Gingerbread Showdown: Priya and Seth Vs. Sohla and Ham | NYT Cooking

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- It’s Priya and Seth vs. Sohla and Ham in an epic, exhausting and delicious gingerbread house competition. Without spoiling anything: There will be power tools, dry ice and a whole octopus. We couldn’t think of a better way to break in the almost-finished NYT Cooking studio. (Still a work in progress, but… look at all that light!)
Clearly, they’re all going to be winners. But let us know in the comments: Which house are you going for first?

About NYT Cooking:
All the food that’s fit to eat (yes, it’s an official New York Times production).
Priya and Seth are the organized and ambitious people I want to be
Sohla and Ham are the chaotic "it'll be fine" people I am
I want to be as chill and relaxed and hard working as Sohla and Ham. But I am more like Priya :D
😅
And yet Sohla’s house is the one I’d want to eat all day. 😊 No shade to Seth and Priya.
Lmao so Priya/Seth are the type A couple and Sohla/Ham are type B
True
“Do you have time to make more?”
Sohla: “yea, but I just.. don’t want to.”
Sohla is all of us.
But super talented.
Love the honesty she's built with
@@roddammit5510 loooool except for being truthful about your own failures

This is the absolute best version of 'Type A' vs 'Type B' I've ever seen.
Type A people are called such because they demanded to be listed first and the Type B people were like "sure dude that's fine whatever".
Well if it isn't my two favourite South Asian cooking queens and their somehow perfectly matched partners.
To be fair Sohla is actually a cooking queen whereas Priya is a queen of food writers.
What's Sohla's ethnicity? All this long I was assuming she is Arab lol😅
@@jumanaa According to Wikipedia, her family is Bengali
@@charlie6923 wow that's cool to know! I'm bengali as well so that makes me more happy 😁
@@jumanaa same i thought she was Egyptian because of her surname
This feels like watching the really really clever people talk about the exam.
Surprisingly, it's an architecture class.
Yes 😭
Priya and Seth: we will DOMINATE
Sohla and Ham: ...meh, I'm just here for a good time?
Also if two teams are making things, and only one of the things gets eaten, the team that made that thing wins.
Both of them worked in high stress level professional kitchens. Now they're just here chilling and trying to have a good time. And whipping egg whites by hand for a meringue while there is fat in the bowl.
The difference in approach and scale between the two of them is legitimately hilarious to me
@@TalkAsSoftAsChalk or just left to cool for too long =)
Lol
I love how priya and Seth are making an actual gingerbread house and sohla and Hal are making a seafood feast. Are they even doing the same competition?? 😂😂😂
Sohla working with Andrew Rea has permanently corrupted her.
@@WashashoreProd shes been a creative chef since before BCU, remember the modern dessert carbonara?
Great move by NYT. Getting priya and sohla on board
Amen, from Seattle.
Priya has freelanced for NYT for years
Right? I hope they can carry on a bit of the BA test kitchen vibes.
@E Allison only has herself to blame for that one
@@sfowler1017 how tho? She just criticized another persons work
The chemistry between Sohla and Ham is so unreal. Their vibe and energy made this video for me. I don't know what NYT cooking is trying to do but whatever it is these two have got to be involved.
They're married!!
Completely agree! They are such an awesome, compatible couple. Love them
It's incredible watching BA being dismantled and reassembled throughout other channels, recreating the magic and leaving BA in the dust.
BA failed to realize what makes their channel interesting is the people in it. I still watch sometimes new BA contents but we know how the magic has lost since the most of them left.
I think the BA magic came from 1. The people, 2. The repartee between them, and 3. The editing/onscreen comments, which had a personality of its own and made fun of the cast. I hope the NYT ups its editing style.
@@Sbeth85 The editing is a surprisingly huge component. When the new videos started rolling out I really had no issues with all the new cooks they were bring in but the videos were fairly lifeless even when the chef had personality. That editing is huge.
@@xylo5750 Yeah but that doesn't matter. They will never be as successful because they're racist twats and there will always be people (like me) who avoid their channel purposely
I felt the same. Ny times NEW test kitchen!
I cant believe I just heard "I dont think I'm gonna be able to make the terrazzo" in a gingerbread house making video
NYT just happens to build a huge test kitchen after the BA fall-out. Imagine that. Great move on their part and I am loving some of the recipes they are putting out. The buttermilk turkey they did for Thanksgiving this year was phenomenal. The people I served it to usually don't even like turkey, but they liked that recipe.
And leave it to Sohla to do a savory gingerbread house. She is continually full of surprises.
I LOVE IT! BA's unbelievable screw up has been the windfall for so many and I Love it!
@N K R oh it's a very, long sad story involving racism, unequal treatment/pay, a toxic work environment, and other unsavory doings. It ended with some executives resigning in disgrace and one talented chef after another leaving or refusing to appear in any further BA videos
Great point. Smart move on their part. Nice to see some the beloved (former) BA talent too
Also, was that that Rhoda with the clapboard at the beginning?
Edit: nah, it wasn’t. My bad.
Why does Seth feels like a quintessential New Yorker, a type A architect who bakes. Like if you have a movie set in New York, the main character would be an architect who bakes and makes a FLW gingerbread house with terrain & waterfall.
Hallmark has eyes all over this video 🤣
I don't think you've ever met anybody from NYC
So the architect in holiday movies does exist. It’s Seth.
@@timothyauld6676 I believe they are comparing Seth to Hollywood's portrayal of New Yorkers, while not saying that it is an accurate portrayal.

