You hit on EVERYTHING as usual. I do have it on iOS, it does have a backup and it’s arguably my favorite way to play as I usually load it up anytime I’m flying. I want to say there is a way to sync controller support with say an Xbox controller but not 100% sure. Someone smarter than me (lots of people) can chime in and confirm on that. Regarding the PS1 sounds, it hurts my soul how they butchered the Lucavi transformations in later versions. The screams of the whaling demons should never be altered.
PS1 version for me is the is best version. Nostalgia being the most determining factor in that case. I still have my original game and saves. They definitely are a cherished classic from my childhood. Never played the PSP version so I can't really comment on it. Mobile on the other hand is where I mainly play now. It is especially great on long flights but it does eat the phone battery alive so keep it charging or bring a portable charger.
That is awesome I still wish I had my old save files and such. It's a great choice overall and if I liked the PS1 emulators more it would be my preference. And it really does eat the battery but nice tip for flights ✈️
Orlandu could rush forward to double kill the assassins turning into demons, yeah Masamune + Genji gear was like a badge of pride if you could steal it…why’d they change that 🤨
Very nice remake with all good points. I prefer ps1 because it was as you said "memorable." WOTL does have old and "proper" English but I don't remember any lines from it
I’m in agreement with you. Just two more things I think are worth adding. The WotL versions introduced Bathier which is one of the most OP characters. The other pro is for the IOS version, I like how the camera can be adjusted to show all parts of the map.
If you are going to mention Balthier lol gotta include Luso too can't exclude any other people lol. My hot take is that even though I liked the two additions, I still feel like they stole the thunder or spotlight from of the other characters. I like Balthier and Luso but not sure if they deserved a special scene over Mustadio or even more of Agrias and so on.
@@J7Jase I would have liked to see Mustadio and Agrias get an update instead of just the addition of characters. Plus we all know Cloud needed some major updates as well.
I liked the bonus battles for Reis and Beowulf I thought that was an excellent addition, instead of just her getting turned into a dragon you got more information as to why and you got the chance to get your revenge
My boy playing Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World from Chrono Cross. That song changed my life when I first heard it. Scars of Time OP was so great too. Growing up from SNES to PS1 and PS2...so many great gems. My top games are still Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, Xenogears and Wild Arms 1.
Thanks so much and glad to have people with great taste in music! Also fantastic choice in games! My faith in humanity has been restored. (Ever so slightly.)
I just finished getting all of my characters and monsters to 99 with all their Brave/ Faith set up perfectly so I was working towards Move 3 for my people. Once I unlocked Bard, I nearly crapped myself when I saw Fly was 5k JP. Such a huge cost for a skill that really doesn't have that much value compared to Move +3 at 1200. I ended up getting WOTL on the mobile version so I was really disappointed the multiplayer wasn't in it since I was excited to try them after seeing your videos on them. No idea why they would cut that, and I'm still salty they didn't do anything to buff Cloud when they made Balthier so busted.
Yeah that 5000 JP cost might as well get Move+ 3 and Teleport which are way better than Fly I feel lol. Its really unfortunately such a cool feature was cut. And yeah Cloud deserved to be way better!
I really need to replay PS1 version to see just how different it was.. I only played it 2, maybe 3 times back in the 90s/very early 2000s. It was cool, but I'm a big fat cheater so I always did the jp glitch.. When WOTL came out, I appreciated that it took that away from me! Made me learn the game more! Plus at the time I worked at place where I had nothing to do most of the time I was there, so I literally got paid to play games for 4-6 hours after getting my actually work all completed asap... I played War of The Lions A LOT! So, I consider it my favorite version but its only because, well, I played it 10x more and couldn't cheat :P I've replayed WOTL in recent years on my PC, I love the ability to uncap the framerate and had super turbo speed during fights! And I used a cheat to give myself 2x or 4x jp gain. But I never really knew how to do mods.. I would love to experience the PS1 version, Lion War, and whatever other story mods there are that have brand new fan made content. No idea where to start on that though.
That is one plus side to playing the game normally vs with glitches and cheats. You always to get to learn more about it for sure lol. I do have a video on how to install mods and etc. I feel its relatively simple just its somewhat intimidating at first though.
Hey man, I really appreciate your videos. I'm hoping you can help me out. I don't have childhood nostalgia for this. I was a grown adult by the time it came out and I just never got around to it. As a fan of the genre and mature, compelling stories, I've wanted to play it for years. When rumors started circulating of a remake, I bumped it off and played other games. I'm about ready to give up on that remake happening in any reasonable time frame. So, I'm trying to figure out which version and/or mods to play with for my first playthrough. I'd like to play on my Steam Deck. My primary goal is to experience the story and remove the cheese and much of the grinding the game is well known for. I'd like it to feel as close to a modern SRPG as possible for QoL features. I loved Triangle Strategy, for example, for how accessible (not easy) it was. It felt a lot like strategy mattered more than just using broken combos. I won't be following any guides and, realistically, my insane backlog won't allow for multiple playthroughs. I'd like a mod that tries primarily to accomplish this. A mod that is invisible and just makes the game feel more modern. I don't need one that makes it feel fresh vs vanilla since I don't have a vanilla experience. I've done a few hours into both versions of the game and found things about both scripts that I liked and disliked. I've avoided delving further into it because I've managed to avoid spoilers for 20 years and don't want to ruin that now. My concern for the scripts is that the PSX script will just have some poorly translated parts at key moments that take away from the story or that the WotL version will work so hard to couch the language that it'll do the same. I can't look up key moments of the script without spoiling myself so it's difficult to make a call. Lastly, I also wouldn't call the game sharp and easy to read in either version. I have old eyes. The iOS port seems to be the best in this regard, but precludes me from using mods and even though I have a large iPhone, the screen ends up way smaller than my Steam Deck. I've honestly considered buying an iPad just to play this dumb game, so consider that. I know the various emulators available for PSX and PSP may offer different quality fixes for this problem, so if there's an established "cleanest image" between the two, that's a factor as well. Again, thanks for your content. I promise I've spent dozens of hours trying to figure this out myself, watching your and other videos comparing but I'm at my wit's end. I appreciate the time and help!
