The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Cass Elliott finally received her star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame this week. It was a grand ceremony with speakers including her daughter, Owen, Cass' sister, Leah, Stephen Stills, Michelle Phillips and John Sebastian. A perfect cool day graced the dedication and various offspring of the Phillips, Elliott clans were in attendance. Cass was an absolute joy to be around and was a walking lesson in how to use your voice. More than a few of us fellow performers studied her method, in hopes of gaining some insight on how she made the glorious sounds she did. Safe sailing, Cass. We were lucky to have you in our lives.
I agree. She was born a star and became a superstar. ❤
Owen, Cass' daughter sounds so much like her mother when she sings. Wish we'd hear more from her.
she is one of the most beautiful singers in the 60s ❤️
She was all that you say. She was also a "Wide Load". Clear the way, she is coming through!

too bad this is just the studio recording played and lipsynced live
This was my husband and my song in 1975! RIP my darling Joe! You left me 22years ago! I’m 71 now and I never loved again, you were the only man for me that I loved so totally and had three children together with! I will see you again soon and our hearts will beat together for eternity!😞💔
God bless
I still remember seeing them on this show..Cass had such a wonderful voice.
What a harmony laden group they were No one came close to The Mama's and Pappas how fortunate where we to have then in our golden era.
God bless you, how sweet… Of course, he will see Joe when the time comes
Nostalgia
Love the sarcasm from Cass.
Selten so eine Harmonie von 4 Stimmen gehört. Mit dem Geschrei von heute nicht zu vergleichen
I love how you can eat a banana, chew it , and still hit your notes perfectly as the day you recorded it.
Of course, lip syncing here made that banana eating more possible.
i noticed that - like when they start their medley you can hear Denny and those beautiful harmonies while the mic is still between his legs
This was a happy time in my life!
the lip syncing is strong in this one
It was a protest. They despised lip syncing. Reason for the banana
Rebellious Michelle for the Monday Monday and California Dreamin’ lmao
Those were my happiest days of my life. I'm 71 now.
Mine too, and I will be 69 in November. Where in the world did time go? Aging is so strange. But like music, we are all eternal!!
@@rogersargent6453 And we want to be eternal with Jesus in heaven, not in the other place (shudder).
Yes, really happy times we had - you are just 4 years older. hehe

Really one ofe the best flower power bands
Cass Elliot...what a beautiful, soulful voice!!! She's up there w/Karen Carpenter, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin...if you can't feel her tone, your soul is a hollow cone
You left out Whitney Houston; by far the best female singer in decades.

Yes I agree awesome singers,
This video helped me to see these my favourite singers' faces. Before, I thought they should have been more than 10 singers!
I love their songs.
It would be hard to find talent like this
And here it is for the first time, in all of its glory, the entire historic appearance as shown on the original broadcast. YES!!!
Yes, they were all breathing and talking. Then the audio track begins, and the Great Mamas & The Papas have to LIP-SYNC their own music in a controlled environment. There is NEVER a reason to LIP-SYNC anything. Musicians, Singers etc, this is their JOB, so if they cannot simply SING and PERFORM LIVE, then they need to choose different careers. Just be Studio Musicians, and never do shows such as this. I give them ZERO Credibility.
@@iknowthatsrite6009 - They are trying to sell records, not impress you or anyone else with live vocals. They succeeded by selling millions of records, being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame, and are considered one of the greatest vocal groups of the 60s. I guess your assignment of credibility means ZERO.
@@iknowthatsrite6009
There are actually very good reasons to lip sync tracks at certain times.
I learned this from the guy who was in charge of running Superbowl
Pregame Shows for more well over a dozen years straight. If he had not
done his job well the first time, they never would have hired him again, let
alone for all those years in a row.
@@dahawk8574 ELVIS PRESLEY Never Lip Sank in his performances. He sang every performance LIVE. His movies were a different story due to so many moving parts, stops and starts, and cast members fouling their lines. His concerts, guest appearances, tv spots, etc. Elvis ALWAYS Sang Live, Never Lip Syncing. This says a lot for Elvis, and his abilities as a Great Entertainer. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Brilliant and bizarre. Wonderful harmonies, Cass's voice seems to rise above the others.
Amazing vocals and music.
What a beautiful, professional group!
God they were sooooooo good!
I love their out fits they are all totally groovy. The 60s had real style not like now a days where we have zero style. Cue up the time machine beam me back Scotty. Mama Cass has a gorgeous voice and the harmonies are incredible.
The Mamas and Papas were so influential and classic!! What a tragedy when they lost Cass!!
@@rainstein3680 yes very sad about the early lost of Mama Cass and then the sudden lost of Karen Carpenter. Two lovely talented women with beautiful voices. R.I.P. ladies you are missed and loved.

