  • *Update-sequel video is now here! • 4runner TRD rims mount...
    (and a third video coming out maybe late August 2020)
    •Nitto Terra Grappler tires can be bought on Amazon here: amzn.to/3gyTFHj
    •Rough Country 3" lift kit for THIS vehicle can be found here: amzn.to/2XQPVLL
    If you also live in Sumner County, TN, and have a Toyota 4x4, join our club and let's visit monthly! So far, I've started a FB group to help keep us connected, and the title is: Toyota 4x4 Club of Sumner County. Look us up!
    (More add-ons are planned and upcoming) Subscribe now so you will get future videos as well on this 4runner that I will be making)
    This is a small documentary of a 4th generation, 2006 Toyota 4Runner receiving a 3" lift and a tire upgrade. Also, some other details are mentioned. This video is provided for other 4Runner owners who like I was, may be trying to decide on what lift height and tire size to go with on their upgrades.
    The before photos show the older 265/65/17's on the rims, and no lift. We transformed it with a 3" Rough Country lift kit, and a new set of 285/75/17's. (Nitto Terra Grapplers)
    Note: Prior to me shooting all this footage, I had already blacked out the mirrors, front grill, badging, and rims with Plasti Dip. (I didn't do the final coats on the rims until after I had the new tires mounted, because I knew there would be some damage from mounting with dipped rims. It wasn't much damage though)

    Just bought a 2007 4Runner. Great price, garage kept, only 43,300 miles. Spotless doesn’t describe the condition. It’s like brand new, right down to the original floor mats and the factory hitch still in an unopened box! The truck is awesome!

      Impax Films thanks man. I’d like to do some mods, (I love the look of your 4Runner) but I’m gonna give it a couple of months before I change anything. My truck still has the original Panasonic Battery! Can you believe that? I can’t stop going over it LOL...
      Oh ya, and those mirrors, inside on upper back corners are awesome, didn’t even know that was an option.

      Wow nice find. I’m new to Toyota’s and 4Runners. I’m usually a low mile one owner person when buying used but just bought a 2008 SR5 with 206000 miles. I was shocked by how good it rode. The color is red salsa metallic. I’m blown away at how good these things drive. Even though it is very basic inside everything seems well built. How did you find yours?

      Awesome. I picked up an 08 4runner rwd, with 52k miles for $8500. Minor cosmetic issues, some speakers didn’t work and cel was on but when plugged into one reader I figured it was the gas cap. Got a crazy deal on it. Not sure if I should keep it, or resell it for around 13-14k and get a 4wd 4runner or a gx470.
      But overall I’m super happy with it and gonna enjoy it for now.

      266k this week. I do miss my E30 bmw, but this thing has been an absolute beast. It'll go anywhere you want, and leave very little worry in your heart haha. 3'' old man emu springs and struts, 33'' KO2 because it needed tires and suspension either way. About to change the water pump and timing belt, preemptibly becuase I like garage time still.

Also we can store gear in back, and out of the weather, and throw bigger things on top if we want. And if you haven't seen this other photographer guy with the red 4runner, you will love this.... ua-cam.com/video/dz0kOuMlS9A/v-deo.html

    Nice transformation. Amazing what a set of wheels/tires can do. I've got a 2007 Sport (6cyl) with 176k miles. Just bought some replacement shocks and struts (Monroe) and will remove the xreas system fully. Adding a 2.5/1.5" leveling kit, set of Level 8 Mk6 wheels (gunmetal) as well. Only have 265/65/17 BFGs on it now and will keep those on for at least a few months. Planning to upgrade/upsize them to Falcon Wildpeak AT3W 265/70/17 which is about 1" bigger and look pretty terrific. Love this truck and don't plan to ever get rid of it!

    310,000 miles on the 2003 4Runner. Only issue has been frame which I had welded up for $914. Hope to get at least another 100,000 miles out of it. They just don’t seem to wear out. Original shocks. Probably due, Bilstein 5100’s perhaps , ditching the awesome x-reas hydraulically interlinked originals. Highway miles.

      I bought an 06 4Runner Sport with 62800 miles on it last August. I love hearing how people are getting over 300,000 miles on them. I'm running all synthetic oil and good filters, so, I'm hoping for the same. Btw, I got rid of the xReas and put the Bilstein 5100's on all 4 and I very happy I did. They cost more, but the ride is so much better, and the handling is better. One xReas shock was leaking, so, the ride wasn't good.

    How are you liking your 4Runner after being lifted? I am considering purchasing one and lifting it about 3inches to do some moderate offroading as well, I feel like a 4Runner will be much more reliable than a Jeep. I enjoyed watching your video, keep it up!

