Hey drone gang! “Consumer Firmware” is the conditioning of consumers by luxury brands to manufacturer the sense of need; stroke desire. The DJI Mini 2 drone is suddenly a lemon, thanks to the Mini 3. But the DJI Mini 4 will make them all obsolete. More is better. MUST have the latest version. Satisfied, until the new model drops.
This playful short film I made is designed to highlight that within our drone hobby.
Some of the greatest photographs & movies in history were created on cameras that are 100 years old! The image quality isn’t technically perfect: low dynamic range, some noise in the shadows. But that is meaningless. Those are treasured enduring works of art because the images have soul: they tell a story, they have strong subject, composition, truly unique cinematography.
Ansel Adams had a great quote that’s applicable here: “There’s nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”
The videos on UA-cam that talk about gear/tech get 100 times more views than the videos that talk about subject / composition / lighting.
I’m not immune to the gear lust. It’s super fun to look. But I earnestly try to sequester it to a tiny portion of mental time & space. Plus I’m broke. :-)

I love your videos and stories! They are very inspirational and motivating for me. I am a complete beginner and I am very happy that I found your channel that put me on the right track as I was about to give up on photography as I felt lost in all those technical details and expensive equipment that "everyone should get in order to have nice pictures or videos". Giving up is easy. Mini 2 was my 1st drone; first flight was awful; despite watching videos I just didn't get it and thought I never would. Simple advice ~ to start out fly very near you and keep well away from "everything" ... Oh! And go alone to permit concentration. I had a cold sweat on my first few flights...

I started my modest channel with a Mini 2 and now I've added the Mini 3 Pro, but the Mini 2 is still my favorite. I agree not to abandon the automatic mode, it is a great resource.

Ted, I’m 80 years old and consider myself an amateur photographer (going back to the 1960’s). I also own a mini-2 and enjoy getting those images and videos on what for me becomes a really high tripod. You had me going with the hacked firmware… Awesome story telling, I always get inspiration by tuning in. Thanks.
That was a great skit. I understand how it feels when you're excited about the new drone that you got and everyone else is sporting the latest and greatest. I never let that get me down. I did end up getting the Mavic 3 Classic but it wasn't because of others making my drones feel outdated. I did it because I wanted to create better content. The volcano was really cool and those kids were enjoying the air from the props for sure. I do it all the time in the summer before I land my drone. I hover it over my head and get that cool air feeling. Great stuff Ted.

A sweet little parable on how modern marketing pushes us ever forward to buy the next best thing, because we don't want to get left behind with last years shiny thing. We sometimes need a little impetus, such as the fake update, to get out and really use what we already have that's performing just fine. Please keep setting examples of it's more in the inspiration than what the next new shiny object can do for us.

Fun little ditty. Gave me pause to recall and reflect on my first drone: it was a box brownie tethered to a sheep stomach inflated with hydrogen gas my granddaddy manufactured using high pressure steam he pumped through the manure slurry pit and collected in a 65 vw bug he converted into a pressure vessel- good times. I lost it to an unexpected conflagration, those old flash bulbs yield quite a spark in humid conditions ;P

yes! you said it well. There’s so many considerations & variables with a flying camera & cinematography. It’s important to remember to chill the F* out and have fun…..and that’s when creativity starts to flow.
Nicely done! Great message, and I loved the final spike in the form of the last text to put a point on it. Our world is far too dependent on tech ( funny thing for a career software architect to make ) in lieu of actual creativity. One of the best, and most consistent messages through all of your videos so far has been about simplifying, framing and storytelling... Other "experts" all focused on gadgets, effects and complicated moves, and yet, compare the fruits of their "lessons" with those of your instructional tomes, and I am reminded of exactly what jumped out about your video library and made me want to come back over and over... I have a personal saying as a software guy... "I can teach a monkey to write code... But I absolutely cannot teach him how to apply those skills to CREATE a good product". There is a definite line between skills ( those things we learn ) and talent ( that creative energy which drives toward what and how we put those skills to good use ). You have a wonderful talent for engaging and educating people through visual and verbal storytelling, and you have developed strong presentation skills for holding to a theme, leveraging the awesome power of understatement, and helping to put personal anxieties at bay. Keep up the great work. If success is measured by truly inspiring one person to your craft, you are well on your way on what should be a very rewarding journey

