I always tell my students, ‘if you make art, you’re an artist. If you make art that a lot of people like, you’re a popular artist.’ I leave out ‘successful’ because that’s up to the individual to define for themselves.
Great advice
Great I am now your student
Thank you for this video. I wasn't expecting just simply speaking the words "I am an artist" to bring me to tears. I have PTSD after being in an abusive relationship for a few years in my early 20s. An interesting thing about trauma is that it can affect your ability to imagine. For a period of about 7 years I was just simply unable to do art or create anything. I grew up loving art and music, and I always identified myself as being a creative person. Losing that part of my identity was very difficult. It's now been 4 years since I left my abuser, and I'm just starting to actually get excited about art and I've started creating my own pieces again. That's how I know I'm healing. Sorry if this is TMI. I just wanted you to know that the message of your video touched this random stranger very deeply.
Wow. Thank you for sharing. I have said a prayer for your today. May your art-making continue to bring joy and hope into your life.
Hugs ❤
Hi! I have PTSD too. After I saw my father die for a long time. And then I lost my job and went into surgery myself. Look at Wim Hof's method, it helped me.
Thank you for sharing this 💛

I am dedicating 2024 to art! Claiming my artist self this year!
Yes. Do it.
This matches well with a principle I've held for a while, replacing negative with positive. Replace "I can't draw" with "I want to get better at drawing", "I want to be an artist" with "I want to be a better artist". It makes a difference
I agree. Our beliefs have a big impact
oh, i feel like the second one especially is a really good tip - thank you!
....I never wanted to "be an artist" ........I wanted to paint what I saw in my head. You have to learn the mechanics of color and what strokes produce the images you want ....how to capture light, shadow, warmth, cool........it requires work. Being an "artist" is in your soul, it's the need to create and express what you see, hear, feel. Put a group of 8 yr. olds in a room with paint and canvas, walk them through painting a tree....you'll find the artist, if your lucky.......one. If it was easy, everyone would do it.
I've struggled to reconcile my desire to create as an artist with my Christian beliefs. I finally decided I am a Christian Artist and will merge my beliefs with my art rather than choose between the two. No more toxic religious people allowed in my life to criticize the images I create as unbiblical. I believe my gift, my desire, my calling involves my art and crafts and to deny them is to deny God's calling on my life.
@@martaescobar7625 I agree with that, anything is art even a trash can is art, I call myself a painter too. There's a difference.
This video is so amazing right now. My 6 year old granddaughter stayed with me recently and was looking at my watercolor space. She said “MiMi! You are a real ARTIST!!” It made my heart so happy!
Wonderful!
Thanks for this. I tell people that "I hate art snobs." Mainly because I firmly believe everyone is an artist in some medium whether it be fine art, craft, textiles, culinary, literature, gardening, etc. I like to point people to Van Gogh's quotes, “I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it.” “If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.” I love making what is for me art and I hate when I hear people being discouraged because what is their art isn't someone else's cup of tea. Art is incredibly personal and individual. No one can really replicate someone else's art. IMHO
I have always been afraid to consider myself an artist. I would say I paint. But yes I really am an artist!
thank you for watching
I'm insulted if someone calls me an artist, I'm a painter.. because anything is art, even a trash can is art.
I have some friends that are painters, one of them can do a complete beautiful, original acrylic painting in about 30 minutes.
When I was younger, I made a lot of art and everyone would say I was an artist. I was at my most creative point in life. After high school, I was forced by my mom to go to medical school and, although I never stopped making some art, I stopped seeing myself as an artist. Now I’m trying to recover my skills and creativity to become a fashion designer (because sewing was also always part of my life). I love the tips in here and I’ll start calling myself an artist again! ❤

