My favorite fact about Snorlax is “it’s not satisfied unless it eats 880lbs of food per day.” I was like I know what I wanna be when I grow up.
Childhood dream: achieved

@@sepg5084 Fun fact: "Snorlax" is the Japanese word for "American".
@@sepg5084 *Mouthful of Big Mac* yo

Snorlax has a 50% winrate in gen 2 competitive.... because it's on 100% of teams
This is so true
It have a bit over 50% because the 3 teams didnt use snorlax got 1v6ed by it.
Great run! Here's a fun Gen 2 interaction for you: Belly Drum is actually programmed to call Swords Dance's effect 6 times, but for some reason the first Swords Dance goes off before the HP check. So if your Belly Drum fails due to low HP, you'll still get a +2.
so, in Gen2 its even when its useless, as usefull as a swords dance, this is still an awesome move!
Is that patched on Showdowb or does it work?
@@LunaroseClaire showdown should not patch such glitches as they are elemental to the play experience and aren't game breaking like gen 1 dig or fly
lol was literally in the middle of typing this and saw the exact words I was typing. Coolio. No need to be redundant. What he said.
i noticed in the layout when he clicked belly drum that he was at +2 for like a brief moment and then it went up to +6. that's pretty neat
Fun Fact: Belly drum actually raises your attack by 12 stages to compensate for any attack drops you suffered prior to using belly drum :) (but obviously +6 is the most you can have)
Omg amazing factoid! Thanks for sharing.
im pretty sure its not coded as +12 but as set to 6
@@minzekatze It's coded to raise 12 stages and cap at the usual +6. It works the same way that using a move like Nasty Plot would if you was already at +5, the move is meant to give you +2 but would only give you +1 as you cap at +6.
yup, and bdrumming with a contrary Pokemon you'll get set to -6
The Lance picture where the Gyarados pops, then Charizard and the Aerodactyl is all fine, but then 3 happy Dragonites pop up for half a second and it always makes smile.
🙃
Did not expect the One-Shot While Burned against the Blastoise lol
Even with burn, it's double attack and STAB, so effectively return is a base 300 power move.
Technically belly drum gives the user +12 attack, it just caps at +6. so no matter how many attack drops it has, after that it has max attack ^^
It’s almost like the competition couldn’t “stomach” what Snorlax was dishing out. 😅
Amazing
17:25 -- Snorlax has 69 defence AND special attack -- Double Nice!
69 for the win!
Careful you don't start throwing runs because hidden power + return is so good and everyone can use it. If you're looking for the fastest times, and those moves are needed to get them, then use them if they are the best options. Wouldn't want to see caveats on times because you didn't use a move that would've been the best option because you wanted to do a weaker option just to mix things up.
Those types of runs while interesting, are kinda boring to me if you're just gojng to teach the mons the exact same moves. But everybody is different
@@matthewbailey8588Counterpoint: Body Slam in Gen 1. Everyone takes it if they can because it's just that good. That's no different to me.
@@JJ-qo7thTo me the difference is that 99.5 % of pokemon learn hidden power. While Body Slam is widespread in gen1, arguably too widespread, its not *that* all encompassing

It'll be rough going back to the 1 video a week schedule.

The warping of time and space shall now commence!
Going from Tuesday to Thursday to Sunday is such a top-level strategy at this point of the run
Super useful in Nuzlockes too because of time based encounters, namely Lapras.
Pretty surprised we didn't see Belly Drum -> Mud Slap against Morty. It would be a little hazardous to set up, but since ground is physical it would do 4x damage, guaranteeing a KO with every hit, since Gengar was a 4 hit without setup. Wouldn't have needed much more luck than the eventual thunder pynch strat.
Edit as I am still watching: in the first playthrough
Agreed except it's only 2x damage, not 4x
My gf also thought ghost was weak to ground. I guess gen 1 poisoned us.
@@Medabee8 they're saying 4x by maximising attack
@@Medabee8 2x for type effectiveness but belly drum gets Snorlax to +6 attack, and ground is physical, so would do x4 damage from the stat buff for a total of x8, 4x more than the unboosted attack.
I’m quite positive Hidden Power isn’t necessary for this run based on info like that.
I like the idea of snore, belly drum, rest, and shadow ball or another physical move to hit ghosts
It's sort of incredible how Snorlax doesn't care about being slow at all. I honestly figured that it couldn't reach S tier rank because of its base speed but seeing as it was very close, I was surprised. Still, it makes sense that Espeon would have a higher rank because it just annihilates most targets before they can even move, cutting its time significantly.
Scott !
