Woodturning a Spectacular Split Log Vessel

- Thank you very much to everyone who voted in the poll for the color of this piece. My wife found a Facebook post for free wood in my area. I was able to get a bed full of these Eucalyptus logs. I cut most of them into a variety of bowl blanks, but kept a few logs as well. I specifically did not seal this particular log because I wanted it to crack for this specific design. Unfortunately there are hundreds of Eucalyptus species and I do not know exactly what species this wood is, but it sure is beautiful. The Okinawa green from Eye Candy pigments looks fantastic with the deep pour epoxy from Superclear epoxy. I was also able to use the new flat tool rests from Simple Woodturning Tools for the first time on this piece. They worked amazing and I will definitely be using them more in the future. I really like the way this piece turned out and will likely come back to this design in the future. I rarely like to make anything more than once but this one will be an exception. Thank you for watching and all the amazing comments. You all are awesome! I hope you have a wonderful day!

This is a great video and stunning result! In the past I've watched quite a few of these kinds of videos - which I've greatly enjoyed - but I think you and Olivier Gomis are the only people I've seen use a stabilizing roller device (I think he has used them for these really big pieces). I have seen the consequences in a few videos of having a piece fly off the lathe when held at one end by a mortise or tenon which is horrifying and heart breaking though I guess fortunately infrequent. The device you're using seems genius to me in preventing that. Also, I have never seen the laser guide before - does that help you track the depth/width while gouging the interior? Again, great video!!! 👍
I really like your video

I've seen many pieces of different epoxy resin compositions with wood and I just wanted to say that this particular piece is most probably one of best that I have seen.
Thank You
I'm not one for turning epoxy turnings but I do like how they look and this is awesome and love how you came up with the idea! My hat off too you!!!👏👏👏👍
Great job.
Thanks!
thats really beautiful
Thank you!
Not only is this a beautiful piece of art, but it’s a really well produced and edited video. You were fun to watch in creating this vase, you certainly deserve a subscription from me and many more Scott. I look forward to seeing more of your talent on display.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. It means a lot to me. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day!
Scott
I don't do this hobby, but watching any craftsman at a high level is fantastic. Really beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
Oh bruv,
I want that. I've watched thousands of turning vids, but this one speaks to my soul😅.
Blinding. ✌️
Thank you!!
That's a awesome piece, What kind of hot glue is that? I didn't know hot glue gave you that much time b4 it dried
Thanks! It’s nothing special. Picked it up cheap on amazon. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day.
Scott
Man, allowing a log to split in times past, and not even that long ago, would have resulted in firewood, not a project that turns out so mesmerizing to look at.
That is simply Insane, Beautiful And created in such good taste, You are definitely a master at your art
Beautiful. Love what you do. And that beard is awesome 😃❤️
Thank you 😁
Che bello valorizzare un pezzo di legno altrimenti non utilizzabile se non nel camino.
Quelle fessurazioni, debitamente saturate in resina, ne hanno fatto un'opera d'arte della natura !!!
Holy smokes! That turned out far better than I had expected (and I was expecting a lot from you, friend)
Thank you very much!
.....I like that gut !!! He's got all the fancy hand-tools I would like to have. Truly a masterpiece, brother!
Superbe
Wow! Best wood turning. The color combo and the wavy lip. I'm speechless.
Thank you very much!
such a sympathic and pleasent person, thanks for you nice videos
Thank you for watching! Hope you have a great day.
Scott
Scott is the real deal. He's like that in person too!
Красиво. Редкая ваза, которая понравилась. Последнее время люди не знают, чтобы такого сделать ив результате часто показывают ординарные неинтересные изделия. У вас много красивых!
Keep that outer part, you can cut it up and use it for something equally stunning. :D
Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
Scott
Muy bonito, buen trabajo. Te felicito 👏👏
So cool!
Normally I find resin turning videos boring but you actually made something incredible.
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful result. It grew on me, during the video. Well done!
Thank you! 😊
Holy moly what a statement piece! Amazing well done
Thanks Tom. This was a fun one. Hope you a good day sir.
Scott
Bros beard has moved into it's "Magnificent Era"!
Trim is overdue. Getting a little unwieldy. 😆. Thanks for watching as always sir. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
Превосходно!! Благодарю!!!
That's freekin Awesome.
WOW you trusted that hot glue on the plexiglass to hold while you dropped it in the vac chamber! Love the content!
Mistakes were made. I’ll learn eventually. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott.
It turned out to be a very beautiful product! The master is well done 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 👏👏
Thank you very much!
That turned out gorgeous!
Gorgeous piece.
Would look really cool to do the same or similar design with a transparent smokey resin so that you can see into it
Great idea! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
So what interesting use do you have planned for the discarded shell (6:49 - 6:53)?
Already used some of it. I’m sure I’ll come up with something for the rest. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
This is a very, very nice piece and a great idea. Would you mind if I do the same in the future?
Absolutely! I look forward to seeing your take. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
@squareandlevel thank you very much. I don't know when I will make this vase, but yours is really, really nice. Here in Slovenia, it is a very rainy day, but when I watch your video, I forget that it is a bad day outside 😊😁
WOW!! Simply stunning. Maybe your best yet, sir. It looks like you've inset Malachite stone. Really an elegant piece. All the best, my friend.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott.
Hermoso, muy creativo!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Thank you!
Exquisite like a pure diamond.
All I can say is WOW!!!
That is amazing..

