- Pay Sohla. Bon Appétit pays none of their BIPOC staff for ANY of their video appearances. That means Sohla, Rick, Gaby, Priya, and Christina have NEVER been compensated for their video work while their white coworkers (Brad, Claire, Molly, Carla, Delany, Chris, and Amiel) have. Compensate your BIPOC Bon Appétit. Inacceptable.
Edit: This video is meant to highlight Sohla's expertise (and not compare her to her coworkers). The reason these clips are from Gourmet Makes is because (as an avid viewer) I knew Sohla has shared so much knowledge on that show. I don't know if anyone makes money from video appearances, but I know that Sohla (and Rick, Gaby, Priya, Christina) has never made money from any of the recipe videos they create or the challenge videos they take part in while Claire, Brad, Chris, Delany, Molly, and Carla do. Thanks!

And for some reason Chris was "deemed" the tempering chocolate expert a some-odd months ago.. (I remember the ASMR video). If someone doesn't have the experience or skills, I practically do not see why a company has to push forward "expertise"/ethos. It was only until BA had a hold of a 15-yrs-experienced, rare, and valuable employee that things became legit.

The racism. Prejudice is deeply engrained, to the point where it isn't really noticed. Her co-workers aren't necessarily the racist ones. It's whoever calls the shots as far as who gets paid and what job they have that's dropping the ball here. She's clearly far more skilled and talented than the rest of her co-workers combined, yet she's still background help. That's all the proof you need.
Tamara agreed. She makes most of her co-workers look like home cooks, or complete beginners. She has over double the experience of everyone around her, but doesn’t even get paid or have the same opportunities as everyone else. I think she should really have her own personal series, and honestly I’d love to see her host a few episodes of gourmet makes too? She NEEDS to have a series where she plays around and experiments with food- she blossoms in the creative department from what I see.

@@nooisebots a few weeks ago it was a breaking story in BA. Solah gets paid 50K a year as assistant editor, even though she has the most skill and is one of the ones with the most education. Other BA chefs were shocked when they learned she made so little. 50K a year in New York is essentially poverty, btw.

Whats interesting is BA is Claire's FIRST job out of culinary school. She joined BA in 2013 and became a senior food editor before negotiating her contract as a freelancer.I can't even imagine what she is paid. (I fucking love Claire but I also love fair wage)

I was just about to argue that as Sohla just got to Bon Appetit that was the reason she was earning that (because making videos is very different from cooking in a restaurant so she kind has to start from the beginning), but knowing now that this is Claire's first job after culinary school just blew my mind

Also Sohlas job isn’t appearing in videos. It’s to develop recipes and to write and research about food for the magazine. The videos are on top of that and thats one of her critiques, that she (and other POC) are pushed in front of video and aren’t compensated separately like the other food editors are. It’s all quite shitty. Makes me sad. I love BA.. Sohla used to be head chef of her own restaurant with her husband, she developed her entire menu after working at Michelin star restaurants. She’s is definitely seasoned in creating recipes- which is the actual job description. 😭
This is why sharing what’s your pay is in the workplace is needed.
it’s awkward to do that because it’s uncommon, but it really helps make sure your boss is treating you fairly.
Grace D the reason it’s uncommon is because bosses don’t want their employees to find out someone’s being payed less, that’s literally what they did to the BA staff because in their contracts if they talk to each other about what they’re being payed they can face repercussions or even be fired

The nature of the unfairness may vary from workplace to workplace, but I know that in almost any workplace of reasonable size, there would be shocks if pay were made public.
As a casual viewer of BA I enjoyed moments like this as I ignorantly assumed the channel’s charm was due to the casual and relaxed collaborations with the different chefs. It was horrible to discover the truth, but I’m now thrilled to see Sohla smashing it on her new show with Babish 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

She might have talent in a kitchen but she has a smug and horrible personality part of the reason Clair got paid more is because the show that started Clair was banking 10million viewers + per episode and the reason people like Clair was she wasn’t condescending would actually ask for help or advice if she needed it would do things out of her comfort zone that she wasn’t good at witch let’s be honest was the whole show them making her try things she wasn’t actually trained in even tho she was a professional chef (pastry) it makes it approachable for people wanting to learn sola deserves the 80k average views she gets now without the safety net of working at compass and isn’t getting pitty views from people who felt bad for her after she quit blowing because of a work environment where she actively created a scandal so bad that the company had to fire there directors and rebrand to escape the drama now both her and the company that capitulated to her bs are both failing to do even half as good as before

They all seem super dismissive of Sohla while also requiring her expertise to accomplish their tasks. Their privilege is soul-crushing.
I think claire was kind of humble. She always gave her credit and was one of (if not the first) one to stand up against BA once Sohla told her story. But I agree, the men were awful.

