Haha an old man? I am turning 70, and just now doing art over the past year. Absorbing like a sponge.
Congratulations and more power to you! 🎉
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos! I am a painter and am finding a new exciting medium which has opened up a different way to communicate. You are kind and generous with your advice and inspirational in your beautiful clours and textures. I am going to be 80 in a months time and never expected to be so obsessed again! Its a huge learning curve and learning what paints to use and how long to wait ! Thank you again
Advance Happy 80th! That is a great milestone and may the creative forces be with you!
@@artwhisperer88 thank you!!
Your plate will clean up absolutely fine with some baby oil. So glad you experimented with this and you will now see its potential. It does look just like lithography, and you can keep drawing into the original with pastels and charcoal too, and make fresh prints from your original. I loved your ghost and it’s complex marks. You could also make your ‘skeleton’ as your first mark making with black or another deep dark pastel, or even charcoal, though I find it will turn less black than pastel. Hand painted would work well too. I loved your surprise at the vividness of pastels! I was also surprised that they no longer were smudgy and messy! Gell plates are just so good to work with, they do so much!
Wonderful comment.
It is great how pastel colours stay lively when placed on gelli.
Pastels can be overlooked due to challenge of sealing without loss of vibrancy, or limits in multimedia.
The gelli keeps them firm and bright and beautifully integrated with acrylic in a way almost impossible to emulate otherwise..
You continue to make new modernism exciting, Fulton.
That cross hatching in the 2nd print is so interesting! I say wow to your experiment!
Wow I’m loving this transition from the pastels.
Love waching all your presentations over and over again. Like the calm voice.
I truly love watching your tutorials and listening to your soothing voice. I learn so much from you and am very grateful. Thank you so much for taking the time and care to share your knowledge, ideas and skills. Really inspiring.
I really enjoyed this video!! I have seen some people who use pastels on the gel plate, but not as boldly as you have here. That's what I love about your videos and what you are able to teach through them. As you have for yourself and for us, you have opened a new world of possibilities! I love both of the prints that you made and thank you so much!
Beautiful,loved the ghost 👻
Jimi Hendrix made strong music with experiments. These are important processes in creative search. Congratulations!
HI Fulton! I am so thrilled to see the results you achieved using pastels on your Gelli plate! I made some prints with pastels that I loved, but I placed the pastel directly on the plate and pulled the print, and the pastels stained my 2 5" x 7" plates, unfortunately. Using the pastels with a transfer method is definitely the way to go! Beautiful prints!
Thanks so much!
I love how the ghost print came out….really wonderful textures.
Thank you, the final results were awesome, thanks for showing us something new.
They're both great but I especially like the ghost print!
Great session..
Thank you for this video!
Enjoyed video found it interesting and informative lovely art piece..💛✍👩🎨🇨🇦🇺🇲💛
Very cool! I've been playing with pan pastels on gel plate. Amazing how many pulls you can get.
Loving this!!
Beautiful work!! The texture on the ghost print is amazing! And yes, it's a challenge to get all the color off the plate, but I find baby wipes work great, maybe it's the baby oil in them. That yellow-green color you liked is yellow ocher - it's my favorite too! You can get multiple prints off the same paper too - I use scrap paper to scribble on, then "stamp" onto the gel plate multiple times.
Thanks so much Katherine! Your gift will keep giving for years to come.
I think the second print is spectacular. I find it much more interesting than the first, although both are wonderful!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
The second one is my favourite. The technique makes me think of using the gelli plate in a totally different way. Thanks
Wow, the gelli plate is so versatile. You can print with so many types of art supplies.
That came out so cool.
Mid century modern stained glass!
The important thing is to keep the plate clean and well oiled and it does magical things!
Bonjour ,en fait ,avec des pastels très gras surtout et très pigmentés , le transfert se fait très facilement .Grand résultat....! Merci .A+ 🐯✒️🦜
The possibilities are endless.. both are exceptional.
Really great to see. I tried recently to do charcoal drawing on the plate, and it transferred beautifully. And you can save your drawings, refresh the media and use it over and over which is nice. Enjoyed your pastels they are both unique and great!
Thanks so much!
The ghost print is superb...I love the background marks. Thank you for sharing this!
Love it. So different. Thanks for experimenting.
Love the ghost print. It has a de Kooning like feel with all the wonderful random small dark marks. A real keeper.
This is wonderful! The variety and textures the pastels give the print are incredible... what an adventure! Thanks so much for sharing. 😊
Très beau résultat.
La méthode offre beaucoup de possibilités.
merci beaucoup! 💖💖
That came out beautiful! Interesting video, thanks for it!
Me encanta. Muchas gracias por esta iniciativa
Did you let the white background dry before putting your Blick watercolor paper on. This is a great technique.
Not completely. Most of the time the demo is in real time, not a time lapse. I hate those high speed art demos!
It takes guts to experiment with art. Big risk, big rewards. Now you can refine this technique and practice and adopt the parts you like.
I tried a soft pastel transfer, the way you did,. Worked fine. Then I thought that if I used black acrylic paint to pull the print it would look great because soft pastel on black paper is very nice. But it didn't work AT ALL. The pastelpigments were almost totally invisible, So you know. Nice to do some experiments though. Makes me laugh!
the best way to learn is by doing! Sometimes you win, sometimes not. 😎
How do the chalk pastels/ soft pastels work with light paint? Can you do oil pastels and soft pastels on the same paper with gelli plate?
This was one of my favorite coloring techniques as a child. I could draw intersecting lines on a paper and color them in over and over.I love to see what you did with the technique.
I really like the second print best.
Ich finde Deine Bilder toll!Habe mir schon sehr viel von Dir angesehen.Schade, das man Dein Kommentar nicht ins deutsche übersetzt hören kann.Danke für Deine Arbeit bzw.Kunst.
Crazy! Who knew. I really like the #1.
Oh, wow. What a cool print. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!

