Welcome to the official UA-cam channel of The Monkees, home of 60s chart-topping hits “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as multi-platinum, #1 albums ‘The Monkees,’ ‘More of the Monkees,’ ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.’
Monkee-mania began in Los Angeles in 1965 when Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones were cast in the eponymous television series about a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The quartet brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their resulting music. By the time the series aired its final episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had sold 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles. Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

It’s sad that Micky is the last one remaining, but it also warms heart that he is still here to keep the memories of his bandmates alive.
My amazing wife Jeannie passed away this morning. This was her favorite song since she was a young girl. Off course I had to come here. Love you always Baby Bird.
I am so sorry for your loss, and I am pleased you found this song - treasure memories this was my number one song in Karaoke, and i could nail this and won prizes .. My prayers to you and your family and to Jeannie, rip...
Bless you and may your sweet memories of Jeannie lift you up and sustain you Mark, music can be a powerful healer ❤

RIP Micheal Nesmith. Believe it or not, back in the 80s they were still showing reruns of the Monkees on Saturday mornings after cartoons. What a treat. Kids who stream will never understand nor the satisfaction of Saturday mornings.
Yep. RIP Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones. God bless you, Micky Dolenz. I also remember Saturday mornings watching 'The Monkees' in the early 80's reruns. Heck of a theme tune.
I also remember watching a couple of the reruns in the late 70’s (my cartoon age).
Now I know I'm an old-timer. I watched the in the 70s.
Yeah I was one of those lucky kids to have watched the monkees after Saturday morning cartoons.
I saw reruns as a teenager in the 2010's thanks to channel 26. Their show and music will always have a special place in my heart.
I been a fan since 1966. I actually CRIED when Davy passed. Same with Peter.I didn't want The Monkees to get old, I wanted them to stay just like they are in this video!
Yes! I used to watch their tv show with my siblings, laughing our butts off. Good times!

RIP Michael Nesmith you’ll never be forgotten.
Michael, Peter, and Davy. Poor Mickey
@@robertolmstead1346 yep
Thought for a second you said "Forever forgotten".
*WHAT!?!?* *'Wool Cap Mike' is gone?*
*I didn't know*
( *Like Lennon said in '70 "Don't worry over us, we're alright and so are you and everything you liked of the 'Beatles' is still here, all the records and the films and all that will still be around...we gave you fans the best we had for years and years and now it's time for a long rest and none of you would like to hear and see us at forty or something..."* )
__________
*How wrong he was and didn't know it!*
__________
* 'The Monkees' will live-on long after all the original fans are gone, and that wouldn't be true unless there was real talent and chemistry involved between them, because although a camera may not 'tell the truth of things'...it doesn't 'lie' either*
*WE know the difference between 'fake' and 'real' and what we saw and heard from the 'American Fab Four' was real even if it was never intended to be*
__________
*I saw an interview with Nesmith here on 'Tube and he talked about Peter Tork and how Mike seemed to just 'always not quite right' and "Not the friend I should've been" with Peter in being 'not enemies but not close the way we should have been' and that when an assistant told him where he working said "I just heard that Peter has died" it felt "Like I was kicked in the guts and my heart stopped because I never got the the chance to tell him I loved him and didn't know it and now it's too late to even say goodbye to him*
( *Mike looked like he going to burst into tears right on camera and trying hard not to* )
__________
*I have a friend 'Leon' that I knew from Kindergarten all the way to 7th. grade and we were always 'pals' but what I didn't realize was how poor he was...I had no real concept of what it meant to not have any money in a pocket for a snack or matinee movies or a bag of candy*
*My family was not 'rich' at all but there was always money for me to have for lunch at school and for 'after' and I always got 'movie money' at least twice a month and Leon had none of that and the 'little house' he and his mom lived-in would be considered 'cheap' and 'poor' even in the late '50's thru the '60's in Dearborn, Mi.*
*How I wish I could see him now after more than fifty-years have passed, and tell him "I'm sorry for not being a better friend than I was but I just didn't know any better and now that I know it makes my heart hurt that I wasn't as good to you as you were to me and I'M SORRY*
( *We moved from Dearborn to Las Vegas in early '68 and I never even thought to say 'Goodbye' to him and get his address so I could write to him or maybe call sometimes* )
*WHAT AN A-HOLE I WAS TO HIM and I still don't understand 'Why?'*
RIP to a great musician & entertainer
Ah the innocent days . Wish we could go back to this .
Innocent!!?? I don`t know where you were in the late 60`s, but

