BMW M5 Complete History - E28 to F90
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 січ 2020
- The BMW M5 has reigned as king of the super saloons for well over 3 decades now, with the latest F90 M5 Competition cementing its legendary status. In this special feature, Paul and Tiff look back at every generation of the BMW M5 ever produced starting in 1984, getting behind the wheel of the E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, and F90. They explore how the car has evolved over the years, from the original M1-engined car of the 1980s, to today's all wheel drive V8 monster. And of course, they couldn't help get the original M5 drifting and the M5 Competition drifting.

Which one for you? E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, or F90?
e28, no question.
E60
E60.
Tiff sir you made us love this when it was filmed in fifth gear.
E28
E39!
The E39 M5, unmatched, timeless, classy, beautiful.
The bMW E39 M5 are Lovely JaPan Red
Totally agree
👏👏👏
Have had my baby since 2007.... absolutely a classic!!
My favorite car
E34 M5 must be one of the most beautiful cars ever made
agreed. That color in the video or white.
Black ftw- the red is more iconic tho
Yes. Yes it truely was.
We have one in grey, absolute classic
@@javalam7769 Sebring grey is the word your looking for
Seeing Tiff’s legendary review of the E60 when I was 10 years old cemented the dream to have one. I bought one a month ago 🙌🏻
Brilliant!!! You know it’s good when it still brings a smile to his face all these years on!
Does it sound like a diesel when you start it up 😂
Andrew Xie First time I’ve seen a comment like this. When I start mine, it just sounds like an angry bear due to the exhaust. Lol
I bet u called it the Godzilla competition...
Wow the E34 still looks better than the late latest BMWs of this generation... Now days the japanese and the Korean economy cars look more exitic than the new BMWs. how could BMW screw it up
James May once said "All M5's have been fantastic, there's never been a bad one"...and he's right. They are ALL awesome! Happy with my 2003 Carbon black E39. Best car I've ever owned.
We love James May!
It blew my mind when BMW put a V10 in a M5😮 the sound it made was iconic
It does honestly sound biblical 👌🏻
Reliability seems to be an issue though
Sure coz that's all it had, the sound and not a go. No torque... I would take turbo everytime no matter the sound crap cliche
E39 has to be one of my favourite M5’s. It’s aged sooooooo well. It’s beautifully proportioned in my eyes.
Love the E60 too, especially in touring format. A stunning engine that we’ll never ever see again.
The F10 leave s me a bit cold if I’m honest. Do like the latest F90 though...the comp is staggeringly fast too.
My uncle had a BMW dealership when the first M5 came out. He had his rebadged "520i" and was hunting down Porsches and Ferraris. 😃
Great to see Tiff again.
Haha sounds like fun!
Your uncle is a f*cking legend, thats what he is!
LOL thats a funny story, but you couldn't get away with that today! The current model M5s are so pumped up and obvious looking compared to the E28 and E34 that are real sleepers. Nobody would be fooled.

Tiff has been hiding like a Needell in a haystack.
Oh dear 😂
E34 - pure mafia car
E39 - best looking BMW ever
E60 - best sounding car ever
Yes, the E39 truely is a beautiful car!
🙌
True about the E34!
Nah the E60 isn't the best sounding car
I agree but must be specific E60 M5 was best sounding Bmw ever but for overall other car, there's more for example like Lexus LFA, Porsche Carrera GT, Lamborghini Murcielago SV, Mazda 787B race car, etc....
i agree with all except the real mafia car is the E38 bulletproof one hahaha
I love Tiffs enthusiastic rambling as he’s powersliding.
Very nostalgic.
He does it very well, both powersliding and rambling! Class act 🙂
The first fast car i drove was the E60 M5 at age 18.
Made me scared, ecstatic and *emotional* all at the same time.
Ha! Great memories!
I love Tiff!!! He is just a legend. We will riot in the streets if he's not on tv.
Watch this space!
No you wont. You'll just go back to being as submissive as always.
Martin Allen Fair enough
I saw an E34 M5 parked in downtown San Francisco probably around 2014. The car was black and IMMACULATE.
I only knew a little about M cars then (have now had an F82 M4 for 4 years) but I was mesmerized by that E34. I walked around and looked at it for so long that I ran a few minutes late to my meeting. It was mindbogglingly beautiful. When I came back out to my rental, the M was gone. I have never seen another E34 M5 since then..and will probably never see one quite like that one from SF :o(
E34 looks stunning!!!!
E39 by far the best looking car here, maybe even of all time. It's that or the E46 M3 imo
Oscar Eriksson totally agree....I currently own both models:)
@@fazanofazano7683 Living the dream then. Never felt so jealous by a UA-cam comment :(

But wishing you well!
I'm so lucky I bought these cars years ago and held on to them. I'm hoping they will be worth a pretty penny one day....both have less than 60000 orig miles on them too.

