Excellent job. I got the same wheels new for $400. $150 to mount on existing tires. Bought Bilstein 5100 for $475 for for front and rear and Moog coils for front and rear for $200. I felt like I saved money. You really did well. My 2005 has 180k miles so I figured new coils were in order.
@@tronixster I finally finished my install. Did it all myself like you but my 4runner is a 2005 that is a Midwest car so almost every bolt had to be heated to remove due to rust. I am looking to change out my struts on my 07 4runner but i am Lowering my 4runner 1.75' in front and 2.75" in rear. Do these bilstein 5100 carry the same stock height as the OEM?
Your bolts came off soooo much easier than mine did lol. I fought with the top 3 bolts of the struts for about an hour each side. You should link this video to the t4r forum about the conversion, it would probably help some guys out. I also got a 2003 v8 Limited, although yours is alot cleaner.
Great stuff. I've done this a few times now. Works with V6 and V8. Also look up on adjusting the rear airbag sensor to get it to go higher. Especially if you decide to go higher in the front like using the Bilstein 5100s.
Nice video, thanks for posting. It’s worthwhile noting that you can also use the rear shocks from a Tacoma. In this case you need to buy new eyelet bushings for the lower shock mount, press out the original bushings for and replace them with 4Runner size bushings/eyelets. This avoids having to modify the frame of the 4Runner in any way.
Hey Jeff D, any idea if the eyelet bushings off a 2020 4Runner TRD would fit an 05 4Runner? I'm hoping so, just grabbed my set off Craigslist this morning and I'll go for the install this weekend. Phenomenal video, Paul! My alignment guy quoted me over $400 for new shocks and another $400 for labor. Snagged a full OEM set from a 2020 4Runner TRD, used for 11k miles for $180. Can't beat that value!
Thanks for the video. I followed your other video to upgrade my stereo to the FRS one. And I am actually getting ready to replace the XREAS on my 2005 4runner. Already got the suspension off a 2016 4runner. Also have the same wheels powder coated grey, with some Cooper Discovery 275/70/R17. This video is again gonna help a lot. Cheers
Just got my 03 4Runner back from body shop I bought it recently and the guy I bought it from (had a very similar voice like yours) had already replaced the struts in the front 👍 so I’m good for now Thanks for video tho I enjoyed it
I think the springs are a bit different, something about the 4runners being progressive and the Tacoma not having that style. Not sure exactly what that means but I believe it has to do with suspension softness/compliance, but they do work! For those getting rear shocks, you will need to change out the bottom bushing on the Tacoma shocks to fit 4runners
Yeah those old progressive springs are no good honestly, especially in the from where you have lots of weight. And Tacoma rear shocks won't fit on 4Runner. They are different
@@tronixster the shocks do fit. Just the Bottom bushing needs to be changed according to a ton of forums... Of course you get no springs since the Tacoma runs leaf springs if that's what you mean.

Your 4runner is very clean. I'm thinking about getting one of these but it's a 04 and I keep hearing those have head gasket issues. I think I'm gonna save and get a 06-09 when the issue was fixed. These cars are so expensive to this day. That Milwaukee you have is a beast, it makes quick work of suspension jobs lol. I have one as well. 👍
Yeah I really enjoy this car. One big down side is terrible MPGs lol I've also bought with the blown engine and did an engine swap. I took V8 out of 2006 4Runner
I cut all the x-reas lines out of mine and did a spacer lift, but didn't like the spacer lift, so I did it over again with new struts and springs. I added air bags in the rear springs for towing. I have all Bilstein parts and it rides wonderfully. I like working on my truck so much I did it twice, you did it right the first time.
Loved this video Paul! That's funny, I'm from the Beaverton / Hillsboro area as well. Bout to pick up some Tacoma suspension today and have the exact same wheel setup too! Loved the content brother
Ok another comment that is more of an advice thing sense I’m an ASE certified steering and suspension expert that specialized in 4wd vehicles! When replacing any suspension work where you’re replacing like lower control arms or shocks and the control arms, what you are going to need to do is put the tires back on the vehicle let the jack down and rest the vehicle under full body weight on the suspension reverse and pull forward a couple times for the suspension to settle then torque the bolts after the suspension has settled! This is because these parts like the control arms and bottom basically the parts that either turn or have an up and down movement the reason for allowing the suspension to settle is these rubber bushings are basically glued into place and if you don’t let the suspension to settle before torquing them down these rubber bushing will absolutely break away from their glued in areas and will make noise and wear out a lot faster and in my state were we have state safety inspections these broken bushings will cause the vehicle to fail the state inspection for broken suspension parts! And for good sakes people sport utility vehicles and trucks aren’t cars so stop referring them as cars! It’s freaking annoying to hear someone call a truck or an SUV a car!
