I was thinking about that the other day. It would be a nightmare to design in an online game, but I thought of how crazy it would be to herd cattle with the posse like that sheep mission with john.
After doing some calculations i have figured out that a 3-4 ounce gold nugget would probably sell to a black market fence for about 20 to 25 dollars in 1898... That means the thoroughbred selling for 18 gold BARS would cost $36000 to $45000... I don't think even prize winners sold for that much.
Hey Grant, I haven't crunched the gold numbers in a while, but if your numbers are right, and that the horse price is equivalent to that range, then you'd be correct. If I remember, the highest price KY Derby winner around that time sold for around $40k.
The quarter horse wasn't a recognized breed yet in 1899. Honestly the most popular horses are the "boring" ones in the game. The Tennessee Walking horse, Morgan and Old Kentucky Saddler. The Quarter horse is really a mix of these old breeds and others. I recommend googling the horses.

My original RDR2 horse was a chestnut Hungarian Halfbred named Corsair, after the ship type. But it might have actually been a standardbred, I’m not sure but I don’t have the save anymore…
Your incomes and havings are also overpriced. Hundred thousands of dollars and hundreds or thousands of gold bars. In comparison the prices are absolutely nothing.
I was waiting for the Arabian and another not mentioned being the Breton. But it makes sense why you didnt go over the role specific horses due do them ranging from $150 to $950 for the same breed
Yknow I'd love for this guy to take a look at stores, like item prices and stuff. And in story mode, I'm pretty certain you can sell things to certain stores, like herbs to doctors.

I wonder what made Rockstar choose to label Standardbreds as race horses rather than war horses. Because the palomino dapple standardbred I had for a while was skittish as could be in rdr2, almost as bad as an Arabian, but that just wouldn't be true then if they were actually war horses in real life, right?
Can you please sens a link to your sources ? Because i'm writing a novel set in the 1800s about a boy and a wild horse and i'd like to know which breeds were in the us back then. Especially the RDR ones. P.S: I knew that the turkoman was extinct at this time, but was it's descendant the akhal teke in the us back then ?
One question. Were some regional preferations dependent on the colour of the horse? For example would a black horse be used less in the southwest as in the northern states, or did this play a minor role? (I don't know that much about horses, so I have no idea how they react on heat and different weather types)
I'm in the market for a new horse in game but haven't decided on one yet. Looking at Turkoman, Roadsters, and even Kladrupers. (no grade for spelling please) I have a Thoroughbred and a Hungarian Halfbred (who's feelings you hurt). I dont ride the Thoroughbred often except in races. But, I do ride the Halfbred religiously and love him. He's scared of some wildlife but great in a fight. Like I said, I need a good all around mount but doing the homework first. Great vid👍
I think all the prices are marked up because it's so easy to get money in the game. If you just changed prices then a full large wagon of goods I'm the trader role would let you buy almost every gun in the game (as long as you're the right level)
while these are fun to watch, i dont think anyone has acknowledged that pricing in rdo or rdr2 should not be purely about historical accuracy, it’s a balance between that and much more importantly, game balance
For rockstar it usually is far more about encouraging micro transactions than game balance for the story mode it would be relatively easy to tweak by changing the items to their accurate prices and increasing / decreasing heist payouts
I absolutely love my Breton but I like my stuff in-game to have at least a smidge of historical accuracy and I can't find a single source as to whether or not they were ever imported to the American west. Sad this video didn't help. Anyone by any chance have answers?
Regrettably, Bretons weren't in the game at the time of making this video. Nonetheless, I went back and searched the archives for you. All I could find was that in 1888 an Arizona newspaper (St. John's Herald) published an article about an English couple travelling through the US in a fancy custom wagon pulled by two Breton horses. This is the only mention I can find of them in the US between 1865-1905. Hope that helps, partner!
Hey man I love your channel you're awesome dude and a god in my eyes lol 🙌 but please can you do a video on horse ponchos/clothing? And one for saddles please?

@@alexanderponce6741 Ha! It's all good man. Are you talking about a horse blanket that goes under the saddle? It sounds like you're also talking about some sort of blanket draped over the horse as well?
