Yes, I don't know if everyone sees this, but they're singing this joyous, optimistic song while looking like it's the end of the world. So true - their heyday of hits was a little under two years. But what a catalogue of hits and at least 2 original albums ( not counting the many greatest hits compilations that came after they broke up).
It breaks my heart to remember how much pure joy this band gave to so many people and yet their own lives were so broken. Loved them then and I still do today!
So true ... So so long ago. California was a dream state and now it's unrecognizable. And everyone is just running away without even trying to make a difference
Momma Michelles beautiful soprano never is mentioned but she was a wonderful singer and really held her own in a band that had two pretty overwhelming personalities.
The little interactions between Denny and Cass are so lovely. If you watch, he keeps looking at her hoping she'll look back and when she does he's so chuffed.
If I remember correctly, I think Cass had a crush on Denny...Denny slept with Michelle...and John (as you can tell in his face in this video) was depressed. I think Denny looked at Cass in a platonic sense, and the band was on thin ice at this point...they were trying to look like the "happy group." Far from it.
@@groovymovie84 Yep, and the 'crush' was there before they broke from their previous band. Deny was brought into the now 'New Journeymen' while Cass languished I think? But he did NOT forget Cass and her talent and eventually persuaded John and Michelle to meet her, John didn't like Cass but basically was outvoted.. . . Then BAMN! 🎆 ✨ 🎆 ✨ The magic happened! they had a complete harmonic sound that rivaled the Vienna Boys Choir 🤣, but the sound was bold, new, modern, it was about freedom, happiness, love for all, the joy of living. . . Funny they sang like hippies but apart from Cass they danced like 'Mods' . . . quite reserved. I don't know why Denny and Cass never hooked up, I know later Denny has said he regretted not allowing h/self to get involved with Cass . . .she craved it and it may have saved her BUT that is NOT a burden one can put on Denny, the chemistry was there but the appetite for risk was not. To Denny's' credit one has to note that MANY men would've used Cass for sex, and she knew this., so she loved him more. 😭 . . . now? does size matter? . . . Maybe . . sigh!
Before that, it was pure genius that whomever used this song in Bad Times at the El Royale during one of the scenes with Chris Hemsworth's Manson-like character.
Absolutely my favorite song among many favorites by the wonderful Mamas and Papas. Barely beats out "Look Through My Window," which barely beats out "No Salt On Her Tail." I was in my young 20s when the group enchanted me, but they still are in my top 3now that I'm 80.
I went to NYU (in NYC) as a freshman in 1975 and my dorm room looked out on the same clock that was still stuck at 12:30! Always made me think of the song. I had no idea what Southern California canyons were like though.