You could just tell when you’re seeing Cass singing that there’s a warmth about her, that she loves her fans and she is so appreciative of all the positive attention she got because she truly looked like a woman who just loved being a star
Yup, she was truly special. Take it from someone who knows.
Cass had the best voice of the group an angels voice. God rest her beautiful soul.
I never knew her and yet I miss her so much😭
She looked like such a warm, caring person. I would have loved to have known her. She was so beautiful. I hope she found the Lord before her early death.
@@PapaAlec she died 10 years before I was born and yep, i feel the same.
Btw..Ed Sullivan should be in the rock and roll hall of fame..maybe he is...this guy and his team were absolutely way ahead of their time bringing rock and roll into our living rooms...and our parents actually let us watch these acts...Ed was brilliant
Someone once told my dad "You look like Ed Sullivan"; my dad got mad.
Without Cass, we would never have heard of The Mamas & The Papas. They are one of my favorite groups, but she made them.
She followed them to Tahiti to get them to let her into the group.
They didn’t know how to design Clothes for larger women back then. If they had she would’ve felt so much better about herself
Without John writing those great songs we wouldn’t have heard of them. Not a fan of John’s life choices but he wrote some great songs to showcase their talents.
THEY WERE NOTHING BEFORE CASS AND WENT BACK TO NOTHING WHEN SHE LEFT!!!!
THATS A BIT HARSH.
Merci ❤
The 60s, 70s were the coolest dressed, people, cars and times I think in American history. The definition of everything cool🇺🇸👍

Me too. Will be 69 in November. Thanks to an older brother who introduced their music to me at the age of 13 yrs old.
Have loved their music since. Continued to follow and collect all of Cass’ work. July 29th 1974 was a sad day for the music world
It lost a phenomenal person and singer. Never to be replaced. I look forward to meeting her in heaven someday. She brought a lot of joy in my life as an often confused teenager.
@@rogersargent6453 I’m so sad I wasn’t around when she was.. crazy how I miss her so much when I never even knew her!
@@PapaAlec Alec,
I am so thankful that your generation has been exposed to their music too now. Music is eternal, as we all are too.
Check out Janis Joplin’s story and music. Her style was very different from Cass’ but they both knew each other. She made her debut at the very first music concert, at the Monterey Pop Festival back in 1967. You tube has a clip of Janis singing Ball & Chain at the festival which was a ground breaking event. Cass is in the audience and her expression after hearing Janice was recorded is great. It is on You Tube also.
Cass was a special lady who was multi talented. Lots of clips on You tube on Carol Burnett and others like Tom Jones. All worth checking out!!
@@rogersargent6453 and I’m just as thankful for the previous generations that gave us such incredible music. I’ve watched that Ball and Chain video (loved it) and I remember Cass going “wow!!” At the end. I don’t know too much about Janis so I’ll have to be sure to read up on her :) I’ve watched so many videos of Cass performing and it never gets boring, she’s so fun to watch. I’m glad there’s so much footage available to help younger people like me find her. I only wish there were more live performances of The Mamas and The Papas lol
@@PapaAlec Hey Alec!
Cass and Janis were friends, but each had a totally different style of music. I loved them both!
One of my all time favorite Janis song was Little Girl Blue. Check out her live performance on Tom Jones.
It is such a moving rendition. That song has been sung by many artist thru the years, but none as heartfelt and emotional as Janis’. According to her sister, Little Girl Blue was Janis’ favorite to perform.
Sixties, the years when music and lyrics still existed...
It doesn't get more iconic!!!

