I get such a positive emotional charge out of seeing clever woodworking tricks like this. What a neat (and material efficient) way to make such a beautiful bowl!
If he used a scroll saw with the table tilted at an angle to part the circular pieces, he might have been able to get a few more levels and therefore a deeper bowl.
Exactly. I love the wonderfully creative projects made with lathes, but always disliked how terribly wasteful the process is. Especially with wood, where the chips can't be recycled.
Sorry you had to admit you were wrong to the wife. I hate when that happens. Haha. Seems to happen when I’m right too tho…. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
I was thinking that at best it’s going to be a plate with a little lip on the edge and a slight dip to the center. But DAAAAAAAAAANNNG was I wrong! I was wronger than wrong! I mean, I just watched him do the impossible, (according to MY brain) and I STILL can’t wrap my head around it! It’s absolutely insane, and beautiful! Everyone in this comment section is giving you a standing ovation!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼well done sir!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼
Wow! I'm still not entirely convinced you didnt use any magic when making this bowl. I'm astonished at how well it turned out, given how skeptical I was at the outset. Beautiful work!
OMG ~ I was subscribed to your channel with my first view ... but this is a masterpiece of technique, precision, imagination ... You, sir, are a true artist!
This is a perfect and absolutely stunning achievement! Thank you for sharing, and thank you for this magnificent video, perfectly demonstrative, without the slightest unnecessary blah... blah... blah... , and with an absolutely delectable musical background. I really enjoyed myself... 😃
I am normally a bigger fan of plates, but when you witness the creation of such an amazing bowl, my hand is forced and I feel compelled to say something. Awesome!
For your first piece, INCREDIBLE! Really enjoy your work and with fans like Mike Holten and the Papa himself, your work hasn't gone unnoticed. Have a piece of mesquite set aside for the same project. Well done, my friend
Incredible work, Scott! Such a great method! I had no idea how you were going to turn that board into a bowl. Turned out beautifully and excellent choice on that tiger maple. Well done!
Woah! I'm not super familiar with woodwork. But I was definitely curious enough to sit and watch how this was done. It took me watching two or three rings to realize the approach. This is super impressive, and the finished bowl looks so seamless. Thank you for sharing, I learned something today.
This is really awesome! So many cool tips a newer wood turner can pick up and this is a great method I can teach to my kids who are learning the craft.
Thank you very much. There is a link in the description to a step by step tutorial by the original creator of this piece if you would like a more in depth explanation of the process. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
This was definitely fun and I look forward to trying out some new designs in the future. I hope yours turn out great. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
I saw this awhile ago on ThePapa1947 and wondered if I would dare try it. Now that I see you have executed the technique I will have to give it a go. Great job, it is beautiful.
That was a really nice video from beginning to end. Good pattern well designed and carefully glued. The bowl looks great! I also really enjoyed your selection of music!!
I used a similar method to make a large bowl, 16” diameter, with Poplar and Padauk. It was fine until I Started putting on the oil finish, and the Padauk bled so bad into the Poplar that it liked like raw salmon. Learning experience. I bought some African Blackwood and tested it first for the bleed…..ended up pairing it with Purpleheart - turned out fantastic!
What did you use to keep the parting tool straight on the angle cut? I've tried to find a commercial version of something that is shown in the video but haven't had any luck.
@@bradgregory2470 I actually made two identical platters and cut cylindrical rings from each to stack up for the bowl construction. I am left with one 13” disk that I do make angled cuts into with a 1/16” parting tool for a different type of stack-up bowl. I fitted a 2 x 2 block onto my tool rest and cut various angles into it to steady my parting tool for 90, 45, 52 and 60 degree cuts.
We did this project in woodshop in High School in 1979... although we used one solid plank of board and used a bandsaw to make the angled cuts. I wonder if my Mom still has it? This one of course looks WAY better than mine! Awesome 🙂
Nice work. I also saw this for the first time on @thepapa1947 channel and want to try it out but I need to get/make a jig to hold the parting tool. I just finished making a bunch of jigs to do my first segmented bowl so this will have to wait a bit. Hopefully my first effort can be as successful as yours!
Thank you! I’m actually making some new jigs at this very moment. This was the easiest thing I’ve made so far. Besides the tool rest it’s very straight forward. Definitely want to try out some different patterns in the future. Thanks for the comment. I hope you have a great day!
very clever and it turned out so beautiful. Kinda reminded me of the American flag waving in the wind. I would love to see you do it again with a red wood white wood and a blue resin piece. great for 4th of July
Also, got another tip for ya... 90% rubbing alcohol removes hot glue like a boss. I know you aren't using much here but on bigger projects. Works really well to release it from wood. Thanks for the inspirational vid.
Very clever way to cust those angles, but they have an attachment called “Ringmaster” that does this too. I’ve got one and it works great but expensive little gizmo. Awesome board to bowl!
Even if this hadn’t turned out to look so fantastic it would still have been a masterclass in abstract planning. A work of art.
I was planning to skip to the end to see the results but I watched the whole thing. Amazing
Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
😂same!
Wasn't exactly sure what he did!!
Had to watch it a second time!
What a fantastic way to prepare a blank. I didn't expect the pattern to line up so well when stacking the rings.
Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day!