I’m reading Cass’ story by her daughter, Owen. It’s wonderful! It covers Cass, her years with The Mamas and the Pappas, and years following when she was a solo. It also covers Owen’s years growing up years. She was only 7 when her Mom died. 😢 So, while I read, I’m listening to ALL the beautiful M&P’s music and Cass’s music. music. I’d forgotten how much I loved it and missed hearing it. Cass, you laid down a great foundation for your daughter. Miss you so much!
Cass and Michelle's voices together have that rare quality that creates a sum bigger than their individual parts. You can really hear it on the second syllable of "canyon" in the chorus....ca..an...yuuuun. Brilliant. And Denny had such a great voice. Only Michelle left now....
Yes. Thank you! Sometimes it seems like people are afraid to praise the blonde bimbo's part in this but the fact is she deserved to be on that stage with the rest of them because she really was that good and I think it was Michelle's voice that gave this group that distinctive blend.
@chrishewitt9721 I agree! I've always thought the same thing - the last syllable of Can-yon is sublime. Their voices mix so well. Unfortunately, I think most people hear Michelle's soprano voicings and think Mama Cass is the high soprano. Mama Cass had an amazing voice, but I think Michelle wasn't given the credit she was due for her beautiful and difficult high harmonies.
Can't say that. It's a shared honor. All those Phil Spector ladies early on. Then Grace Slick for sure. And Sandy Denny and Dusty Springfield in England and so as not to slight the French, the incomparable Edith Piaf.
Good lord, such incredible compositions. “They don’t write em’ like that anymore.” It was a short lived band with huge hits and immediate success. These songs still touch my soul today. Remember listening to them on a tiny transistor radio in the late 60’s -70’s. Turbulent and controversial as they may have been, thank God for Mr.Phillip’s vision and song writing and those glorious voices. Rest In Peace 🕯 Cass, John , Denny.
Let's not forget John also helped plan and organize Monterey Pop Festival, the slightly forgotten precursor to Woodstock in 1967, which kicked off the breakthroughs of Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Canned Heat, the Who and Jimi.
@@whoopsie890 I lived through those years and things were different to some degree. People have always been people, no matter how far you go back in time. Some that were sexual perverts were no different in the 50's, 60's, 70's, or any time. I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's. There was the same types of people as now that hasn't changed. The sexual revolution and "free love" was more a male thing to get all the sex whenever and from whoever they wanted. I am not saying some girls didn't take part, but most of the girls I knew were no different than now and just wanted one reliable guy. I don't think there was anymore actual drug use in the 60's than in the 40' s, 50's, or 70's and later. There was more public use of pot, and in 1967 with the start of the hippies in Haight- Ashbury in San Francisco the open use of LSD to get more connected to God. Until then people had drug problems, or habits but it wasn't out in the open. I believe the generation of the 60's was more vocal and wanted change and therefore drew attention to things that already existed. I do agree that many experimented with drugs and sex during this time, but overall I would go back in a second. It is true there are more people now who are divided because of political affiliations and many are angry and own assault style rifles with large capacity magazines and drums. People on both sides have been trained to see other Americans that don't see eye to eye with them as the enemy and give them no mercy. I remember preachers in the late 50's and early 60's pounding their fists on their pulpits and saying rock and roll music is from the devil and would destroy this country. I believe music is universal and can speak to the heart and soul. If this country is destroyed it will be from inside and this country. And her own citizens will destroy her. Please stay safe everyone.
The fact that these *four voices* sound like *a single voice* just gives me chills every time I listen to them, and I grew up on their songs. They're one of my mum's absolute favourite bands- she grew up on their music, it seemed only right that I did too.

Hands down, Cass had THE voice in that outfit. She was a great voice I never really appreciated until recently when I stumbled on her duet with the other golden throat John Denver singing Leaving on a Jet Plane. Worth looking up. Oh well, we still have Keith Richards.
I remember hearing this song and it wasn't till after I read 'Helter Skelter' that I felt the song was a fore-shadowing of bad things to come to a particular canyon in LA. The murders occurred around 12:30am, the killers were young girls and "sounds" bounced in all directions...neighbors recalled that they heard screams and gunshots but couldn't tell from which way they were coming from...fragmented. Just eerie. The song becomes very deep.
What an intense memory! Tarantino picked up on all these vibes in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," where he uses this song to particularly chilling effect!
@@dr.treddell you need to see the made-for-TV movie from 1976 called ‘Helter Skelter.’ The most realistic recreation being only 6 years after the crimes. Steve Railsback was incredibly convincing as Manson.
As a longtime fan of the Ms&Ps, I've always been impressed by Joe Osborn's bass playing. Here it's just tremendous. Using a pick, he gets a kind of frenetic fluttering in the verse, playing double time to the beat. Then on the chorus, he digs in deep and powerful. Like most of the Wrecking Crew, he was invisible to the more casual fans...but the stars knew the musicians who made them sound great. (Which is taking nothing away from the Ms&Ps magnificent vocal prowess or John Phillips & Lou Adler's inventive arrangements.)
Totally agree...I realize they were 'singing' to a backing track, but even the vocals here sounded 'not quite live' if you know what i mean...not lip-synching...I don't think Sullivan allowed that, but I didn't hear Cass' voice that clearly, and John was off mic, and it seemed to stop suddenly just as Cass was about to do that background refrain .......could be wrong.......