Brilliant Ted, you filmmaking and inspiration is contagious and makes me want to make better videos. All other drone channels talk about nd filters and movement instead of telling us the basics about cinematography and not making just one long boring video from start to finish like i did when i started with my drone. Watching your channel has given me a better understanding of editing and shot captures more than any other channel and i thank you for this. Hopefully soon I will not be ashamed of my filmmaking attempts and with your tuition and guidance be able to show some on my channel . Keep making your vids for us newbies Cheers Ted.

Hi Ted. Just found your channel and I am sooo happy about that! Watched a few of your videos and just wanted to tell you now that you are so inspiring. I have a Mini 3 Pro and I love this flying camera but I am often too hesitated to use it. Too much technical thougts about perfect settings and so on slow me down...sad, i know. And now with your recommendation to use auto and get such beautiful footage with this setup, I really get a new drive to test it out and use my little drone more often again. So many thanks for putting out these videos for us. You have such great ideas and storytelling, so I have to watch all the other videos from you. I like your attitude, your happiness and the way you approach the subject. And I'm looking forward to the next video. But, hahaha!, I'd like to comment.
I noticed that you might want to mention something extra. I was filming a church the other day, switching from sun to shade in the morning, with your settings that you recommend. The only problem is, when you edit your individual videos, you can't just copy your settings from one video to the other, because the basic values change when you go from sun from front to shadow. You know what I mean?
Your recommendations work for individual scenes or when the light doesn't change. The moment there is shadow and light, it becomes hard to generate a workflow. You have to adjust each scene individually. Both sides have advantages and disadvantages.
hey buddy. I’m not sure what you mean. So you’re in auto exposure mode….and you’re saying at your church scene you went from the sun into the shade. The auto exposure mode will ensure your exposure is correct in both scenes. THAT is the important part.
If the exposure is correct in both scenes…..what is the problem?
If you only use auto exposure mode and don't post-process the videos, you're right. But if you start adjusting the scene manually, you can run into problems.
The basic idea is ok and works. But e.g. a single preset for a complete shoot doesn't work here.

Great video! It's true. I find some modern cameras to be too "perfect" and too clinical. I find myself editing my images to make more granular and natural looking.

hey there! you can just call me Ted. So you’re up in Massachusetts. Super cool. I don’t record audio with my drone. I once taped a Rode wireless lav to my drone and flew around but the prop noise is obviously too loud. I sometimes put sound effects over my drone footage, but those sound effects are generic from a music subscription service. Thank you for watching!
So here is the question….when you got your mini 3, did that stifle your work with the mini 2? Or is some of the stuff you did with your mini 2 still the best stuff you have done. Personally, I just got the air 2s, and honestly there are things that I have done with my mini 2, that I honestly can’t imagine doing any better!

I heard once "the best camera you have is the one you have on you" - Guess we can update that to "the best flying camera you have is the one you have" Doesn't need to be the latest generation or the newest or whatever, just fly and create content that you like! Get out and fly
I agree, the Mini 2 is still a very good drone and you can still capture awesome video. However, you really need to upgrade your cellphone 🤔😆
ha! funny you noticed. My iphone is i think the iPhone 6? It’s like almost 8 years old. I ain’t mad at it! she’s got character. We’re like an old married couple. She doesn’t mind my farts.
My mini 2 video looks like trash especially in low light. The whole frame is filled with grainy noise static like effect anytime the camera shifts. As long as just in a hover it looks ok but any movement and the video is unusable. I have had 3 replacements from DJI everytime they say camera module is no good and replace the drone. I get it back and same thing. Your videos and everyone else on UA-cam the videos look crisp and clear
Check tour sd card has enough memory and a fast writting capacity. I think that can be this. I notice the same in my mini 2. Sometimes more ir less
