‘It feels to me like Dragon Ball Super has been trying very, very, very hard to get away from the simplistic thing of "biggest number wins fight," which most DB fans have always focused on single-mindedly, and are trying to create a narrative about how different people, different techniques, and different transformations all interact together in different ways. Not just in an individual sense, but in a matchup sense. Someone can be the "strongest", or in other words, have the biggest number, but if the "strongest person"'s techniques, transformations, style, experience, and mindset match up badly with those of their opponent, that opponent is going to lose. All of this form experimentation we've been seeing throughout this arc is an attempt to find winning combinations for all the factors. Let's take Goku's choice of UI Sign. MUI is "stronger", but he can't use it well because he struggles with quieting his heart, and he's particularly struggling with it now. UI Sign lets him get that boost to instinctive movement while still being able to make use of his emotions. Which form is going to mesh best with his current mindset? And which form is going to be best against Gas--and his mindset--specifically? UI Sign is paying dividends here, and you can't appreciate it if you just focus on "but number not bigger!!!" Think about it like this: when people in fighting games have secondary characters for counterpicks, it's not a thing of they have a character they like and then a character that's stronger. It's about matchups. If my short-range character struggles against zoners, then I need to have a secondary who fights zoners well, even if that character is weaker, or my play as that character is not as strong. I might be better than my opponent, but their character's strengths are matching up badly with my character's weaknesses. I can switch to a character that has a more favorable matchup and I don't even have to be better than them if the difference from doing that is significant enough. But it can go just as well the other way, too. If my skills with the character who has the better matchup aren't up to snuff, I'm still going to lose. So it may still work out better to pick the character who struggles in the matchup because my comfort and skill can overcome the bad matchup. This is what Goku's been trying to figure out; using UI Sign instead of MUI is switching his character for his best approach at the matchup. They don't quite have the narrative jigsaw pieces all put together to tell the story they're trying to tell, but it feels like the central plot points of this arc--the two uses of the dragon balls to make someone the strongest in the universe--were set up explicitly for the purpose of knocking down the Dragon Ball tradition of "biggest number wins fight." They're just not connecting the dots very well because they're also trying to move the plot forward, and are struggling with that. I bet the eventual anime adaptation of this arc will do a much better job of this on virtue of seeing which blanks they left in their narrative and being able to fill them.’
This always happens a monthly manga can get boring but after you re read the whole arc when it finishes it can be more enjoyable. When they animate the Granolah arc I think they should do it seasonal but that’s just me tho.
I think people are looking at this in a 1 dimensinal, linear progressional way. UI was a technique that Goku was able to reach because of his subconscious need to push past his limits. This form allows his body to subconsciously move on its own without him having to any unnecessary thoughts weigh him down. MUI enhanced this by completely clearing not only thoughts of battle, but all emotions, making him a stoic, fighting machine. The thing is, this mindset goes against the nature of Saiyans whose power come from the thrill of battle, and more so in line with the likes of angels who are natural nonchalant and indifferent entities, which goes in line with them having strict rules about unnecessary involvement in mortal affairs. Whis explained in the beginning of the arc to Goku that as of right now, he is simply copying the angels and therefore hinders his usage and growth with the form, so he must find his own variation of ultra instinct. With the fight between gas and Bardock, we were able to see that Bardock won not because of him "clearing his mind" or anything, but because he took advantage of his natural instinct as a Saiyan which is to find thrill in the battle of a strong obstacle in order to grow, which was ultimately what allowed him to find the strength to defeat gas. Goku is now realizing that by adopting the mindset of entities that are completely opposite of his own nature hes essentially hindering or nerfing himself and he's suppressing his true desires for the sake of power which ironically is what is holding him back. This is quite genius as it gives the technique "ultra instinct" a whole new meaning, as it's not simply battle instinct, but a technique that is fueled by the true instinct and nature of the user, basically using their natural tendency and desires to boost the user to the peak of their battle potential, hence the name "ultra instinct". By having experienced the pinnacle of UI in the way of the angles via his silver-haired form, he was able to determine that such a mindset was in fact not in line with his own nature and subsequently puts him one step closer to obtaining that Whis had alluded to at the beginning of the arc, which is an Ultra instinct that is in line with him as Son Goku and as a Saiyan.

