  • Are you having issues with a kenwood radio where you only get the red power LED but the radio will not turn on? Even after resetting the unit? The common issue is the daughter board in these units with the processor chips. Since they are no longer available and the radios are past warranty, here is how to fix the black screen problem.

    I bought a kenwood DXN 690HD at a yard sale for 10 bucks. I wasn’t expecting much and after putting power to it a red power light is all I could get. I tried the reset and still nothing. After watching this video I decided what the heck and went through your procedure. I wasn’t sure how much heat and was easy on it with my heat gun and same problem. I took the board out and tried again with a longer period of heat and that was successful. Thanks a ton for this video!!! I would have likely tossed it. Keep up the great work!!

    This was fantastic! This happened to my daughters HU. I did what you suggested and used a heat gun and gave it a shot. Put it all back together and voila! It worked 🎉. Thanks so much for posting this!!

      @@sonchan3621 watch around the 4:20 time and you will hear him state that the sister board has a chip (IC500). This is the problematic chip/board area. Heat this area up using a heat gun so that the solder will get shinny and reflow any bad connection. This is what worked for my case.

      the processor. Cpu. All this thing ultimately is- is a freaking Microsoft Wibdows head unit. It's just using a mobile version that wouldve been the equivalent of like Wibdows 5 ot 6 mobile version. I would love to know if they sport intel cpus honestly . I want to water cool mine lol jk

    I know this is an older video, but I just had a Kenwood DNX892 die on me last Saturday. I couldn't get the heat gun method to work, I think mostly due to my own fear I was going to slag the board since my guns lowest setting is 750 degrees. I did however try putting the sister board in the oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes as someone else in this thread said they did. It worked! My DNX892 is now working like it's brand new again. Thank you for posting this guide series, and thank you commenters for the discussion that led me to a fix! I new version of this same type unit would have cost me around $1200-1500, so thanks for the savings as well!

    DNX572bh here, same condition as in the vid. Followed these steps, heated the board to 250F for about 30 seconds each side, cooled, reinstalled, works perfect. No lie, like magic. I had never "refloated" a board before, but it was easy, start to finish took 30 minutes. Brilliant, thanks for the video, just saved me $500 easy!

    Hell Yeah. I bought a DNX 691HD in 2014 and installed it in my 2006 Ford Escape. It worked great for 8 years until yesterday... when it just completely quit. I tried all the fuses then I got out my meter and realized it was getting 12 volts on the red and the yellow wires on the plug (to the black - lead). When I plugged in the wire harness to the head unit the red triangle light on the reset button would come on and the fan would run for maybe 3 minutes but nothing else happened. Black Screen, No buttons worked etc. I thought it was either throw it away or spend money getting it repaired. I watched several of these videos about taking the daughter board off and heating it up with a heat gun. I tried it and it worked. I think the main chip to heat is not the one M.Parsons mentioned but the one in the middle. I used a temp. gun to keep from overheating the board but I got it up over 320° F with a heat gun for a minute or two then flipped it over and same thing. I cooled it off slowly then tested it. The damn thing worked again. I have run the radio and the CD player about 6 or more times over 3 or 4 hours today. It is back to working. I am thrilled! Thanks so much you made my weekend and my week. I spent maybe $700.00 in 2014 to buy it and now a similar head unit is over $1000.00.

    Did the trick for me. Thanks a bunch. It was a Kenwood Excelon DNX692 real expensive unit with nav. Used a heat gun for not even a minute each side. Didn't have a thermometer so I went by feel on medium temp. Going to reinstall it in 2 days. Will report back if it ever goes out again.