Gen 2 trivia
Belly drum has a weird quirk where if you use it when you have less than half health technically only fails to MAX your attack but it gives you a +2 in ATT (MY GUESS it programed to give you multiple sword dance boost until you're +6).
Like so Scott see this comment so he can use this info in future Pokemkn Crystal solo runs.
I feel like since snore is physical in gen 2 that Belly Drum > Rest > Snore is probably BiS and then you can do whatever coverage tm you need for the 4th move
Fun run though, love Lax
Btw Belly Drum is actually +12, so even if you're -6 you get taken to +6
today i learned
That is so cool. Does this persist through the other games?
@@SoraDonaldGoofy99 yes
Snorlax is definitely a beast, as these playthroughs show. I'd be interested to see how some of the other potential playstyles of Snorlax could do if given the chance, but at the same time I'd be surprised if any of them beat the Belly Drum one.
Not surprised that Snorlax didn’t end up top tier. Its speed was always gonna hold it back significantly. It’s definitely top tier in the fun department though.
Snorlax was a winner of circumnstances in Gen 2. The nerf to critical hits and Hyper Beam means you can't easily one-shot or two-shot it in the physical department, while the Special split and the fact Amnesia no longer boosts damage means there are nearly no special attackers that can do that either. And then there's the things it directly got, such as the massive fact that, in Gen 2, Sleep Talk can successfully call Rest, alongside Leftovers, Curse (to patch up that physical defense), a STAB that only two evolutionary lines are immune to, and if you add Earthquake then only Skarmory resists, and a few other factors...
This is the first time running across your channel. I love your display. It makes it really easy to see how your strategies change your stats in real time and how much power your STAB + itemed moves actually have.
Chuck needs to buy a lotto ticket with that dynamic punch luck
This Pokémon gives me such good memories in competitive Pokemon battling. Thank you for doing this run. Much love to you always friend. You always beat me in emerald lol
Love seeing Snorlax do well. Love the move Belly Drum too. Used one with Greedent in a Trick Room team in sword/shield. People were worried about the power this Greedent held. Gave me a love for Greedent and I like Snorlax as a result. Please keep up the great videos.
Belly drum has to be the best strategy. You tried your best to avoid hidden power strats but they are too good. I appreciate you trying bc it made the run more interesting.
I think the drawback is while Snorlax is so bulky, it almost always moves second and you need to use belly drum strats to sweep. That’s why it loses so much time! But overall great run! Can’t wait to see more!!!
boy is it going to be fun when scott gets around marowak.
There's a glitch that's hilarious with that mon. Iirc if Marowak has Hidden Power Ghost, bone club and uses belly drum. Its attack skyrockets beyond 999 and rounds down to 0.
You have a 0 ATK pokemon for the entirety of that one round.
Aeee one more nice solo challenge Scott's congrats. I did a solo playthrough with Snorlax yesterday in Yellow and was so good. I had few resets, mostly because i didn't want to use rare candies or bad play. But its moveset is incredible and to have rest and amnesia in the begining is so broken. I even beat Sabrina on level 43 with a few resets ( thanks for crits ) and even the champion with level low than 60. I also saved the body slam and rest tm throught the game and didn't need mimic pra substitute against Agatha.
I had both gold and silver growing up. I loved snorlax so much I caught both snorlaxs in each version and created a team with 4 snorlaxs (i transferred 2 of them to one of my games). So you talk about having a tricky time deciding a movepool...well, with 4 of them, I had different moves for each one.
Snorlax 1(attacklax) - Belly Drum, Rest, Body Slam, and Earthquake
Snorlax 2(elementalax)- Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, and Rest
Snorlax 3(Magiclax)- Psychic, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power (which I think was Dark type or at least that was my goal, I think it ended up being fighting) and Rest
Snorlax 4 (Stallax) - Protect, Toxic, Body Slam, and Rest
It was very fun to play against my group of friends. And yes, my team got banned in my friend group after 2 weeks of playing with 4 snorlaxs.
There's only 1 snorlax in GSC though, not two. Gen 1 has 2 snorlax, but in Gen 2, the only available to player is the one in Vermillion City.
Hey, Scott! Thanks once again for the entertainment provided! Your hard work is really appreciated! Kabigon is a legend haha I remember as a child playing green i was so amazed by it, when i saw the second one i couldn't believeit :p once again i'd also like to suggest a comparison run of a gen1/2 original vs international versions, Cheers, mate! Your content is epic(imho ofc)
Thanks so much.
And this is before taking into account the normal damage buff from the badge boost. Rival’s Pokémon in this battle had 13 DVs in all.
