Honestly, I’ve been to Sturgis twice. I love the town and the people there. I also love the riding around there: the Black Hills, the Devil’s Thumb, the Bear’s Tooth Pass, Cody, the Needles, Mt Rushmore . . . Fantastic! I have never been during the rally, I figger I can get drunk and fall down anywhere. This is one of the finest riding areas in the world, everyone should check it out, but not everyone should go during the rally.

Was stationed at nearby Ellsworth AFB years ago. Didn't have a bike at the time but went to Sturgis for the rally. Great time, lot's of scantily clad ladies! Fun to see the contrast by going back through Sturgis when there's no rally going on. Just a quiet, sleepy little town.

Appreciate that service you put in over there in vietnam. It was a little before my time but I've got nothing respect for fellows that did your country's duty over there. Ride long and ride hard and safe travels along the way brother.

I personally know some guys from one of the major 1%er clubs. And the #1 thing to know about them is they are regular guys and treat them as such but you have to show them respect. They are usually really nice guys and won't give you a problem but if you act stupid they will deal with you in a way that you won't like. I went into a bar one day a bunch of bikes outside I walked in and it was mainly 1%ers and I politely approached one of the nearest guys and asked him if it was a private party or if I was allowed there the guy smiled and said "absolutely your welcome but thanks for asking"

I was at Sturgis 2018 when I visted my Host Family which are from Minnesota.
I am from Germany and my english wasn't / isn't the best, still no problems at all.
As long as you behave, have respect and don't pretend to be something you aren't you should not have any problems.
I was 18 at that time and I really have to say the people who were the kindest to me where the ones the media always portrays as the worst..
    "Give Respect, Get Respect" ;-)
Hope to make it to Sturgis this year...

He's pretty much dead on.. I went this year and had the best ride of my life. Didn't see any 1% until we drove home through Colorado and seen some Angel's. We minded our own business and no trouble. Not bad for about 9 Mexicans riding at Sturgis. No profiling, no racist run ins. People we met were all nice, especially in Cheyenne. Bucket list ride for me.

I no longer have much in common with most of the activities that go on at the big Rallies being I rarely drink and am married with Grandkids and really no longer enjoy huge crowds ....
I can say that I was driving my car ( in 1996 ) from Arkansas to Seattle and broke down just outside where the rally was going on and about 5 bikes pulled up and helped me by going and getting me a fan belt and also helped me install it .
They refused to take money for their time and trouble...
Until I offered a couple of cases of beer and they accepted and even invited me to their camp but I was on a tight schedule and thanked them but declined .
They were all from a very well known 1 percenter group but they could not have been more helpful to me .
I have never really had a bad experience with any of the clubs I've run across...
So if you want to go and enjoy one of the rallies and your hesitation is based on the attendance of some of the clubs I would say go and enjoy yourself unless you are an asshole you are unlikely to have any problems.
I'm not trying to say all clubs are boy scouts but I also never judge anyone based on media hype .......
My policy in general is to treat people how I want to be treated and that has served me well .

it can be crowded with bikes in the traffic jam areas, but not any worse than the st croix river or lake superior north shore (my home riding area) during high season in rush hour. you can be stuck behind some motorhomes or in some bikes......there are plenty of ways to avoid traffic out there and the crowds are down from the mid 90's.

If you just want to enjoy the area go after the Rally when there isn't as be much traffic. I've done both and love the area and there's tons of great riding there. Rooms are a lot cheaper after the Rally too. Greed of the vendors and store owners is the Rally's biggest challenge in years to come.

Like some, I see trouble always with crowds, and the small amount of bothersome character spoken of here is enough to tell me, a) could be worse, may be worse, b) have to be on guard every second of your stay, no relaxing, c) noise everywhere, NOT a real camping experience.
Aside of that, I LIVE for the Twisties, and damned if I want to share the roads with a lot of drunken/stoned/clueless flower sniffers who can barely ride from point A to B without roadblocking everyone behind them.
No thanks, I'll come in the off seasons, do our thing, and camp in peace. Nothing left to prove at 65 and 40 yrs. riding. Each to their own.

