  • Dr. Ian Billinghurst is a Veterinary Surgeon with expertise in Education, Agricultural Science, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, particularly Acupuncture. Widely known as the "father of raw feeding," Dr. Billinghurst introduced the concept in his pioneering 1993 book, "Give Your Dog a Bone," which ignited the raw feeding movement. He delved deeper into the nutritional causes of orthopedic diseases in young dogs with his 1998 book, "Grow Your Pups with Bones," which has since become the go-to guide for dog breeders on raw feeding. In 2001, he presented the "Biologically Appropriate RAW Food" (BARF) paradigm in "The BARF Diet," promoting it as the gold standard for companion animal nutrition. Taking his philosophy a step further, in 2005, he started producing BARF on a commercial scale.
In 2016, Dr. Billinghurst explored the connection between nutrition and cancer in "Pointing the Bone at Cancer," emphasizing the potential of metabolic solutions, including ketosis, to target cancer's vulnerabilities. By early 2022, he joined "Gussy’s Gut," a U.S.-based company producing fermented superfoods to bolster the intestinal microbiome, as a senior advisor. Throughout his career, Dr. Billinghurst has offered consultations on evolutionary nutrition for both individuals and commercial enterprises.

I was at the vet with my cat and was asking the girl out front at the desk what meats she would recommend for a cat since they are obligate carnivores and she quickly tried to correct me by stating that cats are omnivores!! I was like, "wtf are you smoking?" I understand why some people think humans are omnivores but it takes some serious ignorance and brainwashing to think the cats are omnivores.

I don't have my cat anymore, but when I did I wanted to feed him right so I bought a bunch of gain free canned food. It was kind of expensive, but my cat wouldn't eat very much of it, so after a number of tries I gave up and went back to dry cat food which was all he would eat. I ended up giving all that expensive food away.

My dog's arthritis got bad and I was buying expensive pet food supplements when a girl told me she made homemade chicken bone broth and it helped her dog. So I did that and it helped so much I double downed and added chicken so her meals were half meat. She improved so much I said, why wouldn't this work for my arthritis? 😂And it did. I vary the meats but it’s always meat on bone. They eat twice a day. The male doesn’t always eat twice as he’s older. For dinner tonight they’ll have lamb breast rib plate, baby back ribs, beef heart and pig liver. I vary the meats, they do eat a lot of chicken carcasses. This morning was chicken legs and backs.
How much… that varies too. I no longer freak out and weigh their food I know by sight how much they’ll eat. I’ve never seen them over eat.. ever. They usually leave a bit behind. My vet is also a beef farmer, and she advocates natural diets and raw bones. A rare woman, she also specialises in old dog and end of life care. She is absolutely wonderful and has helped us through losing 4 dogs over the years.
All our dogs are rescues from puppy farms (puppy mills), and have come to us in very poor mental and physical health. One had orange teeth, all loose, from.lack of calcium. The vet we had then wanted to pull most teeth but I "cured" the dog with 2 raw eggs including shells in every meal. She recovered and thrived until the age of 14.

My dogs are unjabbed and fed real food (BARF), most of it wild caught or organic (I live in rural hunting country). My youngest is all black and his coat is so healthy and shiny that I get compliments on him almost every day. Both have clean white teeth, their breath doesn't smell and the poop is small and easy to pick up.
As a side, kennel cough went through the area last year. ALL the dogs in kennels got it and the local vets were issuing warnings as many dogs were very sick. Because dogs can only go to kennels when they are fully vaccinated, that proves vaccinations don't work. Of my 2 unjabbed dogs, the youngest was sick for a day and fully recovered in 48 hours, my oldest didn't get it. Let that sink in, a 'highly contagious virus' that only makes dogs really sick when they've been vaccinated against it...

My dog has very poor coat due to diabetes and poorly designed ketogenic diet (to control wild spikes in blood glucose), the last time I had her vaccined against the kennel cough she was administered a triple dose, one spray at a time the vet said it didn't go in well. I was furious, my dog obviously got kennel cough soon after this dreadful vaccination. She is now on well designed ketogenic diet and improves by the day.