The E39 is the best of old and new
Thanks to Tiff, I wanted the E39 and E60 since 14 , only took me 18 years to have both in my garage, Worth every bit of trouble though.
the E39 will always remain my favortie. but they are all good, thats just how it is
This is very true!
Watching that E28 M5 powerslide, yeah that's happiness for me!
BMW M, the original and best super-saloon! Everyone else is just imitating if we are being honest.
They must be Irish then because most cars are front wheel drive.
dalitis dalitis
Being honest, traded in my F90 M5 for a 991.2 Turbo S

dalitis dalitis Oh I see what you mean, sorry. I was comparing BMW M to others.
That E39 and E34 oh man how in beautiful condition they are.
Nothing like the E28 in terms of looks & the E60 in terms of noise. And the icing on the cake is gotta be Tiff.
Welcome back Tiff....where have you been hiding him ? 😂
More features with Tiff coming soon, don’t worry 😉
E34 is so gorgeous!
Beautiful...I was just thinking right now it may be the best looking M5 to me...
It is lovely!
E34 is the ultimate drift king car, simply the best and most reliable BMW ever made
Sure is proven on the day 👮♂️😉 follow our bmw_specialis_medway instagram page.
Beka Machu....I'd have to agree with you. I never had a E34 M5 but I did have a 525, 535 ,540 , and the ridiculously small 3.0 V8 E34 530. They where all reliable except the V8 ,530i with the bad cylinder walls
It’s the most affordable genuine Bmw Motorsport built car .. no mass produced nonsenses just a quality hand built car that was reliable fast and very well made
AGREED
As an owner of a 1991 E34 M5, they are far from the most reliable BMW ever made 😂😂😂. 3 words: Self Leveling Suspension
E34 for me. Absolutely timeless styling. Love it !
E60 and tiff.
We loved you both since you were in fifth gear and we were just 16-17
Thank you very much!

E39 is the pinnacle of the M5. Also the best looking by far.
E34 for me.
Nice!!
The E60 M5 is becoming a future classic

