Over the decades, I've listened to all these experts instruct us about the best diet using fancy words only to later do a total turnaround. Low carb, high carb, LDL cholesterol vs HDL cholesterol, fruit good, fruit bad, veggies yea, veggies nay, red meat no, red meat yes. This leads me to believe that when it comes to the body, there is no health expert out there that knows for certain what is best. So I'd say perform the most thorough due diligence you can, use your intuition, and let your own body be your guide. LOL!

There’s some things that every expert agreed on.
      1.Processed sugar is bad
      2. processed oils are bad 3.processed meats are bad. 4.Water is good.
      5. Gluten won’t kill you but its best to not eat, or eat very little. 6.Dairy isn’t good if you’re watching your weight.
99% of all experts will agree on those basic principles.
In my opinion, if you eliminate the first 3 things from your body and drink at least 1 ounce of water per 2 pounds of body weight, you can eat just about whatever you want within those guidelines and be generally healthy. Prove me wrong

And everyone is looking for the magic fix, one super special dietary regimen that will cure all ills.
Of course, no such thing exists.
Specific elimination diets like carnivore, or even raw vegan, can help people with serious auto immune problems, but fall short for most people after a couple of years, or less.
Active people in general good health should eat whole foods with some occasional intermittent fasting, as well as a few targeted supplements like vitamin D/K, and that will work extremely well for most people most of them time.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🥑 Paul went from thinking carbohydrates were bad to realizing carbohydrates and insulin spikes are healthy and necessary.
06:16 💊 Protein spikes insulin, but not to the same degree as carbohydrates. Carbs provide stronger insulin signaling for mineral absorption.
11:49 🍵 Paul no longer believes fasting is as beneficial as once thought. Fasting may induce negative cardiac remodeling.
17:11 🌱 Paul now thinks grounding is important. There are physiological differences between grounded and ungrounded states.
23:31 😎 Paul has stopped wearing sunglasses. Natural light is important for circadian rhythms and ocular health.

      Summary:
1] Paul sold a book and a bunch of other ideas but the income from this has been slowly sinking, but not so much that he's taken down his Carnivore website and still selling his Carnivore books [yes I checked and Thomas is promoting it in the video description as well. In fact, he's now playing both sides of the fence by being the only Carnivore MD who proclaims himself to be vegan or vegetarian [sorry, I don't remember because I was contemplating the open-faced hypocrisy and double dipping].
2] Completely ignoring the fact that he's ripped and gotten to where he's at with Carnivore and his biomechanics are probably the top of 1 in 10K. Yeah, he and Thomas can afford to change it up where most people, and those with carb addictions would self-sabotage following this new nonsense.

I remember Dr. Berg talking about his neighbors who didn't live a healthy lifestyle but they were very active and outdoors a lot. That seemed to mitigate a lot of the negative things they were doing. There is quite an interesting correlation between sunlight and mitochondria health. The UV light is able to pennate to the organs and increases production of melatonin. Plus if you’re on low carb/keto diet, your body is not going to be fully carnivore adapted and it’s always going to need carbs. Let your body adapt to meat and high fat only and you won’t have problems.

We have good evidence even transient glucose spikes cause beta-amyloid plaque to form, we know it damages cells, blood especially, and blood vessel linings (we can measure these, edit: and yeah, we also know that cancer cells feed primarily on glucose). Whether that damage matters if you are healthy enough otherwise, isn't clear.

For someone overweight and insulin resistant, adding honey to their diet would not necessarily have the same effect. “Pounds of fruit” 😱 (the majority of that weight is water….which is probably why food should be measured in energy not by weight). 200 grams of carbohydrates is a number he has frequently mentioned. 100-150g of that is used by his brain each day. This leaves a whopping 50-100g (or 200-400 calories) to be burned through activity. Anyone that isn’t moving enough to burn 200-400 calories through voluntary movement is ridiculously sedentary and not keeping movement habits that are appropriate for human health.

I had to trust the mainstream science that high LDL and APO-B have at least a direct relationship to plaque buildup and heart disease. Tried to handwave with all these influencers saying otherwise. The cardiologist I visited was aware and kindly told me that LDL of 175 is bad, no matter what my good HDL, low triglycerides or particle counts say.

