to spend hours on car insurance comparison sites fiddling with the parameters to get it down from impossible prices to just ridiculous. That’s the main reason young people can’t wait to be older. Being older has its perks 😂
Great review... love Boxsters so yes, in my eyes the perfect sportscar too!
I am so glad that Porsche is doing as I thought they would do. Making cars so people buy them and drive them leaving the GT models for those who are going to take it to the track, as opposed to those who buy them, sit on them, speculate on their price increases and then flip them.
Cracking video guys! Great move to bring the 6 back to this duo.
Oh man, I'm going to be broke here in a minute
I foresee A LOT of 718s with the 4 cylinders going for a very attractive price tag. Pick up a 2017 BMW M4C or a 2018 4 banger GTS for around the same $45-50K?
I m already saving for this one.
@@Peanutdenver yeah, because nobody wants one - including me!!!
Porsche is quite genius. They kill off the six cylinder GTS and make it a four cylinder for the same price. Then they are revered as hero's when they bring th NA 6 cylinder back and charge way more for it. The Porsche way
Extra price will at least partly be to cover the fines for any extra c02.
Same as VW have increased the price on the UP GTI by almost exactly the same amount that the emissions fine per unit has increased (in the UK at least)
with ultra long gear ratios, you will always drive in second gear you novice ! (140km/h) Oh you will use third gear ? really ? oh you impress me to short shift a 400 hp sports car at 3000 rpm novice ! porsche genius ? you ill. 190km/h at redline in third gear novice. jail if cops see you.
Heroes.
In South Africa this cost less than the 4 cylinder . Very strange I know.
Prices go up year after year. Is this earth shattering? Is this just a Porsche phenomenon?
I'd take this over the 718 GT4 in a heartbeat just to be able to build it more to my liking.
Totally agree, I was considering GT4 but too much like a track car. GTS 4.0 is perfect in between car, somewhere in the middle of GT4 and Boxster S. Plan on ordering one this week. Dealer is telling me delivery in March 2021!
What’s the difference between cayman gts, cayman T and cayman s. Apparently the s is faster than the gts due to the gts being older
Agree as well. :)
Great review, I’m currently number 2 on the list for the GTS 4.0 manual here in Pa…can’t wait.
Great review, James and the Autocar team! Boxster GTS 4.0 is the perfect sports car
Exactly, it's the perfect sportscar (for the real world).
Did he mention the noise?
😂😂
He did!
Yes, but we couldn't hear it, because he kept talking over it
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think he missed it
Came here for the cars fell in love with the intro music LAWD!!
Excellent video
This dude is having way too much fun damn it!
The Cayman is gonna go from being Porsche’s worst selling model to best this year
Johnny Mugnano LOL, no it won’t. Still too close to 911 money.
@@MotoJB The Cayman is closer to the spirit of the original 911 than the modern 911 is now. The 911 is bigger, wider, heavier and the engine is in the wrong place for a race car. Yes, Porsche still gives the most love to the 911 models, and rightly so. But in this case "second best" really isn't that far behind and might even be more fun to drive.
Joe Shmoe I own both so I clearly understand. With that said, for close to the same money, I’d take a 911 over the current Cayman offerings any day. Not that worried about “race car” level weight distribution for a street car either. Lastly, my 991 Turbo S will turn faster lap times than the Cayman at any track. until they start putting 500-600 ponies in a mid engine design, the Cayman will still and always be 2nd fiddle to the 911.
@@MotoJB I have a 981 GTS, so I'm not ignorant about this either. And I've driven several 911s and I prefer the Cayman. I put my money where my mouth is. Cheers! They are both awesome cars.
Joe Shmoe ...and some people prefer a Supra. All relative and subjective. With that said I admitted that power being closer to the same, the Cayman becomes a whole different position in the Porsche lineup and the preferred car. There is a reason why they are not putting 911 power in the Cayman. They don’t want to decimate the 911 flagship positioning or sales. Eventually they will have to relent though. They can’t keep engineering around the 911 “problem”. Cheers. I too love our 981s. Brombacher exhaust, tuned. It sounds glorious and is such a well balanced, handling car.
