- Hi! This is episode 1 of a series on how to do the Sturgis rally. In this episode ill cover where to stay, then in future episodes ill cover eating, drinking, concerts, etc. Let me know what you think or any ideas for future videos!

This video is spot on. During the 80's I rode my bowling ball 4 speed sportster from phoenix to sturgis, I was so sunburnt, wind burnt and methed out that I spent the entire 4 days in my tent😂🤣😂🤣
My husband and I rode to Sturgis in 90', 91', and 94' from Vancouver Canada pulling a trailer with the bike. It's about 1500 miles. First two trips were on our 1951 pan shovel Harley, my tailbone still remembers, third was on our FLHTCU Harley still pulling the trailer, I could sleep on that thing it was so comfortable... the best memories were made on those trips, the journey, the people we met along the way, and visiting the wonderful day destinations in Wyoming, & South Dakota. Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Crazyhorse, Wall, Badlands, ... great sights, beautiful country.
We stayed in Spearfish 17 miles away at a friend's house. The whole experience stays with you forever. I wish we could make the trip again, ... it calls you back. Only thing that has prevented us from returning has a been a major health issue which is sad. Loved it all.
Respect those around you, the organizers and the laws and you will go home with amazing memories and a head full of knowledge and history.
The weather was all over the place for sure. We used common sense. I remember a downpour that turned main street into a river. Water was rushing through the wheels all the way down. Short-lived storms in the summer.
We brought full gear for what ever came about. .... loved it all. Don't skimp on your gear and wear it, no riding with sandles and shorts, ... just because.

I had belonged to 2 different MC Clubs over the years and I’m over that stuff I now ride hog and it’s a lot more fun. Most of all I’m happy riding myself. I don’t drink when I ride. I have a 2015 street glide special Denim black I bought new I had back surgery so I had to stop riding for 2jrs. I just turned 30,000 on it. I’m 70yrs. Old and I still ride like I’m 30.

Keep on rollin Neil and Cliff, just bought a bike to ride with my Dad (68) while I still can.
I never got the club thing outside of The HA, Outlaws, PAGANS, Bandidos etc… the most well known ones. Then the next level down from there is US Veteran clubs/groups. All else that I’ve seen is a bullshit fad. It’s quite embarrassing to see these fad clubs run around and act a fool while they have no idea how they look to everyone who see’s them.
Hey brother, love youtube posts they are great. I have always had Harleys. This year I had a wipeout and fractured my spine. Follow your posts. My wife wanted to give me hope and encouraged me to buy a soft tail. My incentive to recover. Love your posts.
For me it was a bucket list thing. I'm retired so I was able to do a Coast to Coast to Coast trip to Sturgis. I hit the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic, and the Pacific. Then headed to Sturgis via the Tetons and Yellowstone. The high points of the trip were the Beartooth Pass, Million Dollar Hwy, Zion National Park, and Bryce Canyon Nation Park. Bottom line, it was a 11,500 mile trip in 49 days. If I go in 2021, It will be a trip straight to Sturgis and then back home.
Good god. Someday for sure. As long as I am still beholden to others I have to keep my trips to two weeks and still have to work a bit here and there.

My only trip to Sturgis was back in 09 - My first long trip, BMW R1200GS. I road from the Olympic Penninsula, WA. I got there a little late - like the end of September 😎
It was really a trip to a friend's wedding in NC, so I stopped in and had lunch. Pretty nice little town when it's empty. Turned into a 29 State tour. The most insane day was camping West side of Glacier NP - getting up and kicking the frost off the tent (mid 20's), dealing with the construction and 1 lane traffic/dirt - dropping down to St. Mary's Lake about 6 hours later and 104 degrees (still in my full gear and thermals)
I'd planned on adding a few but when I was in Williamsburg VA, (early Nov) the weather got bad, A noreaster and Hurricane Ida were due to arrive at the same time - I scratched the ride south to Key West and headed due west through Ashland (stayed 2 days) then over the Great Smokeys - Got to Gatlinburg TN - I saw the Best Western I'd used in Williamsburg - the parking lot was under about 5' of water. Headed through Nashville, down through Little Rock, across the Texas Panhandle, where the temps dropped to 26 degrees and stayed there through New Mexico & AZ. Was going to head to the coast and go up Hwy 1 but there were landslides - so Long Boring Trip up I5 to Redding - stayed with friends through Christmas - then North and home (dodging the flooding in southern WA)
Just started watching the videos man, I’m new into bikes but I’m super interested and getting ready to buy one next week. I was stoked to hear you’re in palm beach county and now I find out we share a birthday too. Love the videos, even just listening to them at work helps the days go by. Keep pumping them out man hope this UA-cam thing takes you far!
I rode mine to Sturgis in 2013. Rode from Rhode Island, to Sturgis and back!! Loved it

