    I know those cheap emip's anywhere, I bought a front disc set myself, nothing really lined up right, had to dremmel the bracket to make it fit... It works but I wish I had gone with the Golf's instead.
    Again Jeff great vid! I dig the dope on the breaks great idea!

      +Steve George Did this several years prior to the Subie conversion. It is a bit of work but you will be very happy with the results when done.

    Would you do a quick free-drawing on your brake line set up? P.valve n master brake setup, I almost ready to do/install similar setup, please!
    Guess big question is why portioning valve is at front line and not Front and Rear?

    Quien me puede decir si la transmisión del vw sirve para un motor subaru v6. Y si no sirve que transmisión se le puede instalar. Gracias.

    Very good and detail explained video. Like. For the all braking system I miss one more information, what is the bore on the front calipers. Also why not to instal pressure residual valve on rear break line?

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  9 років тому +1

      +Gorjan H Not sure of the bore size on the front calipers. I didn't install a residual valve on the rear where them calipers have the ratchet mechanism for the emergency brake so they don't / won't retract like the fronts do.

    i have empy disc with e-brake all around. seems my stopping power ratio is 70x30 front to rear. 17"front and 20"rear. front brakes skids, I wanna have more braking on rear.

      Exactly what I was experiencing too before doing this conversion. Been very happy with how things work now.

    jeff, if you have a type one IRS and you use the empi rear brake kit ... what bracket did you use for the 38mm VW golf callipers... is it the empi old bracket modified? Not sure if I got that

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  9 років тому

      Yes it is. I'll explain things a bit better to make sure you get the right stuff. The steel bracket that mounts on the IRS was from empi. I believe that can be bought separately. If I remember correctly they had a cast one available too so get the steel one. That's the one I egged out (empi) to work with the cast Golf bracket which came with Golf calipers. Don't forget the offset isn't correct so that's where I milled .250 from the Golf bracket to center the opening for the rotor/caliper to fit. I would of showed this prosedure in the video for an easier understanding but so many of these projects here were done before I started on UA-cam.

    Sorry I have a VW sedan model 92. I would like to make the adaptation of disc brakes. That you occupied pump brake and handbrake whip ??? VW model that you get the whip

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  8 років тому

      +Brayan Ortega Hello Brayan. I think you meant have a separate hand brake on each rear wheel. If one could put 2 handles in and run a cable to each caliper that would work very well. I'd think it could be integrated with a hydraulic hand pump system too but don't have any info for you on that and would think it would cost more to setup.

    When adapting these newer VW calipers to the old VW brake lines can you use the newer VW Golf rubber lines and attach them right to the old vw hard lines? Or is the flare different?
    Also, could you tell me what specifically needed milled .25"? Was it the empi caliper mounting bracket? Or the new vw caliper mount? Thanks!!!

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  8 років тому

      +fast03gti18t There is a bubble head metric flare adapter that screws into the caliper which converts it to the older VW flare/line/hose. Sorry don't have a p/n. That cast bracket the caliper mounts on came with the rebuilt caliper and what was milled. That way if ever necessary the caliper could be replaced without having to modify anything again. The stamped steel bracket that mounts to the axle was from empi which worked well to simplify this conversion. FYI - Seems they had a cast bracket too. Don't recommend using that one.

    Hello jeff from Venezuela I have vw bug with subaru sti engine and rear disc brake kit But it no is enough for stop the car have fade the pedal , I will go update with it caliper vw golf you recomendation , one question can use forged bracket ? I have brake pump 25 mm , and yet without install residual valve and proportional valve , if I understand fine only should use residual in front ? Thanks

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  9 років тому

      hedw30 Hello hedw30. I never had the forged bracket that mounts to the control arm so I can't help much with that. I will say anything is possible. Just make sure their will be adequate material left when it has to be structurally modified. You are correct, the residual was just used for the front. The rear calipers with the e brake ratchet mech do fine all on their own. The brakes will work without the proportional valve but where the front is so light (on the Dune Buggy at least) without it the fronts lock first under hard braking. One more thing. I know certain caliper designs needed the e brake operated several times to lessen pedal travel. If you don't have the e brakes hooked up this could be done with a wrench on the arm by activating several times. It's works like the older drum adjustor theory. Under excessive pedal travel that can be helpful at times to know. Never tried it without on this setup. Hope this helps you out, Jeff

    the brass fitting male/male or Female/Male and do you know the size 8-24 threads to 10mm sound right?

      @2jeffs1  7 років тому

      Hi Charles. It has been a long time since doing that job. Checked in my bin and I believe this is the fitting that I used that had the bubble head end that screwed into those calipers for adapting. www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/EDE0/265000/N2033.oap?ck=Search_N2033_-1_-1&pt=N2033&ppt=C0248

      Ok so I'm an idiot I ordered the same calipers for a 74 baja bug here is the problem. I have extended trailing arms and the bracket is a piece of flat bar 1/2 thick not the bracket as you have. So I got more flat bar because the mount holes are wider then the bar that's there. so here is my question. after removing the the old mount can I bolt up the caliper to the new flat bar put is over the disc apply brake to hold and center the caliper then weld in place? interested in your thoughts

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  7 років тому

      Not quite sure what you have going on, too bad I wasn't there, could be very helpful right away. Just make sure where the caliper has a piston on 1 side it must be able to easily free float and re-center over the rotor with what type of bracket that you create. Hope this helps Charles, Jeff.

    thanks .... so just to restate you use the empi bracket and modified it to fit the VW golf calliper.

      commonsense Absolutely. It's kinda hard to explain this but once you have the parts and the rotors installed you'll see its a fairly easy mod.
