I have a feeling that if Berserk was completed, Guts would probably line up with Vagabond's conclusion. He'd find peace in some way. Neither complete submission or endless struggling, don't know what though. Struggling without a destination is just eternal torment. What would Guts have if he did'nt need to struggle anymore?

    • @Vajrapani108

That would, I'd argue, opposite of what berserk has been about since the start. Berserk heavily borrows from Nietzsche, and like Nietzsche, berserk celebrates life. It doesn't demonify life because of its suffering, but celebrates it and the higher man that has the capability of carve his joy and his way out of that suffering, and the greater the suffering the more it proves the greatness of the man. Guts chooses to go on, he should be dead, that's his destiny, but he chooses to live. Yes their is suffering in his life, a great deal of suffering, but when their is life, suffering would be their too, so would joy. To divorce life of suffering is also the same of divorcing life of joy, and reject life itself is an abuse to whatever is good in the world. Guts fights back against destiny for the things in life he considers good, and also for the sake of what he considers bad, but most importantly, guts chooses life. Their can only be one way in which guts doesn't suffer, that is death, for suffering and joy are sensations, and only death can deprive a man of his sensations.

@@Vajrapani108 Funny that you say that because Nietzsche was inspired by Schopenhauer whom in turn was inspired by Oriental philosophy that makes the most of what Vagabond offers in ideas. One thing don't exclude the other,in the end, both are talking about the same thing. Celebrating life as it is. There is no difference.

@@Vajrapani108 Without negative emotion there would be no positive emotion... is a little too simplistic a statement to credit that to Nietzsche's work. Nietzsche's line of thought is NOT "there is suffering, but there is also happiness." Nietzsche isn't that sort of philosopher. Nietzsche's attitude is moreso; despite the fact that there is suffering, I will live in a way that justifies my life. It's not the same.
The way you're describing your idea, it's as if you're saying people should suffer in order to experience joy. You present the two emotions, positive emotions and negative emotions, as having the same quality/weight/value to them eventually.
I'm not sure it's even true from a scientific perspective.. the idea that we would have no happiness without sadness and/or no sadness without happiness. However, it is possible for people to live with the majority of one and not the other.
If we say the two elements are fundamental and that suffering is justified, it still doesn't explain the decision to choose life over death, for Guts or any of us. Because the suffering is also a hefty part of the package, and it isn't self-evident that Guts or we should pick it just because it has joy in it.. A certain joy that seems masochistic in description; that in order to experience it, you must suffer.
I think Guts' decision to live and survive goes way beyond the ability to experience joy or whatever possible emotion.
It's not about having positive emotion that makes suffering justifiable. I'm not sure there even is a justification for the suffering to begin with. The right way to interpret it is that life simply has suffering, whether you have a rationalization for it or not, suffering is something we have to deal with. That is where the depressing theme of Berserk is possible. The way you're putting it almost glorifies suffering. I don't think that idea is accurate to Berserk.

Well the thing i get is, guts is fighting against destiny, where as Musashi is fighting against his own ego and sense of self. In this way Musashi is similar to pre-eclipse guts, who struggles for the sole reason to "prove" it to his own conscience that he is still a warrior. The difference between both starts from here. And this is where berserks eternal nihilism kicks in, Musashi whenever he is in his lowest, get's helped by someone or something. He finds a shelter, he finds a helping hand, who teach him that their is more to man than his sword. But guts? Whenever he starts to get comfortable, he gets either betrayed by his own friends or by destiny itself. Where as Musashi realises the grandness of life and as be it, "light of the heaven", guts realises the horrors of life, and the "flames of hell". It's not that the two have opposite ideologies, it's the world in which the two exit are different

I don't agree with that. Sure that applies to the Golden age or Lost Children, but by the end of the Millenium Empire, He got several helping hands to the point he realizes that he can't continue his journey with Casca without any help. He would have died several times over without his new party and definitely wouldn't cure Casca either. Both stories revolve around a man defined by the sword finding more to life than just the sword. I would argue the main difference is that with Musashi, he has to accept himself while Guts has to accept others.

Guts definitely still has struggles outside and in to deal with, but that's because he's always on go go go bc the world never gives him a break. Miura writes as the god of the world and as Guts. Inoue writes as Musashi. Musashi was written to be destined to discover himself and find peace through his struggles. Guts is a tragic tale always and I can believe he might not be given a happy ending unfortunately, his life has just always been that sad.

If we look at it from another perspective guts's ending might be not a happy one and yet everything he went through will not be in vain because he struggled and fought till the end and no matter what I'm pretty sure that it'll be something that he can be happy about. But don't worry he'll get the ending he deserves, it might a bitter sweet ending at that.

I never thought about those two works having conflicting ideologies. I always thought about both stories as complementary. Berserk is the story of a young man fighting the adversity of an uncaring universe while Vagabond is the story of a young man beating his adversity while growing old in an uncaring universe and coming to terms with that fact. Both stories complement each other yet most young audiences will be able to identify with Guts more since they´re struggling themself, while older audiences may be able to identify with Musashi more given that he achieved what he set out to do and has a more nuanced outlook after doing so.

