Ahh yes you've come back to what I consider the greatest prog metal album of all time. The guitar riff with drums after he yells "The end starts now" is just epic! You need to listen to the song/album multiple times to notice all of the little details.
I've been listening to them for over a decade now and i STILL notice new details every now and then, it's mind boggling :D
Most of my favorite music comes from long concept albums, and it's a shame more casual listeners can't share in the experience.
Bryan's criticisms of unconventional song structure and the lack of repetition of ideas don't hold up in context to the album.
Pointing out the weird organ section as being "weird for weirdness sake" when it's actually a leitmotif repeated in three different parts of the album really stood out to me for that reason.
There’s a UA-cam channel called Metal Music Theory that made an argument that this song is basically a prog metal sonata, he also wrote his master thesis on this album too. Thank you for always being willing to check Out more BTBAM stuff even after all that you’ve covered so far. I still think you’re just scratching the surface with this band
Many of the moments that feel out of place or "odd for oddity sakes" are foreshadowing larger moments later in the album. This has always been one of my favorites live. Always love seeing you react to them!
I had that with most of their songs when I first listened to them, which made me feel some kind of disconnected to the music itself. And when I finally listened to everything from start to end, they became my favorite band of all time lol
They have a live DVD of the whole of Parallax II done in a studio - this was my first introduction to them and seeing the performance really adds to the musical appreciation to me.

BTBAM is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I absolutely love The Parallax II.
This album was the one that spellbound me to their music.
Like you, I think this album just feels more mature.
I think the chaotic nature of the music, even if it doesn't make much sense musically, just hits my ADHD brain in the right spot.
I cry listening to this album! Not just to the lyrics, but because of the music.
It's weird, I guess my neuro-spice makes it emotional for me. lmao
There are bits of this song that also call back to the previous EP, Parallax I. Also, this is my favorite song off this album. I’ve listened to it far too many times. And you should too. The structure is pretty simple actually. Intro, heavy shift, chorus, heavy shift, meandering bridge, chorus redux, outro. You can’t look at the phrase shifts as individual sections because they are often referencing bits before and after. There’s been some great analysis of how this album in particular follows classical structure. Super interesting and yes, fun.
The story in Parallax 2 is incredible and definitely BTBAM's best concept album to date. I get why everyone thinks you would vibe with Automata, but I personally feel like Coma Ecliptic would be the album for you. It's the album with the most clean vocals throughout, and it has a ton of melodic ideas that marinate and don't just disappear.

So as for those seemingly random bits of music that you found offputting, you have to keep in mind this is a piece of a huge musical journey that's not just a massive 75 minute concept album, but it includes also references and connections to the previous The Parallax 1 EP, which worked as a setup to the story, and even to some older songs in their discography (Lost Perfection, Prequel to the Sequel, Fossil Genera and Swim to the Moon, to be precise) that were used to introduce the characters and some of the plot ideas for the entire story. So while they will feel out of place on their own, everything is there as a part of a bigger picture.
Also, as you somewhat got the idea from glancing at the lyrics, this song follows a character that is extremely indecisive, and kind of losing his mind after carrying on with a mission he doesn't even know if he should, so a lot of those inconsistencies are used to display the character's split mind and indecisiveness, also how he constantly drift in and out of consciousness.
Extremely brief story summary:
In Prequel to the Sequel Prospect 2 was part of a group of people that met a creature who was a sort of embodiment of life. The relationship goes south and the thing starts wilting away, and with it all life in the universe. In Lost Perfection this group of people decide to go on a mission to repopulate the universe through the means provided by the evil masterminds behind the entire story: the Night Owls, indroduced in Fossil Genera. In the Parallax 1, P2 embarks on this mission, his sanity is slowly collapsing while he deals with some serious god complex and struggles with telling reality from dreams as he's constantly being thrown in and out of hypersleep for his space travels. Here, at the start of The Parallax 2, we can see his reluctance to go on with the mission, debating whether humanity really deserves to keep existing after what they've done to life itself. His instincts tell him to end it all, but his mission is to keep going (this is the indecisiveness we find in this song). The one thing keeping him pushing forward is hope that his lover found the letter he left for her, explaining how much he loved her and why he had to leave on this mission (this is the "will it be found?..." part of the lyrics in this song).
On the other hand we have Prospect 1. A much more normal dude who's kind of a dumbass and in Swim to the Moon decided to put his ass on a boat and let himself drift off into the ocean because he was disillusioned with life. He ends up regretting that decission and valuing what he left behind when he sees how stupid his idea was and how he's doomed himself. He ends up surviving this trip, stranded on an island that will be the last destination of Prospect 2 in his mission. What makes this guy relevant is that he's like a mirrored version of P2. They're a parallax of the same being (hence the album's name), and their encounter is going to be the tipping point for P2 to make a decission about his dilemma. That's what the crux of the story explored in The Parallax 2 is about, as well as to show just how evil and fucked up those Night Owl characters I mentioned earlier really are.