Wow, wow, wow. My first time watching your videos. This was surprising and so cool.
Thanks for watching!
Wow! Lovely work and thank you for sharing!❤
This experiment was a great success.

Hypnotic process! ❤❤❤

Hi Fulton, I want to firstly say a warm thank you for all of your inspiring work. Very therapeutic and informative! Secondly, I wonder if you can help me? I bought a large 16”x20” gelli plate but when I opened it I found that it doesn’t come in a clam shell case like the smaller ones do. I read somewhere that I can use copy paper but the largest size paper I have is cartridge paper which I ended up using. Now though I’m worried that I have damaged the plate and not sure how I can properly store it. Please could you let me know how you store yours?
hi Lucy, no worries, because a paper liner is not a good choice. I use either a sheet of acetate or clear plastic to store the plate. Since plastic is non porous, it prevents the plate from drying out.
Thanks so much for your speedy reply. I’ve ordered some acetate but it won’t come till Thursday. In the meantime is it better to just leave it on the table with no covering?

Thank you again, I very much appreciate you taking the time to answer.
Love the subtlety of the second print--wonder what would happen if you rubbed and blended the pastel in the first piece before printing? So many things to try, thanks for showing this!
They look fantastic. I wonder if you are going to "seal it".
liking your out of lines, and mark making.!! wonderful
Thanks so much!
Hello, what is the board called that you do your registration with? And where did you get it from?
This was a gift from a very talented viewer who wishes to remain anonymous. Please watch ua-cam.com/video/kZp6vtwpC_s/v-deo.html
Wow! This is a VERY cool video!
That ghost print is stunning! May I ask about the paper onto which you initially crew with the chalk pastels - it was transparent, but before I try - and as I don't want to ruin my gelli plate - does the paper used have a weight, a type or am I best advised to go and choose any parchment-type/tracing paper? Thank you in anticipation.......
the pastel transfer is done on white bond paper, similar to copy paper. you can use parchment or tracing paper if you wish.
Thank you for that - much appreciated. @@artwhisperer88
Wabi sabi my. Friend ❤
Both of these are wonderful. It’s amazing to watch you work. I wonder if these pastels need to be sealed or is the pastel imbedded in the acrylic?
the acrylic acts as a fixative when they combine on the paper. You can seal the artwork with additional sealer if you want.
They both turned out really beautiful! Machteld (the Netherlands)💖🍀
Hi Fulton, I am wondering if you would be kind enough to share how you go about framing your large monoprints. I remember watching your video a while back on your exhibit and the pieces looked beautiful. I remember you used black or white frames depending on the piece. I have made a couple of pieces that I would like to frame but find the 22x30” size quite expensive when doing custom matting and framing. I have framed my own photography over the years but pieces are quite a bit smaller. I fully understand if you don’t want to do a lesson on this so don’t feel obligated in any way. You have enough on your plate. Thanks so much for all you do share.
Hi Libby, framing larger pieces are best done professionally. I'm sure there are other channels dealing with DIY framing, but due to safety concerns handling plate glass etc. it's best to let the pros do it.