At first I felt great but then after about 5 weeks I began waking with muscle jerks throughout my whole body and almost like im losing breath for a minute which jolts me awake. Like a fight or flight sensation and during the day feeling slight heart palpitations. I started taking LMNT and extra salt. but with mild improvement. As resistant as I was to eating carbs, I did introduce some berries and honey in the morning. What a difference. I am not someone who needs to lose weight and my metabolism runs hot as it is. So I do believe it is individual as to who needs a bit of carbs and who does not. I am ok with being less dogmatic about being a strict "carnivore" just to say I am. Like why in the world would i continue to suffer these feelings in my body so i can "tough it out" to say im pure carnivore? I am listening to my body and what it needs.

A New View on Carbs and Insulin
As Dr. Saladino learned more about human physiology, he realized that is view of carbohydrates and insulin had been misguided. Rather than something to be feared, the insulin spikes that happen after eating carbs are actually a normal and healthy response in the body.
Here were some of the key insights that changed his perspective:
-Insulin spikes signal your kidneys to hold onto important minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This prevents the electrolyte depletion I was experiencing. -Insulin sensitizes your cells to these minerals for proper uptake. My muscles were cramping partly due to inability to take in electrolytes. -Insulin enhances the production of glutathione, a crucial antioxidant. Low glutathione levels are linked to oxidative stress. -Insulin helps regulate sex hormones, preserving testosterone and reducing binding globulins. My declining testosterone signaled dysfunctional insulin dynamics. -Insulin promotes glycogen synthesis and muscle growth when combined with exercise. My performance and strength suffered without this signal.
Dr. Saladino realized that, for metabolically healthy people,Temporary increases in insulin after eating carbs are not inherently harmful. Our bodies are designed to handle glucose spikes, which enable vital processes.
The key is that insulin returns to baseline within a normal timeframe. Constant, chronically elevated insulin is problematic, not brief post-meal spikes. Demonizing all insulin led me to avoid something humans likely evolved to regularly consume.
This more nuanced understanding completely shifted his attitude around carbohydrates. Dr. Saladino no longer feared insulin release or spikes. In fact, he now see them as beneficial signals his body needed.

I think one of the things that's been confusing a lot of people the last decade or so is that a healing diet and a healthy longterm diet are going to be different. For a LOT of people, going full carnivore for 3-18 months to heal makes a lot of sense, assuming they know enough to do it correctly. And many people simply will not heal fast enough if they don't go that far with their healing diet. But then after the major healing is done, it's time to switch to a long-term sustainable healthy diet, which is when debates like this become extremely valuable.

I still remember the drama among the staunch supporters of carnivore when he began advocating for fruits and honey. I only started carnivore because I had early signs of insulin resistance, so when I felt that I saw some great benefits from that and would like my health to be even more optimal, I started re-incorporating some fruits and honey as well as some veggies. Combine them with mindful eating, proper sleep and exercise, I now feel I'm at my best and don't beat myself up too much on any day that I go a bit heavier on carb since I know my health is a journey and I can always improve it the next day.

The main difference is where I plateaued on weight loss with keto when I finally got down to my target weight, I started losing weight again on carnivore which surprised me so I had to increase my calories because I didn't want to lose anymore weight, I was trying to pack on muscle which is a challenge on my 52 year old body. On carnivore I was able to achieve that. Over time I noticed some advantages on both diets so what I decided to do was do ketovore so basically I'm 80% carnivore and 20% keto incorporating what I think are the best of the best plant based products which are avocados, blueberries and sauerkraut along with my one smoothie drink a day which is a mixture of moringa, chlorella, spirulina, beet, cinnamon, ginger, green tea matcha, creatine, collagen, carnitine, iodine, apple cider vinegar, fresh lemon juice and a scoop of electrolytes, incorporating these plant based "tools" I believe gives me perfect balance with my mostly carnivore diet. From a massive subscriber to ALL of these guru's .... Over the last 5 years, here's the evolution of their thoughts.
If you are unhealthy, overweight, and out of shape. KETO & IF ... are TERIFFIC tools, if not THE TOOLS, to initiate health and longevity. However, the closer you get to a healthy body, the more likely you'll find yourself needing to move towards a more diverse diet and fitness routine. Attia, Thomas, Lane, Saladino, Berg, and many many more, have evolved to this thought process. They are not collaborating, they are just moving with the science and results almost simultaneously.
Overweight? Blood Sigar a mess? Chronic Inflammation in your joints? Tired all the time? Depressed? ... Go KETO/IF for 12 weeks. Be astonished at the results. Just have a plan to regulate for the long-term ... as in THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! Think about HEALTH-SPAN ... not just losing weight. How can you live longer? The body wants to live longer, just get better at removing the obstacles from it's ability to do so.

