I was born very close to Islington in Hornsey very near the police station, I know Islington well, it is fascinating to know that such a horrific crime happened so close to home. Maybe she was a miserable so and so, but she did not deserve to be murdered and the arrogance of the man is infuriating. Margaret did well my goodness what a lucky lady. Thank you for your kind comment, Patricia. Islington is a part of London I am not familiar with, but I intend to visit it as soon as this wretched coronavirus thing ends... Doing some research at the British Library last August I arrived early and so walked a little way along the Euston Road - and I was quite astonished to come across the Rising Sun (the pub which figured prominently in the first of my videos - Robert Wood). I was quite thrilled to have come across it (now called The Rocket) and went inside and wandered about a little, imagining the chief protagonists in that murder milling about...

      @Peggy SmulliganMy understanding is that the name "flat" came about because the living unit was all on one floor - no upstairs/downstairs. Typically a large house divided into separate living units - each on a single floor. In UK the name "apartment" is used for upscale, more luxurious units - large spacious top end units.

    I think that Margaret Seddon got off in part because of what I refer to as "the Lizzie Borden effect".
    Borden was found not guilty by an all male jury due to the belief that a woman was not capable of murdering her parents.
    This is, as usual, a great story. Well narrated, documented and the photos were wonderful.

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  4 роки тому +3

      That is an astute point, and I agree with you. There was a tendency to see women as very much subordinate to the man at that time, and even if the woman was strongly believed to have committed the murder, her guilt was lessened by her acting "under the authority" of the man.

It’s unbelievable how many people got away with murder back then, and these are just the ones that we know of. How many other deaths were attributed to natural causes and were never even suspected of being murders? It’s a chilling thought for sure.

    Thank you for your insights into this perennially interesting case. I used to occasionally pass 63 Tollington Park when driving to work with my father many years ago and it always looked rather intimidating!!
    Obviously you could not include many of the incidental details such as the Hooks quickly being given their notice to quit or Seddon complaining about being given the wrong change (6d) at the Music Hall.
    The house was heavily populated with bedrooms subdivided to accommodate all Seddon's family and Mary Chator the servant so you wonder which of them really knew just what was going on.
    There is also the intriguing detail of Seddon and his wife running a second-hand clothes shop in Seven Sisters Road, the books for which were destroyed by Seddon in a rage after he discovered (or suspected) that Margaret Seddon was having an affair as was briefly mentioned during evidence in the trial. Was the affair with Cameron who Mrs Seddon married so quickly after Seddon's execution?
    Thanks for the details of what happened to the family subsequently - I assume Maggie and William Seddon remained in the UK since they did not emigrate to the USA. I wonder what happened to them.

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  2 роки тому +4

      Many thanks - yes, there are many details I omitted, which you allude to. I didn't know about the sub-divisions of the house, which is interesting. I recall the bit about Seddon making a fuss over 6d at the Music Hall - it seems typical of his extremely grasping character! If Margaret was having an affair, it doesn't seem likely that it was with Cameron, as he appears to have been in Liverpool at this time, (he was a carpenter) and my assumption has been that she met him after the trial on her return to Liverpool. I am so delighted to have another episode in this series to watch! I am a particular fan of every episode in this whole series and I do hope many more will follow. It is so rare that a full and proper examination of the words and actions that were said and done at the time is presented. I watch enthralled and in awe at the extent of dedicated work that must be involved in bringing such in depth insight into the complex workings of each case. You are truly gifted sir. Please, please continue with further and similar cases.

    In the early 90s I lived in London and on weekend I used to take my bike out all ove rthe city looking for historic murder houses (i was that kind of youth). 63 Tollington Park is one that is not only still standing but looks pretty much as it did at the time, indeed the whole street does (many don't, Crippen's house is long gone and Rillington Place doesn't even exist as a street any more). The pub in Camden Town that Miss Barrow owned is still there too.

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  4 роки тому +2

      Yes indeed - I share your interest in such matters. The Rising Sun in Euston Road is still very much as it was at the time of the Robert Wood murder (the first in this series) and the house where that murder took place is much the same also - although the street name has changed over the years. The pub in Tottenham Court Road which Miss Barrow's father ran is also still there.

    I truly enjoyed this video and the series as well. The narrators voice is pleasant and imparts the scene he’s describing perfectly.
    History is literally littered with people who commit this particular type of crime, where someone covets what another has so much that after they’ve picked clean the finances of their victims, they murder them, lest they be publicly outed as the frauds, embezzlers, and thieves that they are.

    @26:25, Good grief, what sort of steroid pumped flies did they have back then? *each* flypaper had enough arsenic to kill an adult human?
    What I wonder about those times, was how many completely undetected, unsuspected, poisonings there were. I also wonder why nobody ever raised a defence of adsorption of arsenic from one’s surrounds. The wallpaper, for instance in that attractive green shade. It was known that such things contained arsenic. After all, William Morris, who specialised in “nature patterns” owned one of, if not the, biggest arsenic mine in England. I’m quite surprised Marshall Hall never submitted a defence on these grounds. It’s of a kind with ladies soaking the fly papers to get arsenic for their complexions.

They have high integrity, intellect always thrilling and there is always the unexpected towards the end. They are all good enough for BBC radio or Television to broadcast. I have one question and that is with your introductions you appear to speak with no script or notes yet you perfectly relate what you have to say. Are you working from memory with your introductions or do you know enough in order to ad-lib. Finally, with your expert knowledge of law and research you would make an ideal barrister. Also your word power is second to none. I must concede on occasion I have to reach for the dictionary. Seasons greetings.

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  4 роки тому +1

      I agree - Spilsbury went out of favour in the 1930s and received a great deal of criticism for the confidence he had in his own methods and judgement (some said over-confidence), but he was a remarkable man, who did more for forensic science and its use in courts (over mere circumstantial evidence) than anyone else. He carried out 400-500 autopsies each year for nearly 40 years. It must have been a grim occupation - and he committed suicide in his own lab just before Christmas in 1947. An irony that must surely not have escaped him at the time, that he ended up on a coroner's slab himself.

    It is possible that Miss Barrow and Mrs Grant had an affectionate relationship, and that was the reason Miss Barrow adopted her friend’s children. Women ‘of independent means’ who never married in an era when that cast derision and suspicion on them might have developed a thick skin and brusque manner in defense. Yet consider how quickly the Seddons won over Eliza simply by pretending to be kind. Eliza might indeed have been ‘difficult,’ but that label might have been placed on any middle-aged woman who lived independently in that time. How ironic that her actual murderer - the one who likely put the poison to her lips - was acquitted by a jury of men because she appeared on the witness stand to be meek, soft-spoken, tearful, and because she was a mother.

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  4 роки тому +2