Depends a bit on the tribe. Which one are you going for, Mance? Comanches were famous for their Paint horses. The Nez Perce for their Appaloosas. Most others utilized the Mustang or Nakota, with different tribes having slightly different coat preferences. Most tribe preferred 'loud' coats though- that is, lots of splashes of contrasting colors. The Northern Cheyenne and Lakota war societies however favored blue roan Nakotas. Hope that helps!
Crazy about the andulasians cause I've heard for....well, for about the entire time I've been aware of mustangs that the first mestengos were andalusians
Quarter horse, but that’s not in the game. I did a bit of research and cowboys also typically rode Morgans, mustangs, Appaloosas, or paints. Those were some of the more popular breeds, but cowboys also rode just about anything.
@@Jonathan32177 Most mountain men and fur trappers used a mule as a pack animal, laden with furs. They'd tow it behind their horse. Even though a hunting wagon can hold 5 (or so) carcasses, it doesn't spawn up in the woods and mountains where I hunt. As such I'd prefer to bring along a pack mule. Now I know that you can just steal another horse and use it for said purposes, but I'd prefer a mule, especially if they gave it proper characteristics. For instance, a mule can pull and carry more than a horse in proportion to its bodyweight, they eat less than horses, are more patient, and are often more sure-footed and discerning of terrain. It might not be something everybody wants, but I'd love one.
@@ManvsHistory I love mules, use to own one and would still take a good mule as a riding horse over any other breed.. But what I meant was what purpose would it serve in-game.. currently, a hunting wagon holds 5 carcasses or 50 pelts, your owned horse can hold 1 large and 2 med carcasses + 20 pelts. Not to mention your own personal inventory of 30 of each type of meat, parts, pelts, and small animals. The only real use I could think for a Mule to serve ingame .. is as either as you said, a companion that could be called out and would follow you around while hunting ( which would open the door for hunting dogs and so on ) Or as a fearless mount that really shines in mountain hunting ( going areas current horses have issues with) Maybe someday we will see a "Gold Rush" update that will allow us to own the Mule with that one NPC saddle with the storage boxes on the back.. and Donkey Carts, For our prospecting and mining needs. Personally, i would love to see a total revamp to the animal spawn system and AI , that would make hunting more of a challenge and realistic.. As seen in The Hunter Classic. Where baiting and slower-paced hunting is ideal, as well as a trapping system put in place. But its doubtful as R* seems to target more toward the casual young players and less to the long term dedicated play styles.
@@Jonathan32177 Yeah, I think the mule should be able to carry two large carcasses. That would place its utilitarianism between a second horse and the hunting wagon. Add to it some other positive attributes and I'd be a very happy player. I also love your idea of bringing in the NPC storage saddle for mules/horses- particularly if they implemented the mining role. As for hunting, I'm also with you. I'd like it to be about patience, skill, etc. Copy theHunter. Cater it to older players who want to really hunt in the magnificent world they created. Right now it's more about riding up to an animal on a horse and blasting it at full gallop. Fingers-crossed.
So the black Arabian sells for 42 gold bars. If you purchase something using gold instead of cash, 1 gold bar is equal to $25. So the black Arabian is equal to $1,050.
Have you thought about doing one for saddles? Some of the saddles are more expensive than horses, and I'm pretty sure some are just not historically accurate!
saddles are very expensive nowadays like a good one is like 2500-5000 and a lot of the saddles might have existed back then but nowadays the most realistic ones you can get is the gerden trail saddle or the lumley ranch cutter saddle.
And the Trade role horse the Kladruber or Old Kladruber horse would not have been in the west at all, as it was horse bred as gallacarosier for Emperors and Kings and i´m sure nobody in the National stud in Czech Republic would sell the horse to some trader from America as cheap as he is in RDRO 2.
@@bgerystt3801 Don´t try to be smart with me i live in todays Czech Republic i writen it that way because foreigners don´t usualy know there was Kingdom of Bohemia or Austro-Hungarian Empire. And nobody would still in that time sell Kladrubers, they were only for royal houses.
What I find hilarious is that a white roan horse wasn't pointed out for historical inaccuracy. While its genetically possible, roan is a dilution gene that adds white hair to a horse. So a white horse with roan would look just like a white horse without roan. The coat Rockstar made... horses don't come in that color at all. At most you could stretch and say its a varnish or sabino like color of some sort but really it's just fake lol.

