After watching about 50 tiny desk concerts the last few days. Not only are these the most eclectic and best concerts that have introduced me to some great musicians, they also have the best comments in the comment section
This band is EXACTLY what musicians dream, and work, and sweat to play in. Tight, loose, swinging, and right in the pocket, all at once. They are in a magical place and I truly hope they run for a long time and enjoy every second of it!
Since it isn't listed in the video, the names of the performers are: Nathaniel Rateliff - Guitar/Vocals Wesley Watkins - Trumpet Adam Shaffner - Tenor Sax Andy Wild - Bari Sax Luke Mossman - Guitar Joseph Pope III - Bass Patrick Meese - Drums Mark Shusterman - Piano
Usually I get tired of people saying this kind of thing, but I totally agree. Seems like the current trend in rock music is revving up the old trendy engine and putting out a bunch of generic bands
Been listening to tiny desk concerts all weekend and crying. My husband, who passed away 6 months ago, would have loved them. Why oh why did I not discover them before he died....
My 17 month old son is in love with this . If he's having a tantrum I cue this up and he's on cloud nine . He loves to sing Mellow out . He's constantly walking around singing Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo
My 1yr old grand daughter is not feeling well and has a fever. I came to this channel for a few minutes and she is now asleep, and put down with a lower temp! TYSM for sharing your love of music with us.
I spend an exceptional amount of time watching, listening to, and otherwise absorbing music, and I tell you this is at the pinnacle. Top .01% Some of the greatest music the world has seen.
I'm turning 50 soon, and I first heard Nethaniel and his band about 5 years ago. I still can't get enough. I've played this video hundreds of times. He is truly a gift from God and will forever be in my top 5. Just love his music so much! Thank you, Nethaniel! Long may you live and bless this world with your gift!
Chris Wright being a shit guitar player, nailing something even so simple is such a tremendous feeling. I'm not saying he's shit, I was referring to myself.
If y’all haven’t seen them in person/live you NEED to. Last summer I saw them at a small little concert (only like 200 people at most) and it was amazing. The energy in the room and singing and jamming out. 10/10 recommend
I saw them live as an opener and one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. They did an outstanding job at the tiny desk but he comes alive when he can work a full stage. These guys are a must see
saw them a couple months ago, me and everyone i went with said it was the best show theyve seen, the whole band kills it, then he put all the lights down low and did and its still alright by himself
I can’t believe it took me this long to learn about this unbelievably talented band. But now that I have, I can’t get enough of Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats. Talented individual musicians, great musicianship, amazing voice, and a unique yet timeless sound.
I’ve watched this a dozen times or more... the trumpet player still makes me smile. Bringing all the energy and joy to his playing. This is my favorite Tiny Desk Concert and that says a lot as I’ve watched a ton of them and everyone brings their “A” game to NPR Tiny Desk.
Hahaha. Your comment echoes my feelings about that horn player too. Inwas watching him most of the time. This music is so good and he is so captivating to watch.
This is great it was part of my wife's wedding, she left me who knows but I wasnt going to let her steal this music along with my crushed heart I also play this nearly every day for the last four yrs.
So... I'm listening to this pretty much every day. Can't get enough of it. The music is amazing and they have such fun together, that chemistry is what makes this so awesome.
So glad to see Nathaniel Rateliff on Tiny Desk! Great performance. Such a great, hard working, humble guy. We had a blast filming his singer-songwriter style show in Boston a year ago. Glad to see him take off with the Night Sweats
You know fate is at hand when these gentlemen just so happen to meet each other, start at band and create consistent magic. So many pieces at play that blend perfectly.
I'm a camera-person usually, but wow... the audio for this performance was incredible! Almost a better sound than the album. These guys sound so good acoustic, as well.
Why could someone down vote this? Good, honest, original music and if you take the time to watch the video clips it's even better. Anyway, thank you guys for the music, you sound just great. Thumbs up!
Chris Stapleton an Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are both equal in talent and definitely my favorite musicians today. Both groups have more meaning behind what they believe and perform with more passion. I hope they come to my city one of these days.
At first, I was disappointed because they didn't play S.O.B. but after listening to this a couple times I respect it. S.O.B. is the song they're known for but they were just like nah our other tracks are fire too.
In an interview, last year Nathanial said they almost quit when everyone just had to love the one song he hated the most on that record. SOB is his least favorite song and if it didn't lead to people listening to other songs, they were all going to give up music.
Yeah, SOB made me turn away from their music. I thought it was a super young guy emulating the past, but hearing "Worry Me" floored me, sold me, made me a fan for life. Such talent and soul!
SOB is fun enough, but it’s really not one of their best songs musically, but it got most of us to listen to the rest. Nate used to work in a plastics factory. Can you imagine wasting this talent.
And here the first song I got was (you worry me) and ( hey mama) I heard them on a ncis new orleans episode. He must really be good if he sang on that show. My only problem is i cant find a bass cover of the song worry me :/
I love the bari sax. It gives them such a full, round sound, and you never see a bari in a band this size. I'm also super-impressed that the sax players are so restrained; that's harder to maintain than you might expect. Ditto for the trumpet player.