Hey Robert, thanks for sharing this actually. I'm not showing it on the video but I actually did lower the car to the ground before tightening all the suspension components that have bushings. Thanks again for bringing this up.
Nice work bro. I have a 2004 Ltd with xreas. Currently @ 197700 miles and my system still works great. If I were keeping her I'd do the same but I'm actually selling her 😢.
Awesome video! You must be somewhere in the Midwest or west coast based on how easily those bolts came out. One comment... You should stabilize the suspension before torquing down the bolts/nuts going to bushings. Maybe you did that off camera though.
Very good vidd, not a lot of wasted time yet to the point. I must say the stock wheels and tires looked way better than those new ones. Those are one of the worst looking wheels they came out with
I'm glad you found this video helpful and really appreciate the support. About the wheels, I personally like them but it always comes down to personal preference and liking. Enjoy your 4Runner
Great video! Informative and to the point! You may have already noticed but it looks like your front passenger side cv boot is damaged. Thought I would point it out.
@@tronixster If you replace and don’t reboot it, DO NOT use cheap aftermarket axles. Get a good used one from a 5th gen 4runner or GX460. Same axle but with better boot design.
Great video! Truck looks amazing. I’m doing this soon with 2022 Tacoma Sport struts. Curious if the Tacoma rear shocks are decent. Heard a few people say the rears need upgraded. My 4Runner also has XREAS. Probably blown out now.
As far as I know Tacoma rear shocks are decent but they won't fit 4Runner because it's different suspension setup and shocks are longer and mounted differently.
Awesome video. I have a 4the gen 4Runner and I’m curious if the slanting in the front happens over time? Or if it comes like that? I am second owner and not very car savvy
Hey brotha it’s a combination of both. They do come slanted from the factory for stability purposes and suspension does sag over time but obviously it looks better when it’s level.
I know that this is an old video but the Tacoma stuff can be used for both front and rear. The rear shock lower bushing just has to be swapped out to an Energy Suspensions 9.8108G and then it's a direct bolt on affair with no modification needed to the frame.
Great video! Really considering doing this project. Thank you. Question, you think '22 4Runner rear struts would be a viable swap? Going on an 08 4 runner.

Hey Mike, reason I deleted my XREAS is because it lost most of the fluid and it was cheaper to install newer non XREAS suspension. XREAS is too much maintenance for same performance. Just go with Eibach Truck Pro Lift.
Hey Mario, I don't have a reference to any suspension parts but front coils and struts will work from any 2005 to 2022 Tacoma. But I recommend taking off new Tacomas 2017 and up. Just because it's newer and better
I have a 07 4runner SR5 what do u recommend for upgrades something simple like u did What year can I use ? Any help would be appreciated I want to do it myself also
Basically, look for any front coils and shocks of newer 2011 - 2021 Toyota Tacoma and rear shocks of newer 2010 - 2021 4Runner. They'll all work better than what you have on there now. Tokico or Bilstein will both work perfectly fine.
Nice job, I have 05 4runner Sport Ed, came X-Reas, I bought 5100 set, I am wondering keeping original size or go to 265/70-17. I would like to have your advise. Thank you
anyone ever compare the ft lbs that different nuts and bolts release at (after they have been confirmed torqued to manufacturer specs when last serviced) Just be interesting to compare their release torque ft lbs compared to the spec torque ft lb after 20,000-30,000 mi of use.
Can you explain not needing the hydronic line again? If they havnt changed suspension components, do the newer shocks just not require a hydronic line?
Newer shocks have everything built in to them. Those lines are just additional stuff that cross connects front & rear shocks to limit the body roll. It’s a great idea in theory but it gets warm out quick and maintenance is pain in the butt and super expensive and quality of the ride is not any better
You can get away without having to drill the frame if you get the right bushings and washer set from Toyota dealer. I just went this route to save time
I have a quick question, don’t you need to see the R or L side in the shocks? I have some but they have a sticker with the L both I don’t know if I could use them for both sides!
