Season 5 Episode 5: Poison is the subtlest murder weapon, and poisoners are sometimes the most brutal of killers, gaining their victims' trust and harming them over time to disguise the murder. Investigators must see through the unusual circumstances to bring these murders to light.
The New Detectives is an American docudrama where world-renowned forensics experts and criminal investigators solve a wide range of cases.
Some scenes in this program have been reenacted, due to the sensitive nature of the show, viewer discretion is advised.
well Georgia Weaver got what she wanted, a home (Prison) a family (Inmates) and all her expenses paid.
Haha well said
Unfortunately the victims family and the family of the killer have to pay tax to keep the piece of crap in jail.
and well secured environment, better than a gated community.
@ikawpipa lol true definition of gated community 😭😭😭
Accurate! But if I may, I've got a minor correction/thing to add, "all of her expenses paid" by the hard work of others (Tax Payers), and to be 'taken care of' by others. (Corrections guards, nurses, and other staff)
She may not have every whim attended to as she wished, but I hope she enjoys _all_ that prison life has to offer 🙄 I hope it was worth what she took from the world and her family. 😒
Impressive police work in the Dowler case by detective (later police chief) Browne. This is how all investigations should be carried out!
How the f*** can you do that to your own child?!
It's actually a severe mental health disorder called *Munchausen-by-Proxy*, where a caregiver seeks attention and sympathy by intentionally making their dependent(s) sick... 😢 These are classic cases, and so I very highly doubt that actual murder was ever the intention (evidenced by any other lack of motive, insurance policies having lapsed, etc). It just wasn't very well known back when these cases happened, and it's still not very well understood to this day. It's incredibly sad, really....
@@lonelyzebra7865 I know of that disorder... she didn't do it because she wanted to take care of her though. She wanted the insurance money.
@Fay D - not "uncommon" whaaat!? this condition is extremely rare and you know it! not many mothers ever kill their own children at all! more fathers beat/kill their kids than mothers...
Simple, she's a Sociopath
Hilley was a pure psychopath. No one was safe around her. Thank God she's gone.
Very good police n forensic work. Much harder in the late 70's
"manipulated the warden"... I suspect sex was involved.
Triple condom situation right there ...
louiseleu ... I am an psychologist ... makes no sense ... so lay down get comfortable and tell me why you skipped english classes
@@rickyelvis3215 a* psychologist. In most cases, an is used before words that begin with vowels, not words beginning with consonants. Class, this concludes today's lesson. ✌✌😃🤗🤭😁👋
Wait- in the first case the warden gives the woman who killed her husband and poisoned her daughter a 3 day furlough? WTH!?
I can't believe yours is the first comment i've come across so far that mentions this. WTF!?!? 🤨 Exactly! Did he give her taxi money too? So she'd have no trouble getting back. 😏 I really hope he suffered consequences for his actions.
😳 hadn’t seen this one! Why did he even ever think that anyone COULD WRAP their minds around this one!! Thank you for sharing this ☝️
What for a horrible thing to do to your own child, shocking she suffered so long and didn't know that her own mother poisoning her, to want her dead. What for a greedy mother! Selfish self-centred attitude very cruel.
And then to find out that she murmured her husband too. Horrible just horrible! A mother should be the most trusted person In your life. I hope she gets her punishment. But more so I hope that her daughter will still be able to get a better life.
David Albert Dowler's appeal was denied in 1989. His next appeal hearing is scheduled to take place in December of 2022. As far as I can find out, Georgia Weaver died in prison, although no date of death was ever posted. For more information on Marie Hilley, consult Wikipedia.
Find A Grave says she (Georgia Weaver) died in 2017.
I truly enjoy your series. I would appreciate if you kept the music low enough so i can hear you talk.. Thank you so much..
agree I can hardly hear the voices...I am only on a phone though 😞
Yeah, please pay attention to the comments.everyone is saying the same thing, turn down the background music so the narrator could be heard ...
sounds great here, that's weird. try listening to it with headphones to see if it's how your audio is set up. sometimes the music is put on rear speakers so if your rear speakers are set to the main, you'll hear mostly music