I have watched/listened to a lot of these Tiny Desk's over the past years, and It's up for personal opinion, but this is the best one. When you come on the show this is the bar.
Nah, it wasn't the lick itself, it was the tonation/voicing coming together in a buttery smooth pitch. To have acoustics ride the notes like that, it's a delight. ..all musicians find smiles within those moments. ;) So, nailed it; perhaps, but nailed it without having to do extra work to get the pitch parallel. .. it's like "swishing" a 3 pointer.. it counts as long as it goes in, but when it "swishes", it makes you say 'hell yeah'. ;)
I saw these guys at the Deaf Institute Manchester about 5 years ago, a tiny tiny venue. They were brilliant and Nathaniel's patter between songs really drew the audience in. A super showman with a tight tight band. Go see!!
I've listened to a lot of these Tiny Desk Concerts and I really appreciate that they will host ANYONE, so you can hear all sorts of talented new musicians you might have never heard otherwise. But this show is top of the heap for me. These guys are fantastic. Time to go wander all over You Tube to find other live shows, then buy a few CD's for the old collection.
I generally can't tell how good a musician is (unless they make obvious mistakes), but I can tell a few people in this band *really* enjoy what they do. The piano man, the trumpet player, the guy with the shiny Gibson... And the lead vocalist, for sure.
If anything, they were struggling to keep from blasting out the room with 8 powerful musicians. They are a rowdier bar type band and they made it feel like a living room jam session. Fantastic set!
I saw them live recently, and they had the most beautiful display of their talented horns/brass. Those instruments were perfectly harmonizing and were singing like angels. Such a talented band
What a talented group. Such an original and fresh take while paying homage to the classics that so obviously inspired you. Amazing. Looking forward to the years to come.
Nathaniel, your vocals are on a “Biblical Proportion” like no other since the Beetles! I’m 60 yrs old and you’re coming to Indy in June 2018! I live 45 miles to the West and we can have a Blast in my house and back yard!!! My wife of 35 years (2 kids) recently passed on Christmas Day 2017, but when I listen to your prophecy I have the will to go on, Nathaniel yes I have “Night Sweats” too, don’t we all!!!?
i wish they record a while album this way, the music is so real being played like this, could listen to all their music done this way, amazing sound and love how well they play together
I love watching these concerts as I get ready in the morning and was so happy to find my favorite band in the queue! I love their albums but have really seen them perform before and they so supportive of each other throughout their sets - giving each other thumbs up or smiling at each other when performing. It was kind of cute lol
that album is one of those rare ones where it's just about perfect because every song is good, there is NOT ONE SONG that doesn't get you swayin' or layin' back...
love love love you guys! play you every chance I get.. Tammie at CHSR 97.9 in Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada You were in my top 10 albums of the year.
I love how into their music everybody in the band is. They all are just jammin and dancing and having a blast. You can definitely hear that they have their hearts in the music, and it is wonderful.
They all look truly content together and believe in an attitude of solidarity, and dedication to the cause of making great music, which allows EACH SONG to "come alive!" Which is a testament to their artistry.

Rap is cringe
Why pollute comments sections with this garbage
BOO
If i know 1 thing. It's that Mr. Rateliff is rappin' to the drums of his Gitar.. we're All Akin.
I don't always listen to Nathaniel but when I do, so do my neighbors!
😄
hah
Eight guys. No one plays over the other. Musicians at their very soul.
I saw them in New Orleans about 4 years ago; they are even better live!
Don't do maths but this comment resonates
Yes brother
@Carl think he was meaning showboating
@Carl please learn what "playing over" someone means.
After watching about 50 tiny desk concerts the last few days. Not only are these the most eclectic and best concerts that have introduced me to some great musicians, they also have the best comments in the comment section
hello Jesse I'm with you.
Any standout favorites?
Look up Saint Paul & the Broken Bones
@@Qwazier3 just flipped over to it. Can confirm, was amazeballs. Thanks!
I hope, a year later since this comment you have been hooked since.
This band is EXACTLY what musicians dream, and work, and sweat to play in.
Tight, loose, swinging, and right in the pocket, all at once.
They are in a magical place and I truly hope they run for a long time and enjoy every second of it!
Gotta appreciate a trumpet player playing as soft as he possibly can and still looking like he's having a good time :)
+Jim Nyenhuis Yeah, that looked frustrating.
Speaks to his skill
Jim Nyenhuis un
And Vouches For His Soul .. Indeed
Trumpet player here....one of the first things I noticed as well.
Since it isn't listed in the video, the names of the performers are:
Nathaniel Rateliff - Guitar/Vocals
Wesley Watkins - Trumpet
Adam Shaffner - Tenor Sax
Andy Wild - Bari Sax
Luke Mossman - Guitar
Joseph Pope III - Bass
Patrick Meese - Drums
Mark Shusterman - Piano
Awesome...every one of them😍
I may be wrong on this but it looks like Andy is on tenor sax and Adam is on bari
No it’s Nathaniel Rateliffe and the Nightsweats
Pretty sure that is House MD on the bass...