I've been 3 times, rode in every time. 1994 rode from San Diego, CA. '97 from Houston, Texas; and '99 from Flemingsburg, KY. If I ever get to go again, I will absolutely trailer my scoot !! Hahaha. I used to make fun of those people who didn't ride, but now I'm older and after riding 1000+ miles, once you get there, you don't want to ride, and that negates the point of going. Great videos, be safe out there

We have been using Frogg Togg gear for the rain. Originally used it for hunting and other outdoor activities where you had to have something light, breathable, and 100% waterproof. They now have a motorcycle specific gear which is absolutely fantastic due to the lightweight, durability, ease of compacting, and breathability which allows you to leave it on for a longer if it stops raining and heats up. Those Hunter heat chemical heat packs are also a great idea to bring along. That new heated and cooled Harley seat looks like a another interesting item. Love your presentation and your hairstyle.
I've heard Frog Togs are good. My wife loves those heat packs also!
Full Throttle/ Pappy Hoel is a very nice campground. Most of the sites are full hook-ups and larger than most other campgrounds. Really great place!! And let's not forget the largest biker bar in Sturgis. Love the channel! Keep it going
We stayed at the Chip in 2015. I remember that rain the night of Godsmack. It was our first time to SD. Hats off to ya for riding that night.

I watched this video a couple years back and had to go back to it as I’m now planning my Sturgis trip. Out of Northern MI. Will be toy hauling it out, because why not when you have something to use?
This was a great reminder. Obviously the prices may have changed in the two years since. But it’s still a great starting point.

I got forms that freeze the cubes in the shape of a skull!
Use red food die, just a little and it really enhances the features without affecting the flavor.
Be careful... Red Dye #5 causes cancer. In the UK they banned energy drinks (Gatorade)
Here is something we do that you didn’t mention...
We ride and we camp, mostly at Glenco. Our first trip to Sturgis was in 1987. For us it is about 900 mile one way. We (wife and I) would ride our 1981 FLH Shovel. Load all our riding gear, clothes for nine days and all our camping gear on the FLH. What a PITA that was. Did that for the Sturgis rally’s in 87’, 88’ and 89’. Wife started riding her own Harley in 1990. That helped! We could split all the gear between two bikes. Still a PITA!
In the mid 90’s we started shipping our camping gear and the majority of our clothes to Glenco camp ground via UPS. Glenco handles everything including shipping our stuff back at the end of the rally. Shipping our stuff makes the trip much more enjoyable!
We have also ridden to bike week in Daytona in 2004 and 2011. Just over 1900 miles one way!! Did the biker bar tour and got the t-shirt, but that’s another story.

We really liked Daytona. Daytona is different from Sturgis. IMHO, Sturgis is more of a riding rally.
We are thinking of another trip to Daytona within the next couple of years.

The Sturgis Family and I stay at Glencoe every year. People from all over the country meet there and it's like a family reunion. I look forward to it every year.
My son and I stay at the Travelodge in Deadwood. The hotel has a huge area in the back where you can stow your trailer and tow vehicle if you’re trailering. They also have a multi-level covered parking garage to keep your bike out of the rain. We like Deadwood a lot. It has a life of its own with good restaurants, bars, and casinos. There’s also a shuttle that goes round trip to and fro Sturgis for those nights you want to indulge in adult beverages (like every night), and not worry about navigating the canyon road late at night.
Good tip. Deadwood is one of my favorite spots during the rally. Gamble a bit, good food, etc.

Good coverage. Stay at the Chip or Glencoe, never leave. There's lots of Tent camping in and around Sturgis. I've stayed in Custer, great rides but after two years of riding 60 miles home in the dark woods in the rain and the four legged critters, no more of that for me.
2019 I stayed at Hog Heaven $150 for 10 nights, nice place they have RV sites, clean showers couple places to eat bands etc. 2020 stayed in hotel in Keystone $250 a night.
Rab has rain gear that's made for hikers,lite weight or insulated, thay also make some of the best bivy sacks