Scott
Whew! Collective sigh of relief that the leak wasn't worse. Great process, production value and beautiful piece.
Thank you very much. Pressure pot is good as new now. Definitely lucky it wasn’t worse. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
Stunning vase Scott! I loved the bandsaw part 😁
Thank you Mike. This is one of those pieces I want to try again with different wood species and colors. Should be pretty easy to cracked split logs. 🤣. Thanks for watching sir. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
Well done my friend. Looks great.
Thank you sir. Much appreciated.
How did you sort out the problem with the leak in the pressure pot?
All good now. Was able to cut out the wood with a multitool and broke the resin with a hammer and steel pipe. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
it gets better and better as the beard grows :)
Great work and awesome craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much!
That is one BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WORK. I ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS. Looking forward to seeing more of your work
Thank you very much! Truly appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Woah... way to turn a hunk of junk into something special! This is a pattern you can do in many variations, none will be alike.
And now I'm wondering what you've done with the piece that was bandsawed off it... too nice to pitch. Lampshade, if nothing else.
Outstanding effort and an excellent result. Keep coming up with the great ideas.
Thank you very much!
I enjoyed seeing all the hard work you put into making this work of art.
Thank you very much!
Love this…….
That is another stunner, love the design you choose. Can't wait to see what you do with those great cutoffs.
Thanks so much!
That is amazing. Great job.
Thank you very much!

