"To be an artist all you have to do is start making things" YES!
The art assignment is the reason why i want to be an art history teacher.
Wow, no shit. That must be one of the best compliments they can get.
Good luck for your journey :)
Fidlarlindsey It’s the reason why I’m currently in a Museum Studies graduate program.
same
I'm so happy for you 😊 I got inspired to start my own channel, but I'm more inclined to the literary arts
HAIRCUT LOOKS SO CUTE!
IKR?
FK YEAH MASSEDUCTION-ERA ANNIE CLARK
Totally! I always thought that the bangs unnecessarily covered her face. But this is really sweet :)
Yeah, she has a pretty good hair artist.
Its art
I love how you don't limit art to the obvious! Very nice video.
Nossaki art is closely linked to philosophy. Art is everything.
Thank you Sarah, it IS a discipline. I feel like being an "artist" means not loosing your imagination. Trying out a new thing just to try it and see what happens.
Strong agree!
For me it's less about being an artist (whatever that means) and more about who you're becoming while you're creating. Take it easy when you are coming home to yourself. That's what becoming an artist means, it takes time and practice. It's maybe even more about unbecoming everything that isn't really you, everything that you think an artist should be. It's about authenticity because whenever you're creating something freely, you are restoring your soul. Becoming more authentic.
It's simple: never stop creating new shit.
@@driesketels great comment ...
OH WOW SO EXCITED. I have read this book and I LOVE IT. Preorder it: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/601958/you-are-an-artist-by-sarah-urist-green/9780143134091?ref=PRH89EC6E042E&aid=32820&linkid=PRH89EC6E042E Get the book! Yay! Wow!
p.s. If you've been wondering why I wrote and hosted a few art assignment videos over the last several months, now you know! It was to give Sarah more time to write!
The assignments I managed to complete were all done in collaboration with friends, so I can't wait until we can follow this book together :)
This channel deserves so much more exposure! I love Sarah’s complex knowledge & charming delivery - thank you for enriching my relationship with art, TAA Team!
Something divine brought me here. Fedup with life in general, I only recently discovered I have an art to create beautiful things of my own by putting together pottery, plants and ropes created by other artists. It brings peace to my eyes.
I wish there was an Art History CrashCourse!
Our recent series was a bit of an experiment to see how such a thing might be approached: ua-cam.com/play/PLdGqz6dgvIzb8HKBYcO0b4Mfx3HwkexyI.html. Would love your thoughts on how best to structure an AP Art History!

I love how contemporary art is getting more and more encouraging to mingle with the everyday life and how its practices are parts of it. The relationships between artists artworks and spectators are also becoming closer.
This makes me so excited! As someone who doesn't consider themselves an artist but has a strong creative itch waiting to be scratched, I can't wait to see the assignments and the art that the readers make. Alas, congrats on the book!
This book is going to be so much fun! I'm excited to find community within the pages, and open up new connections with people sharing the experience. It's gunna rule.
Hooray! I'm excited that you're excited. Can't wait to help facilitate new experiences and connections.
Agree!
How are you planning to open up new experiences with those people mentioned in the book?
@@driesketels I am looking forward more to discovering, via social media/discord/etc, other people who are using the book to create more art.
@@charlottehollingsworth9125 Thanks for your reply Charlotte. I read a lot, but never had an online experience connected to the book I'm reading. Sounds very intriguing. Is there going to be some kind of Facebook page and things alike where people will be talking about their creations and stuff? I'm not sure what I need to imagine.
I just found out that you're John Green's wife, like what?
Didn't even know I was subscribed to his wife's channel!
Muhammad Mirsab WAIT WHAT!?
We all now know that we need a video about the word: "ARTSY"
You're the kind of person I'd like to meet at a party but never do. I've just finished working a week of night shifts and I'm watching this rather than going to bed. 😁 This must surely be a testament to the quality of your videos. Many thanks.
