How do these ponds do in the winter in north east?
Next time, put the bigger container down upside down and work to attach the smaller container on top of that, then flip it over. Much easier than trying to center the big container on top of the little container.
I LOVE the idea of using a book light! I'm going to do that for my new Betta's aquarium! For siphoning mini ponds, you could use a powerhead with a sponge over the inflow to keep the fish from getting sucked up. A powerhead with tubing attached is much smaller than a pump and will move the water out much faster than a regular siphon. That's what I use for my patio container ponds for water changes. Just be sure to put a sponge over the intake as it will shred your fish if they get sucked in.
I added different neocaridina shrimps to mine. they co habitat well together. I'm on pot or pond #3 now. all with different color shrimps and rice fish
Very coool!!!!😎
Do you have to keep up with temp if u put shrimp and have them outdoor ???
@@Spookylator20 no. they can live under some ice as well. mine have been out all winter
It's almost Autumn and I am literally obsessed with building a container pond and adding Medakas. Never built one before and really appreciate the video series. Thank you!
I want one too now!
I really love the Creeping Jenny. So many ideas on how I can improve my ponds next summer. I'm sure those sponge mops work well, considering their popularity, but they are so ugly. I'm just going to move my water hyacinth from the adult ricefish pond to the baby ricefish pond.
Just love these mini ponds! So pretty and very interesting to watch! 😊
The fish would cook in AZ and here in Las Vegas! today was 117. No mercy in the shade. I had an indoor pond for a few years.
Oh dang, ok i forget it can get that hot 🤷♂️🤪
@@AQUAPROS yea, seriously trying to figure out why I'm here 40 years. lol
@@traci4750 im the same way tbh 😅😅😅
The pond series has been very enjoyable.
Thanks! You got any ponds!?
Agreed!
Just built myself a new patio pond. I’m curious what you do with your floating plants and livestock on winter?
You can move your floating plants inside, same with the fish if you really want to or think that a 5 gallon bucket would freeze, but rice fish can survive np with the top layer frozen 🫡
I'd just drain it down a bit and move it indoors during the winter before it freezes and have a nice little indoor pond to enjoy inside while it's cold outside. Put a small light over it and an air stone and treat it just like an aquarium. 😊
@@vanissaberg5824 totally a great option!
@@AQUAPROS the rice fish I knew would survive a Michigan winter, it’s the plants I was unsure about. Last year in my 300 gallon pond I just put a deicer in the pond and I had zero losses but that houses native pan fish species and a large mouth bass. The deicer I got from TSC for like 20-30 bucks and it worked fantastic in that one. But it’s also a stock tank and that deicer was intended for use in it and as I said, no plants.
JB weld (plastic weld) it's cheap easy to use and very strong it's a 2 part epoxy that comes in a syringe .....awsome built my dude! 🤙🏼
Hey thanks for this!
Just setting mine up now ❤
Very enjoyable to watch!
Don't know if this was suggested yet/if you tried this approach, but you can line the inner overhang lip (that makes it hard to clean out the bottom as you mentioned earlier in the video) with aluminum tape or other reflective material and thread a line of LEDs in that gap, ideally trying to face them downwards but the reflective material will make it more diffuse anyway. That way you can hide the LEDs a bit better, they might be better at penetrating to the bottom of the pot pond
Thanks! Ya ill have to look into somethin like that, might work good 🫡
Such a cool set up! Great ideas.
What about when it rains or when it’s too cold
Good idea on the book light clip
You got any ponds this summer?
@@AQUAPROS summer is year round where i'm at 😅
Do you have a link to the light you used?
No filter or air stone?
i feel like the rim of that bucket is big enough to stick a led strip up underneath, essentially use it as a led channel, that way it would point down along side all the way around the bucket, and the strips would be protected from the weather.
Looks great. Im going to to a pot pond, but i dont think I'll be adding fish.