    • @ImpaxFilmsNashville
      @ImpaxFilmsNashville  5 років тому

      Russ Layton -Great question, and yes I have become a strong advocate for the 4Runner. It’s a great vehicle, and has been very reliable. The 3” lift was just what it needed. I feel like I can drive about anywhere now. Plus it looks great. A few months ago, there was an accident on I-65 North here in Nashville, and traffic was all backed up, and I got caught in the gridlock. It was after dark. So I made my own offramp. There was a very steep incline, off to the right, covered in grass, that came down onto a nearby side road. It’s so steep, it must have looked to others watching like I disappeared over the edge into the darkness of night, to my death. Ha. I safely escaped the stand-still traffic and made my home. Nobody followed me down the hill. Very few could have. I need to have an SUV for all my hauling various things to and fro, and this is the best SUV for my lifestyle. It’s big enough to hop curbs and rocks, but it’s not a huge monster vehicle. My wife can get in and out of it will only small difficulty. lol. Thanks Russ!

      @@ImpaxFilmsNashville Good to know, thanks for the reply. I have owned an 89 Toyota Pickup, 98 T-100, and a 2000 Tundra 4wd, all have been great vehicles that lasted past 200k without ANY major issues. My girlfriend does not care for the 4Runner's looks and instead prefers the Jeep Grand Cherokees, but I know the Fiat/Chrysler product won't last remotely as long and will give me more headaches than the 4Runner would as it ages. At the end of the day, I'd rather have a Toyota out on the trail where things could go wrong. Keep up the wheeling and videos, and thanks for posting!

    • @ImpaxFilmsNashville
      @ImpaxFilmsNashville  5 років тому

      Russ Layton Cherokees are just not sexy or manly. A jeep wrangler is though, and my wife actually prefers those. I mean, she prefers it for me if she could pick. A decked out 4runner TRD is always a great choice for a manly but sporty SUV with off-road capabilities.

    • @russlayton3166
      @russlayton3166 5 років тому

      Videographer Diaries I completely agree. I have owned an 89 Jeep Cherokee XJ with the legendary 4.0 and it was great but I’m not a fan of the newer Wranglers/Pentastar engine. Ultimately the 4Runner accomplished just about everything the Wrangler will and also is much more livable from a daily road perspective I think. I’m not overly concerned with the girlfriend’s preference here since it won’t be her rig anyway. I’m sure I’ll end up doing the 4Runner. Any comment on whether I should get the 4.0 or 4.7? From what I know they are both great engines. I’m just concerned the 4.0 might bog down with running 32-33” tires at Denver area altitudes so I’m leaning towards the 4.7 V8 if I can find a good one.

    • @ImpaxFilmsNashville
      @ImpaxFilmsNashville  5 років тому

      Russ Layton Hmmmm. I actually wish I had the V6. Would save me a little gas money, and I only tote a Waverunner around. I spent some time near Denver, at Fort Carson in the army in 1987. I had a ‘68 VW bug at the time. Probably not much to compare here. So I probably don’t have much input on this. Like I said, just wishing I had the V6. Tub at do well to have the 4.7 of you can wrangle one up. They only made so many. But they are out there.

  • @jimijo33

    Just got a 2008 4runner today. It needs new tires so I am thinking I will do the lift at the same time. 1 question on the Rough Country package; I see it for $279 starting but then in the front you can choose to get strut spacers or lifted struts (+$300) and in rear is N3 or V2 (+200). Which did you do, what do you think is the best choice?

    I have a White 2008 Sport and I was inspired by your excellent video to do a 3" lift, matt black powder coat my wheels and add Nitto Terra Grapplers. I tried 285/75/17's but they rubbed really bad so changed these to the 285/70/17's, but these still rubbed on the chassis and upper control arms. My next step was adding 1.25" G2 Hub Centric wheel spacers. I just had to chop some plastic from front mud flaps and in front of wheel. Did you have spacers installed? And also do you happen to have any vibration or pulsation at low and/ highway speeds? I unfortunately do after all this.

      Just now saw your comments for some reason. Glad you liked the video, and the new sequel was just uploaded two days ago, and it shows the TRD rims being mounted, and the rubbing issues that came with it. I had minor rubbing from the tires alone, but the new rims made it really bad. Had to do some chop chop! ..and I have no vibration or pulsation, thankfully.

    • @ImpaxFilmsNashville

      Actually mine has the X-RAYES suspension, and if I recall, they had to specify that in the lift kit order. I believe there may be two different types of lift kit, according to X or non X. I'm not all that knowledgeable on suspensions, but Brian is, and I had to make decisions as he gave me choices. So, YES, my Sport edition worked well with Rough Country!

    Where did you offroad? I’m from Atlanta and moving to Nashville next week and want to see if I can find some cool spots locally. - just got a 2005 limited 4R with a 3in lift. Used to be a big BMW guy but will always have a 4R in the future.