With those disjointed pieces, there is still an overarching leitmotif that I would suggest that, maybe, it is more 'revelatory' or 'expanding over time,' than well established from the get-go. In a literary sense, I would liken this style to Iain Banks' writing.
Those 'upbeat' parts of the song, show how the protagonist is slowly losing his mind, i.e. he is almost happy that he is flensing away the skin of his face because he thinks he will become a different person, if he does.
BTW, the 'planet' and the folder are, wholly, important to the story and the time-flow of the story is not linear.
Also, there is a larger theme over the whole album that kind of makes sense when comparing tracks and, importantly, lyrics and their themes.
I appreciate your point-of-view, Bryan, because I think your hang-ups are the same as many other listeners' and you voice them really concisely.

A full album review of Parallax 2 would be awesome. Although you've done Extremophile Elite and Bloom from P2. It's a journey. Melting City and Black Box have some amazing melodic clean sections.

The fretless bass also add some organic feel.
This song really works a lot better while youre listening to the album - same with some of the other songs like melting city

I get where you're going. They don't do much acoustics, vocal harmonies or even volume dynamics though (do they?)
@@progperljungman8218 They do actually. Desert of Song has great acoustics. Vocal harmonies show up in many songs as well between the guitar player Paul and the vocalist Tommy.

I used to listen to them a lot, but then sorta grew tired of them for some reason. This, however, is what I still love from their library. Not sure what decides if it's a hit or a miss for me.
I'm with you. Thought they were the greatest thing for a couple of years. Still like them a lot, but nothing like before. Same thing with e.g. Devin Townsend. Predictable unpredictability...
I think many fans see Future Sequence as BTBAM at their best and so the following albums are just not as good and maybe tryin to copy Future Sequence
They are still my favorite band and I love everything they do 😍 and yes Per, they are predictably unpredictable and that is what I love about them. After multiple listens, things make more sense to me with them.

@@progperljungman8218 I’m not mad Per, lol. They are “a lot of a lot” (thanks for that description Bryan, I use it all the time). It took me several listens to even like Colors 2 and now I freaking love it. But at first I was like underwhelmed and saying it’s just BTBAM being BTBAM.
You would probably enjoy automata but you would definitely jive more with the coma ecliptic I think. Way more clean work, melodic ideas and more traditional structure. Its they're most restrained album
Based on name length I'm expecting 'The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die' in the week
It's weird, I stopped listening to individual tracks by this band. Their albums as a whole are just a much better listening experience. And this is my favorite band of all time (next to Rush of course) and I think Parallax 1 EP is largely overlooked, some of my favorite moments across their entire discography are on it. I always listen to 1 and 2 together.
Yes, Parallax 1 is overlooked and I read somewhere that they don’t play it live because of the complexity. I love how P1 continues after Swim to the Moon then goes to P2. It’s just an awesome journey. And I find it difficult to just listen to one track even from Alaska lol

Honestly check out Coma Ecliptic rather than Automata. Coma is, to me, their most cohesive work and (if I've pinned your tastes well enough) probably the most appealing to your musical sensibilities of anything btbam has put out.
You should check out Metal Music Theory, a youtube channel with a lot of theory analysis. The guy made a thesis on this song being a sonata, an interesting watch if you have the time

this whole album is fantastic. its my favorite album of theirs by far, and the only album in general that tops it for me is Periphery's Juggernaut