E28 for me, it was my first BMW, got a shock when I first drove it properly 😊 live on the M5.
Great video, congrats guys! This guys, and especially Tiff is a legend! God...I'm so in love with this E28 and E34...nothing like old beemers.
E34 is still my favourite but I remember watching Tiff's epic E39 test drive on Top Gear.
Great to hear 🙂
There is a Clarkson vid with tiff in E39 and Clarkson in a Jaaaaagg, Clarkson got a very good driving lesson following Tiff that day :)
E28 for me with the engine out of the M1. Straight 6's always sound great. Welcome back Tiff.
👍🏻
I love them all but E34 has aged the most gracefully IMHO. Simply beautiful.
World is full of V8 sedans, but E60 with V10 and its sound is something special. Definitely my favorite.
Own both an E60 and F10 Competition and despite how much I love the power of the F10 nothing beats that V10 going to over 8K RPM in a tunnel!
🎶 👌🏻
Yeah but it's just all noise and no torque. F10 at least have some pulling power...
@@martinkulik9466 It has more torque than a Lamborghini Gallardo released in the same year and can do over 200mph...the V10 is all about top end (which even 15 years after release can still hold its own)...all whilst sounding absolutely incredible!
@@Biggus_Dickus_69 no too sure about that. I wouldn't probably swap m5 or e92 m3 for my 335d coupe diesel tbh, just for that torque. they are both famous for noise, but ppl forgot how hollow they feel and have to be revved to actually move forward. I prefer torquey turbo cars...
@@martinkulik9466 lol never heard anyone say that before but each to their own...you're in the 1% minority for sure lol.
I have a 19' M4 as well and I like it a lot but the sound is atrocious and leaves me hollow as hell compared to the E60 or even F10. I've never heard of anyone say a V10 leaves them hollow and prefer a 335d over it no offence lol. Put it like this the M4 is the only car I've ever owned that I DON'T put my foot down in a tunnel as I find the sound cringe lmao.
For me, I absolutely love the look of the new F90. I'm not one for nostalgia, and I 100% embrace change. Loved this video and Tiff sir, you are a legend!
The E39 M5 review that Tiff was talking about is one of my most memorable and favourite reviews from old Top Gear. I go back and rewatch it every once in a while just to see that awesome seemless drift. It's also the review that made me fall in love with the E39 M5.
Every now and then I search for Timothy’s review on the E39, the back to the future one. Always brings a smile to my face.
Tiff Needell makes the videos worth the watch. For me I have to have the 3 cars in the middle as a must! E34, old school, E39 looks the muscle, E60 the V10 sounds the part!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s great to have him onboard.
E28 is the best looking, and glad Tiff is back.😁
He never went anywhere! We have just been very busy with another project, but we have lots coming on UA-cam with existing and new faces 🙂
@@lovecarsTV Good work, new blood is always necessary, after all someone has to pick up the mantle from the previous generation 😁
Something very homely very nostalgic, when I'd sit and watch Tiff and the car reviews on TV, I can't explain this video just made me smile. Thank you!
Had a great day filming with you guys, the M5 lineage is just fantastic. Icing on the cake was Tiff choosing my car as his favourite! Cheers @LoveCars 👍🏻
Thank you for coming along and helping us make this feature possible 👍🏻
The E39 was always my favorite. In my opinion it looks the best and I love that naturally aspirated v8.
Totally agree, Tiff: You can‘t go wrong with any of these cars. Lovely review!
Just a remark to the E60‘s SMG: yes, it‘s slow and jerky sometimes, especially in city traffic. But once you get the feeling for it, it suits that drive train! Just set it to a higher shift speed (not the highest), lift the throttle while shifting gears and it‘s buttery smooth.
It‘s a robotized manual! No one would keep pressing the throttle to the floor while pushing the clutch...
Actually Tiff mentioned this techinique when testing E60 M5 for the first time in Fifth Gear.
I still come back to watch this now and again Paul. Fabulous. 😁
That E28 is a thing of beauty!!
Cracking work as always team!
Great vid guys... really happy to see Tiff, a true legend!
Thank you. We’re very lucky to have him on here
OK there is a need for some clarification regarding the E34 (My Favorite M5, of which I've owned two). So from 1989 until 1992 it came with the 3,6l Straight Six (S38B36). For model year 1992 the engine was upgraded to 3,8 (S38B38), with an improved vacuum intake system and the introduction of the Nürburgring Package option - which initially had nothing to do with the gearbox but consisted of the EDC Electronic dambers, Servotronic adaptive steering as well as wider rear tires/rims (255 instead of 235). The 6 speed gearbox was introduced as standard on the (last) 1995 Model year, at which point the Nürburgring package was also made standard equipment. Cheers!
Thank you very much and sorry for any confusion
Tiff drifting the E39 M5 on top gear is the reason I own one today.
That and the Porsche turbo review were great.
E34 is the best looking out of all of them, such an attractive looking vehicle, timeless design.
E39 forever!
E39, it‘s just timeless❤️
E60 for me however, I'd like to have all in my stable. Tiff power slides never get old. Love it guys, keep the content coming.
I love and owned a Few E39s and thanks to Tiffs original drift video is what made me fall in love with that generation M5
I was worried I wouldn't see Tiff with the rear end peeling tyres in a cloud of smoke. Thankfully my fears were quashed. As a household with 2 current generation 5 series (saloon and tourer) I would opt for the new Competition M5 if I could. Shame there is no tourer M5 version for the dog to enjoy!
M5 Comp Touring would be epic!!!
Fantastic as always lovecars team! I would have the legendary E39!

Love watching Tiff drive these legendary BMW's
So glad to see Tiff back!! He’s my FAVORITE of all TIME!!! Woooooohooo!!!
Super cool video and I have one, a E34 M5 from 1995, so that gets my vote! But what was mentioned that the all 3.8s have the 6-speed gearbox is not correct, that was only the last year so the 1995 model. All 3.8 had the EDC dampers, but only the ones with the Nürburgring package had the switch inside, which was then standard on all 1995 models also.
Amen! Same car 😉👍
Sorry Tiff, but the E34 is the best looking M5 ever.
Always ask my neighbor about the E34, my fav M5 design. Second and last on my list is E60 for the v10 . I got a chance to drive in one but the powertrain reliabilty makes me so nervous and would not be my only car.
Tiff throwing shade at Top Gear and Fifth gear as gracefully as possible. Love it ❤
That 39 has in better condition than new... a real credit to the owner.
All models have something to offer - this would be a great BMW dream garage
The e61 is my favourite M5. Now THAT was a sleeper!
E34 M5 Euro Spec, hopefully can become an obtainable dream car for me. The last Hand Build M5 and by far the most reliable with extraordinary build quality.
Let us know when you hit your goal 👍🏻
Darksyne.... yes they where truly super reliable
Very underrated chanel just love Tiffs happiness and skills behind the wheel which I get only from Tiff or Chriss Harris.
For me its e34 its just most insane looking one. Have myself e60 535d remap for everyday blast but the petrol sound is missing so I have cl 600 v12 for the weekends. Thank you for this gents you amazing as always !
Every time I see a e39 review its so respectful of the car and just so relaxed, such a great car.
My favorite one E34 M5 Touring
Finally got around to watching this brilliant video, top top work gents 👋👌❤️👊 PS so glad Tiff mentioned the fat wheel
Haha thanks Joe, thought you would like that mention too!
This is the best documentary about M5s!!!!
Fantastic having Tiff, it's the reason I come and these productions are really getting exciting!
*E34 3.8 all day long*
Old M5s were not bling/ "look at me cars", but real wolves in sheeps clothing.Only the connoisseur would know and give you the nod of approval. Newer M5s are technical marvels and faster ( I loved the E60) *BUT* the increasing ///M badges overload, gimmickery and bling take away the original stealth - which made them cool in the first place......
Spot on
Agreed. They have all got a spot in my dream garage but I've got a special boner for the e34.
Also the E34 it's the last hand made M car made.
Then the engine, the S38B38 we saw in the clip is the last direct decedent from the first racing straight 6 Motorsport division ever made.
Worth mentioning as well that the S38B38 is the biggest straight six BMW has ever made.
This is the last evolution with pure racing pedigree all the way from the M49/2 from the E9 CSL Batmobil -> M88 from the M1 Pro Car -> M88/1 from the road version M1 ->M88/3, the one we saw in the clip in the e28 (also in the M635CSi) and finally the S38 generation with the 3.6 first released and then with the best of them all the S38b38.
The true engine blood line ends with the E34.
So, you want the same racing pedigree that Ferrari built their empire around?
Get the E34 M5 3.8 - it is is even better since it is such a great automobile.
Not a car, an automobile.
Something unbelievably special.
I will not stop until I have one.
@@Glob3Tech Me too bro!
Stephen wonder how difficult it would be to up keep a car like that now. I found a 1991m5 for $11k but it needs a lot of work, kind of scary to think you can find parts for that car.