Testing for Arsenic should be part of standard procedure for anyone.
I thought the same
I love your programs you show. Thank you. God bless
I figure at the time this was still not talked about that much, but the first story (the mother poisoning her daughter for no reason other than attention seeking) seems a classic case of Münchhausen by proxy syndrome.
Her daughter was insured and it had lapsed Marie Hilley tried to get the policy started up again but 3 cheques bounced..
I don't care what you call it. It's pure evil.
I absolutely agree. Reducing the situation to "murder as its own reward" is really not helpful. Münchhausen by Proxy bells are ringing for sure.
History shows if you "don't care" about the psychological motivations for murder, it can't be prevented or addressed successfully - only punished.
@@ScreeFi440 to some degree, doctors have to become better at recognizing this type of evil, si that it can be stopped. Although then the problem js that it may just restart somewhere else. When mental health is looked at things become more complicated and not just black and white. But I just want people to stop killing other people.
I was so sure it was a case of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy too...but they never mentioned it to the end of the segment. I wonder when did they make this documentary...maybe the term wasn't popular yet back then... But I also think if her goal was to kill, it might not the case here. Unless the death of the husband of 20+ years wasn't planned. The old photo in the thumbnail made me sad, they looked like such a normal, happy couple...
32:23: "I have a gun in my car."
32:30: "I have to get something from my car."
Damn. Some people are seriously sick in the head. People are just damn evil. How do you poison your daughter?
You answered your own question: The mother was “seriously sick in the head.” The mental illness is called Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP), and it’s extremely rare (thank goodness!).
@@voraciousreader3341 it’s Munchausens
Being married 25 years and having 2 kids is not what it takes to have a happy marriage.
There are many people divorced who were married for 25 years or more and with multiple kids.

GREAT TEAMWORK GUYS
I've never seen a test of hair done this way, just taking all of it and shoving it into a test tube. I've seen it tested in a handful of cases, and the hair is cut into 1/2 inch pieces which represents a month's growth. Then each section determines how long the poisoning was conducted and when it started.
Maybe they don’t do it with the preliminary test and that’s part of further testing?
Why the hell would you let your mother inject you with something if she’s not medically trained????
true
You can learn to give injections. It's not that difficult. She told her daughter that they were suggested by a friend who was a nurse . murderpedia.org/female.H/h/hilley-audrey.htm
@@elizabethsohler2410 pretty true. I mean hell, junkies learn to shoot themselves up all the time. Is it really that difficult for people to believe that family members could learn to give their loved ones injections of something?
Maybe because it's her mother, and we're trained to trust our parents, regardless.
Carol was in so much pain she was desperate.
Some people are just plain nuts!
Mother can give patient injections in hospital?
💥11:20💥 ok ok so he says she didn't fit the mold of a murderer !!! I'm sorry but can someone tell me what that mold looks like ?_____________ Because watching many documentaries, and shows on murderers from what I've seen is they come in all kinds of different genders, ethnicity's, religion's, ages, mother's, father's, boyfriend's, girlfriends, x boyfriend's, x girlfriends, sisters, brothers, friends, strangers, bus drivers, nurses, teachers, hair dressers, students, I mean you get it right?! (over the top a bit I know). So for the detectives to not think outside of the box and examine all possibilities was careless and could have saved this girl's life. Just sayin! Thanks for listening/reading.
Doctors routinely ignore optional alternative diagnoses. Cops are not the sharpest pencils either.
I mean once one detective said we suspect everyone and no one,ha.
Kat Marie I agree, but this was back in 79, things were obviously much different then. Forensics were nothing like they are now. As well as computers not really being used back then. I would hope now, people would see the warning signs of arsenic poisoning.
I think the ‘aunt frida’ seemed to know an awful lot even managed to find the poison and hand it to police.. I hope police checked her too.
You are right. Also I’ve watched programs where psychologists/psychiatrists analyse murderers and identify all the signs that were there from birth, poor parenting, cruelty to animals, etc, etc. Yet some of these murderers had been convicted, served light sentences and then were released to kill others. It’s great being wise after the fact but if they are so wise as to be able to diagnose psychopathic behaviour then why were they released from custody.
If the answer is “They have served their sentence” then that is ridiculous. Comparing release of dangerous criminals to an industrial situation where a machine without safety guards kills or maims operators it isn’t an adequate remedy to just stop using the machine for a number of years is it?
What a mother. So horrible
This video is not very good. With Marie Hilley her first escape was completely omitted. She changed her name and appearance, got a job and got married. She talked about her twin sister a lot and than convinced her husband that his wife died and she is the twin sister. What a woman
Yeah that was totally ridiculous.
Upon entering, investigators and police discovered that this channel is AMAZING!