Thank you that was a very interesting conversation. Both of you are young fit and ripped. Loosing weight is no longer an issue for you both. You need to basically maintain your healthy state. However I feel you are comparing apples with pears. If you are obese, old and unfit it is a totally different challenge. I am 2 years into a 3 year path to loose 5 stones in weight. I am over 70 years in age and my vision is to walk over mountains in my 90s. So longevity and vitality are important for me. I fast and I eat clean food, this includes carbs and meat. My grounding comes from Buddhism and I meditate and journal every day. This helps me to undertake my love which is through hiking which I see as more of a mental challenge than a physical one. This is where Buddhist based grounding is vital for me. I feel fitter and more aware than I have been for years. For my 70th birthday I walked 1200 miles up the U.K. and I could have turned round and walked it back again. I will adapt my diet when I reach my goal weight in another year. But clean eating and variable fasting regimes will stay as another one of my life goals is to reach 100 years with no decease or pills. So in summary what works for you 2 fit guys may not be the same as us old guys who need to loose weight and are using variable fasting regimes, clean eating and low-ish carbs to get there. It has always been about balanced nutrition. Yes, certain restrictive diets (carnivore, keto etc.) are elimination diets and help restore metabolic function. However, they are not sustainable as a long term lifestyle. I used ketogenic diet and OMAD intermittent fasting strategically to lose 35 lb. Then, I started increasing protein from meats and cut down on saturated fat to increase my muscle mass with weightlifting workouts while decreasing fat (body recomposition). Now, I am eating a balanced diet (seeds, nuts, cruciferous veggies included), growing muscle, while maintaining my weight. We should not be dogmatic about nutrition and use it as a tool to our long term goals. Vegan is fine, carnivore is fine, anything is fine as long as you are aware of advantages and shortcomings of each diet and use it as a tool for your health and not as a dogma or religion. My confidence stayed super consistent and high as opposed to fluctuating levels. I do have to say I alternated my sunglasses days while running cross country due to my eyes getting sunburned in prolonged sun exposure. also fat loss has increased while maintaining everything else about the same but this is all anecdotal. Interesting conversation! Was able to relate on many aspects, as someone who did keto, but listening to my body, came to cycling carbs. I do believe that carbohydrate intake does relate to time of the year (summer Vs winter) and which carbs/fruits are available at the place of residence. I live in North Europe, and now we have plenty of different berries, which we enjoy , but in winter I have to be very careful which carbs and how much, so I'll stick to fermented vegetables. Interesting about light and grounding, I've followed the advice of doc Jack Kruse for years now, and he is actually able to explain the physics behind many of these "phenomena". After all, we are electromagnetic beings and should never forget that fact.

So take everything with a grain of salt and do what makes YOU feel best, no one else knows what makes you feel great. I ate keto then low carb from 28 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child when I had gestational diabetes. Keto probably made me even more insulin resistant and pushed my fasting blood sugar up enough that I had to inject insulin towards the end of that pregnancy, and rather than my baby being big, he came out a bit early at 37 weeks because I was still having blood pressure issues. And he's the runt of our litter so to speak. But keto helped me lose the baby weight fast!
Four years on mostly lower carb and I've had similar issues with sleep disturbances, hair loss, dizziness (probably from low blood pressure) squatting to standing but also my menstrual cycles started shortening to around 21 days sometimes. I was convinced I was in perimenopause (now 48 years old).
So at the start of this year I tried reintroducing steel cut oats and more fruit and higher carb veggies. I notice that sometimes I feel better, other times I don't - I get bloated or anxious. My cycles have gone back to almost 28 days more often BUT most recently I have started getting terrible hip pain and lower back pain leading up to my period, which I didn't have before.
Keto tends to relieve menstrual cramps and bleeding tends to be much lighter when I eat low carb. I feel like I am between a rock and a hard place trying to be either very low carb or higher carb - so the answer must be somewhere in the middle.
Again, probably common sense - not eating unnecessarily (late at night for example), small servings of grain carbs which have been fermented in some way if you want to have them at all. Pick your dairy for the probiotics and Vit K2 but avoid those "plastic-like" cheeses maybe. Eat meat and fat, but not 3 times a day or not even 7 days a week. Eat some vegetables but don't overdo it on those either.
I dunno, we all have our sensitivities and if you are trying to reverse diabetes, Keto, Carnivore and even Vegan for short stints will all help with weightloss. I actually think a combination of those is possibly a better idea than one extreme or the other for too long. Reduce your carbs (or your fats) for long enough to lose the weight you need to lose and then eat as sensibly as you can while moving your body as often as you can. Sleep earlier, be kind to others, love openly, laugh a lot and don't take things so seriously.
And join a religion if you want to do something religiously - it might be a better way to use your time and you might find some community there too. The fasting involved in Orthodox Christianity, for example, says to avoid olive oil, meat, fish, milk and dairy products every Wednesday and Friday throughout the year. So you eat in cycles. Those who still want to eat a lot on the fasts end up overeating on grain carbs (and sugar) on those days, which doesn't lead to good health. But I imagine if you ate low fat vegan for 2 days a week, and then lower carb meals that included meat for the rest of the week, you might have a good balance there. Meanwhile, I've never managed an entire day of low fat vegan... The thought terrifies me. Equally though, I've only managed carnivore, meat only, for a day or so and then I crack and have to eat something else with it. I become too acidic and my urine starts to burn. I think we are meant to be able to eat both and alternate...

