Beginning Keto Diet: Part 3- KETO-ADAPTED

  • Adapting your body to burn fat instead of carbs involves five specific phases. These phases happen in a predictable order that have been researched and studied. Scientists documented the body’s transitions by entering patients into a study where they fasted for forty days. Each phase marks changes in blood chemistry and occurs at specific, scientifically predictable times. With hopes of not overwhelming you, I used three blogs to cover all five phases. In each phase I reviewed where you are in the time since your last carbohydrate, and what fuel source your body is using: ketones versus glucose. I also take note of your brain-fuel in each ketosis phase.
This is the third article covering ketosis phases four and five.

40 days, I joined my church for this length of fast. Day 3 - 5 was the most difficult regarding hunger pains. After that I have never felt more energized and cognitive. It was a great experience, but I never understood that producing ketones was a key to the euphoria. Thanks Dr Boz.

There has definitely been changes in my body through each phase to include fluttering in my chest and sometimes in my heart but I know it’s not a heart problem because I already had my heart thoroughly checked out to include a CT scan of my vessels which reveal ZERO all the way around...it was at this time I knew my electrolytes were imbalanced just enough to provide me feedback...I drink sole’ (a salt water solution), and take an electrolyte supplement. The higher my ketones the more I need this electrolyte supplement to keep night leg cramps and the fluttering chest away. I’ve adapted from Ketogenic to carnivore and am on day 90 of carnivore. My arthritis is almost gone. I have done a fast for 11 days which was an experience...being carnivore I fast by eating one meal a day but mostly I will have two small meals as too much protein tends to upset my stomach as I realize I am still healing. Inflammation is decreasing and I know I am just beginning to lose actual fat. It’s taken so long because after watching your videos I have a fatty liver and I am IR; I’ve lost 15 pounds...a slow process because of past physical abuse brought about by hand and fork in mouth disease. This morning my glucose is 99 which usually it’s 107 after a night of fasting 12+ hours. Thanks to your videos I stopped the gum (!) and within 24 hours I feel the difference. Typically my ketones are .2 - waking up to .9 this morning means I have stopped suppressing my liver with gum! Gum!!!! Thank you, I’ve watched you 3 Part videos several times each and will watch again until it’s ingrained so I can help others adapt too.

I have spent hours and hours watching so many different videos trying to understand all this. Finally someone has done an explanation on how it all works, and whats all involved. Thank you so much. After 4 weeks of intermittent fasting on my own I can maybe make this work properly. Thank you!

After watching this 3 part series I have to say that I possibly know why I am not fully fat adapted and in 1 more week makes it 5 months. Not a single weight loss or gain. I’ve been listening carefully to Dr Boz. I thought liquid stevia was okay to use for weight loss but apparently not. Dr Boz plainly said no artificial sweeteners. Also I am 62 and insulin resistant. And high fasting insulin also. I’m stubborn and won’t give up! Great series, super helpful. Thank you Dr Boz!

KenDBerryMD , I have watched all your videos and have just recently started to try the keto genic diet. I have lost 19 pounds since mid August , But I find myself struggling and when I do the Keytone strips test ,it’s just lightly pink so I feel like I’m not doing it well enough . I have been doing a 16 /8 intermittent fast ,but Dr. Boz has me confused because she first says zero calories during your fast but then says that she has bone broth and in another video says she has heavy cream in her coffee ,those things have calories. So can I have those during a fast and still enmity my liver?

@@machellekinslow3244 I'm recently back on keto.. Went off it for a year and feel horrible so here we go again.. I love Keto and yes you can do cream or MCT oil/coconut oil in your coffee in the mornings. I do bulletproof coffee, usually 2 cups. Don't forget to count your macros even though they aren't much.
If I want more coffee during the day I will have it either black or with heavy cream.
The nice thing is after a day or three the carb cravings go away and you feel much less hungry. Drink more water and try to eat in shorter and shorter windows. So if your doing 8 hr feeding windows now, cut back to 6 hrs, then 4 and eventually you will do 1 meal a day. Thats how it's worked for me anyway... Carb and sugar addiction is real and real hard to kick unless you do keto

I am 86 yrs. young, no medications, still strong and active, my fasting glucose is and has been all my life at 100, I am a sugar holic, and I have tried every diet and every exercise for several years, and for the last year I have been working on Keto. but I have not been brave enough to FAST! Well today I did a 24 hour fast, no food or water and I lost 3 and a half pounds. and at the end of the day my ketostix showed a [small] amt. of ketones. I am 5' 7" tall and weigh 205 pounds, I want to get down to about 160

I am a 65 year old woman suffering from Obesity all my life and now degenerative bone disease in my knees likely due to being overweight since I was 12 years old. I tried every single diet you can name, every diet pill and all they did was wreck my body more. I even tried the Keto diet but obviously it didn't (then) as I didn't do it right since I am watching her videos. I retired in January 2020, and well we all know what happened in February! On July 1, 2020, I decided to give Keto my last try. I am not calling it a "diet", I call it my new eating program. I've lost 10lbs (and not happy, thinking I should have lost more) so, I started watching another video with another doctor (which I won't name.) he was good but too technical for me. I saw Dr. Boz in the line up and thought "she makes sense to me" okay I'll try one more and I am now hooked on her videos as she explains everything so well and in laymen terms. God thank you for answering my prayers and Thank you Dr. Boz for your great videos. I feel hope and a lot more understanding of the Keto plan. I want to watch as many as her videos as possible and re-watch until I finally get it... Today is August 1, 2020.... I'll keep in touch

Just wonderful and informative, the reason for following low carbs diet is my circumstances
for few years suffering from high inflammation of skin tissue and joint pain.Medifications thus
help but my regular doctor did not offer any answer to the problem,Now on 16 hours fasting
for 2 months and feel recurrence of gout less frequent maybe over in due time

I had experienced the best brain function during a 21 day water only fasting. The best mental power, the excellent memory, the quick responses made me back to age of 20. But the best brain function gone when I back to normal carb diet.

Great info. I would also check out Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Jeff Volek. Dr. Volek's research has shown pretty conclusive evidence that human brains PREFER ketones as primary energy source, as well as skeletal muscle.

I'm on my 8th day of keto and have lost around 3 cm of waist (don't have a scale so I measure in centimeters, I started at 75)... So excited for the rest!, your explanation was really clear except for the timing, you sometimes talk about weeks then hours so I'm confused... If I don't have diabetes (or any issue that I know of) in which stage should I be in at day 8?.
I have noticed I'm sleeping heavier than usual (I was already a heavy sleeper but now I'm even drooling in my sleep haha) and I rarely have really small cravings for sugar

The fast is very important, as the Keto craziness of eating all the fat and protein you want will cause you to gain weight. You can't get around the law of, if you take in more calories then you burn, you will gain weight. If you take in less calories then you burn you will lose weight. That is why one of the scientifically proven methods to increase lifespan is a calorie restricted diet. Also if you eat all the fat and protein you want you increase the likelihood of arterial disease and cancer. Remember they pump the factory farm animals with drugs, hormones and genetically modified feed (not to mention other rendered dead animals/animal parts they feed them).

Great Series! if you have a stubborn glucose problem does a longer fast help bring it under control faster? Or is it the switching in and out of fasting that makes the body handle glucose better?

My brother and sisters (and myself) have "low renal threshold" or renal glycosuria. We spill sugar in our urine at an excessive rate. Because of this, I have always told myself "go ahead, eat that candy!". I wonder how my body (kidneys) will adapt to a keto diet.

How does exercise fit into the equation, does moderate to intense exercise empty the liver faster thus speed up the whole keto process?