Sohla; what ever, for our seafood carcuterie board in the form of a house, we have...
Lmmmmaoooooooo omg
It was unlike any Feast of the Seven Fishes I've ever seen, and I'm on board! Sohla is special in so many ways.
“We got nothing and Ham’s walking the dogs”
A king!!!
I know Sohla can cook (understatement of the year) but I feel like I saw her true potential and range of food in this video. That seafood house is spectacular and so creative. And her hubs, Ham, is awesome. You can tell he’s a professional because he’s cleaning up as he goes (true mark of a cook)
I remember how impressed I was when she deconstructed the carbonara way back in BA.
@@jerryjaena8513 I started that video, but never finished it and I don't want to give BA my views. I hope she recreates it, because the concept of making a savory, traditional pasta dish a dessert is next level.
Dont quote me on this but this might be her...brother? I thought her husband was white/Australian?

It’s now a bit. He’s done it in all three videos at this point
I love how Ham and Sohla accurately predicted how extra Seth's house was going to be and just decided to do whatever the hell they want it
project: gingerbread house
Sohla: let's start the soup
And fish and octopus, what? How is that gingerbread?
love the contrast of extremes between Priya and Seth's almost military precision and Sohla and Ham's 'let's just wing it'
Sohla and Ham delicately placing tiny seafood landscaping around their house is ADORABLE

Dear NYT cooking,
Release a B roll of this which is also 25 mins long.

I see Seth is finally “partner” instead of “roommate” 😂
I was waiting to see which she'd say after the long pause, lol
I was gonna comment the same thing 😂😂😂
They're definitely dating. Nobody stretches like that if they're not
I feel that's the South Asian conservative in her 😂
@@aaronlee6361 they've been dating for years. Seth has gone on family vactions with Priya's family and is constantly featured on Priya's IG stories "Seth Bakes". He's a cool dude.
LOVE BOTH TEAMS; LOVE EACH OF THEM; LOVE THIS EPISODE. Would have LOVED way more time to view their process and individual houses without the bouncing around camera work. Give us time to focus, take in the amazing work and creativity. We need to have time to savor the experience. We all have the attention span to do this. Trust us.
Agreed this was awesome but I would have loved to see more of the process.
I would have loved a bit more of a zoom in of the houses at the end excpecially
you said it perfectly!
yes!!!!!!!!!
Couldn’t agree more
I love this video for many reasons (Priya, Sohla AND their equally talented
s/o’s ?) but please consider adding captions to this video. The masks although great, make it difficult for the hearing impaired to watch! Just a suggestion :-)
Also good reading practice for those of us who arent native english speakers
Yes! I am glad they were wearing masks, but that also makes it much harder to tell what they're saying. A big organization like the NYT should also be able to easily provide captioning.
Commenting to push this up
Sigh, youtube shouldve let us keep the option of submitting captions
Yes, please NYT
The tiny mushrooms and octopus bush's were so on point for a model.
If anyone ever asks me what I want in a romantic relationship, I’ll just show them this video. Sohla saying that this is what she and Ham do on the weekends made me realize what I want in life
I want to be Sohla and Ham, but I also want to be Priya and Seth. I get that that contradicts itself, but I want it.
Sohla and Ham are such a power couple, they’re the kind of virtuosos that undersell their absolutely INCREDIBLE creations.
why is this only 23 minutes this should be an hour long!! EXTENDED CUTTTT
YES!!! With still photographs of every single component so we can really enjoy and appreciate!!!
I need a full theatrical cut and an uncut version lmao
Agree
Why is it tiiiiimed??? As a viewer, I’d rather see his Seth’s full creation. And just in general, see chefs relaxed and enjoying their process.
@@hopegold883 well its a competition. And this is a job lol. They dont just have all day to do this. People need to go home and take a break too
This is fabulous, but a NYT production should have captions, not auto-generated craptions. An organization this large has no excuse for dodging accessibility.
Hard agree.
Absolutely agreed!
Absolutely, especially with the masks and background noise
I was just thinking this watching the new one
seconded. am getting tired of asking on every single video and not getting anywhere. :/
Damn Seth!! I’m really impressed - he made a full model of what the house would be and base wth?? And the number of parts with labels - holy the complexity
architect gonna architect
Imagine if this was how he prepared his everyday dinners.
Studied architecture and had flashbacks to thesis. This made me anxious and happy all at the same time. Haha.
the camera shots are a little too tight imo, I can't tell whats going on I need more context
Especially with the finished projects.
I totally agree, the camera shots are too tight, it makes it hard to follow what is going on.
They might have been using longer lenses because covid. The one Sohla had looked like a 50

