Woodturning Boring Logs Into Unique Bowl

  • I have had these Olive wood logs for a while now and have been saving them for something special. This is an amazing wood to turn. Besides for the stunning wood grain, it smells very pleasant and is a joy to work with. A few weeks back my friend Mike Holton posted a video of a bowl he made from Jarrah Burl wood and resin. I loved the shape and just couldn’t get it out of my head when thinking of what to make next. So I asked Mike if he would be okay with me attempting a similar design. He said he would be honored. This is probably my favorite piece I’ve made to date. I really like the unique shape and the contrasting colors of the wood and resin. Unfortunately it is difficult to capture the true beauty of this piece on camera. The resin looks very dark but is actually quite translucent in person. Thank you very much for letting me borrow your design Mike. Much appreciated. And thank you so much for watching. If you are interested in watching Mikes video I will leave a link below. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Outstanding looking piece of work, terrific shape with the wide outer rim so you see more of the wood if something is in the bowl. I also use the rice method to calculate how much resin. Didn’t you have a video posted on your finishing process ? I think you brush it with epoxy and wet sand in between coats ? I may be mistaken or the process is in a build video. Have a great day 👍

    • @squareandlevel

Thanks. I prefer using math to calculate the volume needed, but irregular shaped pieces like this make that difficult. I should have known better and added more to my fudge factor. Lesson learned. I have commented on my finishing process in a previous video, but honestly it is still evolving as I try new things and learn. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

It’s funny you say that because I feel the same way about saving specific pieces for when I’m better at this. I’m slowly starting to just go for it after hearing someone I have a lot of respect for say “it’s only a piece of wood”. I can get more. It not a waste if we are enjoying ourselves doing something productive. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day.

Thank you very much. ( I’m pretty new to turning as well. Roughly 6 months). As far as food safe finishes go I would recommend to do some research. It’s a debated topic and no matter what I say there will be someone who says I’m wrong. That said, I would recommend raw linseed oil or walnut oil followed up with beeswax. They are good option and I personally prefer the natural look and feel they give to the piece. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Do you mind me asking what you are using for the circular part of your molds? It looks like some kind of cardboard, but I just can’t identify what it actually is sir? Love the olive wood. Wish I could get my hands on some, but I am in the Northwest so I work with mostly maple, alder, and walnut. That olive wood is incredible!

My Favorite so far. The olive wood is stunning and the epoxy is great. It has a slight UFO vibe--very cool. Maybe in the future you can use metal gray epoxy for the body of a UFO shape then the lid could be a translucent dome. That would be the coolest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I often wondered how you guys calculate how much resin to make! At first I thought, “ Rice! I’m pretty sure that’s not in the recipe!” Then I figured it’s a mathematical equation you use to figure out the volume to mix. Then when it became a blue-green blob I thought I recognised a blue cake I once baked. It didn’t make near the mess yours did though! I’ll bet it was tastier though, but was gone within a day. Your creation will last for yonks though! (That’s Ozzie for ages!) well done mate! I love the way you work your craft! Very interesting results! ❤️🥣❤️😊🦘🇦🇺 Brilliant job…….yet again!

When I saw you measuring the volume with rice I thought it might be worth a try to fill voids in a piece of wood with a mixture of rice and resin. This could give an interesting structure. But maybe the rice is too brittle and the grains will fly all around the shop when turning.