1998 i rode a 1996 XL1200C From Portsmouth NH to Sturgis and Back, and in 2003 i rode an FXDC from Charleston SC to Sturgis........But i have the Advantage that i lived my High School years in Rapid City so i have a pretty good idea of how to get around and where to go.
That's a long trip on a sporty!
i Now Live near Laconia and go to that every year now. Sturgis has turned too Yuppie for me now, when i was a kid in the 70's on my SX250 it was FUN. I'm Also a Fan of Myrtle Beach
Some year I'm gonna do Laconia. There are a lot of million dollar motor coaches at Sturgis for sure, and the custom baggers outside rarely move, but eh, you never know when you might end up liking someone despite their success.
Me, and my wife went late to the Kid Rock concert I think in 2021, and got pulled over for a missing tail light. Bear Butte saved us because it was 1 1/2 miles away, and I'm NDN.
Yes they have it's called Cedar Lodge. I believe it's around 50 to 60 dollars a night for a room with 2 twin beds, it's a great deal. I had reservations a couple of years ago but had to cancel due to my friend wreaking his bike and we canceled our trip. Only one person needs a military ID and the second person can get a pass.

I rode the 1,400 miles from Indio, CA in 2019 and stayed in hotels along the way. Stayed at a hotel in Rapid City for the weekend and rode the 1,400 miles back the next week. Great adventure. Wrecked out early on the trip in 2020. We're gonna try again for 2021. Hope to see you there...

Last year I stayed in Custer at the Holiday Inn Express $235 a night by myself for 6 nights and I’m not doing that again. Ether I’m going in with a group or my old ass is camping this year. I’ve trailered and rode to Sturgis, it’s 1500 miles for me from north Alabama and it depends on weather & feeling on which way I’ll travel out there. The older I get the more I want trailer my bikes. I tell everyone to just get to Sturgis because one can ride their butts off in the Black Hills to see as much as they can.
EXACTLY. I ride 2,000 miles while I am up there, I don't need another 5,000 (boring) miles just to get there and back.
What about maybe bunk a biker. Never used it yet. If you can do a video on bunk a biker. Never seen one on here. Love the channel and the content. Was hoping to run into you at bike week in Daytona 2022. Keep it up

I have tent camped at Wyatt’s outside of Belle Fouche. It’s 15-20 minutes to Sturgis. Very quiet. We paid $40 a day for 2 people.

The Chip for concerts, Glencoe for unclothed people. You can always stay at one but get the wristband for the other, that way you can bounce back and forth!

If choosing between Glencoe and The Chip for camping in a 40’ toyhauler (fifth wheel), which place is better? I’m a huge fan of full hookups too, but could do without if the chip is a better venue otherwise (music, night life, etc)
Are there any shuttles that run from the campgrounds to Sturgis? What about if somewhere like Rapid City to Sturgis shuttles?
Are ride shares available during the rally? if so, they are probably astronomically priced.
Staying close to Sturgis is cost prohibitive, so looking for outside options.

I don't know about all the way to Rapid since that's about 35ish miles, but there are a lot of options to get you from the campgrounds into town. Jonez Bus, Da Bus, etc. You can buy armbands and ride as much as you want. I prefer Jones myself, but either are great.

The hotel rates even in Billings Mt. go thru the roof during the rally. 290 mi. One way.. via Bella.
Just about everyone who lives in sturgis is willing to rent space in their yard for tent camping so it's not that hard to find a place if you come without a pre-plan. It is all dependent on what level of comfort you wish to have while at sturgis. I have been to the rally 10 times since 1990 and haven't had any trouble finding a spot to throw up the tent. Used to pay $10 a night in the 90s but it's about $30 a night now. We stay about a block from the iron horse saloon, it has showers and toilets and great people. Great advice for first timers. Sturgis can be overwhelming if you are new to it.
You’re right, I completely forgot to mention camping in peoples yards. I’ve even heard that sims of those that host people make breakfast and everything.

@@redneckwithajeep5001 if there are tents in the yard ask if they have room for another. I don't think it is too hard to find someone to rent a spot from. There is also a car wash on lazelle that they convert to showers during bike week so you can use that if the place you stay doesn't have shower. I've used baby wipes to clean myself up with as well if no showers are available
@@maddog3080 I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I was making some camping trips last year in preparation for some long distance rallies I’m only 900 miles away but that’s something similar to what I do down in Arkansas. I have some friends that let me camp out in their backyard during Bikes Blues and BBQ I was half figuring for Sturges I was going to be stealth camping somewhere but if that’s an option that’s a lot better. Especially when you factor in my bikes are straight piped so there’s really not much stealth to stealth camping for me lol
Good info, thanks for doing this. I've been staying at a place by Rapid City for the last three years but looking for something a bit closer. Any info you can get out to a first timer is going to help them out a lot, the trip can be confusing and more than expected at first, Well I have to go shovel some Ohio snow before it gets to dark, enjoy Florida

This is are 11th year in a row the wife and I , we also trailer from eastern Iowa and use are toyhauler so I have my own shower, shiter and bed that’s the biggest reason why plus there’s no stopping during bad weather there or home ! Hammer down , nice info!!