Hi Thanks for your comment. Well to answer your question that can be a tough one but the mod with the most quality of life would have to be Remixed. It is a lot more forgiving. As for setting it up on the Steam Deck, I have no clue in all honesty sadly. Sadly the script for Remixed in the PS1 version so you will have things you like or dislike. If you want to go in with something that has quality of life and all that its Remixed. I usually don't recommend mods for first time players but that would have to be the one. Hope this helps
This game is a fine wine. PSX for me, will always reign in supremacy. Nice video! Your coverage was concise and witty. Thank you as always for the love you keep showing this treasure, OUR treasure... Final Fantasy Motha*!@#$ TACTICS!!!
The original. Hands down. The PSP wotl remaster was awfully optimized and had slowdown every action. The WOTL version itself changes so much with the wording and names. The weird medieval speaking parts sort of changed the whole feeling of the game. The original version is just perfection. It didn't need any changes.
Animals have no god! its Miluda's "!!!" that just gives me goosebumps. No words, just rage, pain and disgust. Algus and Miluda man, awesome characters.
I played tactics for the first time around 2010, i was in my early 20s. I can say definitively its not nostalgia that makes me prefer the original to the WOTL.
The original (PSX) is still my favorite, and FFT is easily my favorite FF title of the whole series. I must have 500+ hours logged between all of my runs, which can only be matched by my love for Dark Souls (about the same), Warframe (2200+ hrs), and League of Legends (~3000 wins when I quit 8 years ago, so very likely ~2500 hrs) I have not yet attempted to emulate it FFT, though I do have the software already on my PC--my PSOne (with the small screen attached) still works! I also own the PSP version, though the sound quality and slowdown kept me from playing that one anywhere near as in-depth as on PSX. I may have to give the emulated WotL version a try. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video, thank you for this! My most played and cherished one is the PSX version, since I've played it countless hours in my childhood. But I have also loved the PSP one for its portability and extra content. Mobile I haven't played, yet it's been looking good being high-res and stuff. Which brings me to the question: Does anyone know where to get character portraits like the one I'm using, just in higher quality/resolution?
Heh, that was my idea as well as some sort of last resort. Still a bit strange that rarely image galleries from the mobile version are around. Or my Google skills are just lacking ;)@@J7Jase
Tbh, I think the PSP port is the best version in terms of presentation, localization, and content. Easy to patch and emulate. Yeah, it has sound effect problems, but tbh I think the PlayStation has as many faults as the PSP version, just in other places (localization problems, bugs, and some real lackluster endgame aside from the Deep Dungeon). Luckily, I'm just going with the PSX version with the LWotL patch for the perfect happy medium. :0
I think I liked the PSP version just for all the added features. If they had kept the names and the dialogue for spells from the psx version then I think the PSP one would be the best. I still wish I had friends back during the PSP that would have tried this game to play the rendezvous missions. Might have to check out the emulator if it really is that easy for multiplayer.
Multiplayer is local only. There are other ways to bridge a connection online, but it's generally much easier to play one of the Lion War mods, which bring them to the PSX version as single-player content.
Yeah the PS1 names and all that were great. Although there were some awkward things about it lol but I also remember it way more. I use it on my two different PCs for play.
Ps1 version was never released in the uk, glad I got it as a chipped copy tho so I could play it as it’s one of my fave games ever, I bought war of the lions once it came out over here on psp that would’ve been a lot of peoples first time playing it in the uk. I play war of the lions more as it’s portable. But I actually prefer the old cut scenes lol
@@J7Jase yeah we used to get really left out when it came to jrpgs only recently got to play chrono cross when they released the remaster. We’ve never got xenogears either
I always thought it strange that they did not make a real PC version for this game. I played on PS1 for many years, and also played on PC ported. One of the best turn-based combat games ever.
I find it odd too just not having a PC release but emulation has so much quality of life features. If I recall, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles also didn't get a PC release right? But WOTL was already sort of a remaster even though it was ported to mobile devices.
For me personally, I'll always love the original PS1 version the most...I just wish the new characters introduced in the PSP version were in the 1st 😆.
It may be nostalgia, I don't know. It is hard to tell. But the most off-putting thing about WOTL is the re-translation. It really had a huge effect on my playthrough of it.
I don't blame you even the sound effects, and having characters and abilities renamed. Also the slowdown or the sped up animations. Its feeling don't quite hit the same as the PS1
This is my favorite game of all time. I still feel that the original for PS1 is the definitive version because the slowdown of the PSP version is too much for someone who knows the game so well. I literally can't even with the slowdown. I also prefer the naming in the original. Vormav sounds like a badass imposing villain. Folmarv on the other hand sounds like a wet fart.
There are ways to fix it so it isn't as slow anymore. But at the same time even though I've played the first version I still rather play WOTL than other games even if there is a slowdown. Much rather play this than nearly all other games. And yeah most of the PS1 names were better.
