Watched this as a refresher, started incubating my first eggs 3 months ago. Hatched out 14 quail, 10 roo’s 4 hens. Just put 20 eggs in the incubator 3 days ago. Oh, I keep 9 roosters in a different cage, only 1 rooster with my 4 hens. Been eating eggs since they were about 7 weeks old. The 9 extra roosters will be headed to the dining table next week. Waiting to see how many fertile before eating all my back up roosters. You have taught me a great deal about both rabbits and quail. I appreciate the time you spend on your videos. Thank You!
I don't know if it will work for you but somewhere I read that if you increase the incubation temperature by 1 to 2° you end up with almost all females... So far it's worked twice... 🎉🎉🎉🎉
just getting into quail keeping. i'll admit that i'm one that doesn't typically interact with videos, but this is such great content. thank you very much for posting this. liked and subscribed, sir.
The dirt pan was a hit with my Quail. I just got 10 5 week olds from a breeder to try this out. Watched your video went out and gave them a pan of some sandy dirt and they instantly went to town. Thanks for the information
Mr. Chris, a fantastic video, as always. Been doing this a while now so this was mostly review for me, but couldn't help thinking how incredibly valuable this video would be for the rank beginner or for those who are just considering whether or not to raise quail. You covered all the bases quickly & concisely. One thing I alway fail to comment on when I leave a response is how clever your door closures are. Most would install them 180° from the way you do it so the bolt would just fall open when disengaged. But a raccoon, if pawing at the closure, would find the door falling open & feast. The way you installed them makes that impossible. So very simple a protection for your your covey. Simple, but it is just one more item that demonstrates how well you have thought this through & why, if we watch & listen to you, we will be successful. You are a prized resource, Sir. And I, as do many others, thank you Chris. We pray God's blessings upon you and your family (incl. Max the wonder dog...)
Very informative and I appreciate your getting to the points and being organized. I am considering raising quail in the event of a SHTF since they are quieter.
A great beginners guide, one of the best I’ve watched so far! Learnt more in this video than many others and recommend you watch the hatching video too if your new to this like me.
One of the best resources for Quail and Rabbit husbandry, but try to make the live broadcasts! Those are the best places to find answers; if Chris doesn't know, someone in chat always does!!
Thank you so much for your video. it has really helped my fiancé and I figure out if raising quail is for us. and because of your video, it is. thank you so much!
Awesome Chris, our quails hatched last month 50% hatch rate so we have 12. Your information is fantastic and has helped us on our way throughout the incubation and housing quail. Keep up the very informative videos! Hi from Perth Australia 🇦🇺
Incredible amount of knowledge. Thank you. Getting ready to start out by using an old rabbit hutch. Purchasing quail from a local farm store. Thank you!
I just started incubating quail again after a 10year break from poultry got chickens then ducks and couldn't resist going back to quail. Very good refresher just got to patch up old Avery for them
Great video. I watched all your videos and actually copied your quail cage layout about a year ago. Live here in South Florida and live on a lake by a passing bridge between 2 lakes and I get people stopping by all the time on there golf carts complementing the build. They can hear the males crow and always are curious. Thanks for the videos and guidance. 🙏
Fun fact if you hang your poultry water containers at the quails head height it eliminates the mess. I hang mine with paracord and have never had to change the water except when it's empty 😊
Lol, my English shepard love to kill but I was able to break him from killing my chickens/quail. He’ll still run in the middle of a bunch of chickens and make them scatter, just for fun, fun for him anyway, I don’t think the chickens appreciate it😂. Now, one of my rabbits getting loose, not so much luck..lol. Have a great day!
You were just about to tell us what kind of sand to use when that little gal jumped out. LOL, So my question is, what kind of sand? Great video, just getting started so I'm excited.
Thank you for another very informative video as always, Chris ✊🏾 Question: If there isn’t an option to place a quail under tress, what to you think about setting up a shade cloth in front of the hutch during the hours that the sun is hitting the front side?
Thank you for this video. My kids and I are planning to start a quail flock in the spring. We are the PNW so I'm planning to privide light and heat. We've had chickens and look forward to keep quail :) May we ask how many coops you keep and what you do with them? We plan to butcher the males and keep on rooster per five females. Then enjoy and possibly sell the eggs locally if we get enough. We're following for more advice!
I was thinking about chickens but you may have convinced me to start with quail. Thank you for your great quail introduction video, it really has helped me. What kind of disease problems have you had to contend with with quail, and how did you deal with them? Thank you so much, Tom 27:47
My quail are 7 weeks old today, what feed should I get? I WAS using the starter,! I got them at 2wks old,There 7 weeks old,and was loosing there feathers. But now they looking good.Thank you for helping me raise my quail thru your videos.TY
You can continue to use game bird starter. That is what I feed all of my birds. Some people will switch to a game bird feed with a lower protein at about 8 weeks old (around 20 to 22%) and you can do that if you want to.
Hey Chris, great video! We are trying quail for the first time and your videos are super helpful. We copied your quail hutch and it came out great. We just moved our quail to the hutch and they seem to spend all of their time in the open side of the hutch. They even sleep in the open side. It’s summer so nights get down to about 50 degrees. Should I be worried that they are staying in the open air side at night? I guess I’m used to our chickens that all head inside as soon as it gets dark.
Fantastic video, channel and info. Thanks mate, but get some handles on your hutch doors and you'll have that 'free hand' to catch that escaping rouge raptor :)
Hi I might be being stupid here, but if you have girls and boys together, can you still eat the eggs or are they ruined now that they're fertilised and you need to incubate?
hey Chris, i have a quick question. I recently had a few quail hatch, all from the same source, but one of the chicks is significantly smaller than the others, would you happen to know why? Thank You!!!
This was a great video. I am thinking of keeping quail but the only place i have to put a hutch is about 10 ft from my neighbors fence and they have dogs that bark loudly every time I come out the side door. Would that freak the quail out too much? They wouldn’t be able to see the dogs, just hear them through the fence.
Honest question, so I work 10 hours a day and there really wont be anyone home to take care of my birds during the day so do you think they could make it through the hatching and then brooding process until they are feathered and then can live in a coop?
I will be building a coop similar to yours I have been taking many notes listening to all your measurements. I just have a question I was wondering if you had jumbo or regular size quail?
Chris, I have been watching for a couple of months now and am curious about your cages. Do you have plans or a video on your cage build? Reasons why you chose your particular dimensions? Anything you would change or improve?
Chris, with your Tupperware feeder setup, have you used ports/hoods in the holes, or do you just cut holes in them and not use the ports? I’ve seen others using ports, so wondering if it’s really necessary.
My first batch of chicks are hatching today and I have built a brooder based on the style of my Shire Farms brooders. My question is, is it OK to have the brooder outside on a covered patio where bugs will be attracted to the light in the brooder? I know chickens love bugs but didn’t know how quail chicks would respond.
My cages are 36x24 and i had 30 birds in there with no issue, i did drop them down to 24 birds per cage. They are happy happy. Just wish they would start laying already lol
How do you do to protect them from rats. A rat had managed to chew the wood of my cage and kill one of my quails so I was planning to re-build it with metal stand to hold the frame . Any advice please

It's tough being male... We're so disposable 😭
Are male quail’s meat less tender than hens? I know that can be a thing with chickens

I add some gravel or marbles in the small waterers. I've had baby quail get wet and die even with those small water rounds.
Not a bad practice at all. I haven't had that issue but better safe than sorry.