This is a great channel. Keep up the good work.
Great show rockstar Likes to promote realisms in there games i believe that should also be held in high observation especially in there online capacity
They gotta add different colors for stirrups and lanterns. I'm tired of the best stirrups not matching my saddle and same with the red lantern.
No Missouri Fox Trotter? :(
i play this game for the horses i grind money to buy new horses and my my your content was music to my ears, i wish we could easily pick up horse riding in real life, good job, plz to make a update video on the new role horses and other beloved horses like MFT.
I don't care it's a re-upload!!! Great video man!!!! 🤘
As always, thanks for the support, Bruno! Appreciate it, brother!
Why didnt you mention the three other horses, Foxtrotter, kentucky saddler, and Tennessee walker.
Not enough information available.
@@ManvsHistory ah ok thanks
I honestly got the game for the horses and ended up growing to love the story and community. I can name a horse’s breed and colouration no problem :)
Was this one of the few that were just a hair under 10 mins??
Either way... you know me. I'll support!
The fishing one was for sure... took your advice and extended it beyond 10!
Yeah until you realize the specialized coats are $20 ACTUAL dollars or more for the price of gold bars
One question. Were some regional preferations dependent on the colour of the horse? For example would a black horse be used less in the southwest as in the northern states, or did this play a minor role? (I don't know that much about horses, so I have no idea how they react on heat and different weather types)
That's a great question.... one that I do not know off-hand. I'll need to look into it.
@@ManvsHistory Thanks for the quick response! I'm looking forward to learn more
I'm in the market for a new horse in game but haven't decided on one yet.
Looking at Turkoman, Roadsters, and even Kladrupers. (no grade for spelling please)
I have a Thoroughbred and a Hungarian Halfbred (who's feelings you hurt).
I dont ride the Thoroughbred often except in races.
But, I do ride the Halfbred religiously and love him. He's scared of some wildlife but great in a fight. Like I said, I need a good all around mount but doing the homework first. Great vid👍
Norfolk roadster is a solid horse no complaints with mine , the Breton is surprising good for something that looks like a pig
@@jamiehannigan4440 ok. appreciate the heads up. 👍
New mustangs are amazing
Just imagine how much money those thoroughbred would cost today
20 dollars no one likes thoroughbred except for horse racers
@@mihakabercic4457 untrue lmfao
@@SallyVno its true
I think all the prices are marked up because it's so easy to get money in the game. If you just changed prices then a full large wagon of goods I'm the trader role would let you buy almost every gun in the game (as long as you're the right level)
I love your videos I just wish you uploaded more often but I get it you probably have other things that you need to do
Thanks, Isaac. Yeah, I'm still a full-time history professor, so I can only create content during my downtime.
Nice video... shame this video was actually a re-upload....
he is on a fishing trip and to still give us some stuff to watch he re-uploads deleted video's

Please do one video for the role horses
Fascinating, great vid 🤠👍
What about the missouri fox trotter, they have historical accuracy to exists in 1899?
Can you tell us the history of " Buket heads " ? the arrmerd helmets in call to arms. If not thats ok,
while these are fun to watch, i dont think anyone has acknowledged that pricing in rdo or rdr2 should not be purely about historical accuracy, it’s a balance between that and much more importantly, game balance
For rockstar it usually is far more about encouraging micro transactions than game balance for the story mode it would be relatively easy to tweak by changing the items to their accurate prices and increasing / decreasing heist payouts
Indeed the pricing of horses is the most uninteresting aspect of the game, what is important is their availability.
Which horse would you use that is historically accurate to what a cowboy would have saddled?
It absolutely did, thank you so much!
@@illy-noiz You bet, buddy!
for simplicity, if you need help with translating the gold onto cash, 1 gold bar = 25 RDO$
Hey man I love your channel you're awesome dude and a god in my eyes lol 🙌 but please can you do a video on horse ponchos/clothing? And one for saddles please?
Thanks, buddy. What do you mean by 'horse ponchos?' I talk about ponchos and saddles in my latest vaquero video, but it sounds like you're asking for something else.