I prefer the PSP version too because it's better overall. But with Lions War mod at this point everyone should play both. I don't see myself playing on Android. You forgot to mention that the slowdown was a way to deal with the UMD reader in the PSP, because the battle animations were crashing the game and/or making the handheld stop reading the disk at normal speed. This was the only way to quickly fix the problem before release, also a really bad decision. Without Slowdown Fix mod the game speed it's obnoxious. To conclude yes, PPSSPP it's a great emulator and I highly recommend it. But this game it's one of the best points to buy and hack an used PSP or PSVita aside from Ps1 emulation like I do. Such an experience when I was working abroad and can carry this free-time killer everywhere. Tactics League it's another great variant to play online, I kinda like it but they are balancing some stuff of the original game that for some reason is not rooting at all with me. Anyways I will follow and support it anyways!
@denammorne8359 I will not start an argument but if you compare running an unofficial eboot in a hacked console with a modified original release and remaster for the PSP that boots from an UMD reader, something it's happening with your criteria. As far I'm concerned all points to overheating, UMD limitations and crashes. In fact is not the first time that this scenario happened with a PSP game. Do you think they made the game slower for no reason or evil intentions? Come on xD
I've heard about that issue but if I recall one of the modders for FFT said that fixing the slowdown even for the PSP was a relatively simple task that wouldn't compromise the game. My memory could be a little faulty as I get tons of comments and read a lot of Discord general chat and messages. It was slow and quite a few of the names and sounds took a hit but I just love how it plays out on Emulator. The PSP was a great system sadly technology really doesn't age well and its battery life is a bit on the weaker side. But on the plus side its a good balance of real life and game time lol
@@J7Jase Well, I'm not surprised that a modder will handle the problem without compromising gameplay and even improving it. I play a lot of romhacks and some of them are indeed better than the original game. You can't compare a company willing to sell something with an individual or group of individuals pushed only by dedication and enthusiasm but not for money. Modders are people to take seriously as devs. About PSP and consoles, it depends. If you're into the hobby expect to mod, fix and rescue consoles. I'm not a collector but along the years I got what my friends didn't want to take care so at the end I'm spending specific days with a screwdriver and solder iron. Also there are plenty of 3rd party brands that last much more than original batteries and it doesn't require any modification. Yes, PPSSPP it's an amazing emulator. Of course I will not judge someone that prefers this method. And is not only related to PC, they are working their asses hard to make it work in different platforms, handhelds and hacked consoles. Plus the multiplayer works flawless. There is no better emulator at today!
Same here man. It was my introduction to the game and it paved the way so gotta love and show respect. I have a similar story with that one lol. I actually had the setup to beat him but he kept blocking my attacks lol
The Lion Wars mod for the PS1 version is fantastic. If u do not care for the new items go for this mod! I mod the psp version because I like Rapha and Marach lol I bought the Android version but never play it lol. Because there is no cloud save function and I tend to change my phone every 2-3 years so that is a big let down.
I too have played the PS 1 version and the PSP version.. For me, I loved being able to steal Elmdor's Genji gear, which they removed in the PSP. While that was a letdown, they put BALTHIER in the game!! I love BALTHIER.. I just wish they'd put Fran in as well.. I will never play anything as extensive as Tactics on a mobile phone.. You just know it isn't going to equal the classics..😣
Both versions are really good. I still need to get used to the mobile touch screen but because I'm on android I can't use cloud saves so its just emulation on PC for me lol
I am currently playing wotl on ppsspp but i got the community slow down patch so i can play without the annoying slowdown. This is the best version to play in these days imo.
The emulator is superior and great. But to really make the most out of WOTL is for the extra features like Rendezvous for it to really outshine the other versions
Mustadio was my favorite, until they added Balthier in War of the Lions. As far as jobs, I always set calculator/arithmetics as my secondary skill on Ramza.
I agree no controller on mobile version is the deal breaker. I’ve Been leaving that review on the app store for ages and they still haven’t done it. But What about using something like the Razer Kishi v2 pro with the android version. It has a virtual controller where you can map a controller to screen gestures. To use the controller with touch screen mobile games that don’t support controllers. Or i imagine bluestacks the android emulator can maybe do that too. I used to do the same thing with an nvidia shield handheld, it had a similar feature. Its not aways possible to completely map everything perfectly , some touch gestures were still required on occasion . But it kinda worked. My shield handheld battery exploded. but the shield tablet could do it too if you had the shield controller. Its kind of this old niche android gaming device that nvidia made.
Thank goodness I played the PSX and PSP versions years ago.I haven't played the mobile/ipad versions yet. The only thing I didn't like about the PSP version was the slowdowns lol.
I haven’t played any mods. The slowdown was enough for me to not finish the psp version. The mobile version I played like halfway through before I got annoyed. PS1 was my favorite version.
@@J7Jase never had a psp unfortunately. Maybe ill emulate that one one day. I heard balthier was in one of them but he was pretty underwhelming in ff12 imo. Still gotta finish the zodiac age version, but I prefer the ps2 liscenses. I know its more generic but I just want basic spells on everyone all the time.
The obvious answer is that the PSone version is superior because it has confirm mapped to the O button. Okay, okay, jokes aside I've accidentally cancelled out of menus so many times on the PSP version. My brain is just hardwired to have O as confirm for Tactics. I do love the new guest characters (even though it makes a timeline for Ivalice make zero sense xD) and the new cutscenes, but I feel like the PSP localization is a wee bit overcooked and makes it kind of hard for me, personally, to get as engaged with the game. Not to mention the parts you mentioned about the ability names being exponentially less cool. Also, why did they remove the attack quotes? Those were so iconic to the game! I do hope FFT gets a proper remaster for modern platforms, hopefully it can be a sort of hybrid version that has the best of the PSone and PSP
It took me a while to get used to the circle and x button as well. Last I checked the Luso and Balthier thing was more of a cameo appearance thing not an attempt to tie all the games together. But even though the dialogue at times was a bit over the top, the multiplayer and the side content was really great.