When a band can sound this good outside the recording studio, you know they are a good band and not just another commercial gimmick.
Having seen them live twice, I can vouch for this being true.
Ray Dorey yes! you are so right. if you dont mind me asking how old are you my friend?
Usually I get tired of people saying this kind of thing, but I totally agree. Seems like the current trend in rock music is revving up the old trendy engine and putting out a bunch of generic bands
They don't sound good. THEY FEEL SO GOOD, seeps into your bones good!
Especially when they are so visibly only half awake. It's a more pared down sound than usual from them - and great for that.
I feel really sad for the 392 people who thumbs-downed this fantastic TDC. To go through life unable to recognize good music is a small tragedy.
Love this. How could anyone down this?
must not be their taste, but this feels like real music and a rarity these days with all the hollywood plants making bland music. this is immaculate
Today is the day I discovered yet again a great band through NPR. Thanks!
+Aage Leonard You should check out Nathaniel Rateliff's solo stuff too. Great music!
+Aage Leonard SO much good music out there that only seems to make it on to NPR and certain late night shows.
+Aage Leonard I recommend watching the documentary "Austin to Boston", he's in it, as well as other great musicians. It's also very uplifting :)
Pablo Venzke Avila I love that documentary so much.
+Pablo Venzke Avila Do you know where to find it? I thought you could only see it in select theaters on a tour.
In my humble opinion... One of the tiny desk's top 5. Bravo Nathaniel & Co!
These Tiny Desk performances are 1000 times better than CD/Vinyl versions.......... Stunning.
Been listening to tiny desk concerts all weekend and crying. My husband, who passed away 6 months ago, would have loved them. Why oh why did I not discover them before he died....
Sorry about your loss, life can be a b*tch sometimes, keep your head up!
This is so sad! Hugs! This is definitely the kind of music I hope they are playing at the after party, so you never know! ❤️
Trumpet player makes me so happy!
agreed
+James Colpitts You notice his mute doubles as a cup? LOL! That's bad ass
i wanna be like him when i grow up lol
He just embodies pure joy and it's contagious (:

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Casual Denim
Well that escalated quickly.
man i love youtube stories like this, man has a thought, other man hates said thought
Sober, still wears brewery tour hat....
Denim is timeless and manly and bitches love it
Beautiful south
My 17 month old son is in love with this . If he's having a tantrum I cue this up and he's on cloud nine . He loves to sing Mellow out . He's constantly walking around singing Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo
Amazing!! Our 3 year old would only listen to Celtic Woman for 2 years, not bad but I would have taken this band!
My 1yr old grand daughter is not feeling well and has a fever. I came to this channel for a few minutes and she is now asleep, and put down with a lower temp! TYSM for sharing your love of music with us.
This is 8 years old and I’m just seeing it. It’s so flipping good.
Time for a rewatch pal

I spend my free time watching tiny desk concerts.
You can sing along, play along or even dance to it, too :)
Yeah, I spend my "should be doing something productive" time doing the same thing.
My goal is to comment on all of them eventually. Or at least a large chunk. Love them. Very special.
Welcome to the cult!
I run them in the background while I work
I love how refined and mature their sound is; it's very unselfish playing.
😀
It needs to be said. The guys setting up the sound are geniuses
Yes! Absolute legends!
This music makes me thoroughly, completely, unabashedly happy.
Couldn't have said it better.....one of my favorite bands.
As long as you don't pay attention to the lyrics!
The lyrics are part of why I fell so completely for this band - they’re not always feel-good, but almost always brilliant nonetheless.
That right there is some sweet medicine. Trumpet player....one smooth cat.
I'm turning 50 soon, and I first heard Nethaniel and his band about 5 years ago. I still can't get enough. I've played this video hundreds of times. I've listened to this over 3 dozen times. I've memorized every word said.
Not the lyrics, the words between songs.
Especially the awkward laughter.
I' just floored at how they adjusted their sound to fit that tiny room, especially the horns. Great work!
I love the spirit of this band. Every member always seems so in love with the music. Their faces are so passionate but kindly.
That look the guitar player gives Nathaniel at 04:48 when he nails the riff :)
Chris Wright being a shit guitar player, nailing something even so simple is such a tremendous feeling. I'm not saying he's shit, I was referring to myself.
Good spotting. Magic moment from both Luke Mossman & Nat Rat.
Thanks for pointing that out mate it just shows the joy playing with such a tight original band. Love it
That is fear and respect personified.
yes, that and a "Wow, we are really tight" kinda look. Band was really perfect here and the sound in this place is amazing.

+Christopher Volpini. Indeed, their acoustics are remarkable, my respect for Gibson raised when I hear what they did to the mandolin .