That’s absolutely amazing great work.
Thank you very much Jim, as always I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
Just found your channel and that piece is absolutely stunning! My wife can see an alien starfish holding that log. 🙂For a while now i have been thinking about using resin, and although it's quite expensive to buy in the UK, i think the results might be worth the outlay.
Wow
Очень красиво, бесподобно !
Very nice, as always!
Thank you!
Bravo pour cette réalisation 👍 c’est un très gros travail top 👍
Amazing Piece! Thanks for sharing. Further I really like the music in your videos. A hint for the presentation at the end: maybe you could use natural light, I think the colors and texture would be more authentic. Best wishes
Great suggestion! Thank you so much. I hope you have a great day!
Genialne!!!
Stunning piece! 👏👏👏🤩🤩🏴🏴
Thank you!
We have chosen wisely.
Amazingly beautiful and stunning 🤩😍❤️.
Thank you! 😊
If this piece were to show up in a shop, what might the price be?
Unfortunately I cannot answer that question. I have never sold any of the pieces I make. This is my hobby and I enjoy giving the things I make away to friends and family. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
@@squareandlevel That's too bad because I would consider purchasing it.
I didn't know there where glueguns on batterypower!
PS there reason why it leaked.... did the epoxy got to hot perhaps? I mean you use a awful lot in one pour.... and curing epoxy mostly creates heat....
Must be awesome to have the space and so many tools to build stuff yourself...
I don’t think it was because the epoxy got too hot. I’m not 100% sure what happened. I did change hot glue brands and I’m wondering if that had anything to do with it. Regardless the main reason I make molds this way is almost purely for the video and viewer experience. I prefer to use construction concrete footing tubes. I’ve never had an issue with those. Just not very exciting to see. Thank you very much for watching and leaving a question. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
nice work brother.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, and thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Very very cool piece. The green goes so well with the wood color and it looks like a starfish so that really adds to the outcome as well.
Thank you!
Scott
👏👏👏👏👏
I'm not a huge fan of epoxy even though I have used it to make some very nice pieces but in this case it just seems appropriate. Excellent job as always 👏
Thank you!
Masterpiece
Красиво и удачно подобран этот зелеленого оттенка цвет.А изначально был потресканый чурбак.Как вы это видите.
Bravo another wonderful work of art❤😊
Thank you so much 😀
Subscribed! The epoxy+turning craft is amazing to me and your channel does not disappoint. I also really like your video creation style. This particular piece came out amazingly well. Dang, that leak in pressure pot is painful.... sorry you had to deal with that 😣 Now I only wish I could learn to use a lathe while also learning the required common sense to maintain "life an limb" so-to-speak 😂
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment. I really appreciate it. The pressure pot is “good” as new and ready for use. As for wanting to learn there is no better way to do it than just getting started. I’ve only been using a lathe for about 8 months now. I’ve made mistakes and that’s ok. Best way to learn imo. Thank you very much for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Love the epoxy color. Compliments the wood perfectly.
Thank you very much!
That is stunning. Simply awesome.
Thank you very much! Hope you have a good day.
Scott
Not my thing but i can see the quality of your work well done
what a fantastic piece, love your channel! If you don't mind me asking what type of wood was this that you used? Thanks again sir!
Thank you very much! This piece was made from eucalyptus. If you are ever looking for some information on the pieces I make, I try to write fairly detailed descriptions going over wood species, colors, and tools used. Regardless feel free to ask any questions, I try my best to respond to everyone. Thanks again. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
🎉👍🇵🇹
gorgeous work! How did you know green is my favorite color?😁😅 Keep up the good work & thank you for sharing your talent
Thank you! 😊
Have you considered using straps to lower in the mold? They could be used to pull it back out too.
Also, you might use silicon caulk for the seal?
I have done that in the past. Mistakes were made. I’ll eventually learn. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
👍👍👍
Beautiful!!!
just. WOW! Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you very much!
Wow love this
Thank you very much!
OMG, wow, that is spectacular and I’ve never seen anything like that before. I would certainly find a home for that one :-) it truly is amazing what can be made out of essentially scrap wood which goes to show never write off anything.!!!
Magnifique,
Bravo
Thank you
I was confused as to what you were doing with the edge planer at first. That turned out really cool!
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
That came out really cool. Good luck getting the spill out of your pressure pot. And thanks for including links to the tools you use. So many times I see one that I might be interested in but have no idea what it is.
Put item into vacuum first, then pour.
Thanks!
Wow!!! Love it!!!
Thank you!!
I think I recall voting for that green! The look on your face when you saw it leaked, I'm glad it wasn't worse.
Great idea and very well done. Thanks for the inspiration, stay safe.
Thanks, you too!
It looks like you’re making a birthday cake. A very cool wood birthday cake.
i watched a few youtubers celan there pots after the mold broke now they use plastic bags
Just gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
Your process and results just turned out so fantastic, really amazing 🙂
That’s a very nice project! Well done👍
Thank you very much!
Very creative. I have never seen the first tool that you used. What is it?
It’s called the simple scraper from simple woodturning tools. Links in the description. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
I have a lathe just like that