Lvl 26 Pink Bow Snorlax Headbutt vs. Lvl 22 Bayleef: 35-42 (44.8 - 53.8%) -- 40.3% chance to 2HKO
Lvl 26 Snorlax Ice Punch vs. Lvl 22 Bayleef: 34-40 (43.5 - 51.2%) -- 4% chance to 2HKO
Stop using special moves on lax unless it’s x4 or against steelix.
Denis!
I love your runs Scott, you are a truly positive experience on UA-cam and your video's rock
Just on your comment re hidden power.
I agree - it can be the new double team. Can solve every problem.
I'd almost contemplate giving that the same rule as double team.
Can't use tm until lvl 100.
Trainer 1 " nothing is stronger then the freindship between me and my pokemon!"
Trainer 2 " oh yeah? Prove it."
Trainer 1 " Snorlax, use Return!*wipes enemy team in one shot fashion"
Trainer 2 "power of freindship is bs."
I love this plump bear-cat-developer! So cute! I feel like a Snorlax some days though… But I must push on!
Would love to see Snorlax speedrun races in any Gen for the future since there’s so many different strategies to test with it.
The reason Chuck hit those dynamic punches was due to mind reader "taking aim"...boosts accuracy (I think)
Pidgeot casually Mirror Moving Belly Drum and then immediately falling asleep because he Mirror Moves Rest is peak comedy.
Honestly belly drum rest snore is probably a pretty broken strat since snore is a physical attack this gen and is used while asleep so you could set up heal and then attack for free.
Snore's a pretty weak move though.
Snore has low base power though.
Perfect timing!! Just started eating lunch 💖
I'm surprised you haven't relegated Pryce to the same level as Bruno. "This random man who wandered into the gym" lol
No, no, Pryce is clearly a Gym Leader, just like Gift Shop Manager Surge (which was JRose's invention, but Scott has referenced it with accreditation).
He is that bad. (Except when you’re Gligar.)
You use rest an infuriating amount but finally it's on a Pokemon that actually makes sense!
I'm still catching up on a few vids, but I HAVE to watch this one now. This is going to be so good. It's going to do so well. Curious to see if curse makes an appearance 😈😈😈😈
I definitely would've ended up going for belly drum-headbutt/return on my first try of this
I get where you're coming from with the move variety issue. Trying fo pick a moveset for it is definitely hard!
I personally would go for a set of Return, Belly Drum, Earthquake and a 4th slot for whatever I need to beat certain trainers (or maybe just rest). The only pokemon I can think of that resists both Return and Earthquake in gen 2 is Skamory.
But I can see an argument for defense curl + rollout as well, but I don't think that would be as good as belly drum on snorlax, especially once you get the leftovers.
Edit after watching the whole video: I think you did well with Snorlax. Its main weakness is that it needs set-up when other top tier pokemon don't, and it's slow so it has to let the opponent act before it, which both takes time and means you'll need rest more often, which is slower than just sweeping.
It doesn't matter if something resists though if you're using Belly Drum.
Snorlax is so versatile and that is why it is so great for solo challenges and team challenges. There are so many move combos thanks to its move pool that you can beat the game in a myriad of cool ways.
Great to see my favorite! Top notch video scott
Sleepy bear
That’s an old reference.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon a Scott's Thoughts deep cut
SPOILERS BELOW!
I think Snorlax literally missed the S-teir because it was too slow. Like, if it had the first hit against all the pokemon it one-shot, that's gotta be at least 45 seconds saved. But that's just how Pokémon works! Still a nice run!
I agree!
I'm sure you're already aware but the Poliwrath was using Mind Reader prior to Dynamic Punch. It's an equivalent of Lock On which guarantees inaccurate moves hit
That hyper beam incident is exactly why I always spam B instead of A. Even just restarted the poke center dialogue was enough to convert me to a B spammer.
Also need to throw in that knocking out reds Snorlax with yours 5 and 10 levels before his felt like such a flex!
Yup. Me too. Note to self, never spam A and look away.
Really love the attack stat against Bruno and Karen 🤘🏻
i am 28 years old and grew on on gen 2 pokemon and am just today learning belly drum was in gen 2. i always thought it was introduced in gen 3 as a signature move for the makuhita line
I love that pigeot mirror move
Snorlax has one of the most varied movepool for a normal type. It's basically can take any way it can, even though I wouldn't have tried a special attacker's set with it. I think that the moves that you were using were good for it, as long as it doesn't get confused. I would personally prefer to use sleep talk, rest, belly drum, return/body slam, because setting up cruse would take longer, but it's more consistent.