@@J7Jase I sadly never got to try any of the multiplayer content. I do appreciate all the QoL additions for sure. And ye, I knew Luso and Balthier were more of a "don't overthink this, it's just a fun cameo" but that still didn't stop younger me from... well, overthinking it xD
I feel you can hack the PSP version to make it just as great as the PS1 version: translations and other improvement patches, spell quote restoration, slowdown fix as you mentioned, the unstretch patch, and technically even a soundtrack fix by using the official CD soundtrack for that sweet, sweet PS1 reverb... theoretically anyway. Music replacement in PSP games is the hackiest of all hacks and I've never done it personally. I bet properly looping tracks will take some effort as well (i.e. it's probably not a drag & drop replacement). Still, the hacks for the PS1 version are even cooler. You got your improvement patches, save data editors like FFTastic, and GameShark codes that let the 2P play as the computer! Too bad I don't know anyone who wants to play FFT with me. I don't know of equivalent hacks for the Japanese PS1 version, but you can sidestep the issue of translation entirely with it, and I seem to remember some stuff that's only in the JP version...
You make some great points. The PSP version seems more difficult idk the reasons why exactly but you bring up some good points. I do think there are people trying to work around the sound thing. But only time will tell. However, I still like the PPSSPP emulator better, just feels so smooth and great. Thanks again!
Once you learn that the black area on both sides can be used as a controller, you'll love the android version more. I didn't like how time consuming tapping the commands on the main interface was, so I imagined using the sides. To my surprise, it works! There's also the the swipe commands- easy back command, easy screenshots, seemless camera rotation. That's all I know. They should update it to add skip on all events. And maybe add Mont or Sterne or anyone from WotV, maybe Ashley Riot too. Hahahaha` Cheers!
If you prefer that version great. But I think a lot of people growing up do prefer and like the controller too. But the fact that its mobile is a huge plus for sure and the new sprite and etc. Thanks for your comment
Why is this game so difficult? Sure it is a great game, but I feel like the only way to make the game fair odds, would be to cheat somehow. The enemies can dish out 60 to 90 points damage. That isn't including the counter attacks. Even though I have master chemists with hi potion ability, I still can not purchase them and use them. All my pc receive more damage than I can heal them with. The potion only offers 30 points. Then the enemy attacks with 60+ damage. I really like this game, but it takes a lot of patience. Too much. Think of something else you could be doing with your time. Like cooking a delicious meal or something. I only play these games because I don't have a real lifestyle. Even if I was to finish a game this difficult, who would be impressed by it? No one and I ended up wasting effort and time. Happy gaming, this game just takes up too much time. Nice presentation
It can be hard for sure especially for first time players. The mechanics and damage formulas are rather odd so I can see your point. But I don't play that many games and I love FFT a lot so I understand it quite a bit. It is all about trial and error, practice and looking things up. Hope that will help you
Make sure you get JP up ASAP and also look up the astro signs as you get extra damage if they match. Lastly, DON"T level up Ramza fast as some enemies scale with his level.
I think the best version of FFT would be the PS1 with the additions of the PSP. I would love to play the PS1 version with the Shakespearian dialogue because that style gave so much more setting to the game that it highlighted the world better than the PS1 localization. I say this because I love Shakespeare. To make it even better, it could keep the skill names and the chants from the PS1. I am not sure if it has mods like that.
DuckStation now has Nintendo Switch port. Your Switch does need to be jailbroken, which mine is anyway. So now I can bring FFT with me anywhere I go or dock it to the monitor when I'm home. I like the capabilities of Duckstation more than the psp emulators. So ps1 version for me
Duckstation is a perfect ps1 emulator. Also, you didn't mention the stretched screen on the psp version. Perhaps you don't care, since the entire video is stretched.
@@NesrocksGamingVideos lol "I don't care." Yeah okay bud. I've helped make FFT mods a lot more popular. Made videos that helped make FFT more popular, had fan art commissioned, and replied back to thousands of people and actually care about my subscribers lol.
@@J7Jase I meant care that the psp version is stretched. Didn't mean as an attack on you, many people don't care about that kind of stuff. It was just odd that you didn't mention it since many consider that a pretty substantial difference and the video is about the version differences.
@@NesrocksGamingVideos It doesn't even look bad? I don't even see that many people even complaining about it? People play this on emulators nowdays. I've had a good share of people say they love the way the graphics look or how my setup is on emulator. And this is from my own personal experience actually running an FFT channel.
@@J7Jase So maybe that's because you're used to the stretched graphics from playing the psp version a lot. They released it that way for a reason, even the devs thought it was more important to stretch it than to have black bars. A lot of people abhorre distorted graphics though, something to keep in mind. Not an accident that someone made the unstretch mod for the psp version.
@@NesrocksGamingVideos I actually started on the PSX. Why I know the old names of abilities and the sound differences. It doesn't even look that bad or distorted in my personal opinion and a good majority of the people who watch my channel say the same thing. It is like people in the year 2024 saying Advent Children graphics look bad. Man people love to complain about everything little thing lol.