Took you’re advice , thank you so much I replaced my shocks and struts so easily , I do have one question , after I was finished I turned my car on and my trac control light , and abs light is on . No check engine . Any recommendations?
Suspension is not connected to traction control system or ABS system in anyway, unless you accidentally damaged a wire for ABS system. That's the first thing I would check
So I have a 2006 4runner sport. If I do like you and put tacoma trd pro bilstine front struts in, then I should get a lift? That's cool. Is the tacoma strut taller than the factory 4runner strut?
Hello, i believe this is DIY but I’m not that savvy when it come to cars. Is there a way you can help me install shocks on 4Runner ? Or recommend me to shop. All my shocks and xreas are depleted and would like to get it in shape this year. I live in the Midwest.
Hey Jay, I would love to help you but I live all the on west coast. Any of your local shop will be able to do it for you. If you are not able to do it yourself or have friend who can help, mechanical shop is the way to go but it will cost a little more
Quick question, So I have a 2004 4Runner with Xres ( 2WD ) can I still do it? Next is I’m finding the Toyota 4Runner back shocks with the # 19 on them not #22 like yours is that the height of the shock?
Yes you can do same conversion on your 2WD and I don't think those numbers matter, those shocks should be the same length. Correct if I'm wrong or if you find different information.
Hello, did it come off TRD 4Runner? Technically it should level it out. Tho springs & struts from Tacomas tend to sit a little higher than springs & struts from 4Runner but it should still level it out nicely, you might have to use 1" spacers in the front.
@@tronixster Thanks for taking your time to response - I believe they came from a TRD - I will follow your directions and keep you posted - happy New Year
Tacoma shocks are different in the back so it has to be 4Runner shocks only. Tacoma is has different suspension setup in the back due to it being a truck
Thank you for replying 1 more ? I have seen some front struts off a tacoma for sale, but they are blue instead of the yellow. Would that make a difference?

Hey Mario, I don't have a reference to any suspension parts but front coils and struts will work from any 2005 to 2022 Tacoma. But I recommend taking off new Tacomas 2017 and up. Just because it's newer and better
Excellent job. Killer deal on the parts. U saved thousands DIY. just add a couple hundred for a 4 wheel alignment...done
I'm glad you love the video and I did go to my buddies shop and got alignment for $100
The rear struts are from 4Runner? Oem?
Also how has the ride changed? Is it more comfortable smoother now or stiffer? How’s the body roll?
Hey Zain, rear struts are from 2016 or 2018 4Runner, OEM. And yes ride is way smoother and super stable on corners. I has been awesome upgrade.
Where did you get that hood scoop. It’s not factory molded but you can barely tell. Closet to stock I’ve seen
Lol most people make fun of it but I like it. I'm not sure where this scoop came from because I bought the car with this hood scoop.
how is the camber? did it went positive? was it corrected by the alignment ?
I have a 07 4runner SR5 what do u recommend for upgrades something simple like u did
What year can I use ? Any help would be appreciated I want to do it myself also
Basically, look for any front coils and shocks of newer 2011 - 2021 Toyota Tacoma and rear shocks of newer 2010 - 2021 4Runner. They'll all work better than what you have on there now. Tokico or Bilstein will both work perfectly fine.
Great video!! Links to the products?! Thanks
Check out this post on OfferUp. This guy has more suspension parts. Check out this item on OfferUp. offerup.co/tT8u65Or9ib
Nice job, I have 05 4runner Sport Ed, came X-Reas, I bought 5100 set, I am wondering keeping original size or go to 265/70-17. I would like to have your advise. Thank you
If you are able I would recommend going with bigger size tires. They look better and you’ll get more clearance.
Buen trabajo 👍
Una pregunta! Nesesito saber que amaltiguadores usas atrás ?? Son de Tacoma tanbien ? Alguien que able español ?
Sorry can't understand
QUESTIONS... any dash lights after removing that suspension? I'm about to pick up a 4Runner same gen and going same route on replacing shocks
Hey man! No dash lights X-reas is not connected to your car's computer in any way. It's a mechanical stand alone system.
need to do the exact same thing to my 4runner (2006) but what models/year of Tacoma and 4runners can I get the parts from?
anyone ever compare the ft lbs that different nuts and bolts release at (after they have been confirmed torqued to manufacturer specs when last serviced) Just be interesting to compare their release torque ft lbs compared to the spec torque ft lb after 20,000-30,000 mi of use.