The actor who played Dowler was so much better looking than the real thing. Not on topic, I know, but I felt it had to be said.

You do a great job by uploading this video.Thank s.👍
If she had not written those bad checks and been arrested when she was Carol would've likely not been around for much longer
Munchausen by Proxy.
Why did they not put Dowler away right off the bat! They should have nailed him much, much sooner. Sloppy, sloppy cop work!
In the first story I don't think the woman should have been buried next to her husband.
Ok Mr. Correction officer, can you please explain to the world and to the people incarcerated on minor drug or traffic charges why they had to remain in prison to complete their sentences, but you saw it fit to allow a convicted murderer and attempted murderer the exclusive opportunity to be released from prison unsupervised (no less) for three days????

@ 35:45 smoking in court...how things have changed...
When they said "Because he already had the ultimate sentence, Dowler wasn't tried for the other murders", I said GOOD!
Too many times I watch these shows and the government spends millions and millions of dollars hauling some guy from state to state so every small-town prosecutor in the country gets to put his name in the file!!
She had to go to jail because she was racking up medical bills? What a waste of time and money to imprison people for being poor.
She was writing bad checks all over ... it was not due to skipping out on her bills. It’s a crime to intentionally write bad checks, including Federal Mail/Wire Fraud if they are mailed to the recipient.
Comments are welcome
What is wrong with you guys anyway? So you're out here poisoning folks now huh. You got just one more time to poison somebody and that's it. I'm not playing this time.
For some reason (I don't know why) I think that David Dowler was a kinda funny serial killer. He should have been in Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Especially, with all that stuff stashed in his garage. No CIA agent has such booty in his storeroom. 😁😂

Munchausen by proxy. Seems to be more and more common. The poisoner loves the attention of hospital staff and ppl in their lives look at them as long suffering care givers. This is the main motive. The sympathy of others.
so when you live in the city where this happened and your mom shows you the two places where one she knocked on the door to get help but then left and two where she used to live and also where she died on the doorstep . then you watch a badly done movie about this story and hear on detective show after detective show you get tired of it and think omg not the marie hilley story again! lol still if you haven't heard of it its interesting and she was a horrible person. the movie shows more of what happened while she was on the run she was just as horrible of a person then pretending to be her own twin sister. lol i hate this story now!

With these unexplained symptoms the Dr.s should search for poison. Arsenic, thallium, etc. When the person starts getting better in the absence of the poisoner, that's a huge sign. As is dr. shopping. Severe stomach pain and flu symptoms are classic arsenic signs. As are the fingernail marks. Hair can tell dr.s exactly when and how many times the arsenic has been administered. Higher than avg levels are telling too.
Don't you know we are all C.I.A. agents on u tube?
So plastic can contaminate the hair samples and then they take it out from the paper rap and place them in a plastic container......
@Flavia Renevey They wrap biological samples in paper because, unlike plastic bags or wrapping, paper allows the sample to breathe, so to speak; this allows the sample to dry out and not develop mold or mildew that might destroy or contaminate any DNA that might be contained in the samples. When they get to the laboratory, they then are able to use plastics for testing purposes. Hope this helps clarify the reasons for the use of paper versus plastic. 😃😀👋✌
@@johnnabuzby6103 Yes. But they put them into a plastic container in the lab....
@@flaviarenevey6719 It's hard to understand if you're speaking of placing the hair samples into plastic containers for testing, or for storage. If you mean while they're testing, well, they can't very well test them or add digest buffers, sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid, or any other liquids in the paper wrap; it has to be in plastic or glass then. If you're speaking about storing the samples in plastic, that's a different story. I think if the paper wrapped sample is stored in plastic, it's not a problem, since air can still circulate around the sample. If not, then I agree with you about the contamination.