    Thank you and my kenwood dnx4150bt is now working 🙏
    What I used was a electronics hot air gun on 350deg for a few minutes by three time and let it cool in between. Pull down your unit and look for the gpu pcb board. It’s the one that holds the cell phone style memory card the
    Gpu is close by. “Remove the memory card”!!!! Apply heat gun method and loosely put back together to test it back in your car. Note with removing the memory card you will need to reset up your unit. Back to your bench to reassemble the unit and re-install back into your car, good luck 🙏

    Would this happened to apply to single din Heading units as well? I have a
    Kenwood excelon KDC-X996
    That I purchased years ago but has never seen heavy use I’ve had issues with it since the day I bought it for 400 some dollars Like meeting to have a jumper wire from the frame To an RCA to eliminate horrible feedback That couldn’t be solved after rewiring the harness several times to make sure it was done right as well as the display randomly shutting off but immediately restarting. Being young and dumb when I got it I didn’t take it vantage of customer service nor warranty which it is most definitely out of at this point and now after I spent a bunch of money upgrading my speakers because I missed my old system the display basically never turns on. I’ll be driving regardless if I hit a bump or not it’ll randomly turn on and usually turn off less than a minute later taking the face plate off the red light for the eject button is on so it clearly has power and isn’t losing power it just turns off and it’s not just the display because the sound cuts out along with it unlike when I originally bought it when the display would turn off the music would continue until the display turned back on moments later. I would be eternally grateful and would beyond appreciate Any help fixing this I would even be more than happy to pay someone to fix it Considering to buy a similar head unit with all the same features this one has I would need to sell a kidney to afford it in our current economy. So now I’m forced to use earbuds for music which is not only unsafe but really Fucking sucks since I drive this goddamn truck from coast to coast and everywhere in between 300+ days a year. I just want to hear music through high quality speakers again… Fuck I didn’t even be more than willing to give the friend discount to whoever fixes it if you ever need something delivered that requires Extra care Especially if it’s horse drawn carriages/sleighs, antiques, pianos, or taxidermy. Which are my specialties, PLEASE feel free to reply here and if I don’t answer DM me on my business Instagram @haulinheritage Like I said I would be eternally grateful and would Definitely Owe You one. Thank you.

Because I have a DEHp6700MP pioneer and the MOSFET chip looks burnt up could I possibly make it work again if I reflow it because it still turns on but it just keeps popping fuse so I gave it a different ground and it’s turns on but the black light doesn’t

      There’s another video on the channel where he shows it. Basically there’s a daughter board plugged into the top. Remove the top cover and dvd drive, then the heat spreader plate, then remove the small board on top taking care to remove all the connectors carefully. There is also a solid black connector on the underside that connects it to the main board.
      After you’ve done that, remove the sd card by sliding the metal piece toward the center.
      Then on the opposite side of the board(with the big black connector(bbc😏) there is a big black chip😏 labeled Toshiba. Take a heat gun too it on high setting for a couple of minutes. Or just sit the whole board in an oven on 250F for 20 minutes.

      @somervillearron Рік тому

      well if you listen he did say what to do you reflow the unit it worked for me! wasnt expecting anything but im way happy
      so ill be more clear
      you have to completely dissasemble the unit remove all circuit boards and coat each one in flux both sides
      then you need to heat them i used a oven but a heatgun would maybe be better
      make sure do one board at a time and dont heat near plastic parts watch the flux and as soon as it starts to melt take away from heat wait and heat a further two times (the reason is too much heat at once may damage)
      let boards cool dont move before cool incase any chips dislodge
      this worked well for me my radio is working perfect

      @somervillearron Рік тому

      THANKS MATE MINE IS WORKING PERFECT NOW!
      i just coated all the boards in flux and put them under the grill at 190c one by one i put them under the heat just till the flux melted (less than a minute) then pulled out waited then repeated 3 times for each side to make sure not to melt anything
      i got the radio for free after fitting a new one for a customer so wasnt expecting anything ive reflowed stuff before
      i put it back toghether thinking it would still not work but its been on my rig for 4 days non stop works perfect

    Mine died this week after getting my car back from the mechanic for some engine related work. I think it's pure coincidence. The screen flickered a little, the radio would reset by itself, not it's completely dead. Black screen, red reset light, fan on and nothing else. Resetting it does not do anything.

      That was my issue also. I picked up 2 decks and sold the one. Both still work. Mine is still going to this day and the one I sold is in a competition spl vehicle with do problems.

    fix did not work for me (heat gun at 250F for 90 seconds, then 450F for 60 seconds; both sides 1x; side with that IC500 chip 2x).
    for anyone with confidence in the fix, my DNX691HD is for sale @ $100 (plus shipping). Just let me know.