I’m so buying your book, lovely video and book idea👍
This is one of the best things that has happened to me in 2020! Some of the artists that you talked about might not be famous in an orthodox way but then who cares. People don't stop making wonderful food just cause they aren't on master chef.
So go on people ,make some art.:-)
I cannot wait for the book. The Art Assignment rekindled my love for the arts and my own ability to create. As an aside: your hair looks great this length.
At one point, 30 years ago, someone first told me I was a "working artist." I agreed I was producing fine art photography while I was working nights in a supermarket.
Weirdest sentence ive heard all year: "Art can be a M E A T S U I T"...
You're welcome.
@@theartassignment thank you very much
Welcome to Homo Sapiens.
We can make all sort of tales that shape the reality: the trust (in money, in after life, in laws, in gods...), the beauty, what is good and bad and, what your comment points, what is art.
Contemporary art seems to have invented "the tale about what is art", but art always have been a social convention. A Meat suit its just weird as long you believe that art in some kind of truth, the only one in this time we live.
If you want to know more:
-The invention of art: A cultural history by Larry Shiner.
-Sapiens: A brief history of humankind.
The last one, in its first pages (you dont even need read the whole book), explains really well how Homo Sapiens, with scientific data (as long we know), has been manufacturing taled that shape the reality, fictiond that can hurt or heal.
A Meat suit its weird as long you believe in weirdness, in some king of art canon, etc..
@@javideas I totally agree with you! It triggers the intellectual in me, when people say "contemporary art is no art at all, anyone could do it and it doesn't even look good".
I guess people who believe the statement I just quoted see good art as having to have aesthetic value, which, while it can be an indicator of good art, is not the only parameter as to judge art. I think these people should describe what they feel! And although I would rather look at Gustav Klimt's "Beethovenfries" than at a meatsuit, I don't mute the TV when its airing advertisements.
@@rfrec733 thanks for the klimt recommendation, didnt knew it! Was funny read your comment minutes after my family asked me, when they come back to the living room, why the TV is muted..."I dont like ads". Maybe I am a little HSP here
This is an inspiring talk indeed ! To me, art is a way to life! Without art, life is no fun. When you perform some art, you get immersed into the act, it is celestial moment.
I have ordered your book to use in my class and wish there was a version of this video that isn't an ad for it. The content, beyond the advertisement for the book, is powerful.
Sarah it was a wondrous day the day your programme appeared, like an answered prayer for something to light me up and shoot me into my abandoned studio. Now I grab an espresso, and visit a gallery, or an outdoor show with you then dream of what to make next. You fired me up! As an aside, I dearly wish you would give me time to digest all your juicy thoughts! I'm forever replaying and only then realizing how brilliant what you said was. A breath or two between sentences would be appreciated. It's luscious information and there's alot of it to digest. Have you watched John Thornton's art docs? He gives us time to reflect and enjoy the art, which is after all what it's all about. Thank you for your gorgeously filmed videos and all your efforts to expose us to new artists and galleries. It has enriched my life.
Waving from Toronto,
Nina
art is that which unites the creator and the creation
"and what you make might look ugly" ha ha, but uglyness can be loved too 😂 I'm already looking forward to this book! ❤️
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK I WANT ALL THE GREEN BOOKS
This book could not be coming out at a better time! I feel like many people really needed this right now
It was so cool to see Lonnie Holley pop up on this. When I was in high school, he used to come into the grocery store I worked at and we would talk about art and aesthetics. I was in a super small town in Alabama (Childersburg), and felt like I never got the chance to talk about things like that.
So cool! Lonnie Holley is an incredible person, visionary artist, and a born teacher. His assignment in the book is really good, too :)
Sounds like a great gift for the creative people in my family and among my friends :-)
Now I want to go back and revisit all the old episodes 💗
I actually just started my first year of earning my bfa at my dream art school, and I really admire how you bring the experiences and freedoms of creativity that many artists experience in the so called “art world”, and bring them into the so called “real world”. In class we read an article from the president of our school back in the 70’s, and he talked a lot about how we have to keep our school hidden away, and never let the regular people in, because they’ll just try to stop us and shame us. But I think the only way these stigmas around artists, and art in general, will go away is to show the world why we do what we do, and why it’s so important to us. And I think you’re definitely doing that with this book. It sounds amazing and I can’t wait!