I have realized something. The philosophy of each is represented through their art work, with Vagabond having a "flowy" and softer (?) art style, being that of freedom, where it teaches you to understand that destiny is preordained to you, wether it be by the heavens or not, all you can do is to accept, because when you do so, you truly become free. However, Berserk is that of the opposite, where its drawn with bold, rigid lines which partners well to the dark, gruesome fantastical story it tells. Its more pessimistic and takes on the idea of nihilism; you must fight, and carve out your own destiny. It is rejection of preordained fate, and that you must take control of issues with a tight grip, and fight, as man was made to fight. The bold lines and overly detailed panels gives the impression of struggle and that issues must be resolved head on, whilst with vagabond, be free and content with what life throws at you, and accept suffering as part of life.

You might be confused, when I say musashi and guts are the same.even though one flow’s and the other fight’s, they’re doing the same thing. Musashi wants to be invincible but soon realises it’s all meaningless but tries anyway by flowing through suffering but still fights. Guts wants revenge and a purpose to live but also realised he’s probably not going to get it, even still be continues to fight by flowing through the pain of his inevitable failure. This resembles yin and Yang somehow with there being fight in the flow and flow in the fight. But still they are contempt with their futile attempt at greatness and get back. Berserk's different because it's just always been a revenge story. We've caught glimpses of Gut's character and his thoughts, but he's only ever "Changed" because of casca. Whereas Musashi came to this realization on his own, and went through several arcs that showed his reflection and he had to deal with it or ignore it. We don't get that much in Berserk because the path of aggression is basically justified. In Vagabond it shows us that the true way of the warrior is the path of least resistance, similar to Vinland Saga.

It is a pretty interesting video but I disagree on the idea that both are different, I find them to be rather...same in nature. Why I say that? Well, because both preech, at the core, the same thing: Celebrate life, as it is, with all its struggles, with all the bad it has to offer and the good. Guts, despite all that he goes through, never losses sight of his hope, of what he wants to achieve, of his loved one. Sure, one could argue that Berserk is a story about vengeance since Guts want to have revenge on Griffith...but is it though? Slowly he starts to become more friendly, finds other partners along their way after that trauma and...becomes kinder, his inner conflict, that also made him in conflict with the world, vanishing, ever so slowly. (Kinda similar to Musashi's story no?). In the end, "only true strong man are kind."

The thing is you can't flow without struggling real hard first. To transcend the ego, one first must have a real solid ego. The strength required to really, honestly, sincerely surrender (and not out of tiredness, or hypocrisy, or cowardice) is immense. That's why we need to build up to that strength by fighting relentlessly for something that we consider is worth fighting for. And if we don't let ourselves struggle and suffer, forget flowing, we'd be pretty miserable.

  • @darkranger116

They both do line up a lot, but I don't think the ideologies are heavily contrasted as much as the circumstances the characters are in are slightly different, and so the characters can approach life differently. Guts doesn't have any alternative but to struggle - giving up is the wrong thing to do in his situation. Dope vid though

I’ve read up to the 18th volume of Berserk, and I’ve ordered volume 1 of vagabond, I’m incredibly happy with Berserk, it’s by far the best manga I’ve ever read, and I’ve read Naruto, Tokyo ghoul, dragon ball z, demon slayer, and one piece just to name a few. I’ve also been very, very interested in vagabond

One of the best storywise and believe me it's a little above berserk in art style(I mean don't get me wrong both are God tier artworks) but it's true vagabond can't be animated cuz of 2 reasons it's action and art style. Overall it's a good read but it's not finished the mangaka quit it just before the conclusion of the story but thankfully we know what happens

  • @GrubKiller436

Berserk is about death and how we fight against it, and Vagabond is about life and how we can embrace it.
Berserk is about death and how we fight against it. We all know that feeling. That looming heat down the back of our necks as some eventual event is going to happen. The burning sensation of stress. The burden of worry we bear and can't discard. The only thing we're left with is action. We must take action. It's the straight path against our obstacle. We fight.
This feeling is most understood universally intuitively. But the philosophy of acceptance of the present moment is not.
The philosophy that we are creating our own suffering is not an intuitive insight to see, it's an epiphany that has to be realized.

It's definitely a cycle. Sometimes flow is better than fight and vice versa. Every time I've fought it got to a point where digging deep for willpower didn't help me and I just surrendered to the flow instead. Those moments made me believe in destiny more too. You can steer the ship, but you don't control the waves

Why struggle and try achieving something more when you already have a nice job making 6 figures, have a few true friends and a loving family? But if you you have none of that and just a broke college student, then I would say that’s when you should start cosplaying guts and work your ass off. In the end, It’s a matter of what your goals are and what makes your life joyful.

From solely from an Artistic View point i'd say vagabond is Superior
    now now hear me out..
Taking Musashis Fight with the 70 Yoshiokas and Guts with.. well considering Guts's daily life, ok i mean his 100 man fight as an example, Inoue is able to convey what Musashi is feeling during the Fight better than Miura. his emotions his thoughts after every stroke is being conveyed better and his desperation to end it all is better seen, yes Miura is able to convey but its more the situation around guts than what Guts himself is going thru. thats why Musashi is said to be a better written charecter. cause Inoue was desperate day after day in conveying how musashi felt during each and every scene.