Growing up,I remember as a little kid in the late 80s and early 90s my dad taking me to school with you..my first love 💕/dream car BMW 3 series' ,,,soar in class my classic..and Even today my children believe in it too...love for life
Thank you for this great moments! What a collection of my dreams from the last 35 years! My 540ix must compensate my appetite of an M5
The things I would do for an E34 M5
I had an E28, all be it the M535i .. Still love the shape, the straight-6 engine, the manual dog-leg gearbox.. Ok it'll be blitzed by the modern car's abilities but sometimes it's more than the figures. That's the one i'd cherish and want to polish every week, and wouldn't kill me with repair costs.
Very well said, it isn’t always about blistering figures etc, it’s how a car makes you feel and the smile it puts on your face 👍🏻
Always nice to see Tiffs reviews, especially for BMWs. Thanks!
My first enjoyable history lesson. Thanks Tiff.
I absolutely love the E60 M5 to bits easily my favorite with the E39 and E28 following closely behind. That said, the new F90 is an amazing machine. Having driven one, it's one of the few new cars I feel a urge to have...if only my wallet felt the same way haha
e39s there going mad price wise
Yaaaas!
Thanks Tiff for another great video of the M5. The 1999 Top Gear vid cemented my love for the ///M division’s mid size offering and this edition is a great reprise!
Although the drifting in this clip reminds me more of your review of the Porsche 911 Turbo of the late 90’s where you drifted it around its predecessors....loved that ending!
Thanks Tiff!
Damn this is fantastic! Thanks for ripping it at the end with the E28 (S38) Tiff.
I absolutely love my E39 but if I was to have another M5 it would be the F10, sure the F90 performs better but the F10 cosmetically is a far more timeless design.
4syth ya the f90 looks odd especially the back of it
Such a great video. So hard to choose but the E39 probably comes on top, then E28, E60, E34, F10 and I guess then F90 even though it's a good car
The latest ones just don't move my soul...
Too refined, too artificial... 😕
E34 M5 always been my favourite.

Great stuff, awesome video!
But please, who told Tiff about the infamous but nonexisitent e34 "Nürburgring-Edition", which has been roaming the internet for decades? There is and never was a Nürburgring-Edition. What everybody ist referring to, is the Nürburgring Fahrwerkspaket, which was a regular option for the M5 from 12/91 (introduction of the 3,8 liter S38B38). It included bigger swaybars, Servotronic, staggered wheels, switch in dash to change suspension settings, etc. The option was discontinued in 5/94, when the last stage of the e34 M5 was introduced which had all these things as standard except the wheels and Servotronic.
Hello from an owner of currently 6 e34, including an M5 😎
Thank you for the information 👍🏻
It got 10 inch wheels on the back too.
@@markmcgrath9098
What do you mean by "too". 10" wide wheels were never offered from the factory, 9" was the widest available. 9" was standard for the touring (always staggered), included in the Nürburgring Fahrwerkspaket and standard again from 5/94 when 18" Styling 37 became standard. Other than that, M5s were delivered with 8" all around (until 5/94).