Thanks Fulton, I have been researching framing and agree with you regarding DIY framing. I have done a lot of smaller pieces so was just trying to figure out a sensible way to print larger pieces. I think it can be done, but I am concerned about the glass issue also. I am not a big fan of plexi either so would rather leave this to a pro framer. I always appreciate your advice on these things. Thank you again.
Great... your experiments are inspiring!
💖💖🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love them both. Thanks for share ❤
Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. Do you have to seal these now due to being pastels? Does the pastel scratch off?
surprisingly they don't smear, but you can seal them with additional sealer if you wish. I use mod podge matte.
Very nice!! Love it❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
I think I actually like the ghost print better than the first.
I love it!!!
looks or behaves like oil pastels? surprising and amazing prints, I would have to bury some of the black lines on the 2nd print somehow, but yea for your efforts!
You nailed it! I love this!
Thanks Carol!
I have my answer thanks !❤
Would a layer of clear gel on the plate first help with later pastel mark removal, provided pastels still transfer nicely?
in my opinion the clear gel reduces the plates ability to grab the pigment.
Very good result!!! Where to bus a gellabe plate so big?
gelliarts.com 18 in. x 24 in.
Way cool. I am a pastel artist. This is so amazing. I may have to try that. Is the last black pen you used a Posca pen?
yes
Beautiful 🎉
Thanks so much!
I would like to ask whether the pastels need to be "fixed" once pulled from the Gel Plate or has it already "glued " them to the paper. Fabulous video as ever, Fulton. Thankyou! Thankyou!
the acrylic paint seems to "fix" it. but you can seal it with fixative if you wish.
Do you think the caran’d Ache water soluble pastels crayons works the same , would U try it?
please watch ua-cam.com/video/xFacqxFr54w/v-deo.html
Hello, do you need to fix the pastel after this transfert ?
Did you try with oil pastel or oil painting like « cobra » wich is a waterable oil ? What kind of oil are you using for the gelli plate ? Best regards
you can seal it with matte varnish if you wish. I don't intend to
I really love this effect! What was the paper you used to color the pastels on? Does it have any special properties to speak of?
It's an inexpensive sketch pad for children's art class, 17 in. x 20 in. from Staples

What is that music you always play?
it's from epidemicsound.com, a website for content creators.
What kind of pastel did you use? OIL?
please read desciption box, they are not oil, but chalk
Are those oil pastels?
they are chalk pastels or soft pastels as they are called. A friend gave them to me because she was allergic to the dusty powder they create. Its a good idea to seal with a fixative when done.
Sorry I missed it somewhere. Are these chalk or oil pastels?
They are both beautiful! I’ve been binge watching your videos! Thank you
please read description box, thanks!
Is it soft or oil pastel?
Wonderful. Is it chalks or oil or wax pastels? Does it work with all of those? Thanks
in the description box
All you did was oil the plate ? I’ve tried this but colors were EXTREMELY PALE !
you are using oil pastels. I am using soft (chalk) pastels w3hich are totally different,
@@artwhisperer88oh, they looked like oil pastels …. No wonder lol thanks for clarifying ….
@@artwhisperer88came out pretty cool I think
@@jasonballinger3549 If at first you don't succeed....try again! Or recycle!
@@artwhisperer88 good advice !
What kind of paper did you use?
Blick watercolor paper. It is indicated in the description.
Can I get an address/po box to send you something? 😀😀
Please email me at fulton@fultonartdesign.com
Those are so different! What a cool process!
What type of pastels? Soft or oil?
soft pastels, very chalky