I dont really hooked with shakespearean WOTL, even the character name, skill title, etc. Yes WOTL has new class and some additional playable character, but i cannot lie i still prefer original ones, even i can messing around with PAR/Gameshark to get Wiegraf, Rofel, Kletian, Olan, Dycedarg in my parties. With certain codes, Ramza has a chance to get two devastating sword skill (Holy Sword and Divine Sword) so he can par equally with Orlandu singlehandedly defeating enemies every battle. In other hand accesing boss skill set also possible, like Dimension Magic (Hashmalum/Regulator) and strongest summon skill called Phantom (Elidibis/Serpentarius).
Nothing wrong with that to be honest. I mean WOTL has those moments of old English but at the same time there are lines where they speak English normally. Both versions are great and I highlight pros and cons of each. At the end of the day FFT is just great
@@J7Jase yeah nothin wrong with it, PSP version has own unique way to expand the game, its good but unfortunately im not english person, i really hard to understand about kind that old british literary style...
I own the android version and I couldn't play because as a adult male I find the UI too small to use by fingertip controls, they definitely need to had a joypad on the screen like handheld games usually does.
Duckstation. All of these things checked. However, people were having mixed results when I told him these settings. GPU Renderer Fullscreen Resolution Borderless Fullscreen Threated Presentation Enable Vsync Aspect Ratio 4:3
@@J7JaseMight be an older version of Duckstation as latest release some of the settings have changed. These are pretty basic options listed, however the "Renderer" is DX11/DX12/Vulkan, etc on top of selecting the GPU. I would imaging the internal rendering options are what play a larger part in how this looks, for example the scaling or texture filtering, which play a larger part than the renderer engine.
Just an FYI: the iOS version has iCloud saves which, unlike Android, lets you save and load on multiple devices (or if you buy a new iPhone). But yeah personally PS1 version was my favorite 😂 They also have this super weird version on GBA where they changed Ramza’s name to Marche and Delita to Montblanc…such a weird version of FFT 😵💫
Well, I saw the title and after watching the video I will give my humble opinion on just 1 point about the two versions. I played FFT when it was released, and its PSP version too (I didn't like it much), and what surprised me was the impeccable quality of the sound of the soundtrack and of the BATTLES especially (when you do a sword, stab, some sacred blow and kill the enemy), this point I HATED in the PSP version, it sounds like bells are horrible, in the PSX version the quality of the fight sounds is much better! I hope that if one day they make a "new remaster" that they use the PSX audio quality version. in my opinion the best version is PSX, best quality sound!
Yes thanks for the comment. I did do a brief sound comparison in the video but yeah the PSX has infinitely better sounds I mention this quite a few times in my other videos as well. Lucavi etc. and so on.
I still don't understand why they let the psp version release with the spell slowdowns and delayed spell sfx? I just hope that if the supposed remake of FFT is real that it doesnt have any of those problems or the hacks that they used in the mobile ver to speedup the spells. I mean, cmon guys!
Yeah nothing ever beats the PSX sound and such. I mean on a PSP if you bought the PSX port on it, it had no issues and problems as well lol. So hopefully Square is taking notes on that. I still love the versions they put out but gotta have that nostalgia factor lol
All the same pretty much. WOTL has a few more end game side quests and like four more scenes but it connects the story better. Hope that helps and thank you
The newer versions _might_ be better, but I never got into any of them as much as I did the original. I'll say PS1 (though I'm not a fan of seeing it's 4:3 resolution unnaturally stretched in this video.)
I don't think I prefer one over the other. Maybe the PSP version has a slight edge for me. I don't care about Balthier, I don't use him or even recruit him anymore, but I liked the new adherences to the story, the new missions, the overhaul to Meliadoul, etc. But I don't like the overhauled dialogue, neither the slowdown of animations. One has something the one other lacks. The Lion War mod could have been the perfect version for me. But again, I didn't like that Meliadoul is notboverhauled in that version, neither I cannot mess with equipment and classes of the guest characters (tho that one is just a nitpick).
You make a lot of great points. Lately I'm mostly playing the PSP WOTL because I feel the emulator is the best and its just so smooth. The Lion War is great but yeah messing with guests would have been a nice thing.
I think the PSP version of job stat growth is based on the Japanese PS1. The English PS1 version made it easier. Also, only the English PS1 allows you to steal from Elmdore.
@@J7Jase It's worth it to try. Some stuffs were cut out overseas. There were several interactive sound novels earned from errands which can be read from Chronicle just like Germonique scriptures. They were never translated, even in WOTL. The songs from the novels can be listened in the hidden sound test only in the Japanese PS1, but made available in the localized PSP, including dummied out tracks. There may be a mod having translated novels.
I couldn't even get through War of the Lions. Some of the sound was just way too bad for me. Having played the PS1 version so many times, the sounds are a huge part of the experience for me.
Psp version would have been the definitive version had it not been for the frame drops on almost every damn spell. There was a patch for it you could apply manually.... But come on.
I think the PSP War Of The Lions version was better, had more characters, bonus battles, they expanded on certain characters back stories added a dark knight class just think it was expanded and made better
@@J7Jase Nice first i play fft in emulator psx, not fft wotl when i see your video about fft wotl on mobile i play from the start just to play where you can recruit luso😆
I hate how square hasn't ported this gamelike they did with final fantasy 1 to 6 and tactics ogre? Like why? Why can't they preserve their games? It cannot be that hard
Who knows exactly or why. I tried tweeting Yasumi Matsuno stuff about FFT (not asking about remakes or remasters, just love and appreciation for his creation.) But sadly, no reply. So maybe sadly he just isn't interested in a project like that again :(
Can anyone recommend me mods and where to get them? I never played this so i want to have the best experience possible. I got interested in this after hearing so many ppl talk about how great the game is and after playing the Zodiac Brave Story in FFXIV
Wotl is better simply because the translation is 100x better . The old English fits the setting better and sounds much more mature for the time period and themes the game is going for.