@Bob Pierson If they made a "new form" and described it as "Now Goku can use Ultra Instinct while utilizing his own mind and strategies", the argument would've simply been "hey isn't that just UI Omen?", which yes, it is. Hence why Goku is using Omen instead of a new form. And if still doesn't sit well with you, you could look at this as the equivalent to going kaiokenx100. It's a technique first, transformation 2nd, so it's power scaling is working differently. That said, it could be interesting to see Goku shift between Omen and Mastered for when he needs technique or raw power respectively. Edit: 23:20 Oh hey look at that coincidence.
There's no pay off for Ultra Ego. Sure Vegeta has lost a bunch, but why they'd have to make it an actual ability?! Turning your enemies power into hakai energy is sick.
I think I'm starting to like Gas more as the arc continues. I had thought of him as just a bland guy, but seeing how much of a slave he is to Elec made me realize that maybe that's the point of his character, that whatever character he does have (his interactions in the prison during chapter 82) takes a backseat to his assumed duty, to act as muscle for Elec. I think under that angle, Gas is interesting. It also helps tie him to the theme of the arc - obtaining strength from being your own self - in a pretty obvious way.
All Goku UI is turning into is he’s implementing his Survival Instincts or Flight or Fight response goes back to Bardock Life or Death quote now once these are pushed tend to numb your emotions and your overall pain response. my guess is they’ll use this as a way of furthering UI & UE and Goku body will naturally act offensively when attacked And suppressing emotion/negating pain is what both Saiyans need.
I don't think it's outright "omen". Omen/sign is a transitional/unfinished form, to me this works different then MUI omen, there seems to be more to it(like the time limit, and reliance on strong emotions, totally different from UI.) There might be a "Mastered" version of this that is yet to come, but me personally, I'm a fan of the simple black hair(kinda "staying true to himself" type of symbology, similar to Ultimate Gohan).
Yes but in omen he wasn't souly trying to focus which is why his hair wasn't white. This is literally the same form seen in the ToP. During the ToP he was still using emotions to fight in omen which is why White haired UI is called "mastered" ui, even though its never been mastered, he had just simply mastered relying on his emotions . So black hair/omen is the best of all worlds. Goku can use his fighting spirit and nature to become stronger while also have insane level reactions

@@jeom3808 Your theory is basically what Merus said about Sign Goku when he fought Moro, MUI and UI omen are forms that heavily drain the user , so, yes, Goku is using the same old Omen form he first achieved in the Tournament of Power, besides,the chapter clearly states that Goku cant use his MUI to the full extent because it requires a calm mind, so he prefers to use his power in a more efficient way .

This chapter however is the _first_ "omen/sign" that isn't based on UI- but something else, and because of that, the mastered version will be different. if this really were the same omen as ToP omen, it would be objectively weaker then MUI, but it isn't, unlike UI, this form enhances Goku's power (he says himself that he can now almost match Gas) and seemingly drains/exhausts it at a rapid speed.(hence Goku saying he dosen't have much time.) Omen from ToP coudn't do that, that omen/sign was a "prelude" to "MUI", a form that is based on instinctive movement, this is an omen/sign that is a "prelude" to whatever Goku's "unique instinct" will be- a form that might be based seemingly on raw or potent/intense emotion in "all-out" approach. Omen from the ToP was nothing like that (in ToP he still needed to calm his heart after the elimination of his party members and after learning the lesson Roshi gave about raw power not being what martial arts is about).
People are complaining about the pacing, I can agree this arc should end in the next 2 or 3 chapters, but to me the chapter makes up for with really great/creative choreography (which I think people are overlooking just how interesting the fights have been on a stylistic/choreographed level). I think this is a 6/10 chapter for that reason. I also wouldn't count out Vegeta or Granoah just yet.
I don’t think people are talking about the fights, just how slow it feels the story is progressing. Probably a lot to do with the month gap between each chapter though
I wouldn’t mind seeing Orichimaru coming up with a new curse mark or something to help Naruto n Sasuke or Kakashi been uncovering something in the background to level the playing field

well baryon Naruto was stronger than Ishiki but even with that full power sage mode naruto should be stronger than boroshiki since Boroshiki didn't think he could come out unscaved fight a 1 eyed weaken Sasuke after they fought Ishiki

I think sasuke could shrink the size of the full susanoo to actually wrap around himself to give him the advantage of the defense and his own speed. Jigen specifically said that his susanoo was slow so it'd be pretty cool to see sasuke flying around wraped in samurai armor and lightning

