    No matter what color hair she wore, no matter what style, no matter what she was wearing, no make-up, black and white, etc. Michelle Phillips for a period of 20 years was the most beautiful female I ever saw.

      When you're only an eleven year-old boy, and you couldn't take your eyes off of her, you know Michelle definitely had the "it" factor. She was stunning! They were great musicians, but I never missed them on TV because of Michelle.

    This place they were in was called a "free store." Hippies in San Francisco would donate stuff like clothes, everything, and you could take anything you wanted for free. It was to help people who just got into town and didn't have anything.

    My favorite part of the song is at 2:44, when Denny Doherty sings the line beforehand and at 2:47 the entire band sings the line. According to legend, it was a mistake and Lou Adler, the producer, kept it in to give it an original sound. It is indeed a very classic record and one my favorite recordings.

    • @tjames9698
      @tjames9698 2 роки тому +8

      It absolutely was a mistake. The only ones to solve this were the Beatles. McCartney said that the second they heard Denny come in, they said “That was a mistake.” Everyone loved it so much they left it in. Awesome choice!!!!!!

      that mistake and the backing vocals in the final chorus are what really put the song over the top for me. it's like the character in the song, probably written as denny himself, has gone through this cycle so many times he has to start, stop, consider, and then carry on anyway.

    I think we're the first generation to be able to look back at our actual lives in video. One of the mainstays of the 60s was the music. It was an integral part of all our lives. We saw what other people were doing and we were inspired. It just exploded from 1967 to 1970 when it ended at Kent State University, which I was at. We were in California in the 60s and all over, in the midwest, east, south. People were kind and innocent in a way. Pot smoking was a really liberating experience, a new way to look at things. When LSD started being widely used we slipped into a cosmic consciousness that has never left me to this day. I still believe in LOVE, the saving grace of our society. The Mamas and Papas were one of the first groups to really get on people's wavelengths.

    The Mamas and Papas were the real thing that so many other groups wanted to emulate at the time. Real hippies who made it big but did not compromise their values or lifestyles.They were loved by so many other contemporary pop groups of their day and ending up organizing and inviting the best groups and budding talents of the time in what may have been the greatest pop-rock festival of all to come and every one thereafter to live up to - Monterrey Pop festival '67. Their soaring pop-rock-folk harmonies raised the bar like the Beatles did in their time to such a high level. You could pick almost every song they recorded and find the quality of musicianship, production, recording and harmonies brilliant and spellbinding. There will never be another Cass Elliot.

    On this day in 1966 {June 26th} "I Saw Her Again" by the Mamas and the Papas entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #53; and on July 24th, 1966 it peaked at #5 {for 1 week} and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100...
    And on August 8th, 1966 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart...
    Between 1966 and 1972 the quartet had fifteen Top 100 records; six made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Monday, Monday" for 3 weeks in 1966...
    They just miss having a second #1 when "Dedicated To The One I Love" peaked at #2 for 3 weeks in 1967...
    Sadly, three of the four members have passed away;Cass Elliot {1941 - 1974}, John Phillips {1935 - 2001}, Denny Doherty {1940 - 2007}, and Michelle Phillips, born Holly Michelle Gilliam, celebrated her 70th birthday twenty-two days ago on June 4th, 2014...

    The Mamas and the Papas gave us so many memories. I hope future generations will see, hear, feel and have the great music we did. But then, nothing can top this.

      But to one discerning listener named Paul McCartney the lyric’s accidental nature was obvious. “No one is that clever”, he’s reported to have said.

      Lou Adler kept it in the final cut.* * "Go Where You Wanna Go" by Matt Greenwald.

      @@Gallerygod That's what I heard, too. It's not a false start, it's an engineer's minor lapse during the mixing stage that Adler liked so much he kept it in. Denny was already in trouble with John, now the producer was making him look bad, too.

    Whatever happened to the art of songwriting? There was a time when it was everything.....Music of this caliber is still being played regularly almost 50 years later. NOTHING from the last 10 years will be being played 50 years from now. I feel privileged to have lived through this era and experienced all of this when it was new....

      I liked that bit too, but it's easy to figure out how they did it -- they yanked the hat off with a piece of string, then ran the film backwards. But it's a charming bit!

    I've loved The Mamas and the Papas since I 1st heard them on the radio in the 60's. Mama Cass Elliot is an inspiration to me forever! I listen to Cass Elliot's music and sing & dance with her still! I love all of them and feel so sad knowing she and the guys are no longer with us. Cass singing those romantic songs made her the hit record's & her fab voice on the songs made the whole group perfect harmony! When I play their music my hubby will come out and sing-along with them, pretty good for old married couple. We love Cass Elliot & truly think everyone is beautiful in their own way. RIP Cass, sing like an angel.

    This song should be cited as an example of how to construct the perfect pop tune. Everything about it is brilliant--the harmonies, the melody, everything. The Mamas and the Papas created some of the finest tunes of all time. It almost makes me weep wishing there was more music like this.

      It could only last a few years. People are not aware how they fused their folk roots with high level production rock. The vibration was so high it was naturally limited over time. When it was happening, nothing finer.

    • @DC-js4gk
      @DC-js4gk 6 років тому

      @@walterpewen7903 Truly great observation here. Lou Adler Wrecking Crew how could you go wrong really. Their other legacy is of course Monterey. Cass lives on John went and screwed up. I'm interested in hearing their folk stuff now. Not that Mighty Wind stuff I hope. Joni Mitchell has a cringeworthy vid out there interesting only for its historical worth and her early beauty

      You forgot the early vocal at the key change. An accident left in that works perfectly. Adds that frisson of excitement in a new illicit relationship. Perfection

      terrible, knew it was a mistake the moment I first heard it. The personal love of a group doesnt extend to poor quality performance standards to save a buck . Betcha it was hotly contested and rightly so . as well as the rest of the orchestration horrendous background arrangement . The song doesnt have a clue what or where it is .