You can.plan on rain everyday at about 3-5 pm daily. Look out for tge hail. It hurts. I'm not a helmet guy but it sure helps!
I caught a 2 incher in the nose two years ago. I saw stars. Freaking hail.
We stay just west of Sturgis at Elkhorn Ridge RV park.
My friend and I will be riding from Port Charlotte FL. What a long and strange trip it will be 😂

Wife and I had Covid for Christmas; was tough on us. Then she got sick with something scary that almost killed her. Recovery was tough. Very few miles put on the Harley. Think we are still weaker than we were pre-Covid. Our Christmas gift was getting to live. Problems don’t seem so big now. God is good.

Probably try Glencoe if I do. I hate messing with shit or pump trucks. My TH doesn’t have very big tanks and with four people I’d be shit pumping everyday (with showers).
The sewer hookup thing is a real pain. Glencoe's full hookups will bring me back for sure...
I have been working on researching on everything to do with Sturgis and it is $1000 from Central Fl to Rapid City to ship my bike. I am staying in Hill City, booked it last year during Sturgis Bike Week, at the moment flights are about $370RT.
That sounds right. I know it was like $900 from Broward County a few years ago. I’m sure the price has gone up. The weird thing is it sounds like the price is close to the same no matter where you’re shipping from.

Came across your channel. Love the content. Rode from VA Beach in 2018 for my first time and camped in Belle Forche. Planning on riding out again this year. What do you know about Camp 5 between Sturgis and Deadwood? It’s disbursed camping. I am thinking about trying it.
I actually know nothing about it, sorry! Looks like it's run by the forest service. I bet it's beautiful, but I am curious about access? It says it's 4x4 trails, etc. Would it be easy to get in and out of your site? If you stay there I want to see pics! Oh, and don't forget to hit subscribe (I guess I am supposed to say that...)

If your tenting, best place i found is Elk Creek Camping and Resort. Its been $15.43 a night. They have pool, game room, store, food, showers and laundry. It off exit 46. Give me a shout if you want more info. Another I've heard but not stayed is Kickstand. Its exit 37 I know they have their own music!
I stayed here. Great place. Little far away from the main attractions but nice. Spearfish Creek Cabins.

Spearfish night life has died off a lot in the last five years . the po po have chased a lot of people away . sad because it used to be rocking at the 3D Bar

@@ProfessionalMonkey I'm Not Sure Mine Lasted Forever, it had reflective stripes that always reflected even 10 years later and except for me skinning the knee on it in the Rain applying a rear brake over a Painted Traffic Line and swinging my ass in front of me not so gracefully at 7mph was not my brightest moment
According to the Haul Bikes website they charge $1,700 from any state in the US, request a quote. Another idea as to where to spend the night is the dorms at the university in Rapid city, a few years ago it was $90/night.
That sounds high. They quoted me $900 a few years back.

You need to make a video about shipping a bike to the rally’s. I’ve been doing it with Haul Bikes. 3 years now started at $750 RT. Last year $1050 RT now This year $1700 round trip from Dallas. It’s become insane !!! There like the Mafia!

I’ve never trailered my bike anywhere, but I’m considering it for Sturgis, it’s 1800 miles from my house. My question is once you get to your hotel and unload your bike, what to do with my truck and trailer?
Welcome aboard! Most hotels will let you stash your truck and trailer at the end of their lot. We've never had a problem when we used to stay at hotels.
Ride the bike. I do from Alaska.
if you happen to be staying at the buffalo chip- be sure to look for the food network award-winning Bonafide Foodtruck up near the wild Gypsy tour camp.. Fresh healthy foods, bombass burritos, salads, donuts, and lots more fun things!!!

I can say with pride I never have had the trailer my bike to Sturgis! 600 miles on a 1200 Sportster, and over a thousand miles on a Dyna Street Bob!
Good for you, it's 2,500 miles each way for me, and I own an RV... Sometimes it's not about "had to" it's about wanting to get there fresh and then ride like hell the whole time you're up there and enjoy my RV in the campground. A 500 mile day isn't rare for us so it's not about ability...
@@ProfessionalMonkey don't take it as an insult I'm just saying it can be done especially if you're younger, as we get older a camper sure is inviting for a good night's rest and a fresh shower!
For my next trip in 2022 I'll have a toy hauler, I'll be 50 and I don't feel like sleeping on the ground anymore!