The wish Elec made to the dragon to make Gas the strongest in the universe is that when Gas gets a new power up he get's older, Gas is burning up his life energy to get stronger each time. Elec doesn't really care about Gas he is just using him as a tool for his own amusement.
I really wish they would've just had Goku improve MUI instead of using an older, incomplete form to somehow surpass Gas. We seen Goku at the beginning of this arc try to use UI with SSJ and God and Blue, but then we never see it again. The reason why MUI works for Goku, and UE works for Vegeta, is because Goku is carefree. He just fights because he likes the challenge. Vegeta is full of Ego, pride, and anger. He can't calm his emotions like Goku, hence why his Ego form was made to match MUI, and it was also made to really hint toward Vegeta achieving a God of Destruction type of form. Goku going back to a weaker a form which actually turns out to be a stronger form, only because of his saiyan instinct, which by now should mean absolutely nothing because Goku has surpassed regular Saiyans by millions of times over by now, Idk, just doesn't make any fucking sense and honestly, I hated that decision lol
The new transformation is not Omen, when goku is in Omen his hair is lifted slightly. Ultra instinct per person must be them being able to access their full power while remaining in base. Or since a Saiyan's natural hair color is black and Goku transformed into Ultra instinct the Sayain way, then the transformation would be black. Before when Goku went into Mastered Ultra Instinct the Angel way (Whis' way) his hair turned white. Whis' hair is white, and all the other angels hair color is white.

Alright, hear me out: Super saiyan UI makes no sense, he already did that at the start of the arc. However an enraged "Ultra" form that is "akin to" a "supersaiyan UI", now THAT is more likely...but SSJ+UI is already a thing ever since the start of this arc. the "enraged UI" wouldn't be an add on, it would be a completely diffrent path then UI(cus UI is an angel technique about calming your heart, an enraged version of it would be contradictory). But alright, hear me out- we saw at the start of this arc how Goku practiced on Granolah by going from omen(which is Base form + UI), to UI + SSJ, to UI + SSJGod, to then UI + SSJBlue, and then MUI. WHAT IF, this is foreshadowing the stages that he will go through as he develops his new unique "ultra" form. Going from an "omen" phase, which is his current one (Base form + Ultra-whatever), then will go SSJ + Ultra-whatever(but it won't be the "complete" version still, just like UI+SSJ, it's just using both at the same time without it being a perfect UI version), and then SSJGod+Ultra-whatever, and so on, until we get the complete showing of his unique version of UI. (btw, I think we should give props to vegeta, he's the first to realize he can make his own unique form of "UI/Ultra", he didn't learn it from Beerus, and while I think he needs to develop it further- perhaps a direction that is more true to his current-self and not his old-self, I think it's still note worthy that he was the first to make his own "ultra" form.)

@@sincere0727 🤔 the thing with that is that we already see that with MUI during the Moro arc. MUI has always been about blocking out emotions in order to stay in the heat of battle and let your body move both offensively and defensively in harmony/instinct. (less so offensively, since at heart it's still a "reactive" technique/form) plus it wouldn't make sense if "negate pain/supress emotion" is the narrative conclusion to this arc. So far, its all been about Ego, about what its role is for self-growth, and what "good" and "bad" ego is. Rn, Goku is learning to keep ownership over his feeling and emotions. Bardock demonstrate an Ego towards "I just want to win". And so UI, which is an angel thing, is being set-up as something Goku can never 100% master, because he is a saiyan with strong emotions, not an angel. Even if he can tap into it, he can't force himself to be the best at it, instead, he can use some of its teachings, and find something that is akin to Angel's instinct, but is instead his own. (hence, "his own UI".) So he basically has to go back and learn his own type of"UI", one that isn't as emotionless and 'calm-centered' as the Angel's UI. And that''s why I think he's back to an "omen" stage, because it signifies a "base/transitional" phase into a different type of UI that is base off of his own nature and not purely that of Angels. at least, when looking at the arc and every nugget of information we get, this seems to me like the clear trajectory they are taking.

Whis ultra instinct works deferently because he has no emotion towards life nor death, Goku is not like whis so Goku's ultra instinct has to be a different way no matter what his emotions is his guide, super saiyan rage, Super saiyan rage plus trauma of losing someone important Ssj 1, Ssj 2 rage ×emotional trauma × need for more power, Ssj3 is the last power for saiyans made really for quick fights since its a major energy drawback can't seem to stabilize the energy loss for its massive power. Bottom line is that Goku ui omen form is to stabilize his emotions enough to beat him in the first round ,the second round since he powered up even more Goku is going to be pushed beyond his limits again and eventually will get his next level of power