@@michaellorenzen8200 You make a great point. I bet there is a bit more , and more ugly reasons also. The teens and 21-25`s now are into nothing but digitized rep/hip hop and have no attention span because of the tach. you speak of. They react to these old tunes(check out reaction vids) and take rock lyrics literally , not understanding analogies or poetic license. If they hear "my baby blue", they think it means "oh, he`s talking about his new child with blue eyes", not a reference to a girlfriend he is singing about. Not the best example, but ya get my meaning.
Keep believing in daydreams.

Regardless of if the Monkees wrote their own tunes or not - or played their own instruments or not - this tune can automatically make one feel good. A classic for all time this song, not just a '60s classic. Thank you to all the Monkees.

Na minha adolescência eles eram minha paixão amava está série 😭
I had the same exact experience in America at a dive bar in Illinois to the song Just a Friend by Biz Markie lolol.
This song is 2 minutes and 46 seconds of pure joy. None of today's songs can match its melody, lyrics and hook.
That's because writing music has become a lost art. Computer programs do the writing now based on an algorithm of what people supposedly want. This is why there has not been a popular song with a key change since 2002. They no longer know how to write a proper melody and don't understand how to use key changes and time changes to enhance and color the mood(s) of a song. That is what's missing from modern music. It reminds me of the Bowie / Ronson collaboration. Bowie wrote the songs on guitar and brought a very crude and basic structure to Ronson who then molded that song into the tunes we know and love. Ronson created the arrangements, key changes and time shifts. That was all 100% Ronson.
Couldn’t agree more. ❤

Good words
Two years ago my wife went into hospital for a major operation. I dropped her off there, made sure she was checked into her ward and left as she was taken down into theatre.
I got in my car, turned on the radio and as I drove away from the hospital this song came on. I broke down in tears and had to pull the car over. You see, her late Mum was called Jean and as youngsters they used to sing this to her "Cheer up sleepy Jean". To me this meant her Mum was watching over her and the worry drained away from me and I just knew for certain that she was going to be ok.
Sure enough after a nine hour operation she pulled through and is now fine. I have always loved this song but even more so now.
Daily I give my thanks to the wonderful surgical team, her Mum Jean and Davy Jones.

The Monkees may have been a manufactured band, but they were good. Like, really really really really good.
+Gideon H. The Beetles were manufactured as well.
*****
They had manager didn't they? They obviously worked on their image. You know most people say the Beatles were simply not very good live. They were mostly a studio band. Not saying they didn't have some creative stuff going on. But live they didn't deliver. The Monkees were more talented performance wise.
+Meade Skelton you do know as the beatles grew they experientented more in the studio, making they're music more creative. a lot of those sounds are hard to create live. also it would be hard to judge how good the beatles sounds when thousands of girls are screaming at tops of they're lungs
Richard Lynch
"Creative". Um okay. I don't think repeating "number 9 a thousand times over a bass guitar is very creative, but I guess that's just me. Performance art is creativity in of itself. The Monkees had it. Elvis had it. Its magic. The Beatles didn't have it.

Finally, it’s hard to grasp that it’s been nearly 60 years since they burst onto the scene. Sad that they have passed away, one by one in recent years.
Thank you for this magic
We were all young once and the lucky few remain young forever in our hearts. R.I.P. Peter Tork and thank you for the happy music memories.
Yes, we were all young once! Miss those days!
George Bernard Shaw once said "YOU DON'T STOP PLAYING BECAUSE YOU GROW OLD; YOU GROW OLD BECAUSE YOU STOP PLAYING " I always enjoyed listening to the MONKEYS they were a good group to listen to, saw them once in long beach cali and that was a lot of fun, they were so funny, they were one of the best. R.I.P. Davy and Peter
I am 65, listening and singing with him allready third time in a roll, and crying like baby, tears are falling like waterfall bringing all fhe memories from those days of my youth with diferent music, diferent life philisophy snd emotions.❤
Hey madam/sir, I'm Gen X (1973) and I vaguely remember seeing some of The Monkeys' shows on re-run channels, and I just loved them. I'm re-visiting some of their songs and remembering their own magic. They are/were really talented for their time, and I'm glad they are still people from your generation reveling in their music, still. Cheers :)
@@rhequiemI was born in 73' too. I remember them on TV.
64 here… and still loving it!❤
🤗🥰 I understand completely ❤🩹💖
I’m right there with you Marina, I was born in ‘71 and I loved The Monkees through reruns of their TV show. This song always makes me feel good, brings me back to the late 70’s. Where has the time gone to…?