      Wow, BMW, I love it. My wife drives a new convertible Mercedes C 300, and I drive it most of the time when we are together, but I always tell her if I ever get a car car, it’s going to be BMW. She says they are too bumpy of a ride, which sometimes they are I think, but I love the manly, slick and sleek look of them. Has to be the right model though.
      So, where did we go 4 wheeling at? In this particular video you commented on, I only went to a few little spots I knew of Offroad, but nothing to speak of. If you watch the sequel, which is linked in the description here, you will see footage at an actual off-road place called Wooleys. www.woolysoffroad.com
      Funny thing is about that place, I didn’t know what you are supposed to pay to get in, so we just rolled in with my SUV and went out to play! We didn’t take full advantage of many of the acres though, and just stayed in one basic location. I found out later I was supposed to pay. LOL. I think it’s $15 per vehicle or something like that. Other than that, there may be a few other locations you could look up, but there’s really not much for off-roading in Tennessee. Most places are just covered in dense trees, or if you do happen to see a place that looks tantalizing, usually some farmer owns it and he will come out in a truck or a golf cart and hold a shotgun to your head until you leave. Well, I’m exaggerating, but not by much. Just got to be careful. I’m originally from California where there is lots and lots of open space to go out him. Keep in touch!

    • @Bermudezlatenightshow
      @Bermudezlatenightshow 5 років тому +1

      @@ImpaxFilmsNashville Hahaha, absolutely not. BMWs are awesome, just sometimes catch a poor reputation of being unreliable - just have to replace things before they go bad and you'll never have a problem. If you let just one thing go out, the car will still run, but then a mountain of problems fall on you shortly afterwards. The ride is firm and classic BMWs will always be top notch of the past. But definitely love my 4R more. Sure, it doesn't go too fast and the MPG is horrible, but I like the height, protection, extended reliability, cost and versatility of a 4R compared to a BMW. Missed the turn? No worries, make a U-turn in the median. --- Whereas I would scrape my front bumper in a BMW just backing out of my driveway..
      I've heard about Woolys - I actually think there and some mountains in Chattanooga will be my first spots. I'll be over towards Murfreesboro. Thanks!
      Lol you are NOT exaggerating, unfortunately. Georgia is the same way; that's why I usually try places where someone else has been first haha.
      For sure! Cheers.

    Hi Impax Films! Great video! I just purchased an 07 4Runner and I love it! However, I've been thinking about lifting it but unsure I'll like it. I definitely won't be doing any crazy off-roading. Maybe an occasional fire road, but nothing where I'd need serious skills. With that in mind, I'm concerned that it won't handle well for the day-to-day driving. Specifically, does it get to feeling top heavy or floaty? Also, is there a way to do it without needing to chop the wheel wells as I can see from the comments below is headed that direction for you? Finally, I have to say, your voice & cadence reminded me a bit of Warren Miller. ;-)

    • @ImpaxFilmsNashville
      @ImpaxFilmsNashville  6 років тому

      John Shipps - sorry for the delay in response. I’ve been caught up in a crazy life circumstance. Well, my truck does seem a little bit floaty, but once I got used to it it’s fine. I did have the wheel wells chopped a little bit, and that will be featured on the upcoming sequel. Concerning my voice and cadence, I do have a local radio show once a week, but I haven’t heard of that guy you mentioned, and now I must look him up! Back to 4runner chat, I am still thrilled with the look and usefulness of my 4runner. Don’t hesitate to give yours a lift and some beefy tires too! It’s fun!

      I put Bilsteins on my ‘07 a couple years ago. I picked them because they allowed me to lift 3/4, or 2” in the front on installation. I just did the 3/4” life and it’s perfect. Mostly a road car but it looks much better almost level. The shocks ride great. Can’t remember the model number...5100’s maybe.

      Luke Hansen -just a little bit, when it’s in reverse and the wheels are turned one way or the other. No too bad though. And then when I had the new TRD rims mounted, the running got a lot worse, You can see all that in the sequel video. (Linked in the description here).

      Yes I did all the Plastic-Dip myself. I've been into painting and finishing for many years professionally, off and on, so I'm pretty good with all that. But it's fairly easy even for a non-pro. Just go according to directions. I think the cost that dat for the lift, tires, and axles was about $1,800. Not bad at all. The sequel will be coming out soon!

      Only slightly, when it's in reverse, and you crank the wheel. This is typical. In the sequel video, where I had the TRD rims mounted, it created a lot worse rub. You can watch that video if you wanna see how it was fixed.

      Finally found my tape measure. So, if you are talking about the outer lip of the fender, which is the visible edge, to the top of the tire, it's 5 inches. But if I measure from top of the tire, at about the middle tread, to the roof of the wheel well, it's like 7-ish. But I think you are after the 5" measurement that is visible by looking at the vehicle from the side. I hope that helps.

      YEs, I'm getting rubbing when it's in reverse and wheels turned a little bit. But then I crank the wheel farther, and no rubbing. I usually try to find the sweet spot where there's no rubbing, and keep it cranked that amount. Soon, I hope to eliminate the issue with the usual slight mods. Not a fan of rubbing. : )

      Yeah, as an owner of 06' I can confirm that NO 4RUNNER has ever had independent rear suspension. The 4th gens are independent up front, solid rear. Trust me, I've just spent the last month replacing the CV axles up front and putting new suspension on front/rear.
      As a matter of fact if they ever did go to an independent rear setup they'd probably alienate 99% of their loyal supporters.