It's about matchups. If my short-range character struggles against zoners, then I need to have a secondary who fights zoners well, even if that character is weaker, or my play as that character is not as strong. I might be better than my opponent, but their character's strengths are matching up badly with my character's weaknesses. I can switch to a character that has a more favorable matchup and I don't even have to be better than them if the difference from doing that is significant enough. But it can go just as well the other way, too. If my skills with the character who has the better matchup aren't up to snuff, I'm still going to lose. So it may still work out better to pick the character who struggles in the matchup because my comfort and skill can overcome the bad matchup. This is what Goku's been trying to figure out; using UI Sign instead of MUI is switching his character for his best approach at the matchup.
They don't quite have the narrative jigsaw pieces all put together to tell the story they're trying to tell, but it feels like the central plot points of this arc--the two uses of the dragon balls to make someone the strongest in the universe--were set up explicitly for the purpose of knocking down the Dragon Ball tradition of "biggest number wins fight." They're just not connecting the dots very well because they're also trying to move the plot forward, and are struggling with that. I bet the eventual anime adaptation of this arc will do a much better job of this on virtue of seeing which blanks they left in their narrative and being able to fill them.’

I think people are looking at this in a 1 dimensinal, linear progressional way. UI was a technique that Goku was able to reach because of his subconscious need to push past his limits. This form allows his body to subconsciously move on its own without him having to any unnecessary thoughts weigh him down. MUI enhanced this by completely clearing not only thoughts of battle, but all emotions, making him a stoic, fighting machine.
The thing is, this mindset goes against the nature of Saiyans whose power come from the thrill of battle, and more so in line with the likes of angels who are natural nonchalant and indifferent entities, which goes in line with them having strict rules about unnecessary involvement in mortal affairs.
Whis explained in the beginning of the arc to Goku that as of right now, he is simply copying the angels and therefore hinders his usage and growth with the form, so he must find his own variation of ultra instinct. With the fight between gas and Bardock, we were able to see that Bardock won not because of him "clearing his mind" or anything, but because he took advantage of his natural instinct as a Saiyan which is to find thrill in the battle of a strong obstacle in order to grow, which was ultimately what allowed him to find the strength to defeat gas. Goku is now realizing that by adopting the mindset of entities that are completely opposite of his own nature hes essentially hindering or nerfing himself and he's suppressing his true desires for the sake of power which ironically is what is holding him back.
This is quite genius as it gives the technique "ultra instinct" a whole new meaning, as it's not simply battle instinct, but a technique that is fueled by the true instinct and nature of the user, basically using their natural tendency and desires to boost the user to the peak of their battle potential, hence the name "ultra instinct".
By having experienced the pinnacle of UI in the way of the angles via his silver-haired form, he was able to determine that such a mindset was in fact not in line with his own nature and subsequently puts him one step closer to obtaining that Whis had alluded to at the beginning of the arc, which is an Ultra instinct that is in line with him as Son Goku and as a Saiyan.

@Bob Pierson If they made a "new form" and described it as "Now Goku can use Ultra Instinct while utilizing his own mind and strategies", the argument would've simply been "hey isn't that just UI Omen?", which yes, it is. Hence why Goku is using Omen instead of a new form.
And if still doesn't sit well with you, you could look at this as the equivalent to going kaiokenx100. It's a technique first, transformation 2nd, so it's power scaling is working differently. That said, it could be interesting to see Goku shift between Omen and Mastered for when he needs technique or raw power respectively.

I think I'm starting to like Gas more as the arc continues. I had thought of him as just a bland guy, but seeing how much of a slave he is to Elec made me realize that maybe that's the point of his character, that whatever character he does have (his interactions in the prison during chapter 82) takes a backseat to his assumed duty, to act as muscle for Elec. I think under that angle, Gas is interesting. It also helps tie him to the theme of the arc - obtaining strength from being your own self - in a pretty obvious way.
All Goku UI is turning into is he’s implementing his Survival Instincts or Flight or Fight response goes back to Bardock Life or Death quote now once these are pushed tend to numb your emotions and your overall pain response. my guess is they’ll use this as a way of furthering UI & UE and Goku body will naturally act offensively when attacked And suppressing emotion/negating pain is what both Saiyans need.
I don't think it's outright "omen". Omen/sign is a transitional/unfinished form, to me this works different then MUI omen, there seems to be more to it(like the time limit, and reliance on strong emotions, totally different from UI.) There might be a "Mastered" version of this that is yet to come, but me personally, I'm a fan of the simple black hair(kinda "staying true to himself" type of symbology, similar to Ultimate Gohan).
Yes but in omen he wasn't souly trying to focus which is why his hair wasn't white. This is literally the same form seen in the ToP. During the ToP he was still using emotions to fight in omen which is why White haired UI is called "mastered" ui, even though its never been mastered, he had just simply mastered relying on his emotions . So black hair/omen is the best of all worlds. Goku can use his fighting spirit and nature to become stronger while also have insane level reactions

I'm saying so far they've been the same, even in ToP. This chapter however is the _first_ "omen/sign" that isn't based on UI- but something else, and because of that, the mastered version will be different.