@@ManvsHistory like a horse covering for wet or cold weather
Under the saddle would be a horse covering lol I'm sorry man I may not know what I'm talking about just something I've seen before.
@@alexanderponce6741 Ha! It's all good man. Are you talking about a horse blanket that goes under the saddle? It sounds like you're also talking about some sort of blanket draped over the horse as well?
@@ManvsHistory yes exactly what I'm talking about yes sir you're awesome
As ever an absolutely brilliant video. Ride em cowboy....yeeeha!
In RDO what would be the historically right horse for an Indian?
Depends a bit on the tribe. Which one are you going for, Mance? Comanches were famous for their Paint horses. The Nez Perce for their Appaloosas. Most others utilized the Mustang or Nakota, with different tribes having slightly different coat preferences. Most tribe preferred 'loud' coats though- that is, lots of splashes of contrasting colors. The Northern Cheyenne and Lakota war societies however favored blue roan Nakotas. Hope that helps!
@@ManvsHistory Wanting a Comanche horse, which one would you recommend in the game?
@@mancerayder9174 American Paint, lots of contrasting colors.
1: Get a job at rockstar 2: money in rdo is differently priced, if you understand
Crazy about the andulasians cause I've heard for....well, for about the entire time I've been aware of mustangs that the first mestengos were andalusians
I think it's safe to say that early mustangs had a fair amount of Andalusian in them, which just became watered down with time.
@ManvsHistory not surprising considering the staggering amount of horseflesh that went west
Really wish that rockstar would let us unsaddle are horses on red dead redemption 2 online for role players
So what would be the most common horse for a standard cowboy? And what did the saddles look like back in the day?
Quarter horse, but that’s not in the game. I did a bit of research and cowboys also typically rode Morgans, mustangs, Appaloosas, or paints. Those were some of the more popular breeds, but cowboys also rode just about anything.
Since Andalusians would've been rare that makes it more desirable to me since it seems more Unique
And now with recent update , we get $500 mustangs ... AND STILL NO DONKEY WITH SADDLES !!!
I'd like to see them add a mule to be used as a pack horse. I think this is long overdue.
@@ManvsHistory what purpose would it really serve though? What would we put on it ?
The only real use I could think for a Mule to serve ingame .. is as either as you said, a companion that could be called out and would follow you around while hunting ( which would open the door for hunting dogs and so on ) Or as a fearless mount that really shines in mountain hunting ( going areas current horses have issues with)
Maybe someday we will see a "Gold Rush" update that will allow us to own the Mule with that one NPC saddle with the storage boxes on the back.. and Donkey Carts, For our prospecting and mining needs.
They need to make that hat available again.
Missouri fox trotters?
But how do I buy a donkey!?
Solid. Thank you.
Are kladrubers accurate or no
are morgans really that small?
So the black Arabian sells for 42 gold bars. If you purchase something using gold instead of cash, 1 gold bar is equal to $25. So the black Arabian is equal to $1,050.
How do you have 33,581 dollars? Any specific strategy?
Trader runs. Back-to-back w/ friends.
How about the norfolk roadster
The Czech republic didnt exists in 1898 nor in 1907. Was the region of Bohemia in the old Austrp-hungarian empire.

Hey hey my Arthur rides a wild bay mustang that he tamed. She's a good girl! Much braver than a thoroughbred or Arabian. So don't diss the mustangs.😛
Nice video and greetings from Ohio ✌️
Thanks Travis!
I've been rocking a female Dutch Warmblood since beta and I'm to attached to her to use another one. Lbvs
The closest to the Turkoman horse would be the Akhal-Teke or the Iomud.
$7000 for a horse with todays inflation is well over $220,000.
Was there turkomans? Can someone anwser
Hey Lester. My understanding is that there are no pure Turkomans left today. The modern Akhal-Teke is thought to have descended from them, though. Regardless, there were no Akhal-Teke's in the Old West (or full Turkomans for that matter)- so if you're asking whether they would be accurate to the game, no. Hope that helps.
With our luck Rockstar will add some other horse that never made it to the American West, like the Lipizzan.
They did make it. I saw them in the early 70's in the midwest.
Ok it was circus where I saw them