Parents are wankers
Growing up, everyone I met called me an artist. So I never doubted. However, after getting married I no longer had to pay the rent! Sadly, my urgency to create art through sketch and paint went totally dormant for decades, though I created useful items in textiles. And I collected art supplies never really used, because I felt I had too many responsibilities to take the time. Over time I realized my fine motor skills for fingering brush or pen were being lost due to hard work ranching. Recently I began painting with acrylic and watercolor again, having made space right in the front room next to the woodstove and am amazed at how quickly with just a few minutes a day and now at least an hour of practice in the early morning hours I am coming back to one of my favorite activities of my life. This video came into my feed, and I am so impressed with your philosophy that I am going to go through more of your videos to learn what I can from you. First off, your encouraging words for the public are real gems! I never would have thought to dress for the occasion, as I paint in whatever clothing I am wearing and spread paint in between my other daily chores as I can. Probably will not change my clothes as I get worse things on them than paint each day, HA! Thank you very much for the nice push I need to prioritize time for artwork.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks
That is a totally encouraging comment about practicing.😢
Thank you. Like the comments said those words are extremely powerful. Great blessing for today.
Ooh yes, I am an artist!!! I’ve always been an artist, in each medium I’ve created with. Being gourd pyrographer and instrument creator, jewelry artist, fiber dyeing, spinning, needle and wet felting artist…and after a very serious health crisis, I’m now an artist who paints in the medium of watercolor. Believe it or not, I’m learning to paint in my bed, for the most part! My daily situation is that, after 2 long year’s, I’ve been blessed with enough good moments in each day to immerse myself in the world of watercolor, and have spent months (just about an hour each day), creating w/an inexpensive set, brushes and paper. I hope someone reads this that is also feeling blocked by health and wanting to dive into creating art…but isn’t mobile enough to be doing it at the traditional “artist” level! Sorry for the long comment and thank you for this post!!!🧑🎨💜
Wow. I made a comment here about serendipity, then come upon yours! I have advancing immuno- and neurological disorders and my days are basically spent on the couch after an "exhausting" hour of painting, say - you get it. For starters, do yourself the kindness of treating the artist that you are to decent materials: ideally the best paper you can afford - that made the most important difference for me. I find painting on couch not great though and am constantly misplacing things, but the prospect of painting is my single most important reason for getting up in the morning.
I wish you the best in your art journey
@@KrisDeBruineStudio ❤
Right along with you, healing too 💕
@@Bearwithme560I am not mobility impaired but I use a rolling office chair with an ironing board in front of me set at a lower level. With all my necessaries right there on the ironing board. Super handy!
I have a room full of supplies, watched hundreds of tutorials, but still... Thanks for this video, it's truly encouraging. Blessings!
You're welcome
Yup. Me, too.
Gathering dust in a closet. Still.
Definitely NOT an "artist".
I really needed to hear this. I have wanted to be an artist my whole life. I started drawing portraits about 2 years ago and started painting about a year ago. I never wanted to call myself an artist because I thought people would think "who does she think she is?" But my son encouraged me to sell some paintings at our local Holiday Market last month and I actually sold a couple of my paintings! Those people don't even know how much they've changed my life just by supporting me like that. It was life changing. I've spent the last 20 years home schooling my kids and now that they're grown, I'm like "what do I do with myself now?" Now I am encouraged to keep going!
thanks for watching and sharing
If you do something creative, you ARE an artist PERIOD
thanks for watching
I would go further and say if you do anything you are an artist. Doesn’t need to be paint or pen. Putting an engine together is art, you cook your and artist, you organize things your an artist. Doesn’t matter what you do if you love it you’re an artist.
Watching TV is an art, it's called the art of watching TV.
If you make art, you are an artist. Doesn't matter who thinks it's good. To be a professional artist, that requires being paid for your art. BUT YES, if you create art you are an artist!
Thanks!!
Yup...if you put a bandaid on a cut...you are a doctor. if you add washer fluid to your car...you are a mechanic. (sigh)
@@treeman8823 Well, you need a degree from medical school to be a qualified doctor, and I gather you need specialised training to become a reputable car mechanic. An artist doesn't have any requirements of that nature. Yes, someone can do a three-year course at art college and get a degree, but it's not essential. Paul Gauguin never had any formal training. He immersed himself in art after giving up his respectable job as a stockbroker. It's perfectly fine for an artist to be self-taught. With doctors on the other hand, we naturally assume they're not self-taught when we go into hospital for an operation.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio you make me feel like Remy from ratatouille when he was watching Gusteau on the TV.
But instead of cooking, it’s drawing.
@@treeman8823 The point is there are objective real earth consequences when a doctor, mathemetician, mechanic etc mess up, an artist doesn't have those responsibilities, you're making a bad comparison and getting into a hissy fit.
wow. you just single handedly changed my life in 5 minutes, what i was never able to understand in the past 40 years i understood just now. this advice can not just be taken by artists, but by EVERYONE in every field and personality if transfered accordingly. truly thank you so so much for not just this art advice, but this lifechanging experience. ❤😊
Wow. Thanks
That last point really hit different. I've accumulated a monstrous amount of wonderful art supplies, carefully picked, but as a university student with some odd jobs on top of that, it's really difficult to make the time to paint. I work the odd jobs to buy the supplies and then barely use them.
I understand. I encourage you today....to PAINT!! :-)
How serendipitous. Yesterday afternoon, after two years of post- pandemic tutorials, l finished a painting that was my own concept, from beginning to end. It was just then that l heard my voice in my head out of the blue, saying "I'm an artist!".
As for sharing paintings done from demonstrations that have turned out well, it felt like cheating to share them, even while crediting the artist.
Thanks for this!
Wow. That's so cool. I love how UA-cam seems to read our mind somehow. 🤣
It’s not cheating when you are the one who painted the picture- even if you followed a tutorial.
It’s quite empowering, isn’t it, when you create something all in your own- congratulations on that huge milestone!
@@hannahcrumley3103 Thank you, Hannah. You warmed my heart.
THANK YOU! You don't need to sell your art or to have attended an art school to be an artist. I personally think that art includes even paintings or drawings made by children. There is no hierarchy between art pieces, they just are different and you can't say that some paintings are better than others. It's just a matter of criterias. If your main criteria is the technique you can say that some pictures are better than other one. I personally don't care about it because I have other criterias. I don't want to improve my technical skills because I want to express something else.
thanks for watching and sharing
A couple years ago, my daughter referred to herself as an "artist imaginationer", and I wish the whole world had that sense of self.
thank you for watching
Wow, this is the best inspirational advice I have heard. It reinforces the fact, that 'I am an artist ', thank you soon much!!! And I will paint every day, even if it's for only 5 to 10 minutes. Thank you and God Bless!
Sometimes when I want to make art but just can't, I smear paint around in my journal. Or glue paper into it. This helps keep me in touch with creating.
thanks for watching and sharing
Yes! I am an artist! I may have only been painting for less than two months, but I have made art, thus I am an artist, and I intend to keep BEING an artist. 😁
Also, I don't draw well, but I can sure paint! hahaha Just finished my favorite piece yet yesterday!
That is awesome!
I can confidently say yes, I am an artist. I spend time studying it, practicing, and sacrificed for it. I’m in no means good at it, but I know it is a journey. And when someone asks me, I admit exactly this.
thanks for watching and sharing
In less than a minute... Kris has shown you that you are indeed an artist!
thanks
Kris, spot on with today's video. Self-talk is so powerful, both positive and negative.
I agree. Thank you
I had a moment of introspection recently regarding being an artist.
A friend asked 'Why do you create?'
I replied 'I dont know, I just do. You don't ask why the leaves fall in the autumn, it just happens. For me it's the same.'
If you feel the need to create, you're an artist.
For me it's that simple.
Great insights. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so very much for this video You have answered all my questions and things that I have thought about with painting and drawing and things that I have done, like buying myself a set of colorful overalls to be my designated painting clothes also how I have been wanting to consider myself as an Artist I have always loved art, as a child I enjoyed drawing. I once found on the inside of a match pack an art contest, where the winner would be send to art school for free. I send away for the art booklet and when i completed it, I send it in. A few weeks later two men stopped by my house to let me know that I have won. My mom told them that I am only 13 years old and I had to be 18 to enter the contest, I was listening in from upstairs cause I thought I would get into trouble because I lied about my age, I was so disappointed that I could not go to art school. But I have always wanted to be an artist. Sorry for such a long post, I just wanted to share my story :) Everything you talked about in your video, it was like you were inside my head and knew me :)
This would make a GREAT chapter in your memoir 😉 it's an awesome story!
@@allieeverett9017 Thanks 😊