Better music, times, and the country for sure❤❤❤
Lyrics
Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring
But six rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?
You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good time starts and end
Without dollar one to spend
But how much, baby, do we really need?
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean
To a day...
Thank you for part of the soundtrack of our youth..
I wish I could understand the meaning of the words of songs.
My absolute favorite song of the Monkees! Their music was and is so much fun to listen to!
I know mine too! I was three years old whent his came on and my brother was 12 and I would sit in front of the tv and say "Mike! Mike!" I STILL love Mike Nesmith- he wrote to me and sent me signed gifts a few times ove the years he was an absolute love, for sure! I treasure my letter from him! One of my first images I think of from that age of three was their legs walking intertwined like that! :P! I met Peter Tork in 1980 on Micky's brithday at the Playboy club in NJ- OH MY GOD I was toast - 26 French kisses he gave me- we were together like three hours- OH, I was just mezmerized by him! My mother was too- she said he was so intelligent and charismatic- he WAS too! His voice in my ear gave me chills- I will never forget the way he said my name, ohhhhhhh talk about swoon! He is tall too! I was 16 :) what a way to learn how to French Kiss! i didn't even have a boyfriend- never kissed a boy, util Peter WWOWOWOWO! Theh funny thing was, I said to my mother the next day that I didn'tknow why he was pressing my thigh with his knee-- she siad, "OH MY GOD! THAT WASN"T HIS KNEE!!!!"Kimberly
Check out Mickey making wacky faces at Davey Jones in the beginning of the song right after Davey stands up. I cannot help but laughing every time. Dolenz was and still is funny as hell!!
And this was the song that many other artists rejected. Even David Jones didn't want to sing it. But it became one of their 3 number one world wide hits. Go figure.
@@sidecarmisanthrope5927 I don`t think you were talking to me, but your comment came to my not. bell. I never knew anything about the backstory, if you will, on D.B., but it sounds like most Monkees tunes being brushed off with discain by the guys because they wanted to do their own material..sorry for misspell on disdain. Looking back with the mind of an adult and musician, the boys were really given a ticket to stardom and had a fuckton of good songs to work with. I still love some old Monkees tunes but they were just that; boys. Naive boys without a clue about the industry.

I miss all of you, The Monkees!
Yikes you scared me. Micky's still here!
I grew up in the 60's this song reminds me of such innocent times with my family and playing old 45's it also brings a tear to my eye when i remember all the people who have passed who use to sing along to the this classic song and the other Monkess Hits. Great Memories never to be forgotten.
People are still singing along to this song. The new generations are discovering this music and loving it.
The Monkees were a highly effective and successful group. They worked together seamlessly to create music and entertainment that captured the hearts of many fans. Their collective talents and personalities complemented each other, resulting in a synergy that allowed them to achieve great heights of fame and popularity. Whether on stage or in the studio, the Monkees exhibited a level of teamwork and collaboration that set them apart from other musical groups of their time. Overall, the Monkees were a prime example of what can be accomplished when a group of individuals come together to achieve a common goal.
But their downfall happened when they wantedto do it ALL THEIR OWN WAY, the downfall was very quick! cheers
Lovely comment ❤yes it's true these were 4 totally unique individuals, but together they created something that will last forever. There will never be another Monkees 😢🌌👼🕉️
Granted, when they first started out they were the "Pre Fab Four" just doing a TV show. But they were all individually talented guys in their own right. One came from British theater, another cane from New York's infamous folk scene, another was a child Movie Star and the last was writer who went on to create MTV. When they recorded Headquaters, tthey proved to the people who in the beginning would't let record their own stuff that they were the Real Deal.
Today, I have tears in my eyes listening to this.... just as I did when Peter passed in 2019..... you’ll be missed, mike.... so so much along with Peter and Davy. Thank you for the music, memories and happiness 💕
What a great lost we miss you and the memories still remains i love your songs
You sound like a wonderful person, Katie. Be well!
I’m 68 yrs. old and absolutely loved the Monkees. I was 11yrs. old when the show started and never one. I always said Davy Jones was my first boyfriend, until I found out he was married and had a daughter. I was just crushed !
Awe ❤❤
Oh cheer up sleepy Michelle. Look, he was only 3ft11in. Feel better now?
Loved watching these guys! RIP Peter Tork :(
And Davy Jones

