I grew up in that era and to me the "grunge" style was always about wearing what you had (like that old pair of ripped jeans because you can't afford a new pair), being comfortable (baggy old shirts always feel soft and worn in) and suitable to the elements (it's cold so I'll wear a jacket that's warm, not necessarily fashionable). I know this is an old comment but this is just the blunt truth of the "grunge" look. It wasn't even trying to be a fashion style or statement, considering that it came from the midwest area of the United States that was a bit more chillier in weather, with the "grunge" music scene that was popular in the underground of those towns, many of the musicians and the fans who went out to go listen to the music were working class people who couldn't afford fancy, boutique, or brand/designer clothes and they just made due with what they had which were hand-me-down clothing or clothes from family and/or friends and clothes that were cheap that you could often find in the thrift store without breaking the bank and worrying if you could make your rent and/or car payment. I think that's what a lot of the kids today who go for this "look" don't seem to get and to be fair it's not their fault but it's something they should really take into consideration. Because a lot of these so called "grunge" looks that these kids call it don't look "grunge" at all and mostly just like some form of "E-Girl/E-Boy" look.

The perfect aesthetic is a balance of grunge and hip-hop. So many people do it in their own way, scarlxrd, trippie red, lil uzi vert, city morgue. Crazy how you can create so many different looks with it
Growing up in that era. (granted it hit hard when i was around 4th to 5th grade and pearl jam has been my favorite band since, but love all of those bands) there was definitely an excitement to have that interjected and pushed in different directions the past few years. The grunge label in terms of the music like you referenced was always maddening because you look at the 4 key bands at the center of it and outside of all being rock bands from an area, they musically were all really different. The aesthetic never felt like a life style or a commitment the way the punk movement did, outside of the frustration when major fashion brands co-opted it. I remember an interview where eddie vedder of pearl jam was talking about this tan corduroy jacket he got at good will for about $9 bucks that he wore all the time (cut like a denim jacket). about a year later walks by a shop and see's his jacket in the window....done by marc jacobs...costing over a grand. haha. so there was certainly an aspect definitely at the time that found it a bit absurd to see high fashion brands take their cobbled together thrift store looks, copy them and charge a fortune for it. Like you mentioned though, that seeped into the fashion culture in a big bad way and 30 years removed or so from it now, fashion has changed so much that it just has this lasting effect that never fully went away and shape things today. The only recent trend that i have always been mixed on is the band tee's. being a kid in the 90's who also became a professional musician, i certainly loved the return of band tees, but part of me couldn't get passed the fact that a lot of people were wearing shirts of bands purely for aesthetic purposes and had barely heard of let alone heard bands they were wearing. When i have gone back and either dug out or re-bought some vintage band shirts, there are certain bands i didn't love enough to even now be willing to get a shirt of. even if it looks cool.

Random little piece of history. actually knowing the music and understanding the culture of Grunge makes the aesthetic so much more natural genuine and easier to pull off.
I'm only 19 but grew up with poor af grungey parents so I was always surrounded by the, "wear what you have and be happy with it" and "comfort and usability over looks." And I never lost that, I wear what I can afford and what I'm comfortable in. And I don't really care to change how I dress as this trend seems to be in flux again lol

I mean you explained it pretty well, my mother was huge on grunge, in the 90s she was my age, she was there when Kurt blew up and when he died, she had a binder of eddy vedder lemme tell u that thing was HUGE. So I grew up with it and it’s a big part of who I am what I grew up listening too, it blew up cus of the over indulgence of the 80s the “you need this brand of purse, and this brand of car, and this brand of shirts or pants” to be cool or respectable that attitude in the 80s repulsed the kids they grew up to be Kurt, eddy, Chris Cornell, and they basically said “wear what you want, don’t be ashamed if you don’t have all this money and facy name brand things you are still valued as a person” plus a lot of other things. The movement the music and fashion means a lot to me. And others. So seeing them capitalize it sell expensive versions of it sickens me.
Grunge aesthetic: truly an idgaf ideal. I've been on that idgaf ideal ever since I could ever remember, even before the grunge movement. 1991-1994 was one of my most favorite periods of pop culture history and I'm grateful to have been a part of it; I absolutely love the music and always will. I am 46 now, was just coming of age in 1990, and I have a profound sense of nostalgia of this time. Almost feels like this was my 60's / 70's . Much respect.
I personally like the grunge aesthetic but I think it only really works if it's natural. I like my stepdads oversized flannels and handmade tees but when you start buying really nice pieces it's too...clean maybe? I mean wear what you want, live your life, I just don't think it evokes the same feeling when it becomes name brand and obviously new. I will say I think the better evolution of the style is E-girl and E-boy styles of grunge. Say what you want but it's a goth and grunge mix that I think works really well and really let's you mix and match thrift finds and bought clothes.
I’m still stuck on slim/skinny distressed jeans, oversized vintage shirts (not just band t’s, all sorts) flannel, cardigan, hoodie, crew neck. But I’ve been with this style since before the whole Big Bang of the wave.. just slightly. I was a skater growing up in the mid 00’s so I had the style of skater/hip hop/punk. And it’s just what I’m most comfortable with and what fits my body type and personality best. I’m actually kindve happy it’s dying out and not as big. So now I don’t look like every other hipster, but at the same time now I just look like I’m stuck in 2016-2018 lol. Can’t win.
I swear rap artists are the rock stars of today. The aggression, angst, rebellion, energy, even the live shows of some of the artists emerging over the last few years, it's pretty amazing.

The greatest irony is that people who don't like and diss rock music were the ones repping and pushing the style style post 2015, that whole metal and rock band-tee thing was the worst people wearing band tees whose music they'd never listen to. Its hilarious to me as someone who was a teenager between 2005 - 2010, I was in to rock music, the grunge thing and wearing vans and skateboarding but was totally mocked at school in the UK for being a "grunger" and liking that stuff and dressing that way. But now the skater look and the grunge aesthetic is super popular truly ironic.

I have respect for artists like Lil Peep and Xxxtentaction for using actual melodies in most of their songs like cry alone by lil peep it has melody and there are guitar and rock covers and the demo had a guitar instrumental you can tell peep grew up with rock love them but nirvana is my all time favorite

My first day ever in Tokyo , in 95, I got on the metro and there sat a complete suited-up Mod, straight out of a Jam video. It was quite striking.

Excellent video! But my opinion. I really think “Grunge” is a lifestyle and shouldn’t be made into a trend. It’s quite cringy for me to see those who know nothing about the lifestyle or wear a tee with a band they know nothing about. I hate trends.

If talking about a style and where it comes from is "cringe" to you then maybe you should move on. You don't have to watch and, respectfully, it's really not up to you to decide where we should be as a society. There's plenty of topics that don't cover grunge on this very channel. It just seems odd to singularly point out THIS video as the "cringiest".
