  • I review this first year of the E60 generation BMW M5 with it's sweet V10 engine and SMG automated-manual transmission. I talk about how it compares to the older and newer M5s and where I think it'll stand in BMW M history. What do you think of the 2006 BMW M5? Huge thanks to Ron and Sport Dimensions for providing this mint condition, low-mileage example of the E60 M5! Check out what these guys do in motorsports and performance! www.sd.team

    I love how majority of the people who comment have not owned one but like to copy and post how unreliable the car is. Every high performance vehicle has their faults, and most have a "catastrophic" failure weak point. It's like if you mod your vehicle to handle more boost - cracked head please.

      people like to parrot all the shit they read on the internet to sound smart
      was the car high on maintenance yes
      did some had problem with the rods bearings yes
      but people buy this car now under 20 000$ and dont think it will cost the maintenance of a 125 000$ car
      if you dont treat this car right it will fight back
      wait until the oil is at temperature before hard driving the car help alot with the rod bearings ''flaw''
      i love mine and I never know if i will get rid of it

      Yes, have any of these haters seen the service costs of any modern high performance car, obviously not, i have owned mine for 3 years now, and loved every minute, i guess if you have to moan about maintanance costs, you cant afford one, stick to the toyota boys.

    • @simonnim321

      I really think the audience was misunderstood for this car. I track mines and while sure, not the best in turns can make up the time on straights. It's actually quite adequate in turns. The SMG comes alive on the track. Somewhere few people who have even tested this vehicle will take it.

    It’s a great car and it’s been very reliable because I have it serviced when it’s due by either Bmw or a specialist that knows these cars , I warm the car up by keeping the revs below 3k until at working temperature this also warms the gearbox at the same time this is a must , only use 10w-60 oil ( I use Castrol Edge for M series cars ) , also when the car is driven hard switch the M button off and let it have a breather for 20 mins so the gearbox can cool down this prolongs the life of the clutch as well and if your worried about the rod bearings have the oil sampled every two years or every oil change I have mine done every two years because I don’t use it as a daily driver which I don’t recommend this car is more of a enthusiast car tbh ... there is one thing to check when purchasing and that is have the throttle actuators been replaced because this is something that will go wrong I had mine done two years ago at a cost of £620 by a company called Rebuild not far from me just outside southeast London the guys name is Jason I highly recommend he also updates the circuit board at the same time this is a world wide service....these cars will go wrong if they are abused day in day out which unfortunately happens and these are always the negative comments that reach the forums.... I hope this info helps out and if your thinking of purchasing one of these magnificent cars find the right one and keep hold of it because the good ones are becoming quite rare now plus it’s going up slowly and will become a future classic 😎👍🇬🇧

    I own a e60 m5 2008 with 98000 kilometers on it. The car is so smooth and fast, and with the v10 under the hood and meisterchaft muffler at the end makes tis car so special. Here in Norway a lot of them is sleeping in the garage, I am using mine every day ( but not in the winter) the only negative about the car is the fuel but it doesnt matter at the end of the day because of the joy the car gives you. I have put down 3-4000 kilometers since I bought it ( bought it in 2019 summer ) and the only issue I had was the thermostat ( those thermostat on this cars is getting bad when they are close to 100000km so mine was open and the car started to idle 900rpm when waiting for the red light) and the trunk modul not working after the wires cut off.

    I bought a 2008 with 100k miles on it a year ago for 16 grand from the shadiest looking car dealer you ever saw. So far I haven’t had any major issues and have only had to perform routine maintenance. In my opinion you won’t find a finer sports car with this kind of performance for the price point offered. Is there a potential for high maintenance costs? Sure. But the car is paid off and that means I can afford the maintenance. That being said, do your research and maintain the car yourself as much as possible and it will treat you right.

    Matt e39 or E60 now that you've driven them back to back? I agree e60 is just the right size before everything got boated. I hunted long and hard for the poor man 's version of this as a 3 year CPO in a last year 2010 e60 535i with the N54 Turbo and factory MSport package. That gives you the M5 style bodykit, interior, alcantara headliner and 18 m5 style wheels on square setup. Really fun, incredible/telepathic handling (once you ditch the runflats) and very reliable for a BMW. Gets 22mpg in ugly commute traffic but 30 highway. Yes repairs are a bit cringeworthy (electric water pump?!) like any modern bimmer with all the plastic but the motor and trans are rock solid. Find a good one that's been well serviced and not modded while they are the bottom of the depreciation curve! If you have the guts and deep pockets the e60 M5 manual is really something else and that engine sounds simply amazing. All that being said I would take an e39 M5 instead today all day long!