🌍 Odd how they died ALMOST 7 years to the day.
Don't forget Mickey
@@stanleywilliams6110 Micky is still alive
@@SUGAR_XYLER It is weird isn't it? I always considered seven to be a magical number in some way.
Their best song. I STILL get goosebumps when I hear it.
By far their best song
Absolutely Agree !
Pleasent Valley Sunday!
Me too
I will never stop listening to Davy singing this song! My favorite since I was a small one 😊
Love this song. I grew up watching The Monkees on television. What a beautiful time it was!
Yes, they could sing, act, and nothing violent or political on the show.
Nothing on like that any longer.
The unmistakable voice of Davy Jones
Amazing!!!
👍 nice 👍👏😃😅😂
He could keep a beat, too.
Wasn't he wonderful...? And beyond cute!
He was so cute
Here after Peter's death. Him and Davy are together now. RIP ♥️♥️♥️
He and Davy . . .
So sad. He was my fave! ❤️❤️❤️😢
Strange how we are reminded of our youth, when one of your youth heroes dies.....

My mum's name is Jean and this is her song! Unfortunately, she now has dementia so this makes me sad/happy
LOVE YOU MUM XXXX
I played this not long ago and the response from my mom was unexpected. She got a big smile on her face and said “Awww the Monkees! Reminds of when I was a little girl.” She’s pushing 70. So great to hear songs from your youth and it brings back good memories.
It was from my mom’s childhood. It was from mine from the Monkee’s reruns. It’s famous again today. You can’t keep a great song down!
Classic song. 🤙🏼
I will embrace 72 on 4/30 and I still love love this Davy Jones piece . . . I loved Davy.
I'm 68, never missed their show.
60's rule.
We can never go back, except in our memories....
@AnitaMariaWhite Felicidades por tus 72 aniversario🎂🍾🎉desde Mexico😮🥳
Nice story.
63 now and The Monkeys was my first album. My girlfriends and I were banished to the backyard with the record player because we sang every song at the top of our lungs, over and over and over!!! Worth it!! 🥰🥰
Indeed... Me too...
Girl that sounds like so much fun. I wish I had been there to join you. 😄
Me 65 love then
You lived in good times
♥ This is my all time favorite Monkees song.
I saw Davy Jones at a concert and he came down to the audience to give ME a high five - but some lady jumped in front of me - and that scared him away.
I was THIS close to greatness
🥲
they were part of my childhood. their music and their tv show. i miss those days. 🐒
Couldn't agree more. Wonderful memories
Never heard this song before my auntie Jeans funeral, it was her song as her coffin was carried, and it was so beautiful. The lyric ''Cheer up sleepy Jean'' will always get me, that was the only lyric I comprehended at her funeral, and every time I listen to this song it reminds me of her. Its such a cheerful song, and she was such a wonderful, cheerful person. This is a beautiful piece of music for me to remember my auntie Jean, it suits her so well 💕💕
So glad it brings you great memories of a beloved aunt.
❤
I had a sister Jeannie, and she loved "Daydream Believer", too. I think she really liked the fact that Davy Jones was the lead vocalist in it. She, too, was greatly loved and was a beautiful person. She passed away in early 2020, a few weeks after our mother.
Amen
This made me tear up a little 🥹 I love everything about this
I had a connection behind the scenes of The Monkees years ago due to my animal campaigns. Davy Jones once wrote to me and had champagne waiting for me when I went to see him. His friend sent me a photo of Davy with his racehorse. A long time ago now. RIP Davy. ❤🐇
💘🙏
I lived near Dave Jones in East Manchester in the 80's, I saw him once or twice in the post office on Hyde Road between Debdale park and Denton Golf Club!!
@nickbarnes71. Wow, what a treat that would be..to run into Davy in the neighborhood. ❤😀