Sohla is so obviously a talent that her team members recognize and value. They always go to her for help. She should be paid well, promoted if appropriate and given her own show. She’s great!

It’s literally her job to help, she should’ve climbed up quite a while ago to a personality like Claire and Brad. Pretty much every POC personality in this company are only there to make food from their own culture- even if that’s not where their strengths lay. This has happened in many workplaces I've been in. The managers spot the most talented, hardest working people and then give them as many extra duties as they will take on, without extra pay. The employee thinks, "Great! I'll show them how valuable I am and I'll be rewarded." The manager thinks, "Great! This fool will do half of my job and I don't have to ask for a higher budget."
The reason you will never get a raise is that the manager doesn't want to explain to the bosses that an intern is actually doing most of his work for far less pay. That would be a real threat to his position.

Honestly, Claire relies on a lot on other's help in those videos. And the more successful/important details in the final pieces are usually other people's ideas. In general im not fond of Claire, I find her kinda lacking(considering its her job, not just some home chef trying to pull recipes out of nowhere) but people have a soft spot for her🤷♂️

At 4:20 you can see when Chris says “we needed an extra person to stir” about Sohla that it completely discredited all the work Sohla did and her body language completely changed. She dropped the chocolate and physical backed away from the table and the conversation. She did all of the work for them and came up with every good idea just like in all the other scenarios and never got the credit or monetary compensation for it. Smh. So much happier she’s with Babish and creating content she’s passionate about and getting full recognition for it like she truly deserves.

Other people think "oh, it's just a paper cut, what's the fuss" -- but you've got thousands of paper cuts on you already, and you'll get many more in the future until you waste away completely. The thing about clair is that she never wanted to do gourmet makes in the first place, they kept pushing her to do it and then realized how much the youtube audience was enjoying her successes just as much as her failures on the show. Sohla on the other hand I feel needed to be given not only her own show but as well a position of leadership for the test kitchen team because so far after seeing so many videos I feel she's the one with the most culturally diverse pallet.
@@seedz4443 I'm not sure what I as a viewer would enjoy more, Claire getting frustrated with a setback or Sohla (sp) just rolling with the punches and creating something new from the setback. The more recent GM episodes Claire has been able to bounce back from the setbacks with more determination but seeing the at home videos with Sohla (sp) she's able to keep things moving as well as gives us information about what she's doing, how it should turn out and what went wrong.
I only watch the Gourmet Makes series for Claire's personality, since the beginning I got really annoyed on how oblivious she could be with certain things and still be a highly paid food producer and pastry chef, I was really impressed when Sohla was introduced and started helping everyone, shes amazing and have waaaay more expertise than most of the crew

So I don't know if he was directly a reason for her low pay, but it does sound like he was a bit of a control freak. Which, given how he acts in most of the BA videos, doesn't surprise me that much.

Claire gets payed more than sohla in general and for appearance in video. But sohla has 15 years of experience making her more skilled then Claire. Im not entirely sure but some say Claire gets paid 20k per video while Sohla’s paycheck each year is 50k. (Do not quote me on this tho)

If Claire from BA who has one of the largest shows on the channel made more money than Brad who bring in far less viewership would that be bullshit and an example of systematic sexism at BA? Being of a certain race is not a qualification. Certain creators brought more in and possessed desired skills and were therefor paid more.
It actually infuriates me how the white guys said they needed “an extra hand to stir” when she lead them through the whole process. She remained humble about it like the queen she is. I think that they might have been doing a challenge together, where they couldn't use anybody else's help in the challenge and they jokingly lied that she was only stirring. It's very easy to take clips out of context and BA actually had a lot of challenges like that.

What if I were to turn this around.. everyone’s race in the show is changed from white to black and say Sohla was white and I said “It makes me mad that black people can be belligerent in a professional environment and not be reprimanded but God forbid a white person swears.”
I think Sohla should be paid for every time she was on camera helping the crew or making her own videos. But I don’t think it’s fair to lump all white people into one category because Chris didn’t make a correct statement.

We all LOVE Carla but the woman doesn't know as much about starches as she think she does. They keep touting Claire as a "pastry chef" but keeps having to pull Sohla in to temper chocolate, or has to result in wasting plastic and water to sous vide chocolate. Brad's a "fermentation" guy but doesn't know what a dosa is (you live in Jersey Brad. There's no excuse).
Claire is a pastry chef, not a chocolatier. And to both their credit, they have never needed each other for the act of how to do it, but they asked each other like a complimentary cross check, and that's something professionals do among their peers they respect. I have respect for both these women for the education they have, experience they have, and the things they've inspired people to make.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in full agreement with you and share the outrage. But let's not drag down the people that are supporting Sohla, Gaby, Christina, Hawa, etc. through their activism.