    This video is a bit old now I know but needs couple of corrections: 1) SMG shift is not slow (65 milliseconds) when you disable TC and select the (hidden) 6th aggression setting, and 2) 0-to-60 is 4.2sec for us with Euro spec SMG SW because we get 4,100RPM LC, instead of USA spec which I think is only 1,500... IIRC.

    We can pretty much conclude that this is the most desirable car not to buy. If the price of these E60’s stays reasonable in the used car market then I’d say that if you LOVE cars, more specifically you’re REALLY into BMW’s AND you have a well paying job with relatively minimal obligations in the way of monthly bills then I’d say that the E60 M5 would suit you, of course you definitely want to be well versed on this generation of M5, know what to look for and most importantly know what to EXPECT. Because if you’re not careful you can lose the engine and that’s a $40k unit so there’s no going back. One must perform preventative maintenance on the E60’s in order to avoid falling into that hole.

      It's actually a single clutch and not a dual clutch which shifts like a true manual, that's why it's slow.

    • @tonyh4807
      @tonyh4807 4 роки тому

      iPhoneAppReviewer nope it won’t. 6 gears in the s85 makes for better torque delivery due to lesser gears resulting in better torque multiplication when you shift

    • @iPhoneAppReviewer
      @iPhoneAppReviewer 4 роки тому +1

      Tony H better torque delivery from an engine already low on torque to begin with, not really a huge benefit considering you won’t get over 200mph with the 6 speed.

    • @tonyh4807
      @tonyh4807 4 роки тому

      iPhoneAppReviewer lol no you have no idea what you are talking about. If you use the flywheel and clutch from the SMG M5 and mate it to a manual gearbox from a e9x m3, the manual’s speed limit remains the same as the SMG. And plus the clutch and flywheel of the smg m3 mates perfectly to the e9x manual gearbox. You can remove the speed limiter on both the smg and manual and it can make speeds up to 360kmh. How would I know about this? Because my friend previously owned the ONLY manual e60 m5 in Australia. There was no manual e60 m5s produced for the European and australian markets.
      Plus I much rather feeling the raw and mechanical driving experience of a manual high revving tingling down your spine howling v10 than an automatic v10. I have a 2017 f80 m3 DCT as a daily driver running on catless downpipes, e85 custom tune, m performance exhaust, csf top mount intercooler and bmc intake filters. It’s runs mid to high 10s down the quarter consistently.
      I was choosing between getting a e60 m5 and then manual swapping it with a e9x m3 manual wrecked car but found out it was too much effort. So I got myself a 2010 Audi R8 v10 in manual with apr custom tune, fabspeed exhaust, Reid intakes and a sprintbox. Planning to put more mods on it especially in brakes and suspension so I can take it to the track and make it a pure track car
      There’s no better feeling than rowing the gears of a high revving exotic sounding v10!

    Great video, although the earlier models only came in smg later models with the 3 pedals will go up in value. These cars require warm up, people who are willing to maintain a vehicle of this caliber, and oil changes. I’ve got 38k on my car, warm it up, get on the highway and have fun. It’s hysterical how many people talk about this car as if they ever owned one. Btw I also had an e30 m3 and a e34 m5. They all cost money to maintain.

    Bought my e60 6 speed m5 nine years ago at about 20,000 miles. Today at 168,000+ miles of baby hauling, track days, and airstrips. Hard to beat my 6 speed v10 in a tunnel: ua-cam.com/video/nTLQ3K_GR4M/v-deo.html
    LOL at the unreliable comments from BALLERS on beer budgets and caviar dreams. Lots of these cars where driven hard and put away wet by owners that couldn't really afford ownership. Not many high revving v10s from Porsche, Lamborghini, or LFA could make it past 30,000 miles without extensive maintenance/money. The clapped out examples make for internet lore, while the best examples rarely trade hands.