How much should i realistically need to save in order to have a good time at the rally, with shipping my bike and renting an RV stall?
Well, bike shipping is pricey these days. I am hearing $1,700 round trip!. If you rent an RV (sitting there hooked up for you), it's $2,500. If you ahve your own RV it's about $600 ish for the spot. campground pass is another $300 ish dollars, and I bring $2,500 for incidentals. I think it's about $7k all in for my trip. That's fuel pulling my rig up, spending money, campground passes, RV spot (a big one that's $800), all in. It can be done for A LOT less, but that's how I like to do it.

Great videos on Sturgis. I commented on one of your other videos about cost. I'm one of the badass guys who rides to Sturgis 😄😄. I'm 600 mile away and go with a group of 8. Me and one other guy ride and the others trailer there bikes but the bring our food , water , alcohol and tents. So we eat breakfast at schools,fire halls or churches. Lunch some where and grill burgers or brats at camp for supper. If I don't buy something special for the bike my cost is between $1200 to $1500 for a week. It can be done cheap but I do sleep in a tent for a week which is well worth it. Great times I have had in Sturgis
That's a good plan. I'm 5,000 miles round trip. I like my RV!!!
I'm getting older so I think will be renting small cabin at the camp grounds.

Haul Bikes hauled my bike from Montana to chas SC and it was flawless. I’d let them haul my bike anywhere.

My birth is also during the rally.
Glenco was great for tent camping because it has tons of shaded areas. But the concerts were weak. The Chip is hands down best for concerts but tent camping sucks. Lack of shade areas.
I was wondering what type of phone works best in the area.
They all work pretty well till you get up in the mountains. Nothing works up there all that well...
4:30AQM on way to work on rural florida Roads doing 85+ in straights and 55-65 in corners laying it down as Bike was just hitting its Prime and as bearing left in a turn at Speed deer hits Crash bar and Tank, taking off both turn signals and most of tag bracket and I still kept it up, Slowed to stop, did walk around, Thanked the Lord and eased into work and then told them taking the day off. When we walked out and seen the bike in daylight Surprised I am alive, deer went at least 90lbs or better. On the Right an embankment, Trees and fence posts with barbed wire fencing as a cool damp morning where grass was slick. It can happen to anyone, I didnt brake or over react, I simply Throttled Down Slowly trying to keep on road I was inches from leaving. Deer whistles dont really work or ones on my bike should have warned deer because I had Vance and Hines a Stage III kit and I was Hauling Ass.

Do places like the Chip have organized rides? Is there one camp that's better than others for showing up alone as a first timer, camping and finding people to ride with? Thanks
The Chip has a few rides. The Legends ride for example. I think you're likely to find people to ride with at the Chip. That would be where I stay if I were a first timer. Depends on if you like tent camping or want to pay to rent an rv or cabin also (both are on their site).

Went up by myself one year, camped at the elk something campground, meet some cool folks and rode all over the place. If you can chat and like to ride, you'll have no shortage of things to do.
Forgot it's beautiful for me riding at night. That 50-60 is short sleeves for me. I'm from Alaska. Anything over 55 is sweating weather. I die at Sturgis because of tge heat. As for rain gear. I've had 3 set of harley rsingesr they all suck in my opinion. A one piece keeps you dry. Just my opinion. Be sure your lights are good ,it's really dark and lots of wildlife on all roads and highways at night.
Good advice for any newbies. If anyone is thinking about going LED it would be useful up there.

Its a great area to go to period. Rushmore, Needles highway, the badlands, etc. I would go during the rally just because there are so many bikes on the road it would be a pain to get around in a car. I would go 2 weeks after the rally.

I ask my buddies about a H D the best 1 for me and I was looking at a Heritage they were telling me..... I’m black and brothers don’t ride Heritage’s well I’m only 171lbs. Right now I can a new / used one. If it’s comfortable for long distance that’s I’m concerned with if not then I’ll look at a RK.
I have never noticed that brother's don't ride heritages? I would say that a RK is a better long term choice. You are gonna ride it more cause it rides smoother, etc. The frame, wheelbase, etc. just make it a better bike to live with. You can't go wrong with either, but for maybe 10% more that RK is worth ALL the money.

Ha!!!! Yes!!!! A gift from my wife a few years ago. It has really been reliable and it still freezes things by accident from time to time. It keeps my club soda cold for my scotch... I need a little freezer now for good ice, etc.

We stay at full throttle and love it great entertainment, we're paying about $675 for the pull through spot and about $250 per person for your access for 7 days
