Thanks for the washing-up liquid tip; I have just bought a gelli plate, but not yet used it, as I don't have acrylic paints, but I do have watercolours. I didn't want to buy yet more stuff - I can't move for accumulated crafting kit - but didn't know if watercolours could work as well. I shall try this, as I feel more confident having seen the video. Chris.
Love this! Never in a million years would I have thought to use watercolors, but you are a genius! One of my favorite 'looks' on a Gelli print so far! THANK YOU!!
Great technique! When you add the soap 1st, and print dries, can you use print in mixed media, adding other wet layers on it without it smearing or getting soapy?
Hi! Watercolours aren't permanent and will always smear when you add other wet layers to it. The dish soap doesn't change this. If you want to work on top of these prints without re-activating the pigments, you will need to fixate the print first. One way to do that is to Gelli print a thin layer of gel medium on top. As for the soapy part: I have experimented with more watercolour, felt tip pens and black fineliners on top of my dry prints and I haven't detected any soapiness. The prints (re-)acted just like any other watercolour background would! Have fun trying the technique!
Besides the scraping technique, I don’t see the purpose of doing the gel plate thing because you get the same results just making them directly on the paper if done correctly.
Index cards work well for this. And you can salt the paint before putting the paper down.
Fantastic technique and love the idea to use the soap to control the watercolors!!
Thank you Julie!

Beautiful technique. But The white lettering on the white background makes it hard to read the instructions