As a Daytona area firefighter and a Harley rider, I've found that the inexperienced & the occasional weekend only riders are a major concern. And of course then there's the guys who can't handle their liquor.
No doubt Sturgis has the same issues, I sure do love that scenery out West though. Especially up near Custer.
Give my first video a view when you get a chance. Ride safe

I finally made it there in 2010. Wasn't sure what to expect. I know how to ride but was leery about the people I thought I was about to be around. Long story short, I went back in 2011, 12, 13, 15 and 18. It was great. No trouble, no problems. Pricing was good for camps, food, cold beer and souvenirs. Like most of these guys say, mind your own business, don't bite off more than you can handle and remember most people there aren't there alone. I met some of the scariest bikers who were nothing but friendly. Great rally.

As I discovered for my first Sturgis in 2018, the greatest danger is getting run over by the RV's towing the motorcycles in trailers. I had hoped to roll into Sturgis on I-90, surrounded by thousands of bikes. What a letdown. Never go again.

Thanks for sharing. I went to for the 75th anniversary with a group of friends and camped at the Buffalo Chip for 7 days. The chip was amazing and we had a blast. The concerts and numerous bars on the property was convenient and no worries about the huge police presents in town. The only drag was riding through town to see the sights like you mentioned. The traffic was ridiculous. If your going to town to do any shopping do it early and avoid the massive crowds. There were plenty of bars at the Chip when the days riding was done. As far as the porno chick you mentioned..... just don't be a sucker. Seven days of partying and I didn't see one fight. If your thinking about going, do it but make plans way in advance and stay at a reputable camp ground or hotel. Good times

The only thing about the rally to be "afraid of" is the ridiculous amount of money you'll have to spend. I've ridden in the Black Hills region many times and it's a gorgeous place to ride. But upon inquiring about motel reservations in the area, I was quoted rates that were on average 4 times the amount these same motels were charging when the rally isn't going on. (And a 5 night minimum). I'd much rather avoid the crowds on the streets and bars and restaurants, pay a fair price for a place to stay and enjoy the riding. Plus I live very close to Daytona and do Bikeweek and Biketoberfest every year, which gives me more rally fun that I need.

Your correct. Money is a big draw. I've been 15 time and I enjoy myself thoughtly. I've done it for all 10 day at $400 and as much as $1600. You have to look around to find the deals. American Legion exit 46 in Piedmont last year full supper at $14. That's salad, bread, butter, meat, potatoes, drink, cake and ice cream. I rent a cabinet in Piedmont for $800 all 10 days. There are free Campgrounds in tge area if you camp. Drop me a line if you want more info.

I go for the vendors and some of the bikes. I live right down the road so I can enjoy the roads any time I want. If you love group rides, you are Set! If you abhor group rides, don't show up. The Hills fill up with roll roadblocks and it's just not fun doing 25mph in 35+mph zones. Just my personal choice. If I ride in a group, then it doesn't bother me one lick cause I expect to ride slower... riding solo, i love to go my own pace and since I'm not willing to pass on double yellow, I get stuck at the back.. over all, be good to folks up there and you'll have a blast.

CAMP 50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I stay at Wild Bills every time I go to the rally, and it might take some balls to hang at the fire with the boys, but they are good people, and there for a fun time. I love that place. The danger is on the road. Some yik yak who had too many beers, or not enough miles under his ass misses a turn on the inside lane, and high sides 8 or 10 bikes going the other way. If you have never been there, the endless stream of big bikes soon transforms into a full time cheese grater with no gaps. It looks like one LOOOOONG streaming chrome dragon, going by in a blur. If you touch it, it's gonna hurt. Here's a shout out to A.D. and the boys. Either you belong there, or you don't. If you don't.....leave. If you get your feelings hurt real easy......leave. If you go.....ya gotta do Spearfish Canyon. It's deluxe.