The age of beautiful lyrics and harmony.
I’m soooo glad I was born in the early 1950’s and experienced RnR in the late 50’s, 60’s and 1970’s.
I’m truly jealous
And beautiful people, without metal in their faces and covered in ink
This is actually their best song
Agreed!
No way! Thumbs down!
Top 5 for me
"Got a feeling" is also great.
Yes!
Momma Michelles beautiful soprano never is mentioned but she was a wonderful singer and really held her own in a band that had two pretty overwhelming personalities.
Who were the two “pretty overwhelming personalities”?
The little interactions between Denny and Cass are so lovely. If you watch, he keeps looking at her hoping she'll look back and when she does he's so chuffed.
If I remember correctly, I think Cass had a crush on Denny...Denny slept with Michelle...and John (as you can tell in his face in this video) was depressed. I think Denny looked at Cass in a platonic sense, and the band was on thin ice at this point...they were trying to look like the "happy group." Far from it.
I'm glad you pointed this out. Very true.
@@groovymovie84 True. But it’s sad because Denny knew Cass loved him; she wanted to marry him.
Think you got your facts a bit mixed up there..😉
@@groovymovie84 Yep, and the 'crush' was there before they broke from their previous band. Deny was brought into the now 'New Journeymen' while Cass languished I think? But he did NOT forget Cass and her talent and eventually persuaded John and Michelle to meet her, John didn't like Cass but basically was outvoted.. . . Then BAMN! 🎆 ✨ 🎆 ✨
The magic happened! they had a complete harmonic sound that rivaled the Vienna Boys Choir 🤣, but the sound was bold, new, modern, it was about freedom, happiness, love for all, the joy of living. .
😭 . . . now? does size matter? . . . Maybe . . sigh!
what a beautiful and haunting song. great harmonies too
I agree completely. It feels like it SHOULD be a happy song somehow, but it has such a melancholy undercurrent! Amazing song.

That was back in the days when Sunday night was SUNDAY NIGHT!
Pure genius that Quentin Tarantino used this song during the Manson Family scent at the climax of "Once upon a time in Hollywood."

Indeed. The Everly Brothers created that similar magic with their harmonizing.
Denny the canadian with his hockeyplayer look
Yes.
Every young man in the canyon fantasized about Michelle Phillips. I still do.

It was a short lived band with huge hits and immediate success. These songs still touch my soul today. Remember listening to them on a tiny transistor radio in the late 60’s -70’s.

Cass, John , Denny.
Let's not forget John also helped plan and organize Monterey Pop Festival, the slightly forgotten precursor to Woodstock in 1967, which kicked off the breakthroughs of Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Canned Heat, the Who and Jimi.
Clearly a sleeper and a diamond in the ruff. One of their best songs in my opinion. A hidden gem.
Their best song. It's an underrated masterpiece.
Let's admit it, in 2020 this song is an elegy for the beauty and gentleness of America that once was and is no more. But it can be found again!!!
But it's just an act. All these people are drug and sex fiends.
Yeah what a reminder.. Phillips was having sex with his daughter for 10 years for God's sake. Do not be fooled by appearances.

Charlie and his bus entourage were supposedly a fixture at Cass's pad. Folger lived just across the street.

Wow eerie.
Thank you for that excellent review of the bass player. I bet you like the movies Laurel Canyon and Echo in the Canyon. 🎶🎵
Osborn is a wonderful bass player; Larry Knechtel in keyboards is great too
Totally agree...I realize they were 'singing' to a backing track, but even the vocals here sounded 'not quite live' if you know what i mean...not lip-synching...I don't think Sullivan allowed that, but I didn't hear Cass' voice that clearly, and John was off mic, and it seemed to stop suddenly just as Cass was about to do that background refrain .......could be wrong.......