I’ve never done that or thought about doing that but interesting thought
Thanks Brother. Nice work on the video.
Praise God, always happy to help.
@@tronixster Beautifully said brother. I just bought our 1st gen 4 Toyota to start overlanding. looking forward to it.
@@tronixster thanks!!
Were you able to get alignment back to spec without replacing upper control arms?
Could you have not drilled the frame shock mount and just ground the washer or did it absolutely require drilling the frame?
There’s a procedure you have to perform by grounding out two pins on OBD 2 connector. Great how to vids on UA-cam
4th gen 4runners have a normal front Rake
I'll get rid of it, I promise
QUESTION: did you or anyone who did this end up using a spacer to correct for any side lean? Since the front has more weight?
There shouldn't been any side lean. Also coils from Tacoma are a little taller and will naturally level it out.
So I have a 2006 4runner sport. If I do like you and put tacoma trd pro bilstine front struts in, then I should get a lift? That's cool. Is the tacoma strut taller than the factory 4runner strut?
Yeah that will work out perfect and it will be a direct fit. And Tacoma struts are taller by 1” - 2” depending on the trim
Thx for letting me know!! That's awesome. Your video was awesome as well!
Would 2021 Tacoma off-road TRD bilsteins fit on a 2003 4Runner SR5, no xreas.
Hey man, yes they absolutely would.
Did the 5th Ben rear shocks raise the back end at all? Or did it stay stock height in the back
Rear shocks didn't raise the back end, it stayed and stock height. To raise the back end you'll need different coils for that.
How long did it take you with filming and all
That ?
hey man it took me about four hours with all the filming.
Why didn’t you install the Tacoma rear shocks?
Tacoma rear shocks are not compatible with any 4Runners
Bro just subscribed I’m having the same issue love the video
Praise God this video was helpful. Good luck on doing the same upgrade.
I have 04 4Runner sport RW with x-reas. What is your recommendation to replace something like your? Thanks
Technically you can do exactly the same thing I did but take from struts and springs off RWD tacoma. Everything else should work the same.
@@tronixster any thoughts about use ‘21 4Runner TRD? Thanks
If you are not able to do it yourself or have friend who can help, mechanical shop is the way to go but it will cost a little more
I don't get it. Both the front suspensions looked the same height then how will it lift the vehicle? So strange
Hey Ammar, they are not the same height. Tacoma coils are higher by about inch in the quarter.
Excellent video
Praise God you found this video helpful and thank you for your support
Clicked on top link. Part that came up isnt oem tacoma shock. Are they the same and usable?
Can i do the front strut and coil with just the fj cruiser spring ?
Hi- I have a 2008 4RUNNER SR5 and I got front shocks and coils and rear shocks and springs from a 2020 4Runner - will this work to level my truck?
Hello, did it come off TRD 4Runner? Technically it should level it out. Tho springs & struts from Tacomas tend to sit a little higher than springs & struts from 4Runner but it should still level it out nicely, you might have to use 1" spacers in the front.
@@tronixster Thanks for taking your time to response - I believe they came from a TRD - I will follow your directions and keep you posted - happy New Year
Fantastic job!
Did you run into any issues as far as codes for removing the x reas system ?
No issues with codes. X-reas is fully mechanical and is not connected to the computer in any way.
Best $530 ever spent!!
What year tacomas fit on a 04 runner shocks? All 4
Looks awesome 👌
Praise God! 😁 I hope you'll do the same to your 4Runner
why not bilsteins in the back ?
Awesome job thanks
Praise God, I'm happy you found this video helpful. Really appreciate your support
Can you use the tacoma shocks or do they have to be 4runner?
Tacoma shocks are different in the back so it has to be 4Runner shocks only. Tacoma is has different suspension setup in the back due to it being a truck
Thank you for replying 1 more ? I have seen some front struts off a tacoma for sale, but they are blue instead of the yellow. Would that make a difference?
IF YOU LIVE IN THE NE AREA GOOD LUCK I NEEEDED A JACK HAMMER AND MY LOWER CONTROL ARM WOULD NOT GO DOWN LIKE THAT
I know what you are talking about. I used to own a Jeep from east coast. I had to used tons of penetrating oil and hit up all of my bolts and nuts with the torch. Good luck on the project man
Great video
Praise God you found this video helpful.
Bro what sizes did u use!????
have you noticed any difference in MPG since lifting front end?
Haven't noticed a difference in MPG. It's the same