1 Cayman GTS for me please, love it.
Porsche has nailed it with the GT4 and now the GTS 👌🏻
There will definitely be a Cayman GTS 4.0 in my future. This is literally the exact car I wanted Porsche to build, it's basically a 'GT4 Touring' and I'm surprised they didn't call it that. I know it's not due out until next year, but I hope they get the configurator online soon.
This is gonna be big seller. This will be a great autocross car to drive to and from the event.
Can't wait to hear an Akrapoviç exhaust on one of these
What a lovely car 😍
To sum it up : Lovely !
Omg...a manufacturer actually listened to the public and went opposite to regulatory trends??? I will be visiting my local Porsche dealer very soon
CapnT Did they listen or just watch with disappointment people buying the TTRS purely because of the noise?
Largeone1968 haha possibly that too! That 5-cyl TTRS sounds nearly like the R8’s V10. The TT would monster the GTS in a straight line...and it can be driven in the snow...hmm, maybe I should head to Audi.
@@CapnT87 them you would lose RWD with a center engine, and a better (never drove though) chassis. LOL. Hard choice indeed.
Aren't these limited to certain buyers anyway ?
CapnT ...a modified Golf with a great engine compared to a through and through mid-engined, manually shifted n/a drivers car. Are you serious?🙄😆😂
What an engine! Would’ve liked to see sportier fascia design to distinguish from standard 718, just as it was done with 981.
That green spider in Arrabida is a dream
Good Review
Nice car bro!
Ok there, BR0 😏😒
Took Porsche a while to realize that 4 banger was a bad idea. Imagine beeing the shmuck that just bought 4 cylinder GTS a few months ago, I'd be so mad.
It doesn't took porsche a while. You can't put a bigger engine in the car without redoing the car. It does take some time to make a new car. From the Desk of the designer to the real car it takes over 3 Years...
@Malcolm R Monaghan But still, it wasn't made to fit a flat 6. And Porsche was waiting for the reaction of the customers. I think a flat 6 Version was in work right After the lounch of the 718.
@AustinSBL306 Yeah the GT4 is how old? Some months? And how long is the 4 cyl. 718 in the market?
The development of the GT4 and the face lifted 718 started over 2 years ago. Why? Designers have to do their work, engineers have to work on the chassie cause a Turbo 2.5 is diffrent to a 4.0... New balancing, and tuning is needed. New Tools for making the bodywork have to be made. The car has to be tested and aproved by the TÜV. It takes some time guys. I work in this industry...
The First Gen Panamera came out and they started to work on the 2. Gen. Thats why car brands make these crazy Concepts... They show what will happen in the next years.
Amazing👍👍👍
Love this car! And the front end isn't going to scrape on every curb and dip like a GT4.
With Porsche using extra CC and cylinders...what's not to like?
Nice...I still think the 981 flat 6 sounds better.
blame the particulate filters..
Yes, and I'm glad it does :)
Blame the tyranny of the European EPA more like. lucky Australia and the US wont be having that nonsense.
@@Bombast-A-Blasta yeah sure - "tyranny" like protecting nature - sure! LOL EPA is US and not European. The harshest rules are from California, means yes the US have this "nonsense" what California does the country follows. Australia, well.... they have their own fire problems, don't they.
- but - can we agree it's a wonderful car and engine?
i have the 2016 gts, love the sound from that engine, even my Porsche friends think its the best. wow did they drop the ball when they dropped the 3.4
Yes iv brought the boxter gts amazing car
Is the cayman available with a pdk transmission?
Great review, a bit hard to watch with all the difference in saturation between the shots, we all love the M&M colours of the cars but I dont even know which green is the natural one anymore.
the beauty, power, sound and price = Porsche.
The green is really a nice color. I bought a Yellow 981 Boxster and its like the Hollywood Red Carpet every day i drive it.
Awesome car, even as a 718 2017 Boxster owner I'd love this as a cheaper alternative to a current gen 9/11, hopefully they start making the PDK sooner rather than later.
My dreamcar
Sweet!!
Right but how does it sound?
That green paint tho!!!!!!!
I was a Michelin Cup 2 once
Leigh Taylor then the cup 2 R came around 😟
What's the weight increase due to the new bigger engine?
Very nice review indeed! But if we think about this, if new 4.0 NA6C engine is a "Baby GT3", then the old 2.5L 4C engine, would be a "Baby GT2RS"! Right? So, it really just come down, to whether you like GT3's high RPM, or GT2RS's performance and everyday usability. After all, they are all great cars. What do you think?