I'm gonna make one of these! Sick!
yesss! its so worth it :)
The ir themometer mesures surface temperature which means you only get the correct number if ALL water ADN the surface have the same. If you point it at transparent plastic you might get the wrong number. A proper thermometer for water is pretty cheap.
What do you recommend to use as mini pond as size and material?
If your gonna add ricefish the size can be pretty small but I like to use planters that hold 5 to 15 gallons of water (thats a good range for me) you can do a lot with that.... Material isnt super important, most everything wont leach anything harmful. Resin is a good choice cause it light weight but fiberglass can also work. Regular ceramic ones are fine too, they are just really expensive
Question: In my aquarium I use soil, then cap it with sand. Is this something you can do in a container pond? Or will the sand be enough? I plan for 110 gallon container with rice fish. Great videos!!!! :)
What kind of sand do you use?
You may say, but what fish do you use? Guppies are my favorite, but they are hard to get here in Hawaii. We also don’t have rice fish, so I need something. Any ideas?
Having the hardest time finding light colored pots for my pond. Lowe’s doesn’t seem to carry them anymore.
Just set up 2 on opposite sides of front porch, wish I could put fish in but will all the raccoons with river they would not survive, but still pretty.
where do you get the hand on side container?
Great vid tx but our local aquarium shop says all fish tanks or ponds need a pump to oxygenate the water for the fish, why do you not use one here please?
If you have enough plants and surface area you don’t necessarily need an air stone or filter. There are plenty of tanks/ponds with nothing that agitates the water … the oxygen all comes from the plants
Are plastic containers safe for the fish ?
Just found your channel! Dope ideas! What state do you live in? Wanna try some of these ideas but worried about the seasons.
PNW 🫡
Well done! Where can I order those pots?
They're available at Lowe's
@@NYCHILATX really? I can't find it on their site...
i wish i could do ponds, but here i have highs of 90s for most of the summer...
Shade! Do a little more research on ricefish, i know people in socal that have em out all summer no problem!
@@AQUAPROS ill look into the shade temps now...
@@corydora2894 ya fill a bucket with water and get one of the infared thermometers!
@@AQUAPROS i think ill just use a normal thermometer... I apreaciate you helping me with this. Im gonna see how the temps get, and if they get too hot i wont try next year (its a little late to start this year) but if they stay reasonable i might end up doing it.
@@corydora2894 glad to help! 😎🫡
Is that pond container plastic? and is the rim hollow? Why not hide some LED strips in the rim facing down to light the water? Also, if it's wobbly, maybe fill the smaller pot with concrete for more weight and stability? and find a more sturdy way to attach the two together? I really like this setup.
All good ideas! I might fill the bottom with concrete next spring. Thank you!
And yes its plastic
How are you controlling algae accumulation? I've created patio ponds twice for growing aquatic plants and both times they just became ridden with algae growth. What am I doing wrong?
Try full shade, this one has been algae free for 2 weeks, but a lil algae is normal, if its gettin crazy then its prolly just too much direct sunlight 🤷♂️🫡
Hmmm great tip! How often are you required to do a pond cleaning on a set up like yours? Would snails/ shrimp help keep the patio pond clean?
@@calvinviana129 very little cleaning, unless there a big algae problem or something wird happens. OR if a bunch of plants decay and theres too much mulm at the bottom. I just treat em like a low maintinance aquarium
I would love to do this, but, yeah, raccoons have destroyed my past pond efforts. But it looks beautiful! Great job!
Ya raccoons are def a big problem.....
How do you keep raccoons out
Just lucky they not around!
Filtration?
Where are you?
👍🏻👍🏻
Sheeesh, sup andrew, hows the summer goin?
I would sat the big pot in the smaller one not the way your doing it
First. Love the channel, keep up the good work!
Thanks sam, you got any ponds this summer?
Not yet, I don’t have my own place right now but this patio pond looks like it could work well for the space I do have!
No goldfish need colour
Plants are overcrowded. Poor fish
Get a life