NYT: Gingerbread house competition
Sohla: Savory Breadstick house competition?
Gotta love her.
I love Sohla and Ham immediately both coming in with the classic Sohla "It's gonna be fine"
The two of them together bring the perfect energy everyone needs.
I love how in a room with three culinary professionals it's the home cook who's considered the man to beat.
So true! 😆
The FLAVORS Sohla and Ham brought!
Ingenious and inventive to say the least.
LITERALLY!!!!
I really wanted to taste it 😍
This would be an AMAZING and expensive ( bc of the labor etc) centerpiece for a NYE party or the like !
I never would have expected a seafood house to be as good as this one seems.
Okay sooo.... I'm gonna need an El-Waylly cooking show because Holay Wha, that is some chaotic calm I didn't know I needed.

omg Did Seth really drafted the gingerbread house in cad? Hilarious! I can't believe there's like a complete construction drawing for it and it's scaled too😭😭
im crying at the contrast between sohla/ham and priya/seth lmaoooooo "Do you have enough time to make more dough?" "Yeah.... I just don't really waaant to :/"
As an architecture student, i can recognize the PTSD face Seth made when it all ended.
I feel pretty bad for him, he obviously put in a lot of effort and the fact he couldn't finish it makes me sad.
As we said in architecture school "a project isn't done, it's just due"
the "well i guess it is what it is" face
i don’t typically make comments but i know that they add towards decision making for future videos: i hope they all can work like this again soon! their dynamics worked really well and i was smiling the whole time
Sohla and Ham prepared a feast AND still had time to walk the dogs and do camera work 😭💕
As an architecture student, I greatly appreciated the model created by Seth and Priya. The thing that got me was their use of the modeling program Rhino. I did the same thing for designing my gingerbread house this year and thought I was the only one who was crazy enough to 3D model the house before constructing it.
I think it's prolly at least crossed the minds of all architects/archi students who are making gingerbread houses. I used sketchup 😅
i'm sorry, but did the man bring out a dremel to construct his gingerbread house? next. level.
he seriously needs a show of his own where he recreates his favorite architectural works in food form

If they turned this video into a 10-part series, I bet so many people would watch it
I love that Priya calls Seth her "Partner" now and not just her roommate!
Why the hell did Seth never tell everyone that they are making a gingerbread replica of FALLING WATER BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
I mean damn. Bravo. I want to see the windows and the terrazzo though. Next weekend?
I usually hate when people say "It's too pretty, I can't eat it!", but they made a gingerbread Frank Lloyd Wright and a seafood feast, I would actually feel bad taking those apart
Sohla and Ham kick ass when they are in a kitchen, and seeing them work as a pair was truly inspiring
I could watch this ten times. Can’t wait to show my daughter! She’s eight and we loved all the BA stuff. Can’t support them anymore, and am so glad to show my daughter something we CAN support!
It’s especially nice for her to see great relationships working as teams in healthy ways! Her faves from BA were always Priya and Sohla, so this is perfect!
Priya and Seth are so type A and Sohla and Ham are so chill 😂😂😂 I love them

I really love having Seth and Ham actively involved in this video. Neither of them would have expected to be featured in a NYT video, but here we are
love everything about this, especially sohla's consistency in being the most chaotic and chill person in the kitchen
Oh please make these two couples a regular series! This is AMAZING 😍
I love how before even starting, sohla and ham decided this wouldn’t be a competition but just a way to complement Priya and Seth the best way they could haha
Thank you NYT for giving these amazing people a platform to be free and show off their collective creative genius.
LOVE that the El-Walilly's went for a savory house! Sweets get overwhelming during the holidays, but I would eat the hell out of that house. And the little mushroom garnishes and roe ornaments... PRECIOUS!