Thanks so much. And oh yeah the sounds were just on another level for the PS1. Cannot beat that.
Thr glitch dupe weapon is the best in ps1 but the new stuff added after the ps1 is amazing
0:31 FFT PS1/Original Version
4:14 FFT PSP Version
7:55 FFT Mobile Version
Thanks! This means I know you watched the whole video lol
"I am Velius, the Devil" left a much more significant impact on me than "The Gigas Belias have I been named."
Agreed a lot of the original names just hit home honestly
He sounds extremely posh in the updated version for sure lmao
Velius, the great stonewall
PS1 version for me is the is best version. Nostalgia being the most determining factor in that case. I still have my original game and saves. They definitely are a cherished classic from my childhood. Never played the PSP version so I can't really comment on it. Mobile on the other hand is where I mainly play now. It is especially great on long flights but it does eat the phone battery alive so keep it charging or bring a portable charger.
That is awesome I still wish I had my old save files and such. It's a great choice overall and if I liked the PS1 emulators more it would be my preference. And it really does eat the battery but nice tip for flights ✈️
The PSP version is the best without a doubt, it has very beautiful cinematics as well as new jobs
Way back, on PS1, I managed to steal the Genji set, Agrias with a thief skill set and equipped with Ribbon can ignore the zombie effect.
Vampire and everything the Assassins can do its a good one for sure
Orlandu could rush forward to double kill the assassins turning into demons, yeah Masamune + Genji gear was like a badge of pride if you could steal it…why’d they change that 🤨
Very nice remake with all good points. I prefer ps1 because it was as you said "memorable." WOTL does have old and "proper" English but I don't remember any lines from it
Yeah even the ability names and so on. The PS1 it just stood out more.
Lay down your keyboard or d*e clutching them. None will mourn your typing.
Dispelna being called Deathspell 2 is just weird but cool
The Ps1 version was my childhood.
Solid game and choice growing up 👍
Agreed@@J7Jase
The best version is the friends we made along the way.
I see what you mean very nice 👍With that being said all the versions definitely brought a lot of us together which is great 👍
Also itn Android/iOS version, a Character who dies early on comes back and you have to fight them again. It was a cool surprise.
Argath that applies to War of the Lions. You really aren't spoiling much and it's common knowledge at this point
Happened in ps1 also
I’m in agreement with you.
Con Rad -> Ladd like wtf
@@J7Jase I would have liked to see Mustadio and Agrias get an update instead of just the addition of characters. Plus we all know Cloud needed some major updates as well.
I liked the bonus battles for Reis and Beowulf I thought that was an excellent addition, instead of just her getting turned into a dragon you got more information as to why and you got the chance to get your revenge
Meliodual doesnt exist in fft ps1, her moves dont work on monsters or unarmed.
They do in psp, giving you another sword skill+chantage ribbon user.
Why Balthier and not Fran like wtf
I really need to replay PS1 version to see just how different it was.. I only played it 2, maybe 3 times back in the 90s/very early 2000s. It was cool, but I'm a big fat cheater so I always did the jp glitch.. When WOTL came out, I appreciated that it took that away from me! Made me learn the game more! Plus at the time I worked at place where I had nothing to do most of the time I was there, so I literally got paid to play games for 4-6 hours after getting my actually work all completed asap... I played War of The Lions A LOT! So, I consider it my favorite version but its only because, well, I played it 10x more and couldn't cheat :P
I've replayed WOTL in recent years on my PC, I love the ability to uncap the framerate and had super turbo speed during fights!
I just LOVED getting hit with Shadow Stitch. I want my like.
I'll give you a like thumbs up and a heart !
Thank you thank you. I just love FFT and I'm glad there are quite a few people here to join along in loving it!
The original. Hands down. The PSP wotl remaster was awfully optimized and had slowdown every action. The WOTL version itself changes so much with the wording and names. The weird medieval speaking parts sort of changed the whole feeling of the game. The original version is just perfection. It didn't need any changes.
The added content in WOTL was really nice with multiplayer and so on but I can totally relate to you there.
That's why the psp wotl fan made rom hack is best
Its a crime that they havent remaster this
War of the Lions was technically speaking. So if anything if they do another remaster it will be a remaster of a remaster.
Oh don't worry. There could be a woke remaster.
Animals have no god! its Miluda's "!!!" that just gives me goosebumps. No words, just rage, pain and disgust. Algus and Miluda man, awesome characters.
The OG words man. Just hit home different, nearly forgot about that one. 5 Stars g
I played tactics for the first time around 2010, i was in my early 20s. I can say definitively its not nostalgia that makes me prefer the original to the WOTL.
Hey I respect that. Its definitely got its charm for sure
The original (PSX) is still my favorite, and FFT is easily my favorite FF title of the whole series. I must have 500+ hours logged between all of my runs, which can only be matched by my love for Dark Souls (about the same), Warframe (2200+ hrs), and League of Legends (~3000 wins when I quit 8 years ago, so very likely ~2500 hrs)
I have not yet attempted to emulate it FFT, though I do have the software already on my PC--my PSOne (with the small screen attached) still works! I also own the PSP version, though the sound quality and slowdown kept me from playing that one anywhere near as in-depth as on PSX.
I may have to give the emulated WotL version a try. Thanks for sharing.
All good choices 👍 honestly id recommend Emulation if you are ever in the mood. So much quality of life I say.
Thanks for watching and the comment.
That I'm not sure. I was thinking just screenshot the portraits and upscale them with a photo editor.