We have a 15 yr old German Shepherd, a 12 yr old German Shepherd, a 11 month old Karakachan, a border collie and 2 Great Pyrenees who just turned a yr old. We started 100 percent raw when we got the livestock guardian pups and it has been a miracle for our two old shepherds who were starting to really suffer with arthritis. The 3 yr old border collie has finally put on weight and the lgd’s are the healthiest, shiniest most muscled dogs I’ve ever seen. We raise grass fed lamb and beef and also own our own custom butcher shop so it made sense for us. We switched to a 95% carnivore diet ourselves and we have never felt better! It is ridiculous that vets push the grain and plant mix in dog kibbles! I started my smaller dog on a carnivore diet last year as she ended up with cataracts from her “healthy” full star kibble mix of sweet potato, carrots, and chicken that was grain free. Well, I know that kibble is terrible now that I have leaned so much about carnivore and how the potatoes are full of oxalates and carrots and sweet potatoes having plant sugars and other toxins! So I started giving her ground beef and she started showing great improvements. She had runny poop before that too and after doing carnivore her poop went back to normal. She lost all her extra weight so looked healthy again. She was so perky with loads of energy! Still blinded by the cataracts but can make her way around with other senses sharp.
Three months on carnivore was her yearly check up and the vet was so argumentative saying I can’t just give her meat as she needs grains and fiber! I said “dogs are like wolves, they don’t need to eat plants! They are carnivore!” The vet, you could tell, was a vegan himself as his appearance looked like it. He said, “wolves eat potatoes!” I said, “maybe if desperate but they eat primarily meat!”
I gave him carnivore doctors names, including yours Dr. Baker, and told the vet that he needed to do some research into this whole thing. Dogs need meat and don’t need the plants in kibbles. It’s harming dogs and ruining their over all health and reducing their life expectancy. He wasn’t happy and looked frustrated, but I didn’t care. Time to find a new vet I guess. Or stick with him for a few more years so he can see how it improves dogs lives and over all health.
Great video Dr. Baker! Loved it! I am thrilled you found this vet to explain the history and perspective on dog nutrition!
Have an awesome day Dr. Baker!

His response, this company spends millions of dollars on research. To which l laughed, think about that. Anyway he was pretty easy with my going home-made. The vet tech later approached me with, wolves go for the stomach first because they crave the contents, plants, I laughed, maybe, but my take was organ meats. And the alpha gets first dibs. My senior dogs and puppy are doing amazing. Especially the puppy she has never known anything else. She's a beast. As with life natural is best. Never get tired of these topics. 👍

Humans and dogs starting living together and evolving together tens of thousands of years ago, potentially over 40kya. There is a reason for this, dogs could help us protect our camps and later hunt with us, and in return they ate the parts of our food we weren't eating, bones. We hunted for the vast majority of our nutrition, we ate the meat and some offal, the dogs ate the bones and some offal. Perfect relationship. Then when we start farming, both humans and dogs start getting sick.

I've been running a pack of dogs for 15 years. Both of my Goldens have been eating fully cooked chickens most of their lives, almost daily. We throw other meats and bones in there as well. For a 9-year-old Golden, everyone compliments me on his health. He also has the whitest teeth ever. This is all due to bone-gnawing. I feed them all raw beef bones for soup regularly, and they have no problems ever. No dog I've ever fed cooked bones to has ever had a problem digesting them or with bones piercing their intestines, etc. In fact, I've had the opposite problem: one of my dogs was chewing on a raw deer bone once that was coyote scraps, and there was a one-inch-long splinter in his throat for 2 days before I noticed it. He'd paw his face every now and then, so I knew something wasn't right. Please explain how even raw bones splinter. We need to know more about bone splintering because I feel it's mostly BS. Sure, if you throw a chicken wing to a tiny dog that's never eaten a bone before, it may choke. People usually don't train their puppies or adult dogs to eat bones. I was chewing up chicken wings 15 years ago and feeding them a pile of mashed-up chicken bones because every other dog I had walked before then had eaten every chicken wing it had ever found while walking without any trouble. Why not feed them all that mashed-up goodness? If they're soft enough for me to chew, then surely they're fine for the dogs. Why let all that marrow and bone go to waste when I know they need the mineral content from them so badly? And yes, dogs do fight over bones. They also fight over piles of human feces, so when they're not eating a proper diet (a.k.a., dry kibble), they never get the proper nutrients they need and wind up eating all kinds of nasty sh*t out in the forests. As a dog trainer, I have issues with the whole kibble thing and with how brainwashed people are by the vets promoting poison so they can make more money. The vets and doctors have no clue about proper diet, nutrition, and history of species. If there's one thing I love to watch, it is giving a dog a bone. When I ask my clients if they remember the saying, "give a dog a bone", they usually look at me like they're lost, void, and completely mindlessly brainwashed by the vet companies that it's quite sad so I will sneak certain dogs in meat and bones whenever I can. Vegan dog owners are the absolute worst. If you're a vegan and refuse to feed your dog meat and bones, you simply s*ck. It's 100% disrespect to the animal that they truly are which is a WOLF. (Domesticated, but still a wolf). You can't take the diet out of the wolf and treat it like a little human child unless you're among the ignorant.

She got fed table scraps, mostly meat, the occasional Alpo (when it was made out of mostly real meat, I think) and yes, uncooked pig bones. She also brought home to eat quite a few birds and mice. She lasted 17 years, never vaccinated or visited the vet (there wasn't one near), she died quietly in her sleep.

I couldn’t believe how many plants are in food for cats & dogs! These animals are clearly full carnivore in the wild- when they naturally are drawn to eat grasses they vomit.
Our cats are much healthier since now they get mostly raw red meat with a tad bit of high quality high protein canned meat. At some point I hope to be able to quit with the supplemented canned food but at least a good 2/3 of their current diet is raw red meats..