My dream car...
I wonder if they will build it with PDK?
Is there a PDK transmission available?
Which one as a daily? Pick one
Please? Thanks.
Awesome porsche
I wonder if the sales figures on the 4 pots have fallen?
I love the Porsche Boxter gts
Is the Boxster GTS' roof powered? As the Boxster Spyder version you had to manual do.
yes its electronic. way better buy then the gt4 i'd say
@@Palladium65 Agreed. Main drawback to me on the GT4 Spyder version for me. Having to stop and manually do that if it starts pouring lol. Plus the price. 2016s still too high as it is.
Amazing reading the comments. You would think Porsche had dumped the T4 motor, but fact is the majority of 718s sold will continue to have the T4 motor. By all means spend $20K - $30K more to have the NA6 for a slower car that sounds better.
718 GTS 4 cyl owners for sure are furious right now with Porsche
Bong Lim not at all. This 4.0 is considerably slower than the 2.5 turbo. Some of us care about performance more than sound. If you’ve never heard a turbo 2.5 GTS you have no idea how good it sounds at rpm btw.
I’ll wait for the PDK option.
I wish they'd shorten the gear ratios a bit. Those long gears have always made the car feel a lot slower than it is.
I'd still taking the four cylinder turbo. It can get over 400whp with a tune and is about 100 pounds lighter. It's the faster car in a straight line and around the track
really wonder what they are going to do with new GT4 and GT3.....
sell them for a massive profit? They are motorsport division cars, this is a hum drum Boxter.
They NEVER should have put 4 cylinder engines in the 718s. Good to see them correcting their mistake.
I was looking to buy a house this year. I'm seriously reconsidering.....
My friend bought a 718 s and having never been in a porsche i was really sad to hear a tinny almost diesel noise with auto shift noise ...grr the old flat 6 and this gts so much better
Something about the Porsche engineering that creates the perfect sorts car that none can match at the price point.. Other premium brands are either deficient in steering, sound, involvement, auto only transmissions..
I would love to have any six cylinders Porsche with manual transmission. Those are more affordable than 911s and more daily drivable too!
Winnie the Pooh loves the new Boxster and Cayman. 10:01
Cayman went back to Flat_6!!? No way
We were starting to get used to the Turbo4..
$90,000 in the U!S. That’s without options! High priced for me. But undoubtedly a great car. The base 4 cylinder is $30,000 less. Is the sound worth the difference. The other performance upgrades in the GTS. make little difference for the average driver. I guess a base Boxster with the four is still the Best Buy for most of us.
Got to love the new ‘Pawsh’. FFS
Today I started saving.
So this will make 981 GTS prices to drop? Awesome.
Doubt it.
The market is saturated with low mileage 981 GTS's already. They will drop because they are overpriced. This new 718 GTS will suffer the same issue of Porsche promising 'free' motoring based on resale but next to no miles on the car.
ATEOTD, for a lot of Porsche owners, telling people you have one is the majority of the experience.
It’s £65k with no options. Nobody is going to be paying £65k for one of these. To get it where it needs to be (like the cars in this video) you’re looking at adding £12k, so £77k
GTS is the top spec. It has every option extra
That cayman looks like it's on the carbon brakes, not the steels as he said.....hmmm??
"The balance is the same" - Wrong
"The steering is the same" - Probably wrong
"The suspension is the same" - Definitely wrong
The 718 GTS is awesome, but a GT4 it is not. The GT4 has a significantly sharper GT3-derived suspension, a more aggressive wheel and tire set up, bigger brakes, more downforce, and more power.
Unfortunately all Cayman 4.0 are sold out in 2020 and early 2021.
two things:
1.4.0L straight 6, is that engine also used in 911 gt3??cayman gt4 i know about that.
2.cayman and boxster were always similar just like comparing coupe with convertible of same model.
thats it.
Dhruv Singh Pal this 4L is NOT the same engine in gt3. Much less visceral. This engine is bored out 911 engine w turbos taken off.
But how do they sound?
Anthony like crap
Is this really a motorsport engine ???
It doesnt rev to 9k or have all the trick bits etc.
Isnt it effectively a 3.0 turbo engine bored to 4.0 with turbos removed and tuned appropriately ?