Here's my issue. Both of these men got healthy through fasting. Their experiential knowledge includes years of fasting and low carbs which led to their current bodies.
So here we are years later and they are telling people that fasting isn't as effective as they felt it used to be. This is probably true ... FOR THEM.
If you are obese with extreme insulin resistance eating 6 meals per day is snacks and is exhausted by simply mowing the front yard, then yes, fast. Go low carb, heal your body while completely changing your habits around feeding and food.
If the above relates to you, then you are not in the same position, mind or body, as these two men and what they are talking about may not be applicable to you.
Edit: i am at a mid yellow bmi range (yes, i agree with the issues with BMI ratings but this is simply to demonstrate a point). I have come to this by fasting and low carb. I have always inclided vegetables, fruits (dates rule) and even some bread items, though rarely.
Before fastong i tried everything to he healthy amd i simply couldn't do it. I HAD TO lose the addiction to sigar snd carbs. I HAD TO get out of insulin resistance and fasting did that. I am not these two me, but i may be in a few years. Only then would i consider dropping the fasting lifestyle and go easy in carbs.

My health can't risk these guys telling people just kidding you should reintroduce carbs. Well this makes sense. I was zero carb carnivoree for a while and my weight loss stalled. I added some veg and fruit back in and I felt beter and weight loss started again. I occasionally eat high carb foods like dates but i will take 2 Gymnema Sylvestre befor i eat those. Gymnema Sylvestre is a sugar blocker but i don't think it actually stops the sugar completely, i think it just slows the absorption. The reason is it blocks the sugar receptors but it can only last so long. As long as the sugar is still in your intestines it can be absorbed at any point including in the colon before it comes out your backside. I used to have heart palpitaions if I ate too much pastries eg doughnuts but if I took 2 Gymenma before I wouldn't have heart palpitations but it should be noted that I also started taking digestive enzymes at the same time which probably also contributed. If you have heart palpitaions after consuming sugar or fat take the digestive enzymes. If you have or have had fatty liver you have also had fatty pancreas and your body is reacting to having tryglecerides and sugar not being broken down properly.

I think before I did real fasting regularly and keto over a longer term my relationship with food never really reset in any way and you kind of just take food for granted. Once you've fasted enough and restricted carbs enough, you APPRECIATE them again. You're happy to eat healthier foods you would've turned your nose up at before. I think keto and fasting are very useful tools if you're very overweight and need to lose a significant amount especially if you're the kind of person that needs to see regular progress to help keep you motivated until your relationship with food resets and healthier eating becomes more of a habit.

I watched his video where he shared his bloodwork and his concern over his rising SHBG and lowest free T.
I’m experiencing the same issue currently.
He seemed to feel that the carnivore diet created some “hormonal signaling” that down regulated his free T by raising SHBG.
He felt….. The carnivore diet signals that WINTER IS COMING, and it’s lack of abundance. A way for nature to stop you from reproducing in a period of scarcity.
Adding back carbs/fruits changes this signaling and lowers SHBG and raises free T.
Seems like it worked for him. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with just letting this process happen seasonally.
When then local farmstands have run out of carbs. Stop eating them. And let your oxalates dump for next season.