Omen from ToP coudn't do that, that omen/sign was a "prelude" to "MUI", a form that is based on instinctive movement, this is an omen/sign that is a "prelude" to whatever Goku's "unique instinct" will be- a form that might be based seemingly on raw or potent/intense emotion in "all-out" approach. Omen from the ToP was nothing like that (in ToP he still needed to calm his heart after the elimination of his party members and after learning the lesson Roshi gave about raw power not being what martial arts is about).

People are complaining about the pacing, I can agree this arc should end in the next 2 or 3 chapters, but to me the chapter makes up for with really great/creative choreography (which I think people are overlooking just how interesting the fights have been on a stylistic/choreographed level). I think this is a 6/10 chapter for that reason.
I also wouldn't count out Vegeta or Granoah just yet.

I really wish they would've just had Goku improve MUI instead of using an older, incomplete form to somehow surpass Gas. We seen Goku at the beginning of this arc try to use UI with SSJ and God and Blue, but then we never see it again. The reason why MUI works for Goku, and UE works for Vegeta, is because Goku is carefree. He just fights because he likes the challenge. Vegeta is full of Ego, pride, and anger. He can't calm his emotions like Goku, hence why his Ego form was made to match MUI, and it was also made to really hint toward Vegeta achieving a God of Destruction type of form. The new transformation is not Omen, when goku is in Omen his hair is lifted slightly. Ultra instinct per person must be them being able to access their full power while remaining in base. Or since a Saiyan's natural hair color is black and Goku transformed into Ultra instinct the Sayain way, then the transformation would be black. Before when Goku went into Mastered Ultra Instinct the Angel way (Whis' way) his hair turned white. Whis' hair is white, and all the other angels hair color is white.

Alright, hear me out: Super saiyan UI makes no sense, he already did that at the start of the arc.
However an enraged "Ultra" form that is "akin to" a "supersaiyan UI", now THAT is more likely...but SSJ+UI is already a thing ever since the start of this arc. the "enraged UI" wouldn't be an add on, it would be a completely diffrent path then UI(cus UI is an angel technique about calming your heart, an enraged version of it would be contradictory).
But alright, hear me out- we saw at the start of this arc how Goku practiced on Granolah by going from omen(which is Base form + UI), to UI + SSJ, to UI + SSJGod, to then UI + SSJBlue, and then MUI. WHAT IF, this is foreshadowing the stages that he will go through as he develops his new unique "ultra" form.
Going from an "omen" phase, which is his current one (Base form + Ultra-whatever), then will go SSJ + Ultra-whatever(but it won't be the "complete" version still, just like UI+SSJ, it's just using both at the same time without it being a perfect UI version), and then SSJGod+Ultra-whatever, and so on, until we get the complete showing of his unique version of UI.
(btw, I think we should give props to vegeta, he's the first to realize he can make his own unique form of "UI/Ultra", he didn't learn it from Beerus, and while I think he needs to develop it further- perhaps a direction that is more true to his current-self and not his old-self, I think it's still note worthy that he was the first to make his own "ultra" form.)

MUI has always been about blocking out emotions in order to stay in the heat of battle and let your body move both offensively and defensively in harmony/instinct. (less so offensively, since at heart it's still a "reactive" technique/form)
plus it wouldn't make sense if "negate pain/supress emotion" is the narrative conclusion to this arc. So far, its all been about Ego, about what its role is for self-growth, and what "good" and "bad" ego is.
Rn, Goku is learning to keep ownership over his feeling and emotions. Bardock demonstrate an Ego towards "I just want to win". And so UI, which is an angel thing, is being set-up as something Goku can never 100% master, because he is a saiyan with strong emotions, not an angel. Even if he can tap into it, he can't force himself to be the best at it, instead, he can use some of its teachings, and find something that is akin to Angel's instinct, but is instead his own. (hence, "his own UI".)
So he basically has to go back and learn his own type of"UI", one that isn't as emotionless and 'calm-centered' as the Angel's UI. And that''s why I think he's back to an "omen" stage, because it signifies a "base/transitional" phase into a different type of UI that is base off of his own nature and not purely that of Angels.