Very nice and all that and I salute them for making it but its not a genuine Porsche motorsport/gt engine.
Correct, it’s based on the 9A2 (the 3.0 turbo) - so yes, it’s not a motorsport engine as claimed by the presenter.
I really hope the GT3 and not just the GT3 RS as the homologation model retains the motorsport 4.0 engine.
Your right, this reviewer did not get the facts correct
@@danny200mph5 he failed to mention that it hasn't got the GT3 based suspension setup either
The 992 GT3 is going to have the same 4.0L flat-6 of the 991 Speedster (which has particle filters) but with the HP bumped to around 530+.
@@HG504X which is NOT this engine
Good! Porsche has fixed the Cayman! Now do the right thing and put the GT3 engine into the GT4 then you will finally do the Cayman justice!
If you think this handles like the gt4 then you’re out of your mind. Can’t take a reviewer seriously when he think a set of
P Zero’s grips like the cup 2’s on track. Thinks the gt4 suspension set up is a slight difference to the gts? Can’t feel the aero difference? Then you’ve not driven the cars fast enough. If you’re just putting around, then a boxster s would feel not so different then a gt3 rs. Please get a reviewer that actually reviews the cars for their attributes and not how they sound the same going the speed limit...
Agreed
The motorsport department has not developed the engine, not on the GT4/spyder or the GTS.
this car is sexier than the 911.
GT4 Lite (heavier)
The GTS are not value buys over the GT4/Spyder simply because....those things will have higher resale from collectibility. Simply see what prices the previous gen are commanding to get a perspective
Previous gen were very limited that’s why high price
Porsche has to charge more for it to recover from the 4 cyl debacle.
And they can't sell too many or they will get in trouble with the new emission rules, or they will have to sell a lot of Taycans.
It was egregious for Porsche to sell a 4cyl.
My affair with Boxster continues
Hair Salon Closed - i'm off to my local Porsche dealer
It’s not the GT4 engine. It’s based on the 3.0Turbo engine, but bored out and turbos removed
Which is exactly what the gt4 engine is. Do ur homework.
Is it “Pour-sh” or “Pour-shah” ? I’ve watched many vids of reviewers calling it different ways.
Speak to any German and they will tell you its Porsh-ah, why these reviewers cant manage that 2nd syllable is ridiculous - especially someone like James Disdale who is senior enough to have no doubt been to many official Porsche events.
@@nickholbrook3454 Hahaha thanks so much for the info!!!
@书中自有黄金屋 No, VW would be "Folksvagen". If you're going to be petty, make sure you get it right.
Is that how the pours say it🤣
It's a good idea to respectfully pronounce names in their native language.
Great sound, but less tune ability. My tuned and straight piped S will eat this gts, and at possibly half the price! Food for thought.
718 CS?
How's your warranty? Porsche's aren't cheap to fix.
Seriously how does this offer 99.3% of what a GT4 does on track? A quantitive analysis of a load of bollocks. Different suspension, different brakes, different tyres, different aero. The GT4 is made for the track with all the GT3 parts fitted to it. It might be £10k more expensive, but you get £10k more stuff on a GT4.
6:10 you understeered into oncoming traffic's lane - NOT GOOD - Fantastic car but still expensive - maintenance accessibility is also a concern of mine - pass. And later they can try to fit the 3.0 turbo flat six into a stretched wheelbase, longer ' 719 ' and charge even more ............. ; P
In keeping with the family name of founder Ferdinand Porsche, the company's name is pronounced [ˈpɔɐ̯ʃə] in German, which corresponds to /ˈpɔːrʃə/ (About this soundlisten) PORSH-ə in English. Everything else is a sacrilege!
Flat 6 is history...is Porsche
You can have same soundtrack for 7k. Just buy 986
How does VW group offset the fleet CO2 by putting in this 6 cylinders?...sell more EVs?....
Yup probably. I love the Taycan even more for this potential reason!
They get fined and offset that by charging more money for the car than otherwise would be the case.
The 35 thumbs down must be Tesla’s drivers who are daydreaming a Porsche but can’t admit it.
Need to consider what options need added before the 10k ‘discount’ is considered. For 10k more I’d have the looks of the GT4/Spyder and the extra bits and pieces of power/kit.
good luck buying one new...
Nick Barns it’s coming in a few months :)