I wonder how a skull bashing Snorlax from gen 1 would do in gen 2? 🤔
Anyways, that was a really good video, so thanks for doing these for us. I really appreciate that. ☺️
Saying this before I finish watching. Possible setup combo. Leftovers for passive healing, belly drum, defense curl, rollout.
Snorlax 666 attack during the Karen fight lol. Telling her she's about to face the beast.
Scott I have an idea. If its not too difficult for your editor, have the solopoko wear the held item. IMAGINE SNORLAX WITH A PINK BOW ON HIS EAR! orr a Rayquaza wearing a sharp beak over its nose :P
that sounds awesome
Imagine a fire type having a charcoal in its mouth
This would cost a lot of money. Maybe if the channel continues to grow!
Belly Drum is absolutely a trap for this kind of playthrough on this kind of pokemon. Belly Drum could work in a no items solo playthrough on a pokemon fast enough to reliably outspeed the enemy's pokemon so it can clearly sweep after setting up, but Snorlax is way too slow. So you get what happened against Chuck, where not only do you give your enemy a free hit when you set up, but also every turn after that the enemy gets to attack. And you're at low HP because of Belly Drum. It's a recipe for disaster.
I think that what would work better is Defense Curl plus Rollout. I know, it can be unreliable, it's not always the right call, but it A) helps fix Snorlax's lackluster defense and B) gives it a seriously powerful move against enemies that Normal-type moves aren't great against. If you didn't want to resort to Hidden Power Ground, this would have probably been a better choice for dealing with Morty (assuming you don't get hit by Hypnosis but that's a worry in any fight against him with a slow 'mon like Snorlax.) You mention that you'll learn Rollout later anyway, but see that's why I think going for Defense Curl+Rollout early is actually the better option: You really want it early on (it'll help vs Whitney in place of Belly Drum) and then if you need the move slots for something else in the mid game, you can safely replace them knowing that at level 50 you'll get another shot at Rollout.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
Wondering if Hidden Power Flying would make Chuck more reliable, oughtta do plenty against Morty and OHKO Poliwrath without needing a crit. Needs Fire Punch for Jasmine perhaps, but seems more consistent.
Hidden power flying would ohko any fighters and still be a phys move to kill gengars. Any phys move from a belly drummed Snorlax is an ohko. Just an observation, great vid!
The perfect strat: Amnesia, Defense Curl, Belly Drum and Rest.
…
Kind of feels like I forgot something.
Perfect :)
Belly drum Snorlax though 🤌🤌🤌
Almost every opponent got an attack in before you could take them out. that wasn't dangerous to his survival, but it adds up and means it won't get a record time
scott be like "snorlax is really falling behind in level" nah homie hes just keeping in the horrible leveling curve of gen 2 xD
While maybe not practical, would love to see a Snorlax with Belly Drum, Rest, Defense Curl, and Rollout. Just imagine the carnage...
Even tackle is doing over 200 base power with Belly Drum and STAB so why do you need Rollout's increasing power? Either Defense Curl, Rollout without Belly Drum or just use Belly Drum and a standard damaging move.
@@David-ud9ju I didn’t say it was practical. I said it was epic. Overkill? Absolutely. But also amazing? You betcha
So little fun fact about competitive, Snorlax is the single best Pokemon in gen 2. This INCLUDES ubers, so Lax is ranked above Lugia, Ho-oh, Mew, Mewtwo and Celebi. Absolutely insane.
Believable. It’s so strong.
He will mosey his way along but he shall mosey with flying colors. After finishing I’d like to add that curse or belly drum is the correct play. You can always use the mint berry to wake up from rest but it’s usually bulky enough to wake up with good HP.
Damn Blue in that first fight almost pulled off the galaxy brain strat, then he remember he originated in gen 1 and is thus obligated to play like a moron
I’m surprised you didn’t use fire punch for Jasmine for the first run… I’ll edit my comment if i see anything else
Edit: I definitely woulda thought it woulda got a better time especially with its move pool!
Also confused by that
I thought the same
The first Move Reminder was a reward for finishing one of the major tasks in Pokemon Stadium 2/GS. I forget which task unlocks it.
Been waiting for this one
Belly Drum actually doesn't just give +6 in ATK. What it does is maximize your ATK stat, so if you get Featherdanced or Growled before using it, you STILL end up at +6, regardless of your negative stages. It's up to a +12 ATK boost.
Edit: just read further down in the comments that this has already been mentioned, so to at least contribute something, I don't think Morty missing 2 out of 3 Hypnosis is particularly lucky. The Gen 1 and 2 AI status miss is calculated after the hit check is successful, so you can multiply the probabilities to find out that the probability that the AI hits a Hypnosis is 0.6 * 0.75 = 0.45 = 45%.
