Bricked Kenwood DNX. Cheap fix.

  • Really simple and cheap fix for this non working Kenwood DNX690HD. Cheap as in no money was spent. Well, maybe a little on electricity. Nothing was working anymore. No navigation, no radio, no bluetooth or phone. Completely dead.
I understand this is a frequent problem with Kenwood DNX series headunits. It might be a design flaw, a cooling problem for the chip sets inside, lack of good airflow... not sure what.
I watched a few videos explaining how to reflow the chipset and essentially fix the problem.
Use caution in this case. Do it at your own risk.
I would advise those who want to do it to start warming up the board and the chip slowly. Start at 5-6 inches above the board and gradually move the blower lower in order to prevent a thermal shock and have those components cracked. In my case it is a Toshiba chip.

This worked like a charm for me. I have a soldering/reflow station and used the hot air at 240c just on the main chip for about 30 seconds. Everything started working after that.

IT WORKED!! I had a different model which made it was tough to get into but after that it all looked similar enough to follow your directions. I was absolutely not in the mood to spend 700 bucks on another one. Its been on the test bench for 3 days and all is good enough to go back on the truck.

I just tried this out on a kenwood dnx771hd unit and it is back up and working again. I actually did it 3 times as i wasn't sure how long or hot it should get. The working combo for me was using the high setting on a 1400w heat gun for 1 minute. I was about 4 - 5 inches away from the chip and moved it in a small circle over the top of it.

I have an older one and its very buggy, its as if the internal memory is bad or corrupt as it shows missing icon place holders for the most basic things, like arrows, and back buttons, just very low level icons in the GPS navigation screens only. I pulled the internal uSD card and placed it in a Windows PC (linux could not even mount the 2nd partition) and it found 2 partitions on the uSD card (on the board) one GARMIN folder was 31k, other GARMIN was 3.9GB. weird that it had 2 GARMIN folders, one on each partition? I used windows to scan for problems on the partitions and it was able to 'fix' both (?) and when I put the unit back together, it was much faster booting. Could be that the card slot area you mentioned was cold solder joint or the uSD card became corrupt? I put the other uSD the Garmin Express after initializing it in the unit and it said it had a map update. Downloaded it, and put it back in the unit. It came up, then my battery died. Took card back out and put it back into Garmin Express and now it fonds 3 more updates......load them. Take out, put back into Garmin Express and it has another mad download? Seems to not register the map update until you put it back into the DNX and it puts some sort of tag on it. Interesting decks. Keep the CD deck in there, it will help pull air over the heatsink at a higher velocity for better air cooling. You never know when youll spot that CD only title at the thrift shop for a buck.

any time you do a reflow, use a clear flux if possible on the solder joints in question. also, POST YOUR TIME AND DISTANCE OF HEAT SOURCE!!! so may of these say "reflow it"...well,, that could mean warming it up for 30 seconds or really cooking it at over 220C for 80 seconds and maxing at 250C. that is the official reflow temperature for lead free solder using a heat source. I just picked up one and will post results, crossing my fingers!