ive dreamt of being an artist since i was like 14 back in 2012, i drew 3h each day, everyday (and still do), but i always struggled to call myself an artist since i felt the quality of my work wasen't up to part to earn that title; so i called myself an aspiring artist instead (and to some extent i still kinda do) but now i feel ive earned it, not for the quality of my work but because of all the years of hard work ive put in.
:-)
Thank you for this! I am too quick to deny and defer but at the end of the day, I love making art, love learning and seeing what other creatives are up to. I just need to tell myself this, over and over.
I am an artist!! I'm writing this on my bathroom mirror so that I see it each and every day!
Great idea!!
It took me a long time to accept being called an artist by my clients. I was more focused on being a craftsman and being really good at that. I finally accepted being an artist when I started teaching at an art college without having an art degree.
:-)
Thanks for the encouragement Kris.🙏
I am an artist.👩🎨
Yes you are!! :-)
It's definitely hard to say the words out loud and really feel I have the right to say it. Great video, thankyou for this
thanks for watching and sharing
Someone actually asked me if I’m an artist a few days ago and I was kind of ashamed to claim being an artist because I see lots of people who call themselves artist and make beautiful art yet my drawings were never good enough from my own perspective. But my sister who was also with me then said yes she is an artist you make art that makes you an artist. And now I saw your video and it actually gives me much more self confidence about what I’m doing. Even tho it still feels hard to admit being an artist and not some who’s just trying to be one thank you very much for your video. It really makes young artists like myself really happy 🩷 I wish you a great day
You too!!!
Oh my gosh, Kris, I don't know you and I like your positive attitude. I want to believe that this question is aimed at children and special people. I was about to make a joke, but I won't be rude because you seem like a good person and an artist like me, even though my clothes are stained with paint, I don't have time for that. You're doing a fantastic job. Note: I am still practicing English for better understanding, this is a google translation.
thank you for watching
Thank you Kris, I needed to hear this. I haven’t been doing my art for a long time, you have inspired me to do it again ❤