We can now compare the chances of hitting 2 out of 3 times and missing 2 out of 3 times with the probability mass function, c(n,k)*p^k*(1-p)^(n-k) where n is the total number of trials, k is the total amount of successes and p is the probability for a success.
Hitting twice out of 3 times with a 45% accurate move occurs with a chance of c(3,2)*0.45^2*0.55 = 0.334125 or about 33.4%.
Missing twice out of 3 times with a 45% accurate move occurs with a chance of c(3,2)*0.55^2*0.45^1 = 0.408375 or about 40.8%.
All in all, you 3-shot the Gengar, giving it 3 opportunities to move. So you will win if you get hit once or not at all with Hypnosis, else you lose. The neat thing is that you can shove the PMF into a sum and just add it together. The total outcome is that you have a 57.5% chance to win and a 42.5% chance to lose, so you were always favored.
(Above math does not factor in the mud slap accuracy drop as I'm not really sure how it works, but it would favor you to win in all cases)
Great comment.
I am predicting we see Defense Curl > Rollout at some point
Punches are all special in this gen. Return would always do more to everything than punches except for maybe steelix. Honestly return and EQ or shadow ball would hit everything extremely hard leaving you with curse and rest for survival.
Return and EQ cover more than Return and Shadow Ball. Psychics are hit hard enough with Return anyway and the Ghosts you fight are the Gastly line who are all weak to EQ.
Whats hilarious about hidden power, you had perfect ivs for snorlax. That is hidden power dark if I am right. I'm think I am. You still could have used it for morty.
Indeed

The reason Snorlax wasn't that fast is because he's slow and therefore you'll waste a lot of time from the tickles the opponent will do. I think Ursaring would be unironically the fastest mon due to higher speed, attack, special attack and level curve, and even though it has a worse movepool and bulk, it's good enough to break through the game.
Ursaring is going to be amazing!
In gen 2 i think belly drum gives you +2 if your below 50% health cause belly drum does swords dance 6 times when it works but it needs 1 swords dance when you use the move to start the procedure i saw it on a glitch youtube video
Hey just a tip, because I’m always wondering half way through what time we’re aiming for with a solo run. Maybe if you could show the timetables in the beginning for a couple seconds like you do at the end.
Ps. Huge fan, I haven’t had many favorite UA-camrs but I look forward to these videos every day.
Thanks Kyle!
Snorlax getting a haircut is so joyful😂😂😂
I think snorlax is still my fav after all these years.
Ok I’ve watched it now. I wonder if the lower attack needed to get hidden power ground is what caused the failed one hit on snorlax at the end? If so, I wonder if hidden power dark would be fine? Probably still as good against morty, and you could use fire punch instead of ice punch on jasmine. Maybe?
The lower Attack DV for sure. I mean, Ground seems necessary until Earthquake becomes available so the DVs have to stick or it's not really a proper solo run. HP Dark probably won't be as good against Morty as Dark is a Special type in Gen 2.
The return of Sleepy bear!
No matter how beefy a Pokemon is, a poor speed stat is always a disadvantage.
I'm glad we saw the Curselax at the end 😁😁
16:39 - Headbutt can't flinch if you are slower, but I'm sure you knew that 😅
I do
Awesome run, bro!
Anytime Snorlax outspeeds, you should be very afraid
If Snorlax is to have the best chance to finish faster than the box legendaries, it must be allowed to have every advantage available, especially hidden power ground. The ghost and steel gyms can be optimally fast with this upgrade. :)
Belly Drum
Return
Hidden Power Ground
Rest
why no fire punch for jasmine?
why no quick claw?
It’s been over 20 years, why can’t they just admit that Gym Leaders and Elite Four members have higher accuracy percentages?
Belly drum, defense curl, rollout, rest.
I dunno why this vid got me thinking of my first ever online battle… 3v3, 1 on 1, and I squeezed a victory. How the heck did I mirror match, let alone with poor stats and non-IV trained, I somehow won due to my Gyrados knowing ice fang.
(For those curious, Pokemon Sun, team was Alolan Richu, Inceneroar, and Gyrados)
Question: does Karen have some AI modification that forces her to use Sand Attack on the first turn? If so, you could run Protect specifically for that one turn and make Karen consistent. That move stonewalls literally every GSC solo run ever.
Protect is only available in Kanto (Celadon City), but you could use Detect instead, however, few Pokémon learn that move.
I'm surprised you didn't use Fire Punch for Jasmine