    • @Ryshaad
      @Ryshaad 10 місяців тому +7

When you look at his lifestyle, you realize why he was having issues. He is extremely active daily (surfs and exercises for hours) and when you're low body fat already, you need the additional energy coming in because you have nothing to draw from. The best way to do that is carbs because you can keep stuffing your face, whereas with fat and protein are self limiting due to being satiated. Meanwhile, the other 95+% of people will never require that massive amount of energy, so an overwhelming majority of people won't run into that issue and do just fine on keto/carnivore.

@@vanessac1965 Yes and no, low quality science always changes, because is low quality. But things that are not based on opinions and poorly done studies never change...
My issue with Saladino's opinion is that ancient humans just didn't have access to what he is eating today, let's say that you were able to get huge amounts of honey every day for the whole tribe (kinda weird and lucky to get it daily but ok let's follow the idea) then there is the problem with fruit, ancient fruit was not like we have today, the amount of sugar was a lot less, when I googled how an ancient banana looked, looked like a unripe plantain, same with all other fruits... I mean berries and low carb fruits could be ok and enough to signal your insulin if you can't get it with meat, which is also weird because meat definitely spikes blood sugar and therefore insulin, perhaps if you only eat red meat you could eventually get into issues but it is something I still want to double check monitoring my glucose, and even then, some white meats are quite prone to spike blood sugar. And there is the problem with organ meats, he was eating a lot of those, which is also a big no no in carnivore, given the high bioavailability of everything, maybe the sugar is causing oxidative damage and those vitamins are putting to use repairing it... And also, did he ever showed a mineral lab work to actually confirm that his levels were off?? I just learned that analysis can be done to see the balance over time using a hair. So yeah I have doubts about Saladino's approach and believe more to the pure carnivores and low carb people. As for Thomas, seems like a different case, he just puts a video out for every single study he finds and is completely nonsense, and you can see that he abandoned keto in favor of his social life... Not being able to eat carbs is quite annoying while being with people... Anyway, just my opinion.

As for insulin spikes, it's well documented that the body benefits from being exposed to some amount of stress. I believe the benefits of intermittent fasting was based around that concept. I started intermittent fasting around 13 years ago, long before I even knew that it was a thing. Initially, it caused me to experience periods throughout the day where I had a lot of mental clarity and felt very sharp in general.
That sensation would later become less frequent, and it's been several years since the last time I experienced it, despite still only eating a large meal once every day. It's a habit I have, not something I practice consciously. I suspect that the fasting is a large reason for why people typically assume that I'm in my early 20s despite turning 35 this year, but that's pure speculation. I also haven't been sick since back around the time that I was in junior high school, I think. That could also be the result of genes or other things, for all I know.
For people who want to trigger autophagy, I have no clue how to do so in the most effective way, but my guess would be to expose your body and mind to stress every once in a while. Fasting is possibly one of the ways to do so, but it seems to have diminishing returns, which makes sense - you can't quite call something stress if your body experiences it so frequently that you become comfortable with it. I think it's fair for Saldino to suggest that fasting isn't some benign intervention, but I think you'd have to be quite impressionable in order to assume that it was. I think it's great that he's found something that works better for him than what he did up until recently, but I'm a bit surprised by how he suddenly seems to be tearing it all down from top to bottom 😅

I avoided any issues with carnivore just by eating a variety of meats, including things like like eggs (yolk is the most important, can skip the egg white if you like) and organ meats, both of which have amazing amount of nutrients. I suggest the fattier cuts of meat, not too much lean meat and the rarer the better for things that are safe to eat rare; you'll have a better time absorbing nutrients that way. Great stuff! We all need to really to be open minded and listen that maybe its not all cut and dry...but maybe a lil grey. Dr. Saladino and Thomas are worth listening to...we really need to remain open minded that we are all still learning.

If you want to follow earlier and now nomadic tribes, yes honey and fruits are celebrated, but not eaten often. I spent 3yrs in Central and South America and all throughout the Amazon we would gather fruits. They don't have a winter, but there is a wet and dry season. Toward the end of the wet season and shortly after, you can find bananas and berries everywhere, but for months of the dry season fruits don't bloom so they become very scarce.