Adam Williams I am a pastry cook who has worked with actual Pastry Chefs. To call Claire a Pastry Chef either overestimates her versatility or dismisses the skills required to be a Pastry Chef. I know Chef is the common term but it really means something different in working kitchens. Think of it like “Dr.” it’s an honorific that holds meaning and to pass it out to everyone regardless of expertise diminishes the that meaning. Claire is a good pastry cook and incredibly smart, but she ain’t no Chef yet

I kind of agree with what you say for Claire and Brad, although as pointed out Claire isn’t a chocolatier but some knowledge of it should be had by any pastry chef since they’ll be working with it so often in recipes, and Brad while charming does have his faults at times, such as speaking over others and coming off a bit jerky. After the video of Sohla, Carla, and Chris I thought Sohla should get her own show. Seeing her creativity, expertise, and ingenuity when it comes to food is amazing to watch. If she had a show where she takes "normal" food or popular snacks (kinda like gourmet makes) and reversed engineered them into experimental I think that would be sick. At the very least she deserves way more than she's been given and I can't watch BA until the fix and atone for their mistakes.

I tried commenting on their UA-cam channel about getting people to unsubscribe to actually maybe cause some change and the amount of hate and blatant racism in their comment section is gross. I did not unsubscribe from their channel but I wouldn’t have known the difference since they haven’t uploaded any content since the story broke. This is partially because the other editors are refusing to film, in solidarity with Sohla, Priya, and other BIPOC at BA. Also their emails have almost completely stopped except for updates about how they are working to turn this shit around and getting a new editor in chief. It’s not just paying BIPOC for appearing in videos and compensating them for just how much they bring to the fable. They’re also looking at where white editors have appropriated foods from other cultures and bastardized their ingredients or techniques. It’s about who gets to cook what kind of cuisine
From the looks of it they are taking this matter extremely seriously. That said, they’re still overseen by Condé Nast, which is a publishing group that has not been good to non-white editors, writers, and staff. Maybe this will create a sea change at Condé Nast as well? Only time will tell.

Working pastry cook here. Y’all are 100% right that Sohla can cook circles around some of her peers. She has clearly gone through a shit ton of R+D for her own menus. Every Chef (capitol C) running a kitchen should be at her level or above, period. That said I find it almost impossible to believe Clair does not know how to temper chocolate. Pastry is specialized for a reason and not having that skill in your repertoire would straight up lose you a ton of respect in a pastry kitchen. If you’re at the level that Clair is at, it would probably cost you your job. I’m hoping it was an excuse to incorporate more of the unpaid cast and not a blind spot in her knowledge.
Did some research. I assumed Clair had more hands on real world kitchen experience. I do think she is at the right knowledge level to make reverse engineering recipes into a good show (no drama if it’s almost perfect the first time). But I over estimated her resume and BA standards. I totally believe she hasn’t tempered chocolate since culinary school. There’s no way in hell I would admit that I didn’t know how to temper on camera if I was an editor at BA. I’m sure she quietly lost some respect that day.

America's Test Kitchen makes the testing part of the story of the recipe and go one further, sending the recipes to home cooks to make sure the recipes and instructions are written well enough before they film it. BA is like watching the contestants of Nailed It try to host their own show.

Basically, photos leaked of Adam and Allison Roman both in racially insensitive costuming/brownface. This led to the revelation that only the white editors were paid for video content at BA. Sohla was only making $50k salary despite many more years of experience than other higher paid white coworkers. Claire made $20k minimum per video while a black guest chef was paid $400. These are just some of the details that leaked. Vulture just published a pieces tracking all of it and more. Details continue to leak. Carla sent targeted emails while white guys like Delaney were allowed to continue visiting the kitchen without permission. Matt H, the editor has been suspended and Delany’s misogynistic tweets were compiled and screenshot. Keep up. Everyday systemic racism is alive and well.

Svenja M. Are you serious? As if I would bother making this up. The news broke a couple weeks ago. Sohla and Adam were trending all day on Twitter when the news broke. People were more gagged to learn only the white people were getting paid for videos than the brownface photo of Adam. If you look, there are multiple articles published on the scandal as well. Lots of places to read up on the scandal, but Vulture has comprehensive coverage of it and similar scandals that also broke around the same time. In the tater tot episode, not only did she help with forming the tater tots, she made this amazing braised short rib filling for the tater top shepherds pie mash up and it looked so delicious and stunning. It's easy to see Sohla knows more than anyone else and her being humble about that and is always ready to help people makes her that much more enjoyable to watch.
With the number of times they had to call sohla over she def should've been in a leadership role (idk if she was but she def deserved a leadership position with her qualifications and the way the kitchen would come to her for help with everything)
I always loved watching Sohla's videos because she has such a great, bubbly personality. I was so sad to hear that she and other BIPOC were not compensated and mistreated by BA. She's a gem!
