Ooof. Guy who doesn't really like Death Metal and or screaming listens to one of BTBAMs heaviest albums and doesn't like it. Surprised. Definitely rage bait. 😂
Tough but fair. I do love this album and this band…but it’s also oddly refreshing watching someone just flat out hate on it lol. BTBAM are legends and while most of their fans are generally pretty chill people…there’s also an annoying amount of elitism. Lots of Rick and Morty fanboy vibes. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times I’ve heard some version of: “No, you’re just not SMART enough to UNDERSTAND their COMPLEXITY and GENIUS.” Even though I’m a huge fan of theirs, hearing someone who’s had proper musical training just shit on it for 15 min is honestly hilarious to me and reading some of the salty comments is even funnier. In my mind I think Coma Ecliptic would be more up your alley! it’s closer to rock opera and much, much more cohesive. However, thats only in relation to their other works…so, take that with a grain of salt lol. Cheers!
@@unclefoot thanks for the rare reasonable comment! I'd be stupid to write off their whole discography solely because I didn't like one album. I'd definitely be down to check out Coma Ecliptic at some point. I foolishly promised on Patreon that I would do both Colors albums so I have to listen to the second one at some point. That should be entertaining... I'm going to give it a fair chance though and I won't go in trying to hate it
@@coreyclip1 the second one is definitely a better ride for a non-stan. It’s a lot more cohesive and mature. I feel like a lot of the fervor over colors 1 is due to when it was released and the nostalgia for that era of metal…when it first dropped there was almost nothing like it and a lot of people (myself included) were blown away and became overnight fans. It sounded like bottled chaos lol. But, a lot changes in 17 years…while the over the top randomness and breakneck shredding were ground breaking at that time, in hindsight I can see why it would be grating to a new listener. I’m legitimately curious to see how colors 2 treats you! I think you’ll find more things to like about it, but probably not enough to fall completely in love with it. HOWEVER, Coma Ecliptic might fully win you over! It’s in my mind their best work
Plus one for Coma Ecliptic. I could never get into BTBAM bc wasn’t into that type of harsher metal, more just proggy stuff. Coma hooked me immediately then everything else they did grew on me, now they might be my fav band. Coma ironically much more sonically colorful than Colors, lot of vocal styles and crazy synths, their most underrated album IMO.
Try some of their earlier (or later) stuff on for size, if you care to. The Great Misdirect, their album directly after this one, is their best work imo and feels much more cohesive and like a genuine musical journey, rather than the "random assortment of parts" that this album can feel like.
So fun fact about this album that actually might make you appreciate it much more; the band wrote this album almost entirely as a direct response to their experience playing Ozzfest 200(5?) They hated what they saw and experienced at that festival so much, that they decided to write a mission statement of an album/go in a direction that would ensure that they would never be invited to play back with the popular metal crowd ever again. The song White Walls in particular deals a lot with this, lyrically speaking.
@@ApplySomePressure54 that actually makes a lot of sense. It's definitely very chaotic on purpose and I think they're all very talented to write something like this, I just hate listening to it
Yep, you hit the nail about the random songwriting. I can't get into this band at all too, and I'm even a user in r/progmetal where they are worshipped like gods lol. That said please check out The Amensal Rise by Omnerod for some crazy prog metal that I think is more cohesive.
Honestly wonder if you would like Coma Ecliptic more, probably the least heavy album and more cohesive songwriting since its like a rock opera. Would probably get a kick out of The Ectopic Stroll especially if you like their wackier side.
I bought this album randomly in like 2011 or 2012, somewhere around that time. I think I'd heard of it but I'd never heard it, and I saw it in a music store for cheap so I picked it up. I didn't really listen to it much, I couldn't get into it. I listened a bit more in the past couple years or so and the same thing, I just wasn't into it. Hearing snippets of it now, I thought they were more Protest The Hero (my favourite band), but I'm getting more Arsonists Get All The Girls (also a good band), but AGATG are more fun. I'm with you, I don't like this.
BTBAM elitist fanboy here. I think context of listening experience, and where one is coming from in terms of musical background and life experience are very important components to one's appreciation for this album and band. Your opinion is not wrong, but you are listening to this for the first time from a MUCH different place than I was when I first listened to it.
One of the best albums of all time imo. Learning this beast on guitar made me appreciate it so much more.. also it reminds me of Dream Theater gone metalcore so I fuck with it. But I know a lot of people who can’t get into BTBAM so they’re not for everyone.
@@METALBIRB I'm obviously playing up the hatred a bit for fun, but I just don't really like this kinda stuff. As a vocalist, I find myself latching most onto vocals, melody and groove, and with something like this that's super technically impressive, it doesn't really get me emotionally but I respect the hell out of the talent
And anything after the parallax ep is kinda ass from these guys, the great misdirect and prior are perfect albums And very disappointed in this review.
Agree to disagree, but maybe you shouldn't review stuff that just isn't for you. And maybe you shouldn't skip through an album that is intended to be listened to as one big long piece, and expect to like it or think it's cohesive. What a silly way to listen to an album. Peace broski.