Yeah that's fair. I made FFT mods more popular in recent times so I'm not sure what the last comment was trying to insinuate
So true ,...
Did they ever patch the PsP version where the skills were slowed down when used?
@@detrickz1295 A fan patch for this has been available for over a decade.
Ps1 the slow down was perfect. And the mods for it are the best…
Solid choice agreed 👍
Ps1 version was never released in the uk, glad I got it as a chipped copy tho so I could play it as it’s one of my fave games ever, I bought war of the lions once it came out over here on psp that would’ve been a lot of peoples first time playing it in the uk. I play war of the lions more as it’s portable. But I actually prefer the old cut scenes lol
Really even the EU version never made it? I'm surprised.
Hey the old scenes are great too I say lol all preference at the end of the day
@@J7Jase yeah we used to get really left out when it came to jrpgs only recently got to play chrono cross when they released the remaster.
That's what mods are for!
I don't blame you but I think Nyzer pointed something out lol
Just don't ask any questions about Luso lol. Granted over half the people I've seen didn't play FFTA2 though from what I've seen lol
Great video! It covers just about everything.
Thanks so much. I just love FFT and gotta point out what each version has.
"Time has come...crash down on the wicked! Meteor!"
"Absorb power in the sky and strike! Lightning Stab!"
these are my reasons.
Perfectly good reasons!
I have a special place for the ps1 version in my heart. Having to figure out the game with no Internet help. Weigraf was a pain the first time.
I mod the psp version because I like Rapha and Marach lol
I bought the Android version but never play it lol. Because there is no cloud save function and I tend to change my phone every 2-3 years so that is a big let down.
Good choices I dig it 👍I only got so far on my mobile version as you can tell by the footage lol
Nothing wrong with that
I agree no controller on mobile version is the deal breaker.
That I did not know. From what I know bluestacks does not have controller support as well sadly.
I just started the iOS ver and was so confused with the renaming of alot of moves.
For PS1 veterans I agree it will definitely throw you off and also the sounds of the abilities and etc.
Thank goodness I played the PSX and PSP versions years ago.I haven't played the mobile/ipad versions yet. The only thing I didn't like about the PSP version was the slowdowns lol.
Good stuff and I agree with you there!
I love the Chrono cross music in the video ❤
Thanks so much and glad you noticed!
Thanks Jase
Thank you 👍
I haven’t played any mods. The slowdown was enough for me to not finish the psp version. The mobile version I played like halfway through before I got annoyed. PS1 was my favorite version.
The ps1 was always a fan favorite 👍
Need this on PS4 and PS5 and Nintendo switch
True but in the mean time emulate it on your PC for more or less the same experience with quality of life
I have played and beat all 3 but I only own the original copy and phone version
Very nice glad you truly are showing FFT some love 👍
Emulating vanilla on my phone, does well. I've never even played the remakes or sequals though.
FFTA games I wouldn't really consider sequels or related to be honest. It doesn't really connect the two.
WOTL is really good for the most part though
I need to replay fft again for the extra content of the psp version. I finished the original ton of times, but we can never get "enough" fft
Very nice comment that sums it up perfectly !
I don’t think you can understate just how bad the spell slowdown is when unpatched on the PSP/PS Vita.
Compared to the PS1 version yes but I still rather wait for the slowdown and play FFT than play most other games.
Hahahaha`
Cheers!
If you prefer that version great. But I think a lot of people growing up do prefer and like the controller too.
But the fact that its mobile is a huge plus for sure and the new sprite and etc.
Thanks for your comment
Heartbreaking Square doesn't rerelease this on Steam, Switch, PS4/PS5. One of the best stories I've seen in a video game
Same however with a backed up UMD, you can play it right now through emulation
@@xBlitzerx random battles and some enemies scale with the highest level person in the roster. Not just Ramza
The closest thing I can think of is The Lion War of the Lions mod for PSX .
"Blame yourself, or god." That line hits hard.
@@iceee420 agreed 👍💯
Ps1 all the way
I respect that choice its just more memorable and paved the way for the other versions.
Ps1 is the best
You're damn right
The sound on the psp just kills that version for me. Ps1 sounds like a beautiful symphony compared to it
I love the new stuff in lions but the glitch in ps1 for infinite items is the best
Multiplayer is what always decided it for me. I love the iPad graphics, but.... multiplayer is too fun to pass up.
Very nice choice and agreed 👍
Playing journey of the five at the moment it's brilliant
Good stuff 👍👍
DuckStation now has Nintendo Switch port. Your Switch does need to be jailbroken, which mine is anyway. So now I can bring FFT with me anywhere I go or dock it to the monitor when I'm home. I like the capabilities of Duckstation more than the psp emulators. So ps1 version for me
that I don't know as I don't have a Nintendo Switch. But that is a cool feature
Opening with that chrono cross music I see
Yes I love the music for that game and good ears 👍
War of the Lions settles a bit more with Ivalice aesthetic for me. Mobile main
I don't play games on my phone anymore but yeah WOTL is fantastic
The ability quotes ALONE make the PSX version supreme.
That is a solid reason for sure
Love the chrono cross music. 😊
Thanks so much. Great ears too 👍
I dont really hooked with shakespearean WOTL, even the character name, skill title, etc.
Honestly don't blame you on that at all man! I agree
Here because I wished they remastered or remake this game already.
War of the Lions was technically a remaster
@ well damn..I totally meant just remake. Yeah.
Mmmmm. Chrono Cross music in an FFT video. Somehow, I'm not mad at all.
👍
I would really like to know the emulator and settings used to make the PS1 version look as good as it does here.