Scott
Thank you for doing that in a way that saves wood. I hate seeing people make a huge block of wood and then carve most of it away into the trash
Exactly my thoughts
He can make three bowls out of the three boards he cut too, i think
If he used a scroll saw with the table tilted at an angle to part the circular pieces, he might have been able to get a few more levels and therefore a deeper bowl.
Exactly. I love the wonderfully creative projects made with lathes, but always disliked how terribly wasteful the process is. Especially with wood, where the chips can't be recycled.
Yes, thank you so much. I mean it's not like this stuff just grows on trees... Oh, wait!
I watch A LOT of woodworking videos. this is the first time ive seen something like this. really clever! love to see it brother.
Thank you very much! Appreciate the kind words. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
I was wrong. I told my wife that this video was clickbait and that you can't turn a bowl from a thin flat board. I was wrong, great video!
Sorry you had to admit you were wrong to the wife. I hate when that happens. Haha. Seems to happen when I’m right too tho…. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I mean.. thumbnail is definitely clickbait, but still cool bowl.
@@shivaargula4735haha
That photo made me curious though.
@@TheWorld_2099 Thus the 'Clickbait'.

I hear ya…but he did deliver, so this might be one of those ‘in between’ categories.

I absolutely Love this!!! Such beautiful wood and a Great method! So much less waste of wood that a regularly turned bowl. Just fantastic!!!!
Thank you very much!
I can't believe I doubted any part of the process for even a second. This is the most beautiful bowl I've seen.
Thank you very much
Scott
On the 2nd angled lathe cut I knew what you were up to. Very clever. Very cool.
Seeing the finished result, you can't picture a flat surface at all. I'm Amazed.
Outstanding use of materials and tools too! I wish I had one!
Incredible work!!! Blew my mind for real. Also editing was on point, and love the no talking with the jazz. Really all around amazing work!
Thank you very much. Appreciate you taking the time to spread some positive vibes. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Perfect wood. Perfect tools. Perfect talent. Hell, even perfect music. Perfect. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽
Wow, thank you!

I promise no magic wands were used in this video. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Absolutely beautiful, and tied together with some soothing tones. Perfect combination, congrats on such a stunning piece!

finally a woodturning vid with planning to minimize the waste material
Really cool. The combination of color and the nice random curves makes for a pleasing result. I think I will try that. Thank you.

Nice work, Scott! I was thoroughly mesmerized the whole time.

Artisanal activities have something magic about them.
I like the efficient use of material, the design and the finished product. Great work.

Let's talk about the world's tiniest paint roller
Fantastic handworking and idea. Thanks very much for presenting it in this video.
Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment. I hope you have a great day!
I’ve seen the bowl making technique before, but never that wood puzzle technique. Absolutely brilliant! 👏
Thank you very much!
Your sawdust is prettier than most of my finished pieces. I am in awe of your skill and artistry!
I was getting tired of turning bowls now this adds a whole new dimension thankyou
Already knew this technique and it's amazing, just as the end result.
The pattern is beautiful. The red wood just pop's like crazy.
Congratulations.
What an absolute beautiful video and the resultant artwork was magnificent!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic bowl with almost zero waste. Excellent job!
Beautiful piece, Scott. Makes me wish I had been more adventurous with my bandsaw and lathe back in the day.
Thank you Glenn. And thanks for helping out with the new camera. I really appreciate your help. I’ll get it figured out eventually. Have a great day!
I may not know a thing about woodworking, but I can tell he does!! What a joy to watch.
Absolutely beautiful Scott! Compulsive viewing, I could not take my eyes off the screen, all the best, Mike
Thanks Mike! Have a good one!

You've got some really nice fixturing there.
I had to keep rewinding to try to figure out how it worked for some reason. Awesome job.
That’s absolutely amazing it turned out amazing I also lost the blank and how you made it. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much 😊
Wow that bowl is awesome.

Fantastically clever, and great execution!

Such a genius idea! I love it!
Very nice, I make a lot of bowls from a board and have found I get better rings using the scroll saw to cut them out.
It looks awesome!! Such a clever technique!! 👏👏👏👏❤️
Glad you like it! Hope you have a great day.

That was awesome watching you make that bowl! Also, the musics not bad either. Good work!
Thank you very much!

Beautiful piece and interesting process. I’ve only attempted small projects. Full View and Like 👍
Thank you very much
wow, that is truly creative.
Just when I thought I had all the battery-operated tools I needed, I see you with the glue gun. I have to have one now.
Beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for showing what finish you used!!!