Oh my god...thanks for those wonderful words....you made me to grab my art supplies and practice because I don't have skills and I love art supplies...I'm going to practice right now Thank you, thank you, thank you.😘

Thank you so much. I am aware I deny myself as an artist although others who see my work are amazed. I will validate myself now on and not seek validation from any one outside of me. Thank you for the gift of this message! ❤
Youre welcome

I am an artist! Thank you for your great advice.. the uniform idea I like and plan to implement!👍
Wonderful
As a child I had a mother who could pick up clay, crayons, pens, paint, anything... and turn it into stunning art. I soon thought that since I didn't seem to have that desire AND talent, it wasn't for me. I collected quirky art, I didn't produce it.
It wasn't until I experienced a string of traumatic events that left me with a concussive disorder & cptsd wheremy inner artist started screaming to get out. Now 80% of my time drives into art & it feels right.❤
Thanks for sharing your story
This was a good one, we have the same philosophy when it comes to our philosophy of Krsna Consciousness, in a nutshell, I have to remember my eternal relationship with Krsna as an eternal servant of His. And in this life I have to revive this.
Thanks for watching and sharing. I'm a Christian and believe we are made in God's image. He is a creator....so I believe we share in His Creative work. :-)

When asked will say, Yes, I’m an artist but no Van Gogh. Joking in a way but due to parents (telling me was a musician) & got to top of state but always felt/knew wanted to do my art (crayons first), colored pencils, acrylics & now learning watercolors online! Tyvm & best one actually paint 😊!

Thank you for making this video! This topic resonates deeply with me, and I struggle to call myself anything other than, maybe, a 'hobby-artist'. And yes, it is currently a hobby as I am still learning, but I would absolutely LOVE to confidently see myself as an artist, and take bigger leaps of faith in terms of promoting myself as an artist. It almost feels like I am not allowed to call myself that, that it is up to others to decide. Being proud of our achievements and our growth doesn't seem to come easy, but you are right, there's nothing wrong with calling ourselves 'artists'. I will have to practice that one by myself in front of the mirror😁 And I believe what you said, that with changing our perspective, we stop prohibiting us from going further.
Thanks once again, your words really hit the spot. ❤
You're welcome. Thanks for sharing
Kris, this is wonderful, thank you!

Agree with all of this! I've always been creative but it wasn't until I fell in love with watercolor that I started thinking myself as more artist over creative. After a work injury my watercolor is a form of therapy as well. The first time I owned it was walking into a local art center/gallery for first time and they asked if i was an artist. Lol a very proud "yes I am" flew out of my mouth before I realized it😅 had a great conversation there and walked out and said "Yep, I'm an artist now"...Great feeling and my art took a turn for the better, too!🥰

🎨Thanks so much, Kris. I really enjoy your positive attitude. I tend to say I am painting, but not that I am an artist. Like a say I run, but I am not a runner. But you are 100% right. I could say I am an artist, without saying I am a professional artist. I am an artist, even though I don't sell my art. Your videos always inspire me. After watching I got up and did a picture using my new and little understood soft pastels, just to have some fun. Also, I need to get myself a uniform. 😃

I can verify that what one believes about oneself does actually work. The example from my own life is unrelated to art, but it still illustrates the point you're making, Kris.
Up to and including 2004, I wanted to be a non-smoker. Usually when you try to quit, you get some gum, lozenges, or nicotine patches, and then you have to go through a 3-step program lasting 3 months, stepping down your intake each month. Or, at least, that's the program presented in all of these methods. (I suspect this is how they make their money.) The focus is on >quitting