What a great voice Denny had! World class!
Agree
I simply love these guys .. :D
Can you imagine young kids today forming a band and producing the extraordinary vocal harmony's and quality of sound that the momma's and papa's were willing to create. Just about doesn't exist in our youth today.
Their voices just blended with great harmony!
Fascinating, you can actually hear them sing over the plabyck track occasionally, I never noticed that, thats really cool!
3 things that made this group a hit. Mama's voice, Michelle's looks and the actual music provided by the back up musicians, the Hit Crew.
Don't forget John Phillips's songwriting, and the blend of Cass and Denny.
@@dout0rm942 He also impregnated his own daughter. Michelle could not even imagine this would happen later in her future, when the video was recorded...
Yes I agree awesome group sung in1966,year I was born 💙
Dennis's voice was great also.
The Wrecking Crew were the studio musicians
First real hippies I ever saw in my life when I was a little boy. They did a more than an excellent job selling the California Dream to a little boy from New Jersey. Their ballads and harmonization are the best
Actually they were the first imitation hippies to hit that big time. Cass may have been a hippie but the others not so much. Do some research and you'll find out that Phillips saw what was going on and knew the hippie thing would sell. Certainly they had some good material and good voices, and perhaps it wouldn't have sold so well without the "hippie" guise.
@andrewz4537 I was actually around 10 when the song came out..I really did not know what a hippie was except from "Mad Magazine " I went to a strict catholic school in New Jersey. You are correct in a pre-fab look controlled by an agent and record company..now that I think about it...I enjoyed your feedback..it's really nice that anybody actually reads what I wrote..Respectfully..Bob
@@andrewz4537 For me that's a tough one because I do have M&P actually credit for the Monterey Pop Festival and for writing San Francisco which was the theme of the Summer of Love. However, what you put is also true, though I do think Denny was probably a hippie, or was at least was a folkie and had come from the folk world. He was part of the Halifax Three with Zal Yansky of the Lovin Spoonful and was in the Mugwamps with Cass. Michelle was an immature eighteen year old who married a twenty five year old struggling musician named John Phillips who was married with a daughter and yeah wanted to hit the big time and saw his chance with this growing counterculture emerging in NY, California and London and would go worldwide by decades end. I think he was also a military school dropout to. But for all their faults, you have to give the group a lot, they did for the hippie movement and the image, though how good or bad that is, seems to still be written.
I'm Latino, and I'm just starting to see myself in the history of the 60's. I also found out "fun fact," Latino was actually a counterculture word. The mainstream didn't call us Latinos, they called us "Spanish," or "Spanish American," and introduced Hispanic in 1970. Latino came about from the counterculture's early interactions with the Latino communities in New York and California, who had migrated from Puerto Rico or had immigrated from Mexico, Cuba or Dominican Republic or other Latin American countries which President Johnson opened up immigration to in 1965. They would say often say, "yo soy, Latino Americano, I am Latin American," hippie kids shortened it to Latino and the term started appearing in the counterculture press. There was also Chicano to refer to Mexican American identity and would be the first expression of Latino American identity in the US. Anyone cop or square you see in some movie saying the word "Latino," just know how unrealistic and untrue that is, nor would they have said Chicano either. Spanish would be the nicest thing they would call us or just randomly assume okay this is California, you must be Mexican, this is New York you must be Puerto Rican, flower children were the ones to use the words "Latino," and "Chicano." Please get it right Hollywood.

With the introduction included in this clip, I can see that Cass was holding a microphone. Helps explain why she didn't use air quotes when she told Ed Sullivan they were going to "sing". And this segment's chosen banana ended up being a good example of "live television".
This was playing on my sirius XM on my way home from Seattle today. Mama has such an AWESOME voice.

The contrast of the image of Ed Sullivan with the Flower power image of the Mamas and Papas…is striking. I give him credit for bringing on all of stars going back to the late 50s . The Mamas and Papas songs are timeless and will last for generations to come. If Mama Cass was never born..the decade of the 60s music would have been drastically different..she was responsible for bringing so many people together including CSN.

What a period of history, you had to have been there to understand it. Things were all over the place: vietnam war raging, peace and love, wild creativity, finding a job was incredibly easy, rent was cheap. Lots more freedom then than now that is for sure.
Absolutely... well stated
Yes yes yes. In the early seventies, I worked in the summer and made enough to pay for university each year. I lived in a house with 6 others-most had jobs and one was a graduate student. We each paid $80 a month (eighty!) and that covered rent, heat, and food. Each of us cooked once a week. I learned to cook (curry, beef Stroganoff, lasagna, and so on). One woman was highly organized and made a list of tasks on a big chalk board. Each of us swept or vacuumed one day a week. A breeze! Also was taught a few tunes on the guitar that I still play.