One more thing. Don't trailer your bike for godsakes. If you don't ride there and back, you didn't really do the rally. Ride it. I was kickin back with one of the brothers, leabnin against a tree, and a pickup with a motorcycle trailer pulled up into the bed drove by on the camp road. My pardner looked at me, with horror in his eyes, and said...."He's trailerin' his trailer?!?!" Just.....don't do that. It's all about the ride.

One more story. I had been in Deadwood for 3 or 4 days, and this beautiful, tiny woman rode in on an old blue and white ironhead electraglide, perfectly restored, with hand made saddle bags. Old style. . She was probably 5 feet tall, 125 pounds or so. The next night I was at the fire, and struck up a conversation with her. I asked "How long were you riding to get here? She said "I left home june first. It was the second week in august. This woman had been riding around America on a Harley for two months. I fell in love, and remain there to this day. A couple of years later, I met a guy there named "Fwanky". He talked wike Elmer Fudd. He told me all about the first wally he attended. Turns out it was the very first one. He was at ALL of them. I was checking out his bike later that night, and noticed that there was over 90 thousand miles on it. It was two years old. He was living in L.A. He told me...."I went to Fwawida wast month!" Amazing. If you got a Harley.....RIDE THAT THANG!!!!!! Go Fwanky! I love ya brother.

In 1991, I was at the rally and a solo warrior or independent. Rode into town and went to Gunners bar which at the time belonged to the 81. I sat at the bar and had a gin and tonic. All of a sudden the HAs started throwing others out the door for wanting to be wannabes. I knife and a gun was all I had but they had more than I had bullets. Anyway the finally made it to me. They sat down next to me, I offered to buy them a beverage, they asked how long had I been riding, my response was at that time 25 years, and was hoping for few more. He said what if I asked you to leave this bar, and I said May I finish my gin n tonic because I just got off a 750 mile ride and I was wanting a drink before find my campground . You ain’t a biker like us but you got 25 hard ones behind, enjoy your drink and then get the F out. And I did. Respect

The last 2 years, I rode in 'the day after' the rally ended. Not afraid of the type of people per se, just the abundance of people. It's nice to experience the mtns w/ the excellent weather w/ practically no one there. Just my .02.

I never have been to a Sturgis Rally but I have been tempted. I had a good career going until I was injured. Long story short I had an active CDL license for many years but never used it. I got going driving an 18 wheeler which can be enjoyable but is a lot of hell too. Not nearly as fun as my bike. However, want to know what it is like being a long haul trucker??? Pretty much everything you mentioned that you had to deal with at Sturgis is a very common thing to have happen driving an 18 wheeler. At truck stops, rest areas, sometimes while you're driving down the highway. And sometimes you have to park overnight and sleep in your sleeper in the worst areas in the cities and states. Most companies policies don't want truckers to pack heat, but screw them, I pack and actually legally in most states with my permit. Plus a few other options and I make sure if someone tries to break in, I will hear them!!!

I'm from Rapid City, about 35 miles south of Sturgis, and about the only thing you have to fear about the rally is having your wallet raked over the coals. The people are nice, the scenery is nice, but man do they love to hike the lodging prices up.

It's probably not close but about a dozen of us rode to Indy for the race many years ago. Lots of bikes, lots of drinking, and partying the night before the 500. Didn't see much of the race unless you count the bikers who closed down a street and drag raced all night. Harleys make a lot of noise but don't go very fast. I had a Yamaha XS 11 Special at the time and am sure it would have showed well.

Great stories. Went in 2017. Great riding. Trailered there but did over 1200 miles while we were there. Can't say this enough. The Black Hills, especially around Rushmore are challenging riding and not for beginners. It rained most days at some point and there are a ton of bikes and distractions. I've been riding for 20 years and you have to pay attention. The riding is awesome and diverse. We stayed at Katmandoo campground. It was expensive but very secure, clean, spacey, and well run. Just pricey. Don't go there if you want to experience the wild side. It aint like that there. Cops are like flies up there, even an hour away. My feelings were that Sturgis is super buttoned up. I feel like I missed it when it was real, like maybe 20 years ago. I don't know. I still had fun and will go back.