Duckstation. All of these things checked. However, people were having mixed results when I told him these settings.
GPU Renderer
Fullscreen Resolution
Borderless Fullscreen
Threated Presentation
Enable Vsync
Aspect Ratio 4:3
@@J7JaseMight be an older version of Duckstation as latest release some of the settings have changed.
These are pretty basic options listed, however the "Renderer" is DX11/DX12/Vulkan, etc on top of selecting the GPU. I would imaging the internal rendering options are what play a larger part in how this looks, for example the scaling or texture filtering, which play a larger part than the renderer engine.
Just an FYI: the iOS version has iCloud saves which, unlike Android, lets you save and load on multiple devices (or if you buy a new iPhone). But yeah personally PS1 version was my favorite 😂
They also have this super weird version on GBA where they changed Ramza’s name to Marche and Delita to Montblanc…such a weird version of FFT 😵💫
Thank you thank you 👍I don't have an iphone so that is a huge help.
Lol lol I think I played that one before
WotL with the QoL and slowdown mods installed is easily the best version.
It's a solid choice for sure
@2:17 how in the heck is Ramza using Night Sword against Wiegraf that early game?
That is a clip from me playing The Lion War Mod. It's a mod for the PS1.
Lucavi etc. and so on.
Oh yeah the stoneshooter lol. That was definitely an experience first time getting and using. Good times with the game
Ps1 is the best, because wotl has strange dialogue.
I respect that good choice 👍
psp has a hack version that fixes slow issues, i think this is the best version
@@mephistophelesknivez I've made quite a few videos showing people how to install mods and guides. Thanks though
May i ask if the version in psp , psx and android are somewhat different ? Like the story progress?
All the same pretty much. WOTL has a few more end game side quests and like four more scenes but it connects the story better.
Hope that helps and thank you
@@J7Jase thank you.
What about playing PS1 on a steam deck handheld that’s gotta be possible some how right. With an emulator? That might just be Peak FFT
I never tried that as I don't have a Steam deck. But PC emulation is probably best.
The newer versions _might_ be better, but I never got into any of them as much as I did the original. I'll say PS1 (though I'm not a fan of seeing it's 4:3 resolution unnaturally stretched in this video.)
Whatever version you prefer is honestly fine and it's the emulator.
I've never played the Japanese version myself I heard there are some differences but I'd love to show some gameplay with real video clips
Luso makes WotL the clear winner.
glad to see some Luso lovers!
I couldn't even get through War of the Lions. Some of the sound was just way too bad for me. Having played the PS1 version so many times, the sounds are a huge part of the experience for me.
No worries at all I can understand it I just love FFT regardless so I will play it over most games lol
I want to play these versions sometime too. I have only played the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on Gameboy Advance lol.
This is the version and game that paved the way so I recommend it
Psp version would have been the definitive version had it not been for the frame drops on almost every damn spell. There was a patch for it you could apply manually.... But come on.
Yeah I kinda don't blame you on that tbh
I love PS1 But I Have It on Green Lion GB PRO gaming Console But I don't know how to Download the Mods
Idk how to set up mods on consoles.
I only have guides for PC emulation
Why is chrono cross music being played in the back ground lol
Because I'm my own boss like that lol
I think the PSP War Of The Lions version was better, had more characters, bonus battles, they expanded on certain characters back stories added a dark knight class just think it was expanded and made better
I play it more nowadays because the emulator is just superior and the multiplayer options as well is great. So I totally agree with you
What ps1 emulator would you recommend?
This day and age Duckstation
As a child never had a ps1and today I started playing it using duckstation emulator (ryzen 5600/rtx3070) ahaha
Very nice! I'm glad you can now play the games you want. Modern tech is just amazing
Is in mobile veraion you can recruit Luso & Balthier?
yes that is right I should have included that in the video, Balthier is optional but Luso is part of the main story or comes up rather
@@J7Jase Nice first i play fft in emulator psx, not fft wotl when i see your video about fft wotl on mobile i play from the start just to play where you can recruit luso😆
The updated version is better. I put over 300hrs in the PS1 version n goin on 150 on the mobile wotl version.
Its great despite some people not calling it a remaster. When they added multiplayer, sidequests, more scenes to clear up the story and so on
Great video friend!
Thanks Warren! The legend of Ogre Battle is here once again. I'm honored 👍
@@J7Jase Im always looking for your videos, youre awesome!
@@WarrenReport Thank you! I haven't played Tactics Ogre in a while but Knight of Lodis is on my to do list. When I'm less busy I will play it
Final Fantasy Advance is cool too 😊
Thanks, I made FFTA videos and content too. However, there is only one version of FFTA.
While this FFT had several
I hate how square hasn't ported this gamelike they did with final fantasy 1 to 6 and tactics ogre? Like why? Why can't they preserve their games? It cannot be that hard
Who knows exactly or why. I tried tweeting Yasumi Matsuno stuff about FFT (not asking about remakes or remasters, just love and appreciation for his creation.) But sadly, no reply.
So maybe sadly he just isn't interested in a project like that again :(
Can anyone recommend me mods and where to get them? I never played this so i want to have the best experience possible.
I got interested in this after hearing so many ppl talk about how great the game is and after playing the Zodiac Brave Story in FFXIV
ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=53.0
The link above.
Honestly play the base game first and if you like it then play the mods.
Wotl is better simply because the translation is 100x better . The old English fits the setting better and sounds much more mature for the time period and themes the game is going for.
Kinda sorta depends on how you look at it. Some of the ability names aren't for sure. Icewolf Bite > Crush Accessory
What about dark knight on wotl. Is it unlockble?
Yes it is