I love the your open definition of what art is and how to do it. That is one of my favourite things about this channel. We are free to explore. I look forward to getting this book.
THIS is your art, creating art in others.
Art Assignment allowed me to consider and reconsider what I thought of as art and inspired me to both appreciate and participate more in art. I am very thankful for it!
I really only found you today - 10 Sept 2019 - after watching John's vlogbrothers video in which he raved about you and your new book and then mentioned that you created the art assignment. I had no idea that you were involved with that program. While I had seen the odd video here and there, I did not know that you (Sarah) specifically were involved!! So now I have to go back and binge watch all of the the art assignment videos!!! I might even get some new prompts for the digital scrapbooking that I love to make.
Now we just need Katherine to write a book and then the whole Green group will be authors!
I saw Vivian Maier, I saw myself haha. Being an artist does not require "Fame". We are all indeed! an artist.
This is such exciting news! I can't wait to read the book and to see the new assignment videos! I've been following this channel since Meet in the Middle 5 years ago, and while I love all the videos you guys make, I've definitely missed actually doing the assignments. Thanks for teaching me almost everything I know about art, and congratulations on the book!
So excited for the book, and more assignments!
I am so pumped for this book. I loved the original assignments and can't wait to share them again with friends.
Def want to get this so I can share with my students! Love how affirming your channel is of art and its boundaries. Of course what you expect from PBS!!
I think I'll say I'm a doctor today. Will that make me a doctor? It used to be that skill and talent was inherent in the description of what it meant to be an artist. I'll argue that that is why we have buildings like the Sistine Chapel, Parthenon and the Louvre. Sculptures from the likes of Bernini and Michelangelo. Have you ever stood in front of the baldacchino and gazed through to the Cathedra Petri at St. Peter's in Rome? It's quite a different feeling than looking at someone's trashy unmade bed.
It's less about being something (an artist for example) and more about who you're becoming while you're creating.
I'd buy that book, Dries. You should write it.
@@theartassignment Hahahaha wow this is very coincidental... I wrote a comment on Surajfinearts channel just a couple of days ago on september 1st I think. And got over 20 reply's of people saying the same thing... That I should write a book...
Anyway, it means the world coming from a channel like yours :) Thanks
Ways of thinking!!! I love it!
I’m currently in an illustration program, and I love these videos a lot. I’m fresh out of high school, I had to move across the country to go to my art college of choice, and the first few days have been very overwhelming-so naturally I was in good need of a pep talk about art.
Thanks so much, and keep up the great content :)
Good, good luck. When the pep talk wears off, try this one: ua-cam.com/video/IRPyql3cezo/v-deo.html
I love limbo! Thank you for seeing it as art!
The Art Assignment and this video is such a cup full of joy
this pep talk brought me back to my easel today, thank you.
YOU are the real inspiration...!💚
Excited to check this out! I love sharing your channel with my apprentices.
Hit the thumbs up at the beginning of the video, automatically went to hit it again at the end! I have two art degrees and have worked professionally as an artist for fifteen years, but I still love assignments and prompts from other people. So excited for the book!

Amazing book... thank you, Art Assignment! 😍
Thx to explain that ART is a wide subject !! Love it 🖤
I'm so excited! I love your art assignment interpretations and responses and I've always craved a prompt to make art. Sometimes we just need a little reminder that even the silliest or most whimsical ideas can come to fruitions as something wonderful and meaningful :)

Great! All the best. Will try to get that book.
Love it love it love it! I just asked my friend to preorder it for me since im not in the state.
